Chapter 3: "What Lies in Dust". Part One: "Within the Crux"

In Westcrown, darkness brings fear and death, the night haunted by the spawn of a terrible curse. Striving to free the city from its decades-old blight, the Irises must reveal a long-buried secret and a treasure locked away for ages. Their journey will set them against the scum of Westcrown’s underworld, denizens of the haunted night, and the very forces of Hell itself, all in an attempt to rekindle the memories of long-dead spirits with stories still to tell. Yet what those souls reveal might prove even deadlier than the city’s midnight curse.

Thanks for your questions, Faustinia.

I consider the sludge in the cavern as neither water nor earth, but as a mixture of both. If mud elemental featured in the summon monster list (and were legal for play in this campaign) I would have suggested them.

Coming to your specific needs, I will rule that:

1. The sludge is too gross for the celestial dolphins to swim into. That doesn't mean that I wouldn't allow you to summon them. On the contrary, I would allow it, but with some specifics. Considering that the sludge is dense and only 4 feet deep, I would rule that dolphins swim through it as through difficult terrain.

2. I would allow both earth and water elementals to benefit from their respective masteries. Anyway, both of them will move through the sludge as through difficult terrain.

Hope it helps!

In my tabletop group a brand new player is playing a sorcerer and was agonizing over a second level spell. He wound up tentatively taking summon monster II. We then had a semi-aquatic fight, and he summoned what I can only describe as a horde of dolphins round after round, cackling like a madman as they send skeletons pinwheeling through the air. Made my day.

Not that it matters for Faustinia’s poor Fortitude saves, but should we include the penalties for being sickened into our fortitude saves against it in subsequent rounds?

In other words, does being sickened for 1 round last until just before we make the new save? Or does failing mean we're sickened when we make the next save?

Mummy rot. Filth fever. Gotta contract them all. At least I suspect I can rest and recover from these once out of this place.

Anyway yes, you'll be able to recover from them once this fight is over.

Woo-hoo! Great job, everyone. We definitely had some harrowing moments, but I'm glad that we pulled through.

There's a lot to process in Giuseppe's post. That will have to wait until I'm home from work. For now, I'll say that Catina would like to take the intelligent glaive, with an eye to 'cleansing' it. We also have to find a way to get out of the Manor, in our present state. We don't look too well, but neither do the rest of the party-goers (I hope).

That was suitably epic, and good lord have Varius and the others been through hell.

Looking at the goodies, none of them are of particular use to Varius. He's got his short sword and is a happy boy.

Well done, everyone! Thanks especially to our brave friends who dove into the nasty muck to retrieve the treasure! :)

I've added all items to the loot list - the general list, the still to claim, and the generic supplies. Feel free to put in requests for item claiming or to move other things to generic supplies.

My other item notes:
-The only item that I've claimed so far is the Andoren spellbook. I figured that was not at risk of being in contention. :)
-When deciding whether someone wants to keep that mithral scimitar around: it's not quite the style of weapon our party usually uses, but it's worth noting that mithral weapons DO count as silver for the purpose of overcoming damage reduction (without the damage penalty that comes with alchemical silver piercing or slashing weapons).
-I haven't checked the spell rusting grasp yet to know which of us are able to use it. I'll check on it later, unless someone else does.

Edit: okay, now I've added all the items. I forgot to add the "King's" longswords at first.

Petals could take one of the magic swords to have a magic weapon but I think its better to sell them so Alessandro will have enough to enchant at least one of his weapons.

The wand of cure moderate wounds is lovely.

Hi guys. I've decided that I'm going to bow out of this game as we wrap up this chapter of the adventure. I just started a new job and my two year old daughter is taking up the majority of my time. It's been a struggle to post every day and I haven't been able to put as much quality into them as I'd like to. You guys have all been great, it's just a time thing and I just don't have enough of it lately. I can still post a few more times to tie up any loose ends to finish the chapter but then I'm going to take a break.

Catina, I need to consider what spells to pick up, and I had a question for you.

