Orin, from the entrance observes, "The area is too cramped. I suggest no more than one at a time to preserve movement. That does open us up to surprise attack, though, which may have been the reasoning for this design."

Hearing the Elf's work, the Knight senses a trap he stands at the ready. "Look alive, look sharp, it's a trap. Call out if you see them. Don't be fooled by their illusion." And now we fight, he thinks to himself.

Silas, what did you say? We didn't even have a chance to capture him... We've lost the element of surprise, and now have to follow a snake into its den.

"I explained that we knew him and his statue to be a fraud, that our weapons, allies and spells greatly out-powered his own, and gave him one charitable last chance to flee. Though I suspect now there was nobody in the chamber to begin with."

Orin cocks his head and stares at the fake kobold.

Spellcraft: 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (18) + 9 = 27
He then motions Silas over and whispers, "Are you sure, Silas? The spells Silent Image and Minor Image could both duplicate what we have seen here, and both require one to concentrate on the image in question."

Orin's eyes narrow. "I think he is lying in wait. It is also possible he has fled, but he cannot have gotten far."


As the group allows itself to become distracted by the illusory kobold, a rush of real aggressors bursts forth to confront the party.

Ayerth sees the giant rat coming. Using his arcane gifts he throws his Curveblade and seeks shelter behind some of his armored companions so that he can cast unmolested.

Hand of the apprentice: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (17) + 7 = 24
1d10 ⇒ 3


Ayerth releases his concentration on the Detect Magic before he can isolate the strongest auras or possible caster location. He then tosses his sword into the air, the blade barely connecting with the closing rat. He attempts to retreat into the hallway for cover and protection, finding the passage partially blocked by both Irakli and Echo. He forces his way past them, 10' down the hallway, only too late realizing he has lost sight of the combatants on either side of the chieftain's lair.

Skeleton #2 lunges at Orin, Spear: 1d20 ⇒ 15, striking the flat footed dwarf for Spear damage: 1d6 - 1 ⇒ (4) - 1 = 3 hp. It is then that Orin notices the spear covered with the residue of a thin greenish patina. Poison Save: 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (3) + 9 = 12 Orin suddenly feels very tired, his eyelids starting to droop and sag. His mind races, trying to cut through the fog, green paste, dizziness, anesthetic effect, Knowledge Check: 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (14) + 1 = 15... Drow Poison?

Second Save after 10 rounds:
1d20 + 7 ⇒ (20) + 7 = 27 Orin wakes after one minute of unconsciousness.

The large rat that Ayerth struck scurries across the floor, attacking at Silas who faces the other skeleton and kobold on the larger side of the room. Bite: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (10) + 6 = 16, the bite failing to penetrate the elf's thick boot.

"This is... not good magic," Silas declares, and uses his held Cure spell on the skeleton that just took down Orin.

Silas opens himself up to AoO if he flees his current opponents.

Other skeleton, then.


Silas flashes positive energy over the closest skeleton as opponents surround him. The creatures brittle bones crack and snap, but seem to hold together through sheer evil intent alone.

Echo takes a defensive stand in the hallway behind Ser Brandon and Irakli.

The kobold guard calls out, in

Draconic:
He will curse me if I don't fight you.

as he stabs at Silas with his Spear: 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (13) + 1 = 14, missing the elf.

The thrust however does succeed in pushing Silas towards the skeleton he damaged, which attempts to rake over Silas with it's own Spear: 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (3) + 1 = 4, the elf easily ducking the blow.

The black raven fluttering around the room attempts to discourage the others from reaching the elf, snatching a flask from off a shelf and flinging/dropping it at Ser Brandon's square. Alchemist's Fire: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (3) + 7 = 10, the flask bursting into fire and smoke for Fire Damage: 1d6 ⇒ 6 to Ser Brandon and Irakli being splashed for 1 point of Fire damage. Ser Brandon is momentarily on fire, covered in a foul smelling burning goo.

Join us so that the soot scales may return to the old ways. A chief should Shepard and lead his people---not poison and kill them off until the tribe ceases to be a people."

"The Kobold is saying he has to attack us upon threat of the false chieftain. Please focus on the other. Threats first. I will try to turn him to our side."

Ser Brandon draws his sword and moves towards the other Kobold, bringing down the longsword with a practised slash upon the creature, though the small creature is able to nimbly dodge out of the way of the first attack.

