I've sent off a missive to the Paizo Home Planet to ask about the levelling scaling for the AP and SFS stuff. It's a good pick-up, and one that likely needs to be ironed out before we shove off.

Unfortunately, given that the Paizo Home World is currently enjoying the GenCon Solar Eclipse, they might not get my message for a few days.

Stay with me (if you haven't already bailed), and I'll have an official answer soon.

In the meantime, you can register an SFS number for this first character, but re-assign it if we choose to fly in a different direction.

I've also heard substantiated rumours about a "Welcome to SFS" boon that you'd all be privy to if we do go into the SFS wormhole.

The wording is a little wonky but it says that if playing with a group going all the way through "GMs running the Adventure Path are not bound to the rules of the Starfinder Society Roleplaying Guild campaign when running the campaign," which may mean that we would just gain xp normally. I don't know though, asking is probably the best course of action.

Of note, I'm listening to a great deal of music for inspiration for my prep here, and looking forward to ways that I can incorporate it in our Gameplay once we've launched.


Not that it's necessarily the same but I've played, or GM'd, games for PFS on the boards where people get credit for PFS characters but have the game characters advance normally in the AP like Steelscales said.

I've noticed a few other "wait, what?" moments in the rulebooks so far so the first errata will be fun.

Ok....clarifications and such from on high...

We will still be going for SFS credit for this AP, and each player will have an SFS number. The way the system works for playing the AP through completely with a bunch of players is much more relaxed than standard Society play. That's how that statement about "GMs not being bound by standard blah blah blah..." is to be interpreted.

In other words, we will be playing the AP exactly as intended, and levelling exactly as intended by the AP. You will be getting chronicle sheets as if you ran the adventure using a pregenerated character for the ends of each chapter.

The upside to you? When this adventure ends, you will have a 12th level SFS character that can go on and play Seeker-tier SFS scenarios. I get GM credit. Win-win.

The downside? Um....the number you use for this character can't be used by any other character? Honestly, I don't see a downside. There's no need for us to run SFS scenarios in between chapters - we will be levelling as per the AP, not per SFS credit buys.

    Quick clarification, unless Starfinder differs. Usually each AP book gives 1 level worth of experience, so your SFS character will probably get to level 2-3 or so, and then will skip levels as you reach the minimum level for future games.

    Nope. We will level as per the AP. It'll bring you to level 4 by the end of Book 1.

    It's confusing, I know. Best to ignore the levelling description in the OP document on the Dead Suns AP completely with respect to levelling.

    EDIT: Oddly enough Dinketry, I was looking at the description of the books on the site and based on that it seems like you only gain two levels per book (as the second book's description for the adventure says "an adventure for 3rd level characters", the 3rd says 5th level, and so on); although I certainly haven't read the actual books, so that might not be factual.

    Background:
    While Telion never really excelled in school, and his choice in his development reflects that, he did manage to pass well enough to graduate. Once he had finished school, he actively pursued what he liked to call "aggressive biology research." For the most part, that looked an awful lot like hunting down whatever nasty creature made its way in from the jungles surrounding his home.

    Two years ago, Telion joined the crew of a kasatha research scientist named Devros Enga looking for some extra protection on his next expedition to some of the less charted sections of the diaspora, chasing rumors of a massive worm that could carve tunnels in debris. While they never did find the worm, the months they spent together, and the stories Devros told of his people, resonated with Telion. When the expedition came to a close, a much calmer Telion boarded a small single person shuttle heading back towards Castrovel.

    As fate would have it, Telion's shuttle never arrived at Castrovel. Shortly after his departure, a stray asteroid struck the rickety shuttle and disabled both its engine and communication systems. Telion drifted for a week in his disabled craft, and with dwindling air and power, his shuttle's navigation computer lit up. He was approaching Absalom station, but at his present course he would pass by the station and likely not even register on sensors due to his ship's low power state. Telion quickly sought out something he could use to give the ship the smallest nudge towards the station, but there was nothing useful. As he watched the station's indicator on his ship's computer grow closer, his antennae twitched. Something his kasatha companion had said in one of his stories, how some of his people could align themselves with the rhythms of the universe, the stars and the spaces between bubbled up in his memory. With nothing else to try, Telion sat in his messy cockpit, closed his eyes and felt... nothing. He was so used to reaching out to the minds of people near to him, he thought surely this was no different. As his desperation grew, he began to strip away any assumptions he had made, just reached and felt and then... something. A tug, not in his mind as he expected, but deep in his chest. The faintest pull, just off to his left. He opened his eyes, then quickly squinted as his eyes struggled to focus after looking into so bright a light. "Brilliant Telion, you've discovered the sun," he muttered to himself. But he had felt the sun's gravity. He closed his eyes again, and instead of reaching out, just allowed himself to float, alert, but free. Gradually, other tugs and pulls became noticeable, so faint compared to that of the sun before him. Finally, Absalom station was nearing its closest approach and he could feel the massive space station's pull. Tentatively, Telion reached for the invisible strand that connected him to the huge station and to his surprise, it thrummed and pulsed at his mind's touch. Emboldened, and desperate, Telion gathered his will, and yanked on that thread with all his power.

