Sarkast |

Feeling the familiar surge of energy, Sarkast looks somewhat surprised to realize it came from Nilus. "They don't look inclined to leave..."
With a thought, Sarkast vanishes from view.
Swift action and a mythic point for Vanishing Move (Greater Invisibility, CL8). Move action to move south and stand just past the door. Ready an action to attack if the blackfire starts casting a spell. If one tries to step past me, I will take my AoO to trip, but continue holding my readied action to disrupt a spell, using a thrown attack if necessary.
Dice rolls as needed (vs Flat Footed AC or CMD):
AoO Trip attack: 1d20 + 11 ⇒ (2) + 11 = 13
Readied attack on a caster: 1d20 + 16 ⇒ (5) + 16 = 21 damage: 1d4 + 7 ⇒ (4) + 7 = 11 Sneak attack: 5d6 ⇒ (3, 1, 5, 2, 6) = 17 -1 attack and damage if it is a thrown attack, as I would use the +1 returning dagger instead of Freedom's Kiss
If sneak attack hits, target is Slowed (unable to make attacks of opportunity) for 1 round. In addition, target is Disoriented (-2 attack, -6 vs Sarkast) and Hampered (1/2 speed and cannot take a 5' step) for 1 round.

Ayesha Jalal |

As Ayesha finished stuffing the papers in her pack, she heard the commotion from the next room. "No rest for the wicked, not even the extremely wicked" she mumbled as she moved swiftly to the door. Mentally reviewing her options, she looked to see the enemies all crowded together in one are. Never going to get a better chance at this. She cast her spell, and a glittering ball of bright light exploded in the midst of the foes.
Casting Glitterdust to hit them all. Will DC18 to avoid being blinded.

Dejik |

I forgot to mention: Dejik absorbs 5 hp of Nilus's damage from the exploding runes trap. That leaves her with 4 and Nilus with 5.
Iomedae, protect and aid us! And bring doom to those who challenge us!
Dejik grins at Ayesha. A burst of blinding light--that's not a bad idea, sister! She drops her bow and draws a magic rod, one that that Aravashiniel taught her to use to make her spells more powerful.
Casting Mythic Prayer: Allies get +2 luck bonus on attack rolls, weapon damage rolls, saves, and skill checks, and they heal 8 hp of damage. Enemies take -2 penalty on the same rolls, and they take 8 hp of damage. No saving throw for either effect.
Caster level check in case anyone has SR: 1d20 + 11 ⇒ (15) + 11 = 26
That should bring anybody who's still carrying any damage back to full hp. Dejik draws her intensify rod.

The group burst into action as Ayesha sends a glitterdust spell that manages to blind all four adepts pouring out of the north room. Nilus' haste spell speeds up the party, and Sarkast rushes to get into place to ambush a caster. Finally Dejik's prayer spell empowers the group whilst harming the adepts. Arueshalae sends a stream of arrows northwards, badly wounding one of the adepts.
The blinded adepts quickly start casting spells as two in the back start channeling two spells with a long cast, while the two in the front cast a spell that causes them to roar with anger. The southern adepts attempt the same. Sarkast tries a trip attack on one, but it fails.

As Dejik concentrates, the holy symbol around her neck begins to glow, and the rod in her left hand crackles with energy. Blue lightning streaks up her left arm and begins dancing around Iomedae's symbol. Dejik's jaw and eyes clench shut as she tries to build the power and hold it back simultaneously.
Her holy symbol glows brighter. The blue lightning dances faster. Her jaw clenches tighter.
Finally, Dejik's eyes flick open. In the same instant, the blue lightning disappears and the holy power bursts free from her holy symbol and flies down the corridor, engulfing the Black Fire Adepts in a brilliant white explosion.
Dejiks spends a full round casting intensified Burst of Radiance, targeting the 3 adepts in the doorway (plain, circle, square).

