Titus curles a lip in disgust at the idea, but finally nods. Certainly, Pakuzzo should do the talking. Perhaps we'll find common ground with these...people...given their dislike of our own enemy.

With a shrug, the countess smiles. "Seems as good a plan as any." Draining the last of her drink, she locks the front door and ushers you towards the dartboard. Swinging it to the side, she pulls a hidden lever behind it. A section of the wall suddenly slides open, displaying the alleyway out back. "Out you go." she commands.

Once outside, the door slides shut again...seemless within the wall.

Making your way back through town is a fairly simple, though your group gets a few strange looks. As the commoners head towards the shops and businesses for work....you make your way back towards Breakbridge. The Countess tosses the required coinage at the uniformed regular, grumbling "Once was a time we could walk about town without bribing the locals at every corner." before smiling sweetly at the man and offering a curtsy. "Keep doin the gud Thrunes work sir!"

Once across you easily find your destination....though from the outside it seems the recent times have not been kind to it. The once pristine wooden sign hangs at an angle...cobwebs in the corner of the doorway... Pushing through the entrance, you see a large, arena-style shop with a few shelves....though mostly bare at this time. A tengu man stands near the counter, his back to you. Glancing to the right, you see the requisite gaudy painting of the Queen Thrune of Cheliax...

A gruff voice calls out "I've not done anything wrong and long live Thrune. Now get out of my shop. I've no desire to mess with His Dottari today."

Philacris raises an eyebrow and gives the rest of the party a sidelong glance before mouthing "Pleasant sounding fellow!"

"A-hem!" Phila audibly clears her throat. "You get a lot of Dottari visitors around here, sir?"
Though she starts speaking, the moment Pakuzzo starts speaking she lets him take the lead on negotiations.

Pakuzzo steps inside and gives the interior an approving look-around.

"Oh come now, Phil. A fine upstanding proprietor of goods and services like this gentleman here, having trouble with the law? Why, the very idea is silly. The honest merchant is the backbone of any successful city's economy. We may as well do as he says and look for another place to do business."

As he says this, he nonchalantly produces a bag of gold and absentmindedly but methodically begins tossing them lightly up and down with one hand, letting the sound of the coins jingle audibly throughout the shop.

"After all, regardless of how much we've brought, our money's not exactly clean, now, is it...?"

"Doesn't everyone get visited by the damn Dottori these days?" growls the man, turning around. "I mean..."

Stopping suddenly, he takes in your group. The Countess smiles and waves, as Pakuzzo begins to make his way around the shelves.

"Yes, I agree. Though I'm not much of a backbone these days...since adventurers aren't exactly frequenting this town as of late, my sales aren't what they used to be....you aren't wearing the Dottari markings...." Trailing off as he eyes the coin pouch, he smiles. "Who are you and....you know what, not sure it's important who..." his voice trailing off a second time as his eyes settle on Titus.

The man cautiously makes his way towards a far wall of the room and opens a cabinet. Retrieving an item from a hidden drawer within, he turns back towards you. "Perhaps, you could give me a reason to stay in business." he says with a smile.

Holding up a pristine morningstar with a rose carved into the side, he adds "You are welcome to inspect it if you wish, but dun be making me chase you out of here."

Pakistan whistles appreciatively as as the other tengu sets the weapon before Titus.

"That is pretty. I knew this place must have fine wares the moment I clapped eyes on it.

"Now, we'd be quite happy to tell you who we represent, but I get the feeling that maybe a little discretion would benefit the both of us. I can definitely say that we're most emphatically not with the the Dottari. Perhaps some better questions might be what we can do for each other, or what you have for sale, and how lucrative might we make the use of your time, Mister--?"

Pakuzzo lets the last word hang in the air, inviting the shopkeeper to provide his name.

Titus looks appreciatively at the weapon, even before he realizes how it's marked. He keeps his gaze stern as he examines the weapon, looking up for permission before testing it's weight. This may be near to a sign...or perhaps that's just naivete. Either way, this weapon would help our cause tremendously.

In spite of knowing that Pakuzzo was to steer this conversation, he can't help but ask simply. How much?

Titus: As you touch the weapon, it glows briefly red and white...and begins to give off a magical aura to those casting Detect Magic

"I have other items for those beginning their quests, though less special in nature." he replies. Pausing a moment, he raises a finger, "Though...there is something..." rummaging through a drawer at his desk, he produces a parchment with some arcane sigils.

Read Magic or Detect Magic and Spellcraft DC 17:

"I do have connections in town...I may be able to procure other items of value with the proper incentive." he adds before turning towards Pakuzzo. "To be fair...I'd already decided you were not with the Dottari. Since ya aint arrestin me...I'm guessing you aren't with Thrune at all."

