Crunch finished and fluff polished and elaborated somewhat. As Danior has a high enough Craft(alchemy) to make drow poison, would he be able to start with 4 doses at the crafted price of 25 gp each if selected?

Normally I'd say yes, but you guys aren't supposed to know that the drow exist at this point. Unless your character didn't know where he got the poison/it was a blackmarket deal with a shady elf/etc I'd have to say no. I hope that isn't asking too much?

Scarab Sages

Could it be a recipe he was taught during his training without knowing the origins of the poison? It doesn't need to be drow poison, it's just the cheapest injury poison available.

That'll work :)

All right, I am putting a foot in. I once did participate in a Second Darkness Campaign, but that died out after a month or so. Unfortunately I use the character in a different context now, so I'll have to create a new one... (Even though it's a different forum system a character should be unique and simultaneously used in different games, imho)

As Lluvia in this campaign.

If it is a problem that I have some knowledge about the beginning, please let me know.

Can't say what I create yet, I am gonna work on it at the week end and think about it until then. Right now I am in the mood to keep it simple... human fighter? We shall see... I'll choose a campaign trait before I choose anything else and it's not gonna be "Scouting for fiends" again.

I just reviewed what your party covered, and for the sake of not metagaming it shouldn't be that great of an issue save for the first encounter. I can trust you not to break that encounter? ;)

Silver Crusade

GM, how do you feel about the 3pp rogue talents? there are a couple I would look into, one of which is rogue Finesse, which gives rogues dex to damage.

this aside, how would you work a LN monk in a no-law town? would be follow rules set by his employer? or his own set of disciplines (much like a paladin's code) or just follow the rules of wherever he is at, morale quandaries be durned?

I am not gonna tell anyone about the zombie horde carving its way through the floor, promise. :)

Silver Crusade

ZOMBIES!!!!!

Lol, zombies...

Anywho, point the first: If you tell me which ones they are, I might allow three or four for you.

Point the second: It depends on the character of your character (see what I did there? :) ). If he is a native, the first and third ones would make sense. If he was not from Riddleport, the second one or a deviant of the third could be employed; examples of the latter being his code is to obey the "laws" of wherever he is.

That make sense?

Silver Crusade

yeah that makes sense, I was thinking about possibly having him be a monk that has come to see his art as a way to make a profit and provide a comfortable life for himself, (think Yin of yin & yang). I will elaborate more once I am home.

The same idea for a the rogue as well, but I have seen a ninja here and decided a monk may step on less toes. (or brawler, but I have limited knowledge with the class)

Okay, basic crunch in the character profile. I'll refine it in the next couple of days along with his story arc. If he should get picked, and if he should survive long enough, what would you say to him having a stray dog make an appearance every so often? I'm thinking of a Rhodesian Ridgeback type dog who Hal befriends and eventually becomes his animal companion.

Sounds good to me, should you make it it shall be a thing!

Okay thanks. Ill do the plain old 1/2 elf (unless you ment only full elf then it make her different and i will have to do abit of restructuring.
Ill get my sheet up tomorrow (maybe. date plans) also posting on monday is not always going to happen for me. but thats okay as my character is very quite anyway.

Names Azura, Magus- black blade / Rouge Half elf. is this cool?

As ice :) And should you make it, don't worry too much about the Monday thing, all I ask is at least a post a day.

I will be applying to this, but am waiting for another submission to be accepted or not to a different game before I make something. I have several ideas bouncing around already that could be very interesting to work with.

*Edit
Oh, is there a link to the free players guide? The only one I found has to be bought so I wanted to make sure I was not missing something.

*Edit Edit
Will you allow the variant tieflings? I am thinking about a demonborn tiefling, with the drow influence mentioned in the blurb for the ap it might be quite interesting to do.

Tieflings are one of my favorite races (surpassed only by Chelish PCs of select races), so my answer is yes to basically anything tiefling related.

As for the link, it should be in this site under "Second Darkness Player's Guide", a 36ish page PDF with player relevant info to build chars.