The remaining fires off a glitterdust in Ayesha's face, and manages to blind the magus! The remaining adepts cast mirror image spells on themselves. One manages to get off his summoning spell, and a hellhound bounds into existence! It rushes northwards, scorching Dejik and Arueshalae. With the magic protecting her from heat and cold, Dejik barely notices the hellhound's fire rolls over her. But through the magical link with her allies, Dejik does notice that Ayeshsha can't see.
She runs up behind Ayesha and touches the magus's shoulder. Borrow my eyes, sister, such as they are. Darkness clouds Dejik's vision once again, and she's surprised to realize she is still aware of the combatants on battlefield.
The hellhound's fire doesn't get past Dejik's fire resistance 5. Through the Status spell, Dejik is aware of Ayesha's condition. She moves up behind Ayesha and casts Accept Afliction. Ayesha's blindness transfers to Dejik.

Still invisible, Sarkast closes his eyes, listening and feeling, rather than just watching. He strikes out rapidly, two of his attacks striking the adept in front of him, who collapses to the ground, bleeding out.
In the north, Nilus strikes out, the sheer power of his blow blasting past any defenses of the remaining adept in the room, who dies badly. While Ayesha claws at her eyes, she suddenly calms, as Dejik takes the magus' affliction onto herself. Ayesha charges southwards for the hellhound, spiraling over Arueshalae before attacking the hellhound. Arueshalae then looses a single arrow, which instantly kills the hellhound.
The four remaining adepts realize they are being quickly, and badly overwhelmed. They start looking to each other, and then one after another, they begin to vanish, the two near Sarkast carefully avoiding potential attacks as they cast. Within a few seconds, they are all gone.
The adepts have cast dimension door spells.
End of Combat
Several rooms now lie open for exploration, their former occupants having fought you, and failed spectacularly.

Nilus Romani |

Nilus sighs heavily, killing demons was one thing...
Where my blade passes, beauty cannot flourish. he says in an almost defeated voice.

Sarkast |

Still invisible and nearly silent, Sarkast moves quickly around the rooms, looking for signs of traps or hidden compartments. Once he is visible again, he steps up to Nilus and says, "At least the last few had the good sense to realize they could not win. And perhaps, having seen good overcome evil, they may make a better decision in the future."
Take 10 for 40 perception (42 for "unusual stonework" due to the dwarven belt!) combing the rooms, then checking the doors. If Nilus starts to touch something, check it first to make sure it won't explode. ;-)
Also, I don't know how long we've been here in game time, but if it has been more than an hour, let me know so I can mark off another elixir.

Arueshalae the Risen |

Arueshalae walks over to Nilus as she lowers her bow, stepping over the bodies of the blackfire adepts.
"What do you mean by that?"
Meanwhile, Sarkast scours the area.
The northernmost room is a workshop.
A smokeless forge sits in the northwest corner of this room, next to an anvil. A weapon rack stands against the north wall, while two tables to the east and west, respectively, are covered with tools, alchemical supplies, magical reagents, books, and more. Several wooden chests sit under the western table, while to the north of the eastern table sits a second weapon rack; whereas the northernmost rack contains
several weapons that appear to be in fine condition, this more southern one contains weapons that appear to be damaged.
The forge here appears to be for crafting powerful weapons, a few of which are here. Sarkast finds the following:
- Masterwork tools for alchemy, weapons and armour, gemcutting, and jewelery
- 100 pounds of various rare and interesting magical supples, worth thousands of gold if anyone could move it
- a +2 unholy longsword
- two +1 glaives
- a broken assassin's dagger
- a broken +2 keen glaive
The southermost room appears to be the living quarters for the adepts and templars.
The northern third of this long room of this room contains a stove, a firepit, and a table. An open door leads to a well-stocked pantry. In the central part of the room sits a long wooden table surrounded by stools, while to the south stand three long bookcases and a pair of writing desks.
The room is surprisingly tidy, and the firepit and stove appear to be simple magical items providing heat without smoke. The provisions are high-quality dry goods, and everything is kept neat.
The bookshelves to the south constitute an extensive library devoted to Mendevian, Sarkorian, and Ustalavic history, along with a large amount oflore about the Abyss and several books on the nature and creation of planar portals.
Within the room are the following valuables:
- 5 bottles of fine Ustalavian wine
- 3 sealed jars of candied fruit from Katapesh
- a decanter of endless water, which appears to be the water source for the Sanctum
- a scroll of lesser planar binding
- a scroll of planar binding
- a scroll of plane shift
- scrolls of summon monster IV, V (x2), VI, and VII
You only have two directions left to explore in the sanctum. The buzzing to the south, or the silent room at the extreme north.