Both of our newly acquired 3rd level spells are a bit limited right now, but if our next step involves trying to solve the city's shadow beast problem I imagine that daylight will be a very useful spell to pick up. I've only got so much gold to throw around for my spellbook, though, and it's on both of our spell lists. Do you think you would prepare it regularly enough (if we know or strongly suspect that we'll be going into heavily shadow-related encounters) that I could not make it a priority if I'm low on spellbook funds? Or do you think it would be better for me to prioritize it so we both can be prepared if necessary?

3 points in disable device
1 point in perception
1 point in knowledge planes
1 point in performance singing
1 point in stealth
2 points in diplomacy

second level spells known: invisibility, heroism

new feat: improved feint

Catina level-up changes:

Hit points +7 (1d8 +2 Con)
Channel energy: increased to 3d6
3rd-level spells: 2+1
Feat: Power attack (*)
Skills: 2 points +1 Int +1 fcb
Add to Diplomacy, Knowledge religion, Perception and Sense Motive.

* Like usual, I dithered a lot over which feat to take. In the end, with Alessandro leaving us and Petals going more for skills, I've decided to add some melee 'Oomph' to Catina. Good alternatives (and still possible choices for level 7) were Blind-fight, Combat reflexes and possibly even a crafting feat. The latter depends a lot on which way the campaign goes, of course, and whether we'll have enough downtime to make crafting a useful skill.

Spells for the new day

0: light, detect magic, read magic, mending
1st: bless, comprehend languages, protection from evil, shield of faith, charm person (D)
2nd: find traps, owl's wisdom, lesser restoration, aid (D)
3rd: empty, empty, protection from energy (D)

I've left my third-level spell slots open, for story reasons. It seems only natural that Catina and the others will go to the temple, and she will do what she can do help them. As a matter of course, she learns new magic (and studies remove curse and remove disease in her empty slots, as needed)

Council of Thieves Maps

OK, let's try to see if we can solve this disease matter.

We have the following conditions to remove:

Alessandro - filth fever, mummy rot, 7 Constitution damage, 6 Charisma damage
Lady Faustinia - mummy rot
Petals - 5 Strenght damage
Varius - filth fever, blinding sickness

First consideration: unfortunately, Arael can't cast remove disease. It is beyond its caster abilities. As such, your only source of free healing is Catina.

Catina has two 3rd level empty slots that could fill with remove disease. But the priority here is the mummy rot. In order to heal it, a remove curse spell is needed. Again, only Catina is powerful enough to cast it.

As a result, the most reasonable option is that Catina prepares two remove curse in her empty spell slot.

In the meantime, Arael can help Petals and Alessandro with their ability damage, as can Catina with her single lesser restoration. You can count them as removed for the purposes of this adventure, but you will have to get to the Shrine of Aroden first.

According to your suggestions, I gather that you're heading to the temple. To heal your disease, I assume. To that end, I need to know if Catina succeeds at removing the curse associated with the mummy rot (caster level checks needed).

If this is the way you want to go, let me know how and when you're going at the temple. We will roleplay the scene, since it could be potentially interesting from a RP point of view.

Male CG Human Rogue 1 | HP: 21/21 | AC: 14 TAC: 13 | F:+3 R:+5 W:+1 | Perception +2 | Speed 25ft |Reactions: Nimble Dodge (+2 AC vs one melee attack)

Well let's see how Varius is doing:

Filth Fever Onset: 1d3 ⇒ 3
Blinding Sickness Onset: 1d3 ⇒ 3

Woo! So Varius can hold out without losing his eyesight while we resolve the mummy rot and then come around to his illnesses.

Sounds good. It's poetic as well, that remove curse is the first level-3 spell that Catina will cast, after being the victim of the runecurse herself. I'll make an in-character post shortly to suggest a course of action.

To know how things will end up, I'll make the necessary rolls here. After learning the remove curse spell and preparing it, Catina will cast owl's wisdom. She wants to be as prepared as she can before her first castings of this new spell. Also, I'll be assuming that she uses 'Bit of Luck' on herself for both attempts.