Heck with it, even though I have a similar character applied to a different game, I can't help making this one.

The character will be Nessa Meretrix, a pitborn tiefling sorceress and abbess. She was orphaned and raised by the Callistrian church in the city, taking to her worship readily and with great enthusiasm when she became an adult.

She will be built as an enchantress and battlefield controller with minimal offensive magic. Haven't decided on a bloodline yet but I am working on it. I'll likely have an alias and such together tomorrow sometime.

Silver Crusade

here are a few 3pp talents I would like you to look over, some are level 10 talents, but I would like to know which ones you are ok with, so I can build accordingly, I don't think any of these offer to much in the way of game breakingness.

concussive strikes

Eviscerating strikes

lethal acrobatics

opportunistic archer

Rogues Finesse

Dirty Strike

and, this archetype, this would be a must for the character concept I have in mind, if this is a no, I will make a monk-
Glory Rogue

@ Drogeney: Sounds good! Can't wait to see the finished result.

@ rorek55: I can't say no to those five you presented, or the archetype, so I'll say yes to these. Best of luck!

Here's Lachen's player. I'm switching characters to try Gabsen instead of Lachen,as Gabsen was created specifically for a Second Darkness campaign. I've added a few things on appearance and backstory.

Both are martial role characters

Here is Drogeney's submission. Let me know if there are things that need to be changed and yes, I know the trait selection may seems a little wonky, but it fits.

And here we go for mourge40k's official handle for this. And it seems I have competition for being the Abbess in the party now! Ought to be fun if both Nessa and Lilica make it in.

Would a goblin be an acceptable race to play? The concept is a ratcatcher squatting in Riddleport, who just can't stand the idea of not seeing this "golden goblin" everyone talks about.

Either spellless ranger or slayer.

You know what? Why not? :) If you're smart and clever with his RP it could just work. Write up an alias and some details and let me know what you come up with!

That would be an interesting pairing Lilica...and potentially very frightening too.

@ Nessa and Lilica: Everything seems to be in order, and yes, it is tempting to have both of you enter the campaign. Best of luck.

@ Gabsen: Even the seemingly unremarkable can do great things. Sorry, I get philosophical every once in a while. But things look in order, good luck!

I'm liking the interaction between GM Samael and the potential players in this thread, (too often you don't get any feedback at all) and Varisia has always fascinated me... But lets see what everyone else is playing?

Martial
Gramlag - Dwarven Fighter NG
Svetlana - JGray - Shield Slinging Brawler
LachenAnborian - human bloodrager
Hal’dorel elven ranger - LN
Mad Dog Talbot, barbarian
Gabsen, Human Fighter N

Arcane
Aratan (Daniel Stewart) Magus NG
Azura, Magus- black blade / Rouge Half elf. - ?
Nessa Meretrix, a pitborn tiefling sorceress and abbess - CN

Divine
Lilica Fancygirl, Elven Inquisitor of Zon-Kuthon. LE
Ripley Brumblestark (Pedro) gnome inquisitor of Nivi Rhombodazzle - CN

Skill
Danior Silvanus, Varisian Ninja - N
rprek55 glory rogue - ?

So what to play? Well If we're going to start in Riddle port, it's got to be a Varisian human, who likes gambling (a lot), obviously they worship one of the gods associated with luck (probably Desna or Calistra), perhaps even a cleric. I think she will defiantly own a harrow deck and, naturally she claims to be able to foresee the future, for a price.

There's a bunch of feats and traits that should gel together for this. I'll write up a background.

I think I may delay the choice between Desna and Calistra based on who gets selected (I have a slight preference for Desna, since I'm not really sure why a Calistran would ever want to leave Riddleport).

@ Silas: Thanks for the categories, its helpful.

Go for Desna, a little variety never hurt anyone, and if your preference is the goddess of luck you'll enjoy playing a Desnan more, I think. As for class, that's up to you.

Thinking of playing an Elf Magus with the Spell Dancer archetype. I'll have something whipped up by tonight.