Nilus Romani |

Nilus looks at the demoness These men here. Who knows what the future held for them, could they have reformed and brought great beauty into the world? Perhaps. Now, we will never know. I took that chance away from them. I know in my head that such a thing would be...unlikely. But my heart grieves.

Dejik |

After several seconds, Dejik's "sight" returns. She moves over to Nilus and lays her hand on his shoulder.
Grief is one ailment that I have no remedy for, my friend, but these men made their choice. Our actions have consequences--we must all accept that in the end. She looks down at the remains of the adepts. Not long ago, I would have gladly been the instrument of divine retribution. My purpose was clear, and righteous fury guided my arrows home. And then I met you...
She gently wipes a smear of blood from the paladin's guantlet. You may not have been able to save these men, Nilus, but I believe you may have saved me.

Sarkast |

After a search of the area, Sarkast moves to the door to the south and tries to listen more carefully to the buzzing sound.
Does it sound like anything we've heard before, like those demons that drive you crazy with their buzzing sound? Is there anything audible besides the buzzing?

Nilus Romani |

Nilus smiles at Dejik Thank you.
The conflicted paladin stands and grabs Radiance.
I will feel better when the demons of this place are purged. Perhaps it can become a Temple to something beautiful one day?

Ayesha Jalal |

Ayesha also placed a hand on Nilus' shoulder. "I too have been saved by your deeds. I was a bitter woman, scorned by my family and tossed aside by my lover's family. With a scarred womb seen fit for nothing but death, I was bitter and filled with anger. The only recourse I saw to any difficulty was to kill and kill again. I am very, very good at it, apparently. But you, you see killing as a final resort and then hesitate not to make that action, and that is something I needed to experience. Thank you, my friend, for being who you are, so that I can see that who I am is not so terrible."
She stepped back and cleaned her blade before looking about, somewhat embarrassed. "Well, now that we have all bared our souls, what say we move on? Sarkast?"

GM SpiderBeard |

Arueshalae falls silent at Nilus' words. The bodies littered with arrows are strewn around the halls and she says nothing as Sarkast investigates the south door. Thinking about it, he's certain. There are derakni beyond the door - the locust-demons which cause confusion when they fly. At least two.

Nilus Romani |

Indeed. Nilus responds to Ayesha's final words after listening to her.
Going to assume that Sarkast alerts us to the fact that Derakni are in our future.
If the Droning of their wings causes you to forget...The Power of the Rose will compel you to remember.
Nilus has Clarifying Channel which allows a resave with a bonus vs Charms and Compulsions.

Sarkast |

"I am curious as to why they wait ... we have made enough noise I would have expected them to come out to attack us already."
He thinks for a moment, and asks, "Does anyone have anything we could use as ear-plugs to try to reduce the noise?"

Ayesha Jalal |

"I have few spells remaining, and little enough that would protect against the demons' buzzing. If we are to attack, best we make it as quick as possible. I will save some of my energies for dealing with the swarms they summon."

Nilus Romani |

Open the door. Kill. =)

Sarkast |

Dejik probably won't be able to post until this evening. She might have a spell to buff us with or to prepare to fire in as a surprise action. I'll check in with her and get her to post as early as she's able.