"Call me Sharpbeak for discretion. If you are feel we shouldn't speak openly, call me Hooks. Hows that sound? As for the cost...my standard pricing would make that 400 platinum."
(4k gold)

"Now...how lucrative are we talking? And what goals hold your desires? We clear that up and perhaps we can become better acquainted. I take care of my friends."

"Then Hooks should do for now, friend," Pakuzzo says smoothly, keeping a pleasant facade despite the fact that the price that was just quoted to Titus made him want to flinch involuntarily.

"And how lucrative, you ask? Well, I find it somewhat gauche to put a specific number on our accumulated funds, but I can say that our business often brings us into wealth very often, and we're more than willing to spread our windfalls around to people who can provide us with discreet goods and services. Furthermore, we happen to be working with people, who, should we succeed in our endeavors, will be very grateful to us and have access to the kind of fortunes that make what we currently are willing to part with look like a pittance. And we don't forget our friends either.

Bluff: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (13) + 8 = 21

"Specifically, right now we're looking for someone who can move a small number of people out of the city without alerting the authorities, and then back in again under the same circumstances with friends in tow. I can promise that a friend who can accomplish that would be well compensated, possibly with further business to follow."

I'm spinning half-truths here. Can we come up with an actual price to quote him for this? If he agrees to do this eventually we're going to have to pay up, probably up front, too.

Philacris quickly casts Read Magic and inspects the scroll. "Ah now. This may be useful. How much for this scroll Sharpbeak? Surely no more than 25 gold? It has the look of a... paladin's crude script to it. And we all know how that changes the prices of things" She smiles a small, mischievous smile. Bargaining for ingredients is something she's done for years, probably longer than this Sharpbeak fellow has been alive.

Step one of negotiating is to force the other party to name the first price. This is like Real Life 101. :>

At hearing Pakuzzo bring up vague promises of wealth, Phila adds "Of course, don't be mistaken. We're not planning on paying for this kind of service with promises and 'appreciation' alone. On the other hand, if your offer isn't competitive, you can be sure we won't be sticking around long. There are other ways to accomplish what we need done." She speaks vaguely, letting him come to his own conclusions.

Titus, never one to be able to conceal anything, seems a bit crestfallen, and grimly shakes his head. Unknowingly perhaps helping any negotiations process, he simply states. Too bad, a fine weapon. Thank you, but I cannot afford that. He then stands to listen to the conversation, considering his own business to be done.

@Philacris: Ah, but you assume that in real life I have the financial sense that God gave gravel. :p By all means, have Phil give it a shot.

Pakuzzo keeps his easygoing expression steady as Philacris amends the offer to Sharpbeak. He was somewhat annoyed that the elf had seized the reigns of the negotiations, but he kept his trap shut and maintained a unified front. The end result was what was important.

|Kintargo Area Map | Combat Slides |

"I may know someone able to assist in such desires. The cost though depends on the who, the where, and the why." he replies with a smirk. His piercing blue eyes lighting up at the thought.

Chuckling, he turns to Philacris. "My dear, you do know your scrolls. Normally, I'd say 200 rounds an be firm...but I like you. Twenty-five will be fine."

"Like I said, there are variables one must know before one can have a proper negotiation. Would I not be violating those I know if I sent Thrune himself to be smuggled to asylum for a pittance? No, things must be shared before I can suggest a proper figure. The where could be vague, but distance would be important. The who....well, I suppose we could overlook such things, though the right answer could cause a discount. The why though....that's the rub. One must have a reason to engage is such a lucrative investment."

The countess crosses her arms and leans back against a shelf. Smiling from ear to ear as the group and tengu bicker back and forth. 'It's nice to see commerce still lives....even under Thrune's rule' she considers.

Phila readily passes over 25 gold for the scroll of Lesser Restoration, keeping a close eye on it to make sure its not swapped out for something of lesser value mid-transaction. Once its in her hands, she rolls it up and places it carefully in a scroll case. "A pleasure. Now, about the safe passage..."

She looks over at Pakuzzo, Sendi and Crady, unsure how much they want to divulge. While they consider what they might want to say, she watches Sharpbeak, trying to suss out where his allegiences lie from how he reacts when Thrune is brought up.

Saint Senex was an oracle of water who lived a few hundred years ago and who dedicated much of her time to returning the bodies of drowned sailors to their families. Seafaring mystics still venerate her, with a few manning a small shrine on the western coast of Argo Isle near the city of Kintargo.

Titus furrows his brow, grumbling. He looks to the others direction, not at all happy about having to rid himself of the means to defend himself.

Oh, how you've become jaded, Titus...where has your faith gone?