Remove curse, mummy rot, Alessandro: 1d20 + 8 + 2 ⇒ (20) + 8 + 2 = 30
Remove curse, mummy rot, Alessandro: 1d20 + 8 + 2 ⇒ (7) + 8 + 2 = 17

Remove curse, mummy rot, Faustinia: 1d20 + 8 + 2 ⇒ (12) + 8 + 2 = 22
Remove curse, mummy rot, Faustinia: 1d20 + 8 + 2 ⇒ (2) + 8 + 2 = 12

Not sure how fast you want to go, but I'll preroll Catina's attempts at curing the disease the following day. I'll also study two lesser restorations for the next day, to help Petals.

Remove disease, mummy rot, Alessandro: 1d20 + 8 + 2 ⇒ (16) + 8 + 2 = 26
Remove disease, mummy rot, Alessandro: 1d20 + 8 + 2 ⇒ (9) + 8 + 2 = 19

Remove disease, mummy rot, Faustinia: 1d20 + 8 + 2 ⇒ (19) + 8 + 2 = 29
Remove disease, mummy rot, Faustinia: 1d20 + 8 + 2 ⇒ (8) + 8 + 2 = 18

Lesser restoration, Petals: 1d4 ⇒ 4
Second doesn't seem to be needed, after all. Could use it on Alessandro, depending on circumstances.

Giuseppe, I hinted at it in an earlier of Catina's posts: Could we maybe visit Calseinica and see if she'd be willing to take care of Alessandro while he recovers? It would make Catina happy to give them an excuse to be together, and it would explain why Alessandro isn't with us anymore when we reach the temple. Unless of course, you had other plans... :)

1 person marked this as a favorite.

My post didn't really drive the action forward, but I felt I had some catching up to do.

Also, recap on everone's condition: Catina healed the mummy rot (curse and disease) from Alessandro and Faustinia, while we paid to have Varius's diseases cured. Catina healed Petals for 5 Strength damage, and still has 1 lesser restoration left for this day. We've also had one night's rest, which means 1 point of healing for each affected ability score:

Still damaged:
Varius - 1 Strength damage
Faustinia - 1 Constitution damage
Alessandro - Quite a lot of damage, but that's taken care of (I hope)

Catina can heal one of you, but both points don't have a negative effect and are gone after another night of sleep.

With our next bit of downtime, I imagine we'll want to divvy up loot and sell off what we don't need. I've already subtracted the 450 gp from our sheet for the cost of removing the diseases. We can start on the other stuff once everything has been claimed or not.

So, does anyone have any particular interest in holding on to anything? We should start claiming items so we know what to sell.

Faustinia is right. Claim those items!

I've claimed one of the potions, and could use the feather fall ring if no one else wants it. The weapons are all martial, which is a bit of a shame. And Catina's headslot is already filled.

For the money we have after selling loot, Catina would like to have her weapon enchanted. I could also use 1k to have the breastplate enchanted, if we have a bit of gold left over. My AC is starting to get decent, so an upgrade in that department would be nice.

I think we should keep the rope of climbing, hat of disguise, and wand of cure moderate wounds as generic needs. Petals can wield the weapons thanks to the paladin level, but I'd rather enchant her hammer if that is an option. She also definitely needs to buy a bow.

Sorry Gisueppe! Got sick. Posting now.

Going over the loot list in detail...

Varius is heavily specialized in short swords at this point. So although he can use the very nice longswords or battle axe, he's probably best-served getting money and investing in fancier short swords.

Varius will claim the golembane scarab and potion of gaseous form unless someone else wants that.

I'll go through and see what I would want to claim in a bit.

But first I wanted to ask Varius if he was at all interested in the masterwork full plate. I don't know what your plans are going forward as your armor training increases. If you don't want it now but would want it later down the line, we could store it at the temple of Aroden. It would be cheaper to have an existing set refitted than to sell this and buy another later.

Council of Thieves Maps

Just wanting to confirm that it is possible to have your weapons and armor enchanted, as long as you only need a +1 enchantment. It will take a few days of waiting of course.