Dejik |

Dejik listens to the buzzing noise. I can silence the confusing drone for Sarkast and Nilus, but it will make it difficult to cast spells. Although, once Sarkast runs around behind them...
Dejik uses a mythic point to cast Slience at caster level 13, targeting Sarkast. She also draws her intensify metamagic rod.

GM SpiderBeard |

Everything becomes dead silent as you stand by the door. Quietly, you count down from three before Sarkast throws open the door. Althouhg the two derakni on the other side of the door were clearly ready for you to intrude and attack, they were caught off guard by the silence spell defeating their most trustworthy weapon. They are game for a fight, but the speed with which you charge in quickly overwhelms them, and you can all act!
However, of great note in the room is the fact it is absolutely crammed with insect swarms, in additino to the derakni.

Sarkast lunges in at the same derakni Nilus attacked, silently and invisibly stabbing his blade home. It reels as it is disoriented. Dejik then sends out two blasts of her divine mother's energy, scorching the two derakni. Arueshalae then sends a series of streaking arrows at the insect-demon, killing it and then redirecting her fire to the second. Both derakni go down under the power of the group's combined attacks before they can properly react.
However, the fight is not over. Two more derakni fly in through the wall, swooping over Nilus to float just out of melee range of the group. They focus on Nilus, and black energy rays streak for the paladin. The twin rays land solidly, and Nilus feels his very life essence being drained!

The derakni are flying above melee range. I know you have means to hit them but that may modify your number of attacks. Let me know, Sarkast.

Dejik |

Holding the magic rod in her hand, Dejik concentrates again. A brilliant flash bursts from her holy symbol and explodes behind the the demons, far enough back to avoid any injury to her friends.
Using the intensify rod to cast Burst of Radiance. DC 19 to avoid the blindness.
Caster level check vs SR: 1d20 + 11 ⇒ (2) + 11 = 13
Burst of Radiance damage: 10d4 ⇒ (2, 4, 1, 2, 4, 4, 4, 2, 2, 3) = 28
Blinded for: 1d4 ⇒ 1 rounds.

Crap, was reading in a hurry and missed that. OK, alternate plan: Spend a Mythic Point for Fleet Charge; run up the wall to get above the Derakni, rolling Acrobatics to avoid AoO.
Acrobatics vs Red CMD: 1d20 + 23 ⇒ (11) + 23 = 34
Acrobatics vs Yellow CMD+2: 1d20 + 23 ⇒ (15) + 23 = 38
From just above the Red derakni, make a Grapple check, provoking an AoO. AC vs the AoO is 29. If it hits, deduct the damage from this check (which will almost certainly make it fail)
Grapple vs Red CMD: 1d20 + 10 ⇒ (20) + 10 = 30
Woot! Nat 20 hits even if the AoO hits me!
Start of regular round, do not maintain the grapple. Sitting on top of the Derakni, apply the full attack from the original post with any penalties for the awkward position you want to apply. At the end of the attack, fall to the ground. With Rogue's Edge for Acrobatics, a DC 20 Acrobatics check treat an unintentional fall as 10' shorter, plus 10' for each 10 the DC is exceeded. For jumping, Sarkast's Acrobatics bonus is +65, so he can automatically ignore falls of 50' and land on his feet.
The fall will provoke another AoO from Red.

Ayesha Jalal |

Recognizing that her companions are fighting flying creatures within the room, Ayesha casts one of her last remaining spells and holds the charge in her off hand. Then, she took off at a sprint, dodging past Arushelae as she moved into the zone of silence and laid her hand on Nilus' shoulder, granting him the power of flight.
Cast fly and hold the charge. Move to Nilus and release the spell.

