Roll20 Link- Age of Worms

Pillette shatters a vial of holy water against the front skeleton, injuring it mightily, and lending collateral damage to the rear skeleton. Raella almost cracks the stone wall with her huge swing, the skeleton offering very little resistance after its exposure to holy water. Solrisa moves up, trying to finish the last skeleton, and fails. A flaming Mortimer bowls it over, knocking it prone, while he ends up face-to-face with the new recruits, still afire. Ascaria diverts Mortimer's pain, healing his own, fresh injuries with the Asmodean wand of healing. Tynan tries to finish the skeleton lying at his feet, but his blade is not enough to end it.

Before the skeleton gets laid out, he swings on Mortimer in a moment of opportunity.

Mace: 1d20 ⇒ 7 for 1d6 ⇒ 5

The prone skeleton stands up provoking, then tries to lay into the new arrival, Tynan.

Mace: 1d20 ⇒ 2 for 1d6 ⇒ 6 damage

The new recruits overflowing from the other room begin their assault. The longspearman standing next to Mortimer at the end of the hallway lashes out at Solrisa, seeking to penetrate her armor.

Longspear, S: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (13) + 3 = 16 for 1d8 ⇒ 1 damage

The recruit through the doorway steps back, only after the tiefling commander barks an order to make way. "On my command... thrust home!!"The three longspearmen at the ready fling their points at the giant, hoping a concerted effort brings him down.

Longspear, M: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (16) + 3 = 19 for 1d8 ⇒ 8 damage

Longspear, M: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (15) + 3 = 18 for 1d8 ⇒ 2 damage

Longspear, M: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (16) + 3 = 19 for 1d8 ⇒ 6 damage

"Praise Asmodeus!! You'll vanquish the heathens soon enough!!"

Mortimer:

The other two recruits have pulled back, but look ready to strike at anyone advancing through the doorway.

Ascaria can see no enemies, just the tips of their spears through his personal fog, but he gets nervous as Sol rushes in to confront the hoard. He sees the spears tip and dance, but sees no blooding on Sol this round. I should have her on the ‘link if she’s going to act like that.

Perception: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (18) + 6 = 24

The halfling shudders upon hearing the musings of the mixed-breeds. That would not be a pleasant way to survive, I'm sure.

"তিনি প্রাণে বেঁচে যান, দৃক ব্যর্থতার জন্য তোমাকে শাস্তি, বা পরের বিশ্বের আর্চ প্রভু হবে হবে."

Infernal:
"If he survives, Thedrick will punish you for failure, or the Arch Lord will in the next world."

Roll20 Link- Age of Worms

Pillette takes advantage of the distance, striking a recruit soundly through the doorway. Raella reduces their ranks by one, with one blow. Solrisa presses through the frontline, fortifying herself against the inevitable flurry of thrusts. Tynan finishes the skeleton, then adds insult to injury as his dagger finds the same thrall recently struck by Pillette's bolt. Mortimer tucks himself into a corner, following Solrisa's lead, and manages to strike the unlucky spearman next to him. Ascaria pays for pain, healing himself while praising the Lord.

The tieflings bark orders, and the recruits obey to the letter. "You three, finish what you started with the one in the corner. You two, grab the wench."

Longspear, M: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (15) + 3 = 18 for 1d8 ⇒ 5 damage

The only successful longspearman howls, as his spear stabs into the giant's side, letting the blood out. "I struck!! Look at him bleed!!"

The other two let go of their spears, and reach out to the maiden.

Grapple, S: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (19) + 3 = 22 Solrisa and her new acquaintance are now grappled. The clenched fist on both Solrisa and recruit are marked on the map.

Solrisa shirks off the dead recruit's embrace, and lays into tiefling, ending its life. Ascaria chirps another praise, and healing continues to uphold the giant in the adjacent room. Tynan gracefully slips through the doorway, just past the tiefling with an axe, but falls short of nicking him with his shortsword.

Watching his comrade fall, the remaining tiefling bellows in frustration. "Down her now, or I'll kill you myself!!" The recruits take a moment to decide who, in fact, they will stab with their longspears. Only after they've struck out is it clear that they still cower to the tiefling's command.

"Have you all chosen to repent? Give up the Lord of Contracts for a new god? Which goddess would you like to profess your new faith?" Sol asks, honestly and eagerly happy for the wise decision they are all making.

Ascaria looks in shock as Solaria slaughters the goon that grappled her.

If one is innocent, aren't they all? So bloodthirsty. So 'mercy' from Sol is death.