Attack: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (2) + 8 = 10 for Damage: 1d6 + 4 - 1 ⇒ (2) + 4 - 1 = 5


Orin continues sleeping as Irakli, suspecting a trap, takes a Total Defense posture in the hallway, defending the Baron.

As he does so, he and Echo fail to notice the swarm of spiders crawling out of the rafters, dropping down all around them. They suddenly find themselves in the middle of a Spider Swarm encompassing the narrow hallway. The spiders immediately swarm over the men, doing stinging damage to each man.

Irakli:

Sting: 1d6 ⇒ 2
Distraction Save: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (20) + 4 = 24 successful
Poison Save: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (10) + 4 = 14 successful

Echo:

Sting: 1d6 ⇒ 3
Distraction Save: 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (4) + 1 = 5 failed - Echo is nauseated for one round
Poison Save: 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (10) + 1 = 11 successful
Creatures with the nauseated condition experience stomach distress. Nauseated creatures are unable to attack, cast spells, concentrate on spells, or do anything else requiring attention. The only action such a character can take is a single move action per turn.

The Diplomacy Skill is generally ineffective in combat and against creatures that intend to harm you or your allies in the immediate future. You would need to prove yourselves with actions, and Ser Brandon just showed the kobold what he needs to do to survive the fight, namely keep fighting.

From his currently safe cover position, Ayerth begins summoning a small fire elemental to scourge the spider swarm.

"I must interject that the things we are fighting might not even be real since, it appears, we are dealing with an illusionist."

In Draconic:
"Either side with us and your shaman, or share in the false one's fate. Why do you fight for one who curses his own?"


Illusion or not, the spiders continue swarming over the rogue and sorcerer in the hallway.

The Skeleton (#2) moves past Orin's prone form to a position flanking Ser Brandon opposite the kobold. It thrusts out with it's Spear: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (17) + 2 = 19, the hardened shaft nearly making it past the warrior's shield as he moves to face a pair of challengers.

The large rat uses the confusion Silas experience's facing multiple foes to flank the elf opposite the other spear wielding skeleton, lashing out with a Bite: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (1) + 8 = 9 but missing as the elf kicks wildly in the creature's direction.

Channeling the power and ideals of his goddess, Silas calls out a taunt against the shaman.

"These bone-men are nothing but shoddy workmanship!"

Channel Damage to Skeletons: 2d6 ⇒ (5, 6) = 11 (Will DC 11 for half)


Skeleton 1 Will Save: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (2) + 2 = 4 Fails, exploding into dust
Skeleton 2 Will Save: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (15) + 2 = 17 Succeeds, falls apart into broken bones

Silas' positive energy destroys both skeletons, clearing the field of nearly half the foes engaging him and his allies.

Ser Brandon struggles to strike at the enemies, holding them off but unable to find purchase.


Echo moves out of the immediate area of the swarm, retreating back down the hallway.

The kobold sees the skeletal warriors collapse at Silas' command, and for a moment it seems he might rally. He then makes a half-hearted stab at Silas with his Spear: 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (16) + 1 = 17, putting up a show but not coming near enough to pose a threat of hitting the elf.

The raven on the other hand snatches another flask from the shelf and hurls it at Ser Brandon, who takes another Fire Damage: 1d6 ⇒ 4 as he continues to burn from the foul smelling goo. The Second Flask: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (16) + 7 = 23 catches the warrior square in the back for Fire Damage: 1d6 ⇒ 1 while adding to the current goo burning over the man's form. Silas, the kobold, and the giant rat each take 1 point of splashing Fire Damage.

Then moves out from the swarm

Didn't know if could do this to raven or not since I was got by fire while hidden


Irakli's attack misses the Raven, which was aware of the elf and was not subject to sneak attack damage.

Odd/Even: 1d6 ⇒ 1 The swarm moves further down the hall, encompassing Ayerth in their mass. Echo moved just past Ayerth but is likewise engulfed in the mass, the creatures spreading in the narrow confines.

Ayerth:

Ayerth will need to make a Concentration Check to successfully cast the Summon Monster spell.

Ayerth grits his teeth through the stinging of the spiders as he struggles to bring the fire elemental forth.

"Yes . . . Just . . . Trying . . . To complete . . . The summoning!"

If he brings it forth, the fire elemental will address the swarm first. Then he will retreat back out of the swarm.

The small fiery being slammed into the swarming spiders setting the ablaze with supernatural heat.

If elemental is ended this round target will burn for 1d4 damage for 1d4 rounds: 1d4 ⇒ 1


Swarm Reflex Save: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (2) + 3 = 5 vs DC 11, the swarm takes 3 HP damage this round from the burning elemental.

