GM Kate |
Joli’s attack strikes true, but Silt’s does not.
Cedar and Mitzi up!
Cedar Cruise |
Cedar and Mitzi move up!
Mitzi attempts to bite purple:
Bite: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (7) + 2 = 9 damage: 1d4 + 1 ⇒ (1) + 1 = 2
GM Kate |
The pink choker reaches out for Purpose, wrapping arms around his throat. Although the wyrwood doesn't need air, the wood at his neck starts to splinter and collapse.
tentacle arm: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (13) + 6 = 19
slap: 1d4 + 3 ⇒ (3) + 3 = 6
grab: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (8) + 8 = 16
squeeze: 1d4 + 3 ⇒ (2) + 3 = 5
The other choker reaches out for the tastiest-looking treat, Mitzi.
tentacle arm, fatigued: 1d20 + 6 - 1 ⇒ (16) + 6 - 1 = 21
slap, fatigued: 1d4 + 3 - 1 ⇒ (1) + 3 - 1 = 3
grab, fatigued: 1d20 + 8 - 1 ⇒ (14) + 8 - 1 = 21
squeeze, fatigued: 1d4 + 3 - 1 ⇒ (2) + 3 - 1 = 4
He looks on bewildered as the bundle of fluff disappears in his hands.
Everyone is up! Purpose is grappled.
Tobias "Toby" Hawthorn |
Toby runs into the room past the choker wrapped around Purpose, seeking a clear shot. Marked my path on the map. Provokes from pink choker, if they can take an AoO while grappling Purpose. When he finds one, he wheels and fires.
kinetic blast, pbs: 1d20 + 4 + 1 ⇒ (1) + 4 + 1 = 6
damage, pbs: 1d6 + 4 + 1 ⇒ (6) + 4 + 1 = 11
Purpose Creche |
Fragments of blonde wood tumble from his collar, but Purpose Creche does not struggle in the choker's grip. His body is still, his feet hang just above the cavern floor, but his sword arm drives the Azlanti blade towards his captor's torso. The mists of Toby's errant projectile shine briefly with its light.
Attack, grappled –2: 1d20 + 6 - 2 ⇒ (12) + 6 - 2 = 16 for 3d6 + 4 ⇒ (1, 6, 1) + 4 = 12 damage.
My AC is now 17, and I'm 11 HP from permadeath!
Prince Joli Toli |
Round 2
Frostbite; +2 flank if Option B: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (8) + 4 = 12
Joli steps closer to the grappled choker and lashes out with his tongue.
NL + fatigue: 1d6 + 2 ⇒ (3) + 2 = 5
Joli attacks his current opponent
additional sneak: 1d6 ⇒ 1.
GM Kate |
Purpose stays calm and thrusts his sword backward. The choker crumbles.
Joli takes advantage of the momentum to attack the other one, who shivers with cold. Unfortunately, he still stands!
Silt and Cedar to go.

Cedar calls out for aid!
”Hank, we need your help!”
Hank arrives from the plane of Celetial eagles and with a flurry of energy he spits out his cigarette and attacks! (Sometimes on their plane eagles like to enjoy a smoke, especially if they’re out drinking.)
”Skeee!’ Hank smites the choker!
Talon: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (2) + 3 = 5 damage: 1d4 + 1 ⇒ (4) + 1 = 5
Talon: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (4) + 3 = 7 damage: 1d4 + 1 ⇒ (1) + 1 = 2
Beak: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (1) + 3 = 4 damage: 1d4 + 1 ⇒ (1) + 1 = 2
Are you kidding me?! Out of 3 attempts?! This RNG...

The remaining choker stumbles at the sudden appearance of the celestial bird. Angry at Hank's presence (or perhaps, desirous of the cigarette), he reaches out to grab the new arrival.
tentacle arm, fatigued: 1d20 + 6 - 1 ⇒ (19) + 6 - 1 = 24
slap, fatigued: 1d4 + 3 - 1 ⇒ (3) + 3 - 1 = 5
grab, fatigued: 1d20 + 8 - 1 ⇒ (9) + 8 - 1 = 16
squeeze, fatigued: 1d4 + 3 - 1 ⇒ (4) + 3 - 1 = 6
He growls as the bird -- and the cigarette -- poof out of existence.