Silver Crusade

ok, here is the concept.
born in riddleport, he was orphaned at a young age then after stealing just enough to get by was forced into a gang, he eventually grew to a very prominent status in the group (now a well known group within riddleport) eventually reached a spot where he was set up and nearly killed, he managed to escape and now lives in the city as a charismatic charlatan biding his time and waiting to get even and cannot be happier that he is free from the "rules" of the gang. He has a soft spot for kids, especially orphans, he thinks to try his luck at the new gambling event and hopefully kickstart a "business" of his own. He prides himself on knowing all the rumors around the town, and other more pertinent information.

thinking his stat block would like something like this-
Str:
Dex:16
Con:10
Int:14
wis:10
Cha:14

before racial mods. that, or give him a 13 int and 12 wis, which I feel may be better fit and in the long run.

@ Aneirin Rhodri: go for it!

@ rorek55: good concept, but what is his STR score? As for which scores to put in INT and/or WIS, that's up to whatever concept you wish to present.

I like Desna :) So my submission will be this character's brother (don't worry I don't expect them to meet in game).

Cameron Hawkwinter of Riddleport, inverterate gambler and Varisian Cleric:
The heat, the energy of the crowd. The heady smell of sweat, stale beer, tobacco and a dozen other drugs. The taste of tequila, raw and burning. The shouting of the crowd as I kiss the dice and roll! A 4 and a 3! They go wild, my seventh seven in a row! The odds are astronomical… Desna* be praised, for truly I am blessed. Yet who are these gentlemen? I have done nothing, I Cameron Hawkwinter am just lucky. Maybe I wasn’t borne with my brother’s ready charm and good looks, but by the gods the world is my oyster! My brother? He has to work to get the girls, Me? They kind of fall into my lap, literally out of second story windows.

But I digress, the gentlemen want me to leave. I try to explain I am not cheating, they don’t believe me, the insult! I would never cheat, or at least not in anyway that such neanderthals could divine. Pah! they throw me out into the filth lying piled up in the streets, but what is this? A golden florin wedged under that midden heap? Truly Riddleport is the god's own city, for where else could one’s fortune change so far and so fast! It’s a strange city, part riot, part home, but I like it and this florin shows it likes me.

* == Could easily be Calistra if the party is more evil than good.

RPG Superstar 2013 Top 4

Just finished the background... see how you like it.

Ripley Brumblestark

Background:
It was a clear spring Oathday in Whistledown when Ripley Brumblestark was born, the youngest of four brothers, delivered on 4th of Gozran as the bells struck 4 times. The repetition of such an auspicious number did not go unnoticed to his father Burrog, who shared the same date of birth and was a quite superstitious—and particularly fortunate—gnome. Burrog kept in their house a small shrine to Nivi Rhombodazzle, the gnomish goddess of luck, stealth and gambling, and the patriarch met the arrival of Ripley as a gift from the Grey Polychrome—a lucky charm, some would say.

Yet, what had once been reason for joy soon started eating away at Burrog as Ripley grew up, for with each passing year, Burrog's luck waned bit by bit. Among other misfortunes, such as a increasingly fragile health, Burrog's gambling habits cost him every possession his family had, and with it, his marriage and children. Ripley's mother, Fallabah, took upon herself to raise the Brumblestark kids, and from the moment Burrog stepped out of the scene, their lives immediately started improving again. Yet, from time to time, Burrog would show up at their door, dead drunk, threatening Fallabah and blaming Ripley for stealing his luck. Those episodes rarely ended well, with Ripley's older brothers restrainig Burrog and carrying him away by force to spend the night in lock-up.

As the years passed, Ripley started noticing that, indeed, he was lucky—or at least that's what other people always told him. He was always at the right spot at the right time, seizing opportunities as they showed up, finding riches in the most improbable circumstances. This realization led him to an activity which brought much dread to his mother and brothers: like his father before him, Ripley became an inveterate gambler, and even took it to a whole new level. By the time he reached adulthood, Ripley had become certain that fortune was on his side, and could not help proposing bets about anything and everything.

