We had a discussion about this in the previous multi table special. I think the general consensus was doing NL would be pushing the companion to do a trick they were not trained in. NB: We wanted consistency for that as there were a lot of different GMs - thus the discussion. Our current GM shouldn't feel obliged by this, I don't think there is an official ruling on it anywhere. It did feel appropriate to me though, which is why I offer it here.

***Combat Over***

Turning your attention to the unconscious dark folk in the corner, you realize another deception. Basia Kalistoff, bound and unconscious, is under the effects of a disguise other spell. The relief in the Scarab Man's eyes is obvious to you all, and he gives you a muffled cheer. His cheer turns into a low moan as he winces in pain. The woman with red hair you recognize as Olivina. She is still gagged and bound to the organ seat. She radiates hostility as you approach.

All three captives have large visible bruises and shallow cuts on their bodies.

When you remove the gag from the man's mouth, he stammers his thanks, "My gratitude, all of you. I cannot begin to describe my terrible ordeal. I visiting family in Karcau only a day or two ago before I was abducted and taken here." he looks around with wide eyes "Where is here exactly?"

Looking back to Basia, he says "We are in the basement of the lodge."

The tattoo marks him as a member of the Esoteric Order of the Palatine Eye, an organization that is half secretive social club and half hierarchical occult society with strong founding ties to Ancient Osirion.

Omar feels the enchantment magic lift from Olivina. She still seems angry, but you might be able to reason with the diva. When you remove her gag, she moans theatrically, "Oh, you vile Pathfinders." she wails, "Abduct me, beat me savagely, kept me in the sewers until my adoring fans could search no longer, then drag me through dark tunnels to this profane cellar to rot." She gestures to the dark caller with her chin, "Have you murdered your slave, Zodarna, merely for showing me a kindness?"

I'm sure there is a tragic tale to be told here. However it was the lady of the lodge who requested we search you out. Olivina looks confused for a moment at Vrald's observation, "Basia was down here with me this whole time? But this could be an elaborate plot to cast the Pathfinders as heroes."

"You did all that for me?" Olivina curtsies and manages to look bashful at Zahra's explanation of the night's events. "At least you Pathfinders can appreciate a talented artist." she looks down at her torn and filthy gown, "But that beast slobbered all over my dress!"

Basia Kalistoff stirs as the healing light of Shelyn washes over her. She sits up slowly and shakes her head, "The dark folk caught me by surprise. I sat down for my evening meal after returning from my visit with Countess Livgrace. They emerged from the basement, taking me by surprise." she looks up sheepishly, "I'm glad you are here, Pathfinders"

Slowly Basia stands and looks at the restrained form of Zodarna, her mood lifting somewhat, "It looks like you have things under control. I'll go contact the authorities. I'll want your full reports as soon as you are able" She starts up the stairs.

Garinol takes Faeranduil's lantern and scouts the remaining area of the basement. He makes his way straight to the storage room on the south end of the dusty library. Just as he suspected, a gaping hole yawns in the floor of the chamber, leading to a subterranean lake.

Garinol explains, "Last time I was in this city, a dark stalker named Zoathrias was exacting his vengeance upon the former Venture Captain Skeldon Miregrold. He failed in his revenge and died for the trouble. The cavern below this lodge connects to the darklands." he gestures at Zodarna, "She must have used her shadow-walk abilities to get into the lodge and unseal the entrance."

Olivina's eyes are as wide as saucers as Garinol gruffly deduces how the shadowfolk planned to frame the society. He points out the missing costumes the dark folk used to appear as human pathfinders and the distinctive muddy footprints the dark folk's cloth-wrapped feet had left in the front hall.

At Vrald's summation she gasps, "A twist in the third act. I didn't see it before now. I'm sorry for assuming you were like all the other Pathfinders." she stands carefully, "But now I wish to return home. My understudy in the Orphan of Okeno is always sharp in the final solo."

As you all emerge from the basement, Erumont in tow, the Karcau guards are there to greet you. They thank you for your efforts and take a grateful Liand and an increasingly bossy Olivina to their homes.

Basia looks at the assembled group. "I'm sure you'd all like to rest. I will arrange for a meeting with Countess Livgrace in the morning. Well done, Pathfinders"

I will post the conclusion with Countess Livgrace tomorrow. For now, bask in success or clear up any lingering questions.

The next morning, simple breakfast trays arrive at your rooms two hours past dawn (9:00). At this relatively early hour, a gentle violin solo drifts through the inset grates left open either by choice or due to your exhaustion. An hour later, a runner knocks sharply and presents a folded note on a tray. A small silver key tied with a purple ribbon sits beside it.

Note:
Countess Livgrace requests an audience on the private stage.

