Herm Dunlaven |
So S16 is locked? We will try S18 then I guess.
Attempting to push the door Herm finds it locked, he gives it a good push but it doesn't move. "Harrold can you open this door? If not we will move on."
Herm steps back.
Tamara Hart |
Tamara prays for divine guidance for Harrold as he attempts to open the door. "Dear Desna, please guide this man as he tries to open this door so we might explore and discover what lies beyond."
"Aww, what a letdown. We defeat the haunt only to find we can't get further. It might even come back before we can find a way to open the door. I guess we don't really have anything to do but head to the next place." Tamara is disappointed to discover the facts.
In the future you can assume Tamara will pray for your success Harrold (guidance). Let's go where Herm suggested next.
GM Foxy |
Walking back into the foyer the burnt ghostly faces of the prisoners move in and slam the doors shut. With every repetition it becomes less scary and more annoying. But it is still unsettling.
Moving through the door and the room with the benches - now seeing the wooden stage from the other side of the bars - and then through the next door the group enters the next room. The northeast wall of this room has partially fallen, revealing the dark, murky waters of the pond outside. Moldering training dummies and other similar equipment hint that this room may have once been a training area for the guards. In the northeast part of the room, the floor around a dark, jagged hole is surrounded by black scorch marks.
I think Tamara hasn't got her damage healed yet.
Tamara Hart |
That's correct, still down 2 HP
"Those faces are getting annoying... But at least they are not harming us." Tamara says while they wait for the doors to open again.
"I wonder if that might be where the fire started. We should scan the area before venturing further. Maybe what you did to discover the remnants of the haunt can also be used to discover others before they appear Herm? Desna, please reveal any magic in the area." Tamara prays and clutches her holy butterfly.

"I will have a look around to see if I can spot the location of the magical haunt."
Herm will slowly look around the room, scanning for any concentrations or whatever makes up the haunt.

Moving slowly towards the hole in the ground he looks around the edge and then down the hole.
"Can someone bring some light over here and drop it down? We need to know how far this goes down. Also why the water came through the wall over there."
GM Foxy |
Herm walks into the room towards the hole in the ground. In the dark in the hole he detects undead and his question for light is answered. But different than he expected. Three flaming skulls rise from the basement through the hole.

(everybody else please. These skulls are tiny and provoke AoOs when attacking)
Herm Dunlaven |
Herm backs up a step, putting his hammer in both hands.
"By the Inheritor I didn't expect an answer like that, they are undead creatures." A bit of a smile comes to Herm's face
AOO?: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (10) + 4 = 142d6 + 4 ⇒ (2, 2) + 4 = 8

Tamara Hart |
Tamara grabs her butterfly tightly as the skulls come hurtling towards them. "More burning heads!" She starts chanting. "Protect us from this evil. Desna, I beg you..." Her prayer falters as the two men quickly smash all the skulls. "Wow! That was fast. I didn't have time to do much of anything. Great job!" She smiles towards them.
Tamara Hart |
"I guess we should search the area, but carefully. I'll follow behind you Herm. Oh and there isn't anything magical here, at least there is that." Tamara says cautiously as she prepares to look through the area.
Herm Dunlaven |
Sorry I meant for that last attack to be in initiative order, I was just putting it up so that if combat went fast I wasn't holding it up. But everyone seems ok with the out come."
Herm nods to Harrold, smiling at the ladies.
"I know that when it comes time you will out perform myself in your areas of power. We can pair up and search in teams for anything that is a miss." He looks over to the broken wall and outside, "Tamara and myself will look to the water and that area over there."
He will turn to Amira before moving along "I agree with it being odd that in a building that has been burnt for so long that the doors remain locked. The Knights always had a person who could disable all locks, I never really picked up on it and the Inheritor frowns upon her chosen performing the act."
Tamara Hart |
"It's actually quite beautiful." Tamara comments on the sky turning into night as she points upwards. "The light is about to run out. Desna, please illuminate the way for your servant." She touches his glove again and it shines bright as a torch.
"Guess there really is nothing here though." She says dismayed as the finish up their search by taking a good hard look at the burned area.
perception: 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (10) + 9 = 19
GM Foxy |
Taking a look down the burnt hole shows a cavernous chamber that may have once been an underground cellblock. But it has long since collapsed. The crumbled walls are thick with mold and stained with soot, and heaps of fallen stones and charred wooden beams line the area. Water drips and seeps along the walls, collecting in a dark, murky pool in the middle of the room. To the north, the twisted remains of a wood and iron lift lie in a heap in a shallow portion of the pool.
Climbing down here would be really hard, as the hole is in the middle of the room below and the room itself has a heigt of about 20 feet.
Herm Dunlaven |
After looking around the room again with his new friends, Herm will take one last look out over the lake.
"So through the water or the door? I vote door, since I tend to sink rather quickly in all this gear."
Herm Dunlaven |
"If that is what you want to do I don't see why we cannot. Maybe you can buy some lock picks while we are in town before coming back? I can give you some gold for them."
Herm will make sure the area is clear before leaving the Prison
Tamara Hart |
"I say we stay. We got light. We might find a key for that door and it would be nice to open it before that cold spot re-manifests. I still haven't used most of the powers granted to me from Desna, so it won't be a problem to keep everyone healthy if we do get in battle. Let's go through the door. If the fall doesn't kill us, then drowning in all this armor probably will. Please Harrold let's continue for a bit more?"
Herm Dunlaven |
Herm will open the door, and peek in. Looking back over his shoulder he will look at the 3 people behind him.
"One last room then we will head back, I would like to eat something and have a talk with Kendra about this place, maybe her father has some other information about this place."
Tamara Hart |
"Well, I think we can do a couple more rooms. It's after sundown, but it's still not that late. But I guess dinner would indeed be nice. Let's check out this room carefully. Desna please guide our eyes to find something interesting before we leave." She joins Herm on the search through this outdoor area.