He lets it go, though he does Stabilize the remaining goon before he bleeds out.

During that time, he also takes Mort's damage onto himself* one more time before ending the link if only briefly (swift).

* Mort heals 5hp of damage thanks to Ascaria.

Presuming we're leaving rounds...
Ascaria plies the wand, first on Mort, then on Sol, then on himself, to try and heal the party back to health - or what passes for it.

Mort CLW: 1d8 + 1 ⇒ (2) + 1 = 3
Sol CLW: 1d8 + 1 ⇒ (8) + 1 = 9
Ascaria CLW: 1d8 + 1 ⇒ (1) + 1 = 2

Seeing Mort still needs more, he applies another charge to his large frame.
Mort CLW: 1d8 + 1 ⇒ (2) + 1 = 3 sigh

...and another.
Mort CLW: 1d8 + 1 ⇒ (7) + 1 = 8

"There that should do it."

He waits to see how the hapless cultists respond to Sol before jumping in the conversation.

GM Rat Sass:
Once Mort is healed, I relink him. I also drop Tynan to link Sol. So my list is:
Life Link (3) = Mort, Rae, Sol

3 people marked this as a favorite.
Male Human Brawler (17), Rogue (0)

Mortimer faces the terrified recruits, maintaining a fierce fighting stance pending their responses.

Intimidate: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (8) + 3 = 11

Unfortunately, the very attentive gnome dancing around him with a wand makes him look more like a candidate for the ballet than the brawler he's become.

He glances around looking for a miniature model of Stonehenge.

F Halfling Servant 3

Pillette will move forward cautiously, rearming her crossbow, and peering around the room for additional danger.

She looks down at the pierced Tiefling. If you follow the Lord of Contracts, you had better been able to fulfill your end of the bargain, or things won't turn out so well for you.

"They have a boss around here somewhere. They called him Thedrick."

The three recruits look at each other, nodding to one of their ranks to engage the maiden directly. "New God, oh my, yes! The Lord of Contracts is but a cog in the wheel. The Ebon Triad follows a higher path."

The Ebon Triad is an evil cult dedicated to merging the gods Asmodeus, Lamashtu, and Urgathoa into a mighty Overgod.

Knowledge(Religion) Check, DC 20:

Adherents to the doctrine of the Ebon Triad clutch close their secrets even from other worshipers of Asmodeus, Lamashtu, and Urgathoa, who consider them heretics. In fact, word of the heresy has not spread far from these three churches, who keep accounts of Ebon Triad activities brutally suppressed lest the cult gain more converts. Read DC 15 Spoiler as well.

Knowledge(Religion) Check, DC 25:

Despite the internecine struggle between the Ebon Triad and the orthodox churches, clerics of Asmodeus, Lamashtu, and Urgathoa in thrall to the cult continue to receive spells from their godly patrons. This fact especially galls the church of Asmodeus, whose rigid faith cannot square the contradiction. Read DC 15 and DC 20 spoilers as well.

The idea that a mortal cult could bind gods as powerful as Asmodeus, Lamashtu, and Urgathoa is extremely doubtful, even preposterous. Read DC 15, DC 20, and DC 25 spoilers as well.

Knowledge(Religion) Check, DC 35:

The Ebon Triad hopes to bring about the Age of Worms as a precursor to the creation of its terrible god, and has its hands in apocalyptic conspiracies across the land. The cultists move to the corner, taking comfort in each other's presence. The two who haven't spoken hold hands, while the speaker remains in front, hands clasped.

The same recruit turns to address the slip. "Father Thedrick. He should be waiting for you now. He would welcome your might, if you swore an oath to serve him. There is much work yet to be done."

Sol's cheer smile bends to a frown.

"You mean you would want to continue to worship Evil? What's more, you think others should as well?" Sol asks, really not wanting to believe these men could be so evil. "Are you sure you do not wish to find redemption in a goddess less...evil?"

Sol readies her sword.

Male, Gnome

"Yeah, I don't think you understand our purpose here. This cult is a drain on the town and we're here to take it out and disperse the members by force." he gestures to the tieflings, "Killing if necessary."

"So tell me, convince me, why is your cult good for the town? What work is yet to be done? You should speak as if your lives depended on your answers, because they do." he says quietly, looking ever so hesitantly at Sol before looking back to the poor warriors.

Roll20 Link- Age of Worms

The cultist looks back and forth between the golden girl and golden gnome, and furrows his brow. "What is more important than taking something's strength to make a greater power, a power that will restore order to the world in ways previously unimagined? A God above gods, the Overgod, who will end conflict across the world, and reshape it as He sees fit. Such a glorious day awaits us all." The gaunt man turns to Ascaria.