"Oh, of course!" Philacris fishes through her pack for her meager weapons and sets them aside, following the two of them to the ragged tent. "You don't use the lighthouse itself to sleep? Hmm."

She listens through the story, though knowing the details already, she spends the time mulling over the behavior of the two monks. On one hand, they simply seemed wary of outsiders, while on the other hand, something about the way they spoke felt a little off to her.

Sense Motive, are these two really followers of the Saint and do they have hidden intentions: 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (2) + 1 = 3

Though she quickly gets caught up in their tales instead! "Ah, an oracle! Do the two of you also wield similar divine magic stemming from the wind and the waves? I've read rather extensively, but never seen the differences in person." Philacris starts drilling them for details on their experiences.

Do we want to broach our questions about the Hellknight guy now, or wait until we're more trusted first?

Pakuzzo begins removing his shortbow, quiver, and scimitar, while trying to get a read on the priests--at least, he was was assuming they were priests.

"I'm a worshiper myself," Pakuzzo says conversationally, leaving out that Gozreh was among one of a half-dozen deities he payed occasional reverence to. "Can't say I'm too familiar with Saint Senex, though, curse my ignorance."

Let's wait until we get the results of our Sense Motive checks before we ask about Octavio.

While the male continues to keep a close eye on you, the female oracle gracefully accepts your weapons. "Thank you." she smiles.

Placing the gear in a chest, she shuts the lid, but doesn't lock it.

Philacris:

You don't sense any deception and believe they truly are who they say they are

Pakuzzo:

You believe they are who they claim to be. However, they do seem to be hiding something.

"Yes, we do receive blessings from the Saint. As for the humble dwellings, it depends on the situation." begins the woman.

Quickly interrupting her, the male continues "As for the current night, we will be sleeping out here. It's a nice, tranquil night and you can watch the waves for miles. Why would we wish to hide from such beauty?"

Pakuzzo is a city boy, and doesn't relish sleeping outdoors, but tries to be magnanimous so as not to burn any bridges just yet.

"Good point. By the by, either of you ever hear of a gent named Octavio Sabinus? We're sort of looking to get in touch."

When the opportunity eventually presents itself to speak to another party member without being noticed, Pakuzzo whispers something out of the corner of his mouth:

Stealth: 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (15) + 9 = 24

Whisper:
"They're hiding something. Ain't sure what. Stay on your toes. Pass it on."

”Indeed. Have you heard of him?”

Philacris royally failed her sense motive, so...

"Why? Well, some of us like not getting wet if it rains. And I hear there are wolves and things out here." She eyes the forest around the group as if some wolves will pop out on cue. When Pakuzzo voices the question that the group came here to ask, her attention snaps back to the two oracles.

"It's rather important we speak to him."

Perception? Vs Pakuzzo: 1d20 + 10 ⇒ (9) + 10 = 19

Turning back to the group as she retrieves a cup of tea, the female gasps at Pakuzzo's questions. Coughing a few times she quickly regains her composure. "Do what? I mean we..."

"I'm sorry, who did you say?" interjects the male, eyeing her with eyes like daggers.

The countess speaks up finally, having observed how you handled yourselves with such grace, one may have forgotten she was there. "Yeah! My cousin. He's from The Order, you know? They've helped and been helped by your sect before. I just figured he might...you know....be hiding out here. Have you seen him?"

Raising an eyebrow, the male oracles pauses a long moment. Turning to Philacris, he smiles again. "You've no need to worry about the wolves here. They rarely come this close to the lighthouse."

"Jenbai" speaks the woman "Look at her cheeks. There's an obvious resemblance...surely she's family..."

"Hush Remele." he growls back. "That doesn't make a difference."

Philacris, both oracles involuntarily glanced towards the building at the mention of Octavius and the order
To get more from them you'll need either diplomacy (with +20 to the roll due to the countess being with you) or intimidate. Alternatively, you guys could just kill them. :-P

Phila looks the two oracles in the eyes and just says "You know something about Octavio? Please, you're the only ones who can aid us in this. Ms. Sabinus has been quite distraught."

Diplomacy: 1d20 + 6 + 20 ⇒ (1) + 6 + 20 = 27

"And honestly, hiding her cousin from her is exceedingly rude. You should be ashamed of yourselves." Lol, how do you RP a nat 1 that still results in a 27?

Pakuzzo crosses his arms and regards the pair.

"Look, we can all stand around playing silly buggers and pretend you really don't know who we're talking about, but I'm not going to insult your intelligence. The Countess here really is Octavio's cousin, and we're here to help him. There's some bad stuff going on in the city, and we think he can aid us to make things right. Asking for your trust so quickly may be presumptuous, but the sooner we can get in contact with him, the better. If you know something that can possibly help us, we would be more than grateful for the assistance."