I go with multiple SR rolls for AoE spells unless there's a ton of enemies.
Dejik's SR: 1d20 + 11 ⇒ (5) + 11 = 16
Annd failed both.
Attack-Rapid-Deadly: 1d20 + 20 - 2 - 4 ⇒ (16) + 20 - 2 - 4 = 30 Damage: 2d8 + 40 ⇒ (6, 2) + 40 = 48

Enervation: 1d20 + 16 ⇒ (18) + 16 = 34 Levels: 1d4 ⇒ 4
Enervation: 1d20 + 16 ⇒ (4) + 16 = 20 Levels: 1d4 ⇒ 3
Dejik's burst of radiance does nothing as the derakni resist it. However, Sarkast shows off a nifty trick as he ladders up the wall, performs a beautiful backflip, and then lands right on the back of a buzzing derakni! He delivers several brutal stabs before leaping off to land neatly on the ground. Ayesha then rushes into the room, releasing a fly spell on Nilus, granting the weakend paladin flight!
Arueshalae, calm and focused, unleashes another deadly barrage of arrows which slam into the derakni Sarkast attacked. It buzzes around in a strange, lazy circle. Almost... almost dead. The derakni focus once more
on the noble paladin, and twin rays of black energy fly down at him!
Nilus' eyes go wide as the black rays of energy slam into him, siphoning his essence. His limbs fly wide and his scream of pure agony echoes through the halls. When the rays end, so does Nilus. He pitches over onto the floor. The radiant beauty is gone, and what lies there is a pallid body with sickly grey skin.

Just a quick check in: Dejik is catching up at work after our long weekend, but her intent is to do another AoE, probably a channel, which might drop the first one. I'm going to focus on the second on that assumption.
As Nilus falls, Sarkast lets out a scream, soundless in the magical silence. He sees Dejik raising her holy symbol in a familiar gesture, and quickly assesses the two demons. His pupils contract, and he feels a righteous fury rise in him. Summoning the last reserves of his goddess-given energy, he runs up the other wall, trying to take down the second one.
Let's see if I can get lucky again: Free action to enter controlled Bloodrage. Swift to spend my last mythic point for a fleet charge, attacking Yellow on the way up. This attack gains a mythic +4 to hit, ignores non-mythic DR, and gains sneak attack from Skirmisher.
Fleet Charge Attack, Freedom's Kiss: 1d20 + 21 ⇒ (20) + 21 = 41 Damage, ignores DR: 1d4 + 9 ⇒ (3) + 9 = 12 Sneak Attack: 5d6 ⇒ (6, 1, 3, 6, 4) = 20 Angelic Attacks: 1d6 ⇒ 3
Confirm crit?: 1d20 + 21 ⇒ (20) + 21 = 41 Damage, ignores DR: 1d4 + 9 ⇒ (2) + 9 = 11
As he runs up the wall, he plunges Freedom's Kiss deep into the demon's body. Even though the room is silent, he can hear the awakened weapon's shout of pleasure at being used for its true purpose. From the top of the wall, the kellid turns and looks the demon in the eyes. He runs back down, stabbing again as he goes past.
Yellow is now Slowed (unable to make attacks of opportunity) for 1 round. In addition, it is Bewildered (-2 AC, -6 vs Sarkast) and Disoriented (-2 attack, -6 vs Sarkast) for 1 round.
Forgot to roll against AoO's for moving up, but I don't want to mess up the rolls above, so here they are now:
Acrobatics vs Red CMD: 1d20 + 25 ⇒ (15) + 25 = 40
Acrobatics vs Yellow CMD+2: 1d20 + 25 ⇒ (4) + 25 = 29
AC 37 vs AoO
Now Yellow can't take any further AoOs, so I don't have to worry on the way down. ;-)
Attack, Freedom's Kiss: 1d20 + 17 ⇒ (6) + 17 = 23 Damage, good, magic: 1d4 + 7 ⇒ (2) + 7 = 9 Sneak Attack: 5d6 ⇒ (3, 5, 1, 2, 3) = 14 Angelic Attacks: 1d6 ⇒ 6
If this attack hits against his reduced AC, the effects of debilitating injury are extended another round.