"The town here is unaware of our presence, surely. We bring in our own supplies from outside of Diamond Lake for that very purpose. A few select citizens of Diamond Lake have even joined us. There's no need for further bloodshed here. We can usher in the new Age together. What do you say?" The man looks hopefully for a sign of acceptance in your faces.

Male, Gnome

Ascaria sighs, "Your blather is unconvincing. Some say Asmodeus is the Overgod. You'd supplant him for another? Frankly I just don't see it. Do you even have a name for that which your worship so fervently you're willing to lay down your lives in his service?"

Roll20 Link- Age of Worms

The man's expression loses all sign of hope, as resignation closes his eyes. "You ask empty questions, for your mind is already closed. You are here to murder, not scatter. We will look down upon you from His eyes, for our blood will mix with Hers, and we will be one with His power. Your blood will mix with ours, I can promise you that. It already has." The man opens his eyes, and looks directly at Mortimer and Solrisa.

"We are ready when you are."

Male Human Brawler (17), Rogue (0)

Mortimer stands unflinching.

"Overgod? I make it a point to never get involved with megalomaniacs. Things always end poorly for those who do. Pick your weapons up, then."

He maintains his fighting stance, waiting for them to pick their spears back up.

Sol brightens, her mind made up.

"You have been offered the chance of repentance and redemption, and you are unbowed. I offer you to the Dragon who stands against evil," Sol says cheerily couping the head from the first cultist. "By the Dragon and for the Dragon, I give you his mercy."

Coup d' Cultist: 2d10 + 6 ⇒ (9, 1) + 6 = 16 damage.

Mortimer wrote:

The rear cultists look down, one watching the body fall, the other watching the head roll. They both look up, taking in Solrisa and her bloody blade, then Mort.

"We will not take up arms. Murder us like you did Tostig. We only sought to defend ourselves, and that appears futile now. Our God is a merciful God. We see your 'mercy' here, and shall carry it with us into death, and beyond."

The two men stand, ready.

Male Human Brawler (17), Rogue (0)

Somewhat bewildered, Mortimer promptly drops his stance as he watches Solrisa behead the first Cultist.

...but they are not hurting in a conventional sense...
This doesn't feel right.
Oh Gods, it's not so smooth -- a hack job! Surely that could have been done better!

Were it not for the total lack of any substance in his stomach, its contents would add color to the Cultist's blood on the floor as Mort begins to dry heave.

Recovering his most of his composure, he addresses the Sisters.

"What is it with you people and your beheadings? No! Sorry -- whatever that is -- I don't think I have it in me. We can't keep on doing this to cultists -- it's a waste of time and energy. Can we just focus on the source of this evil? If we can get rid of the true source of evil, its hold on the cultists might just fade away. If not, we can deal with them afterwards -- however you think best."

Sol smiles cheerily after ending a bit of evil upon Golarion. She smiles at Mort, happy to help him understand.

1d20 + 7 ⇒ (12) + 7 = 19 Know (Religion)

"Oh Mort! This is kind of fun and what the Dragon would want...their evil should not be allowed to spread," Sol explains helpfully. "The nice man in the jail had it right: there is deep and abiding evil here, unrepentant evil, the kind of evil that must not be allowed to fester lest is unleash a deeper evil than that of even Dahak."

Sol explains, readying her sword for the next couping.

"You see, you saw the symbols outside this corridor? When we first alighted from the elevator? There were three symbols. Three *unholy* symbols. Three symbols of gods that should not be," Sol continues to explain.

"They were from Asmodeus, Lamashtu, and Urgathoa. Three gods who should be separate and apart...yet these..." Sol says, lining up her next sword to the next neck. "Even those churches would consider them heretics...these three cults form what is known as the 'Ebon Triad'. They surely aim to do things so unholy that no being of good, nor any that follow the Dragon, can allow them to continue."

2d10 + 6 ⇒ (2, 7) + 6 = 15 Coup d'cultist

Sol smiles as the next evil head rolls away.

"That these were thrice unrepentant, that these would choose to try to recruit us, that they show no remorse, shows their commitment to evil and that what should not be. I choose, as a gift from Dragon, to offer them quick mercy. And for that, we should be joyous."

Rae raises her sword, only to frown and lower it again as first the evil cultist and then her sister, her dear, beautiful, completely dimwitted sister speak.

"Stop it, Ris! Can't you see that's what they *WANT* us to do? that by cutting them down somehow they think it will benefit this evil over god they worship????? Can't you see?" Gods of Scale and Thread! Must she be so *MUCH* like mother?!?!?!