Everyone is up!
Prince Joli Toli |
Joli shakes his head at the choker. "Were I you I’d save my wrath for me. Because..." He thrusts at the creature with his rapier.
Rapier, sneak: 1d20 + 4 + 2 ⇒ (11) + 4 + 2 = 17
Lethal: 1d6 - 1 + 1d6 ⇒ (3) - 1 + (4) = 6
Purpose Creche |
Purpose Creche looks to the remaining enemy, but when his head turns, the sound of cracking wood once again fills the chamber. He takes a cautious step backwards, sheathes the sword, and pulls the Erastilian bow from his back.
Sheathe, 5 ft. step, draw
GM Kate |
He continues to growl at the disappearing creatures, until collapsing with the strike from Joli.
When the group searches this room, there is a burlap sack stashed in a nook in the wall, filled with knickknacks apparently taken from the colony.
You find:
a porcelain tea set thrown in haphazardly, so several handles are broken
a steel flask full of whiskey etched with an elaborate "R"
a silver mirror with a rose motif
a set of dice in a wooden cup capped with leather
two vials of defoliant
four star candle fireworks
a thunderstone
a meridian belt
a wadded-up shield cloak
Cedar Cruise |
Cedar thanks Mitzi and Hank for their sacrifices and then detects for magic.
GM Kate |
You detect the items from my last post. Sorry to jump the gun; I wanted to get that up before I left for the airport.
Prince Joli Toli |
Joli wipes his sword and sings a quiet prayer over the limp bodies of the chokers.
"I imagine these caves have some outlet that could make them an ongoing incursion point. Maybe we could collapse the tunnels or put some barriers and signal alarms in place." He looks at Purpose’s damaged parts. "How might we help you repair? I don’t know any prayers but I want to help."
Purpose Creche |
Purpose Creche looks up from the cape draped over one thin arm. His body cracks and grinds as he does.
"Time and energy. Self-transmutation into what I was before injury. It's a slow process, and not one to undertake if we're potentially unsafe." He motions to the cave's contents. "It's similar to determining the nature of these objects. I holding them, aski them what they are, listen deeply. But repairing myself is different. Harder. I suppose it's hard to know what we are."
More groaning of damaged wood, and he picks up the flask.
"H. Hendrake? Another question for Ramona or the charter. More questions here, too—there were other tunnels."
It takes me 1 minute per item to identify things and there's a decent amount of stuff, so I assume we'll do it once we finish exploring and get to the surface
Prince Joli Toli |
Joli practices climbing and stealthing while his companions search and restore themselves. Once they’re ready, he resumes his scouting position. (See map)
Stealth: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (15) + 7 = 22
Purpose Creche |
"Best to be cautious."
Purpose Creche then freezes in place, still holding the flask in one hand. The damage to his neck, just visible above the high collar, slowly disappears. Wood expands into and across the cracks and gouges, like an incoming tide or frost growing on a pane of glass, but stops just short of the ragged edges.
When the wyrwood moves again, the creaking is much softer.
2d6 ⇒ (4, 6) = 10
Yeah, 10 minutes - once a day make whole SLA
GM Kate |
A section of the northern wall in this spacious cavern has been hollowed out and veins of various crystals exposed, which refract any light cast upon their surface. Small piles of rock are heaped on the ground nearby, where the earth has been carefully chiseled away to expose the potentially precious stones.
Two small creatures looking like nothing quite so much as scorpions made of gemstones work doggedly at the walls, carefully, almost tenderly, scraping away rock to reveal colorful gems beneath. They don't appear to notice the silent grippli moving in.