Herm will move into the room far enough to see around the corner, looking around for anything that could be of use or enemies.

A huge stone furnace dominates this room, large enough for a child to climb inside. An ancient fire has burned away the entire east wall the room, providing a panoramic, if eerie, view of the lake beyond. That same lake has gradually expanded into the room, flooding its eastern half.
You notice the face of the furnace beginning to animate into a leering skull-like visage made of metal and bars. And you scent the sudden rising stink of burning flesh.
Tamara Hart |
Knowledge Religion: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (9) + 7 = 16
What is that thing? Could it be another haunt?
Tamara Hart |
No idea what it does or anything though, right?
"Another haunt! Let's get out of here before it harms us. Not worth fighting if we are going to leave anyway." Tamara says as she retreats towards the previous room. "It's susceptible to cold though."
Herm Dunlaven |
As the blast of fire washes over Herm he throws his arms up to protect his face, the heat is just to much and he falls unconscious to the ground in front of the fire place.
Tamara Hart |
Wasn't Herm at full? He should merely be at 0 and can then run away? Or am I missing something?
Tamara turns when she sees her companion go down in flames. "Herm, no! Desna, please grant me the power to bring this man back to life! He deserves so much more." She touches the fallen man and a soft white light spreads out to cover up some of the burns.
1d8 + 1 ⇒ (5) + 1 = 6
Tamara Hart |
If he's staggered I don't want to go back in.
"Herm, no! Come here and get out of the fire line. I'll heal you." It tears Tamara up inside to see him burnt so badly, but since he's still standing she would rather not risk the horrible flames herself.
Ready an action to heal Herm once he gets out.: 1d8 + 1 ⇒ (7) + 1 = 8
Herm Dunlaven |
Sorry I forgot to update my sheet with the healing.
Herm will stagger out of the area once the flames have died down, his armor hot and burns on his face where arms didn't protect it enough.
"By the Inheritor, I didn't expect the stone cold fire place to belch flames at me. I assume that throwing more flames at it won't help. Maybe Harrold is right and we come back tomorrow."
Once Tamara has healed him, Herm nods his thanks and looks over to Harrold and Amira for what they wish to do.
Herm Dunlaven |
"I am yes, as I said that was something very unexpected. We will have to be much more careful from here on out." I think we should leave and regroup for the night. Tomorrow we can come in knowing that this place is haunted and be a bit more prepared."
Herm will then move over towards Harrold and the door to leave.
GM Foxy |
Assuming Amira doesn't want to stay in the room with the haunt alone
The group carefully retreats the way they entered the Harrowstone and walks back the path to Ravengro.
Just as they want to part with Harrold in front of Kendra's house for the night they hear really loud knocking and turning around they notice a dark figure standing at the entrance smashing at the front door.
Herm Dunlaven |
Herm will draw his hammer, setting the butt on the ground.
"Can I help you good Ser? You are knocking and banging awful loudly and forcefully on that door. Might I offer you whatever assistance it is that you need?"
Herm will close to with in 25' of the person.
Tamara Hart |
"You are still a bit wounded, and I am too. Desna, please hear my prayer and heal our wounds." She holds her butterfly aloft as she prays. "Ok, let's come back tomorrow then. It'll be more pleasant to investigate in daylight."

Tamara follows after Herm, ready with her shield in case of trouble.
Amira Ravenheart |
Gm, you assume correct
Herm ,let me handle this. Last time i check you're still recovering. Amira opens the door to see who is banging at the door.