The key neatly opens the discrete door to the auditoriums setting. When you arrive, you see Sasandra Livgrace on stage, seated in elaborate evening dress and playing the violin. Her eyes follow as you move into the room, but close again as she completes the musical movement with a bright arpeggio. She pauses a moment before setting her instrument and bow upon a small table beside her. Her smile is enigmatic as she addresses the assembled group, "I don't often get the opportunity to play upon a stage. It is nice sometimes to return to it." she clears her throat, "But I am not here to revel in simple pleasures. I am here to congratulate you for solving the case and saving the day." her smile broadens as he indicates you all, her eyes linger on Vrald. "In fact, most of the morning's gossip focuses on how 'The Pathfinders' helped protect Karcau, and how they performed a daring rescue of Olivina." Her eyes raise knowingly, "No doubt the publicity will improve your Society's standing among the city's aristocracy."

-----

Congratulations, Pathfinders! You defeated Zodarna and did so in a way that improves the Society's reputation in Ustalav (by convincing Olivina of your innocence, not causing a debacle with Zeffiro, capturing Zodarna alive, and ensuring both Basia and Liand survive). In addition, Vrald impressed Countess Livgrace with his introduction, earning him a boon: The Court Grows, as she considers joining the Sovereign Court.

Vrald settles into his comfortable seat at the Opera. For once the knight had left his armour, shield and sword behind. Upon the stage before him plays out a complex story of revenge, betrayal, love, mystery and magic.

The fine wine he drank earlier settles his mood, and the fine company he is currently in helps. Perhaps the only distraction is the loud purring sound that can be heard from the back of the opera box where, remarkably, a tiger sits, sleeping off its well earned meal.

His mind drifts a little, taking in the moment, if not the details of the story that unfolds.
Well, another feather in the cap of the Society. Let us hope that returning their star to them does the society some good. Although if the full story ever got out, I doubt it will bring us friends. Even if we were not the kidnappers, it happened because of a feud involving us.

Around the theatre the crowd rises to its feet at the acts completion, the applause echoing through the structure like thunder over a moorland. While most eyes are fixed on the stage and the diva at it's centre, a few turn to gaze at the figures in the box. And more than one of them raises their own hands in approval.

As the crowd moves to leave, Vrald stays sitting, his eyes slowly coming into focus on the stage. The lights of the theatre dim as he remains quietly seated, waiting for the candle to appear and the sad ghost to repeat her nightly vigil.

There is one that steel won't ever save. he thinks sadly, waving to the empty stage as he gets up to leave.

Faeranduil is using the opportunity to spend some additional time in the great Karcau libary. Strangely enough he finds himself in the section dealing with emotions.

This is really infuriating! Why can't I just say what is clear before my eyes? Why did it make me all warm inside when she smiled at me for petting her tiger? What is wrong with me? Am I sick? Which book can explain that to me, the assorted knowledge of ages must have something!

Zahra knows that box seats are as much as about being seen as doing the seeing. She garbs herself in an eye-catching gown with a very low draping back and a long flowing skirt, and enters the theatre with Omar on one side and her tiger, Pumpkin, on the other.

The performance is lovely. She can see Vrald relaxed and smiling, and watches as the others unwind. Even Faerunduil is surprisingly light hearted tonight.

A few weeks later, she travels out to the swamp, for she has a promise to keep. She's not afraid. Not only are Omar and Pumpkin with her, but one of Pumpkin's cubs, a delightful scamp named Tora, is as well. Tora is in that slightly awkward adolescent age, almost adult, but with big eyes and feet a little large for her frame. Tora climbs a tree, but returns back with Zahra whistles. All the Senay tigers are impeccably trained.

She brushes Tora's fur, leans up against Omar, and then plays fetch with both tigers while she patiently waits for the Swampers who will surely come.

Once the mission is complete, Garinol will nod his head in thanks and respects to the other Pathfinders. This aspect of Ustalav is one he has never really felt at ease with. Especially in these lands, there is too much work to be done to babysit spoiled opera stars.

Once the briefing has been concluded, and the other agents he had worked with say their "Until next time's", Garinol makes his way back out into the swamps. Hopefully he can be a small light in the darkness, and it seems like they might need a helping hand. Besides, the priest had always been interesting in the techniques of different people's arts of healing and divine disciplines. . .

Omar is delighted to create continual flame items for each of his fellow Pathfinders who want such an item, prioritizing them by whom needs to leave first. He waits until all the others are complete before replacing the spell on his own ioun stone.

On the night of the performance, Omar watches it with interest. Who would have thought that a ghost would show me a new way to perceive the beauty inherent in the show? He takes time to note the contributions that are often less obvious. The stage hands changing the sets, the costumes and props, everything that goes into the performance. Cooperation worthy of a Pathfinder.

After the show, he and Zahra make their way backstage to congratulate Olivina and the rest of the crew on the performance. He mingles a bit, taking time to talk with several people individually and complementing them on their individual part of the performance. It is important that all know that their contributions to art are appreciated!

After the mission is done, he takes some time to relax and paint. This time he takes inspiration from Mad Margaret. His painting is of one of the scenes from the play, showing ghost-versions of the stage hands, costumers, prop makers, and other people contributing to the finale.
