Not yet. They are in the box, in Pyotr's inventory. I put all the loot on a separate inventory line to avoid confusion.

Tonight's the last evening of the incorrigible nieces visit, and they are keeping me quite busy. I've got an early class in the morning, and a considerable stretch of prep work after that, so I'll update in the afternoon (probably in the middle of the night for you guys).

That also gives Bonegrit and Pyotr a chance to make their posts before I update.

I've got kind of a good news - bad news - good news thing going on this week.

The good news is that I'll be closing on my new home on Thursday!

The bad news is that I'll be in a flurry of packing and getting ready to move for the several days leading up to closing, and then the insanity and unpredictability of moving for the several days after closing.

The good news is that I've decided to the take my vacation starting Thursday, to help facilitate the move and getting settled in, etc. So, while there will be a lot to get done, there should also be a lot of freedom during downtimes when I can get a post up!

The bad news is that I have no idea exactly when my internet service will end at my current address or begin at my new address. While there's a possibility that there may be overlap, it's equally as likely there will be a gap...

TL;DR: I should be able to post daily, but expect some unpredictability and maybe a few occasions of short posts from my phone for the next week.

Congrats on your move! I just went through the same thing a couple of weeks ago whoch went pretty smoothly; my wife did a wonderful job.

I'm sure Pytor will be fine with some limited posting for next few days so make sure you take care of the important things.

Delkaneth, please check your PMs! :-)

kind of wish I hadn't.......

Congratulations to Pellius and Pyotr on all the moving. There'll also be some disruption on my part over the coming weeks I'm afraid.

This Saturday my wife and I are flying back to the U.K. for a four week holiday. Things will be fun, but quite busy as well as we travel about the country visiting friends and family. There'll also be some camping in the Lake District, some recording and a 'second' wedding celebration (my wife and I got married last year in Vietnam but most of the English folks have had no opportunity for a celebration).

Needless to say, maintaining a post-a-day might not possible over this period, particularly in the first couple of weeks when we'll be travelling, camping and getting married again. I'll do my best to keep things ticking over and give advance notice of anticipated silences.

Wife and I were going thru the kids' toys over the weekend and came across two foam axes my boys got from Disney/Epcot a few years ago.

Last night I got scolded for running around the house with one in each hand and randomly throwing them at stuff.

Love it! I'm disappointed to discover the plastic swords of my childhood are neither as big or as solid as I remembered them.

Regarding the PCs' current dressing down, from the DM perspective it seemed like Dierik's natural reaction. In some ways you might have got off lightly; Dierik's penchant for losing his temper has been mentioned several times but has yet to manifest fully in Gameplay thread. I've also kept in mind that Pellius aside, most of the PCs are still in their teens, so it seems natural that Dierik would talk down to them to some degree.

Looking at the wider picture, I realize there's something of a clash of gaming perspectives going on here. I want you guys to feel in control of the fates of your characters (and to explore the world about them), but I also want that world to feel real. Thus Dierik is only acting as I think he should; but as the DM I fully support sneaking off to explore keeps or whatever whims may take you. I guess being employees of a caravan isn't so conducive to 'sandbox' play. Remember, the caravan is a hook to get the campaign rolling. Whilst I've ideas galore (more than enough to get us to the Realm of the Mammoth Lords and then some) for exciting event tied to the caravan, I'm also behind the idea of the campaign being the PCs story. If you start to think being part of Dierik's caravan restricts your characters own ambitions and whims, as the DM I'm quite open to you striking out on your own.

I think the scolding is perfectly appropriate, and thinking back to how everyone reacted as we were setting out its something we expected. Feels very 'real'.......and like the real world, itll chastise us for a few days until something REALLY shiny appears on the horizon and we venture out again.

maybe we all need to invest in that stealth teamwork feat so we don't get caught next time?

I think the roleplaying went really well and it was sort of expected. We could have avoided some of the reprimand with a good diplomacy roll (and a gift) which we did not get.

It's clear that we need some more healing potion/wand so where can we get that from? We now have some 'money'...

Well, Zriorinta is a peddler in magical items, alhough her stock is small and peculiar, and she tends to be somewhat secretive regarding what she has available. In addition to her, the PCs will be shortly arriving at the Freedom Town, where they may also be able to procure some magic. Keep in mind though that the place is very much a backwater, so there might not be a wide selection. However one or the other should be able to provide the PCs with some healing magic.

How serendipitous! I closed on my new home yesterday. Today is moving day. I will likely be unavailable for about 24 hours, as well.

Have a safe trip!

Hey guys, now in the UK. Have made a start on a new gameplay post, but things are fun and busy here. Going to spend all of today on a bus to the Lake District, then be staying with some friends for a week and a half. I'm not sure if they have an internet connection; they're quite rustic! We'll also be doing a lot of camping, so basically saying I'll update when the opportunity presents itself, which could be today, tomorrow, or in several days!

Hahaha! I completely missed the line about Karranah riding up to Delkaneth!!! I thought they were both addressing Pyotr! He really did just blunder right into that conversation, didn't he?

Ah well... What's a blooming romance without a big, goofy guy who doesn't know when not to interrupt? Hmmm, not sure that's actually a trope that gets used by anyone...