Now a grown-up, he often met his father in the few gambling halls of Whistledown, but always avoided him—until on Ripley's 44th birthday, Burrog sat at his table dead set on playing against his own son. Ripley was merciless, and kept winning round after round; with nothing left to bet with, Burrog made an irrecusable offer to play a final, definitive hand. The winner would keep not only the jackpot, but also the right to remain in Whistledown; the loser, however, would immediately leave town, never to return. Ripley accepted, and lost.

He stood up and left without being able to say his goodbyes to his mother and siblings, as per the terms of the bet. As the gnome marched away from his home and family, he tripped and fell on a rock, landing with his face next to a shiny gold disc engraved on one side with a six-sided die, the symbol of Nivi Rhombodazzle, and on the other with the words "luck is fickle". He took it as a message from the goddess—sometimes, relying solely on luck is not enough. On that day, Ripley realized that Nivi would stand by him as long as he did his part, which, as a matter of fact, did not change him much. To this day, whenever he is too cocky about his chances, the occasional streak of bad luck soon follows.

Ripley spent the next decades traveling around Varisia, getting in and out of trouble, and always pushing his luck. About three weeks ago, he arrived in Riddleport, drawn by the news of a great tournament taking place in the Golden Goblin gambling hall. Settling on the Free-Coin district, Ripley has been enjoying his stay and testing the talents of his future opponents in the tournament, spending many a night gambling in several taverns and inns. His visits to Zinher's Arena have been quite lucrative after a few well placed bets, which has drawn the attention of Clegg Zincher himself. The crimelord was furious to see someone making more profit than he, and ordered his thugs to teach Ripley a lesson after just a few visits; after being roughed up and robbed of all his money, Ripley was barred from entering the Arena grounds; acting out of spite, he started hanging around giving tips on who to bet on to folks visiting the place. Needless to say, Zincher has had an eye out for Ripley ever since.

@ Pedro Coelho: Well written, good usage of NPCs to get involved in the AP right away, and reason enough to begin the campaign. May Nivi smile on your odds :)

Scarab Sages

As a hedonist, I relish the opportunity to have a partner in crime. Gamble all the moneys!

Ok, I think I have him at 90%. The profile is updated with his stats and three sections of fluff. If you have a chance I'd enjoy any thoughts you have on Hal so far.

Perhaps his employer is sending him to follow a certain gambler?

@ Hal'dorel: I'm enjoying the depth you are creating with your character. All the applications so far are very good, making it harder and harder to soon make a decision. Hal is no exception. Good work, good luck, and happy gaming to all.

Out of curiosity, are you going to close recruitment earlier if the submissions start tapering off/stop earlier? Just curious as I have never seen oen with a deadline of more than a week out before.

@ Nessa and everyone else: Yeah, I will probably close apps by Dec 5, as I didn't expect a lot of interest. That means those who are accepted but haven't finished writing up details (such as stats or backgrounds) will have a weekend to hopefully get those things done before Dec 7th or so. We'll start sometime that week. Sound good?

Seems good to me, though don't feel you have to rush the deadline any. Not that I'm complaining mind you.

Scarab Sages

I do not envy your approaching decision. Seems to be a difficult choice.

Dotting for interest. I've always wanted to play this AP.

I'm thinking a tiefling wizard. I'll get started on it.

Silver Crusade

Oohh. Me and danior... Tag team crime Lords! Lol

I've done a first pass on Cameron's background. I'll add some more later.

I can say for sure that there's not going to be any hard feelings on my part regardless of who gets in. Lot of very interesting characters are getting pitched here.

Agreed! Everyone did a great job!

Moat definitely. Some excellent backgrounds and concepts! Good luck everyone!

Yes, that's what I have in mind: using a very basic build and try to find something unusual with the character via RP

And Nessa&Lilica seems to be a match made in Hell... ;-)
A very interesting combo, to say the least.