Prince Joli Toli |
Joli sneaks back and whispers to his comrades. "There are some scorpion-like creatures that seem to be skilled at digging up gems. They seem harmless. I wonder if we could befriend them."
GM Kate |
If anyone wants to make the Knowledge (planes) check based on Joli’s description, I’ll allow that.
Tobias "Toby" Hawthorn |
"Maybe we should just leave them alone? Mama always told me to stay away from scorpions."
Cedar Cruise |
Kn: Planes: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (13) + 6 = 19
Cedar considers Joli’s description.”They could be crysmals, a type of elemental creature. They’ll probably aggressively protect their gems if we try to disturb them. Did you see anything else of interest in there?”
Prince Joli Toli |
"Nothing else. I can try that other passage leading north if you like." He considers. "The crysmals are beautiful. We’re lucky to have so much wonder in the world."
Cedar Cruise |
”The other passage might be worth investigating. The chockers had to have gotten here somehow.”
Prince Joli Toli |
"Let’s be as quiet as we can as we pass the crysmal lair!" Joli makes his way through along the walls, moving quietly.
Stealth: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (1) + 7 = 8
Unfortunately he dislodges some loose rocks as he’s passing the lair.
Cedar Cruise |
Oh no!
Cedar cringes as he watches the rocks crumble and fall.
Tobias "Toby" Hawthorn |
Toby's ears flatten when the rocks fall. He tenses, listening for sounds of alarm.
Uh oh.
GM Kate |
As the rocks settle, you hear a sudden scuttle of activity from the cavern, and then only quiet.
Cedar Cruise |
Spellcraft: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (5) + 6 = 11
Cedar can't quite make out the spell being cast. He holds a finger to his lips, listening for any other sounds of casting.
Prince Joli Toli |
Joli breathes a sigh of relief as the attack seems not to come. He flashes a grin back towards Cedar and moves on.
GM Kate |
You don't see or hear anything living in this passage. The longer that you travel, you eventually spot sunlight and an exit.
Purpose Creche |
Purpose Creche considers the odd creatures and their subterranean work. "Interesting beings. They reproduce by gathering enough material to bud off their offspring. Let's leave them be."
He stops when he sees Cedar's signal, cocking his head. Flecks like ash appear and fade around his floating lights. (casting heightened awareness)"Someone has just created an illusion. A soundless figment. Be wary."
Knowledge (planes): 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (13) + 8 = 21
Any insights on how we could redirect the crysmals without fighting them? I have inklings that the crystals and things down here could be useful resources for the colony. Or maybe like, a catch and release thing? Guess that'd require us finding another crystal seam somewhere...
Spellcraft: 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (17) + 9 = 26
Prince Joli Toli |
Joli returns once he sees sunlight. "It does lead outside. Shall we finish exploring down here before we exit?"
Purpose Creche |
Purpose Creche nods. "The rightmost passage of the tunnel that leads from the well."
Prince Joli Toli |
Joli smiles and leaps over Purpose’s head, landing softly and making his way back towards the well. He once again sneaks, this time down the right side passage.
Stealth: 1d29 + 7 ⇒ (5) + 7 = 12
GM Kate |
I'm actually going to back you up slightly.
The dancing lights suddenly extinguish as darkness drops over the cavern.
The lights suddenly return, and the room is still.
GM Kate |
Cedar Cruise |
Prince Joli Toli |
Joli whispers to those who were caught blind. "Some flying, tentacled creature that came and picked up one of the choker bodies." He waits for feedback, his big eyes almost glowing in the dark.
Tobias "Toby" Hawthorn |
"Hey, uhh...can we get out of here?" Toby scans the walls and ceiling nervously, looking for a creepy flying tentacle monster.
Cedar Cruise |
"I saw the creature too but I'm not sure what it was. Don't worry Toby. It didn't attack us when it had the opportunity. Maybe it's some kind of scavenger. I think we should keep investigating the area."
GM Kate |
If anyone without darkvision wants to attempt the knowledge check at a -2 penalty, you may do so.