The large rat focuses on Silas, realizing he seems to be commanding the others to action. It again attempts to Bite: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (7) + 6 = 13 the elf, though it cannot get a good enough grip on his leg to allow it's teeth to do more than scuff and mar the priest's leather boots.

Silas moves to wherever he can target the swarm and the most other enemies, provoking an AoO if he has to. (He'd like to target the swarm and, ideally, the familiar, but otherwise just where he can place a 15' cone to do the most damage)

Burning Hands (Reflex 14 half, swarm takes extra): 3d4 ⇒ (4, 4, 1) = 9

Is there a map for this? I don't have a good visual in my mind here. If I haven't already moved out of the swarm, that's what I want to do. If I have, I want to move to Orin and begin trying to wake him up with an open hand slap to the hand or arm (1 nonlethal?) (assuming I don't have to go through the swarm to do it).


Echo is out of the way of the swarm though unable to proceed past it to reach Orin. It is just as well as Silas moves to cover the hallway with a cone of burning fire. Swarm Reflex Save: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (4) + 3 = 7 The swarm crips, snaps and pops as the fire sweeps over the carpet of insects.

The kobold, deranged and afraid to be failing the chieftain, stabs at Silas while he is occupied with his spell, but stumbles as he moves towards him. Spear: 1d20 ⇒ 3.

The raven attempts to swoop in at Silas, claws snatching at him, Swiping: 1d20 + 11 ⇒ (8) + 11 = 19 his holy symbol of Brigh. The raven flutters overhead, holding the symbol, dangling the broken chain.

Ser Brandon screams in agony as his flesh burns. Ignoring the pain as he sees his companions under attack, he lunges towards the kobold striking at it.


Irakli misses against the raven, the bird taking flight and squawking at his attack.

Ser Brandon, blazing as the fire dies out upon his frame, Fire Damage: 1d6 ⇒ 6 runs the kobold through with his blade, the creature gurgling and slumping to the floor.

Another spider swarm comes crawling out of the walls from the northern set of framing, advancing into the room. The carpet of crawling insects moves towards the middle of the room, seeking to cut off Irakli, Ser Brandon and Shellsucker on one side, Echo and Orin on the other, with the Ayerth and Silas in the southern passageway.

The elemental continues to burn the ever surging swarm of insects.

Ayerth looks between the raven and the rat one had to be a familiar. He unleashes two glowing bolts of energy that streak towards the winged menace.

"Tag . . . You're it."

2d4 + 2 ⇒ (2, 2) + 2 = 6


I am assuming Ayerth ordered the fire elemental to move towards the other swarm and attack it, as the first swarm was destroyed by Silas.

Ayerth strikes the raven with two bolts of mystic energy, wounding the creature.

The dire rat strikes at Irakli while the rogue is distracted trying to target the flaying bird, Bite: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (8) + 6 = 14 but again the creature finds difficulty piercing the heroes defenses.

Fire damage: 1d6 + 1 ⇒ (1) + 1 = 2


Silas' strike falls short, catching a low support timber rather than the raven.

Echo takes a defensive stand, not sure how best to continue the fight, trying to locate the elusive chieftain.

Tickbiter the raven, sensing the impending turn of the fight, flees to the north, over the moving carpet of spiders, darting over the wooden frame and cloth panels into the space beyond. It may be there is a passageway beyond.

Irakli moves through the swarm of spiders to reach Orin. The elf takes Damage: 1d6 ⇒ 4 from the arachnids as they sting and stab at him, avoiding their poisonous venom Poison Save: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (13) + 4 = 17 but becoming Nauseated Distraction Save: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (3) + 4 = 7 due to the number of such wounds inflicted over the past few brushes with these creatures. He blindly stumbles out of the swarm, bumping into the wall near Orin and Echo, momentarily free of the crawling carpet of pain.

Creatures with the nauseated condition experience stomach distress. Nauseated creatures are unable to attack, cast spells, concentrate on spells, or do anything else requiring attention. The only action such a character can take is a single move action per turn.

Ser Brandon takes a defensive stand against the dire rat, his burned and raw skin aching from the alchemical residues charred over his body making attacking seem an agonizing prospect.

The swarm ignores Irakli and crew to it's left, Ser Brandon and the rat to it's right, surging instead forwards towards Ayerth and Silas, filling the mouth of the hallway with their tiny forms, cutting the pair off from their allies but not quite reaching either caster in their grasps.