F Halfling Servant 3

Pillette steps back, giving the sunny dragon Lady plenty of space to exact her justice. At least she's a leader who know what she wants.

The halfling quietly offers an opinion to Mort. "The Imperial Inquisition of Asmodeus would certainly consider this triad to be a danger to the good health of the people. Those unholy ones would support abominations of the worst kind." Even worse than the couplings that result in Tieflings.

Rae looks from Sol to Pillette and back again.

"Why don't we knock them out for now, and then if they're still feeling feisty when we get back, we can take care of them then?" A thousand thousands threads has the weave...how much damage will the loss of these filthy threads do?

Roll20 Link- Age of Worms

The final cultist in the room looks down on the floor, sees the blood gouting from the necks of his brethren, then slows to a trickle, like overturned cups of wine.

He turns to you all, and listens. He waits, words failing to fully form in his soon-to-be-opened throat. "You ignorant girl..."

He is looking directly at Pillette.

Mortimer looks at Sol as she speaks, preparing to behead the next Cultist. Seriously. To be able to possess the Will to do that.... He dry heaves again.

'less evil'?! 'Fun'?! Dragon? It is different than 'beings of good?' What Dragon? Like Aesur -- It's not her fault! She's haunted and hunted too?!!

Exactly!

Overcoming his nausea, Mort's eyes follow the Cultist's gaze towards Pillette. Not knowing squat about Religion, he counters:

"He's wrong to say that Pillette, but -- sorry, I can't keep settling for the `lesser of two' -- or any number of -- 'evils'. Besides -- I can't help but notice -- at least among this lot -- it's not even a triad anymore."

Mortimer facing Solrisa, places himself squarely between her and the remaining Cultist in the room.

"Sol -- I agree with Raella on this -- don't you see?! Think! You might making this Evil even stronger with your actions. You are likely being used. Please! This is too easy! You have got to try to let this go!" He looks around a little nervously. "Let me answer to -- this Dragon of yours!"

He looks to Rae, hoping for additional support.

Male, Gnome

Ascaria watches the bloodshed and listens to the conversation. So confusing! Religion certainly is full of complex rules.

He says practically, "Look, let's tie this guy up and prop him up here while we delve deeper and see what's what. Maybe we can talk some sense into him then, maybe not. But it won't hurt us to try - right?"

"Anyone have any rope?" He looks to the gear of the fallen cultists, looking for something to bind the remaining fool, but also for anything useful to the party. He'll cast Detect Magic out of habit, though he does not expect to find anything on these lesser men.

"We're going to save you from yourself. Someday you'll thank us." he says to the cultist as he searches the bodies of his dead comrades.

F Half Elf:

Sol stops her cheery granting of mercy to listen to Mort and Rae.

"Oh, if you want, Sister." Sol replies, lowering her sword. "Although there is nothing in what I said that would lead anyone to the conclusion that killing them would aid those goals, if you and Mort want to tend to this last one, I will leave him in your hands."

Sol pauses to clean her blade on one of the cultist's garments before re-sheathing it.

"If you need me to grant them a merciful end rather than allow them to fester in their turpitudes, just let me know," Sol cheers to her sister, happy to help the confused woman with her burden.

"It might be that others or more exploration will explain better the blasphemes that they attempt," Sol says. "I am not even sure how or why Asmodeus' spark still festers in these because what these cults try to do is an affront even to the Lord of Contracts. Maybe we should ask Father Thedrick before we grant him mercy."

Sol waits patiently for Ascaria to finish his examinations and whatever Mort and Rae do with the last unrepentant, evil cretin.

Male Human Slayer 11

While the others debate the fate of the final cultist, Tynan moves to check the smaller chamber on the south end of the room. He scans the area carefully, looking for anything of value, either monetarily or informational.

"You're right, Solrisa. It isn't in anything you said -- it just feels fishy. Just because something is easy to do doesn't necessarily mean that it's a good thing to actually do -- and this is one of those things. It just doesn't feel right."

Grabbing a tunic from one of the fallen cultists, Mortimer escorts the remaining cultist back to the room with unconscious Tiefling. He tears the tunic into strips and instructs the cultist to sit on the floor. He then uses the strips to bind the cultist's hands and feet.

Trait: ~Improvisational Equipment~

"Tell him the Duel is still on," he says, pointing to the Tiefling. "I'll be looking for him. Feel free to tell him to come find me -- I'll likely see him somewhere in Hell."