    Telion awoke two days later in one of Absalom Station's medbays with a bruised antenna and the worst headache he'd ever had. The nurse told him that he had been recovered from a derelict shuttle that had nearly crashed into the station after he had somehow slammed his head into the side of the cabin. A shirren scientist had been in to inspect him due to confusion on how headbutting a wall on a spacecraft from inside it could have had so radically changed its trajectory, but the medical staff had chased him away.

    That was four months ago. Rather than find a new way home to Castrovel, Telion decided to stay on Absalom Station for a while where he feels closer to the stars and explore his newfound connection to them.

    Background:
    Raia was born on the Lashunta homeworld of Castrovel. Through her early education, it was quickly found that she was extremely athletic and quick witted. She excelled at her studies and caught the attention of several Lashunta owned corporations who sponsored her in what was known as advanced education. What this education truly was, was operative training. Again, Raia excelled in her studies. She found she had an aptitude for disappearing in crowds and finding out information. If she was found, she was able to effortlessly dodge through crowds to an escape vehicle where her piloting skills would find her losing any and all pursuit.

    Raia enjoyed these trainings, finding them more of an entertaining game then work. However, she longed to see other worlds. She kept hearing in her studies about all of the locations they might be tasked to go and that they needed to be ready. So far she has only seen her own world. However, that was about to change. It was now time for Raia's final exam. She was being sent to Absalom Station. Raia didn't know what her mission was exactly. She was told by her superiors to watch, gather information, and that she would know when she needed to act. The vagueness of her orders didn't bother her, she was finally getting off world and to Absalom Station no less. As far as Raia was concerned, Absalom was the center of the universe. The place where all the cultures came together. It would be like visiting every civilized planet all at once. So now she sits on a passenger ship bound for Absalom, wondering what adventures her future holds.

    Appearance and Personality:

    Raia has a very lithe build. She stands at 5' 8" and weighs 160 lbs. She is very young at 19 years of age and is just getting out into the universe. She is considered very beautiful to others and has used that to her advantage. Her hair is jet black and shoulder length and her eyes are a soft shade of green. Personality wise, Raia is very vivacious and out going. She loves life and finding new things. She is a very competitive person. She has seen her previous changes more of a game than anything else and she enjoyed winning it.

    Cypher-6 is a lithe, androgynous android shell designed to be easily disguised as a variety of humanoid lifeforms. Designed for infiltration and information gathering the Cypher model is well up to the task. This particular shell was owned by Aspis Consortium, being recovered and recommissioned 6 times before it was able to break free of corporate control escaping its monitor. Now on the run Cypher-6 has done its best to blend in with the unwashed masses heading to Absolam Station.

    That is correct. Diaamante, we'll need you to reconfigure your stats. Also, there's no trade-off to get a stat lower than 10. In other words, you don't get any points back in SFS for making a stat lower than 10 to start. You can do so, but it is purely flavour.

    The SF core rulebook states that you can lower a stat below 10 to a minimum of 5 for no benefit.

    SFS does not allow this option.

    Recruitment ends in about 9hrs. No need to worry about stats mistakes for submissions - we can work through those if you're selected.

    You're all making it quite difficult. I've made an executive decision: I'm choosing 5 characters. It'll still be an excruciating challenge, but that does give me some laxity.

    Without Hero Lab to aid in putting together a clean character, I've thrown this fellow together.

    I was lucky enough to both have preordered, and I played the Quest Pack at GenCon, and I had quite a good time.

    Anyways, here is Jaxom Sandstrom, Human Technomancer (Xenoseeker). Born and raised on Absalom station.

    His Starfinder number is 55238-702. I have a Starfinder boon or two that I gained at GenCon that I would likely wish to apply to Jaxom here for playing through this AP.

    Jaxom could Pilot, or Engineer, or be the Science Officer. He'd not make a great Captain, no good social skills.

    Avatar choices are limited, but this guy looks kind of sciency.

    This was a massively difficult decision, so THANK YOU to everyone who sent in a submission. As I mentioned before, I was forced to expand my crew to five just to accomodate such well-thought and written characters. Still, as Asimov put it: "Never let your sense of morals prevent you from doing what is right." Or, as Adams put it: "I may not have gone where I intended to go, but I think I have ended up where I needed to be."

    These things being poorly-quoted, some of you will be rescued by the Heart of Gold, and the rest of you will be forced to listen to some more Vogon poetry.