In my original draft I think I wrote that Pellius wouldn't get the requisite rest to prep spells for the following day. Afterwards I figured I should be a bit more lenient and changed as above, but in today's post my memory only served me up my original intention. My bad there, Pellius did have time to prep his spell.

Under normal circumstances, I assume Pellius prepares his default spells regardless of whether it's stated or not.

The above being said, according to Pellius' character sheet, detect magic isn't on his default spell list anyway (prestidigitation, disrupt undead, acid splash and light are listed). Unless of course a default spell list was posted in the Discussion thread which I don't remember (which is perfectly plausible given my memory) :-)

No, you are right. Detect magic is NOT in his default list so he will have to wait until tomorrow. I just wanted to be on the same page with regards to spell preparation in general. We're good and Pyotr will have to wait until tomorrow.

Some super gameplay posts of late folks. Please keep 'em coming, but be advised I'll be out of action until at least Monday due to insane wedding celebration preparation. My dad swears I'm not going to rest for a minute up until the wedding bells have finished ringing.

Optional Homework:

Imagine your character lies on his deathbed in the company of one of the other PCs. This could be a few days hence, or many decades into the future when they are age old men.

The cause of death could be anything you desire. What do the PCs have to say to each other? How has their relationship developed over time? What recollections do they share?

Just for fun mind, and to be posted in the Discussion thread.

"It was.............fun..........."

Apologies guys for a rather bitty update. I was also intending to write an introduction to the Freedom Town, but I've run out of time for now. I'll also have to write up the helm of valour later. I'm recording some music with my old bandmates over the next three days, and it's unlikely I'll be able to make another post until Sunday.

Me again. Recording ran into Sunday. Great fun but very intensive. Highlights included two great drummers playing two drum kits simultaneously and making percussion tracks from banging farmyard machinery. Anyway, some family stuff to do now but hoping I can make a post later in the day.

Helm of Valorous Courage

Aura Moderate enchantment CL 7th
Slot head Price 6, 000 gp Weight 3 lbs

A conical open helm made from fine steel, with small cheekguards and a nasal to protect the face. The frontispiece is a sunburst worked from gold, the horizontal beams extended to rest over the brows of the wearer. Iomedae’s sword runs behind the sun, the stylised blade emerging to form the noseguard. Discs of engraved silver on each cheek depict fanciful lionesses rearing on their hind legs.

When worn by a paladin who follows Iomedae, the helm of valorous courage manifests its full power: the paladin’s aura of courage extends to all allies within 30 feet rather than the usual 10 feet area. Furthermore, once per day the paladin can bestow a valorous blessing to all allies within his aura of courage: a +1 divine bonus to attack rolls that lasts for 1 round per paladin level possessed.

Paladins that do not have access to the aura of courage ability and paladins who do not worship Iomedae can still benefit from the valorous blessing, but they alone receive the benefits.

Creatures of lawful good alignment who are not paladins gain +4 divine bonus to saves versus fear effects when wearing the helm of valorous courage. This power functions irrespective of the god the wearer worships.

Creatures of any other alignment receive no benefit from using the helm of valorous courage. Evil creatures experience a persistent and wearisome headache when wearing the helm, but this is no more than an annoyance without any implications on game mechanics.

Construction Requirements Craft Wondrous Item, bless, remove fear Cost 3, 000 gp

As with the homebrewed spell I created, the DM reserves the right to alter some of these mechanics should playtesting prove them to be unbalanced for some reason.

NPC Profile: Crinkles Cupporchin

Caravans have been Crinkles’ life since his birth. His father, the late Pierryn Cupporchin, was a renowned merchant captain who spent the good part of three decades leading his band of wagoneers and trailhands across Western Avistan in search of a good bargain to be made or swindle to be had. Crinkles was born on the road, in a gaily painted, pony-drawn, half-sized carriage which served as home for his parents and two older sisters.

The view out of the window was ever-changing, and Crinkles celebrated birthdays in Korvosa, Magnimar, Canorate, Riddleport, Vellumis, Kaer Maga and Caliphas, and numerous highways and byways in between. His father was larger than life (though in life he stood well short of three feet) to his only son, always gifting young Crinkles with extraordinary (and often magical) toys and helping him escape his mother’s stern hand to see strange sights both wondrous and disturbing to a child’s eyes. Pierryn’s lofty stature was not confined to Crinkles’ eyes, the roguish merchant had firm friends amongst communities of his race wherever they were chanced upon thanks to his dirt-cheap prices when selling to fellow halflings and his not-so-secret involvement in Bellflower Network smuggling of runaway slaves out of Cheliax.

It was Pierryn increasing embroilment in the emancipation of his halfling brothers and sisters that led to his eventual death at the hands of a hellknight inquisitor of the Order of the Chain. Crinkles heard his father’s whimpering death sighs just outside the thin walls of the family carriage whilst his mother and two sisters held him down and sobbed, refusing to let little Crinkles rush under the sword of Pierryn’s executioner. The hellknight decreed the rest of the family innocent of any crime and let the remaining Cupporchins live.

Although devastated by his father’s death, Crinkles was young, and full of typical halfling cheer, resilience and optimism. Inheriting Pierryn’s bravura and cherishing the last present his father gave him – a gorgeous rosewood violin – Crinkles grew into a wild but good-natured youth. He was gifted with his instrument, and soon won himself an apprenticeship with the Varisian master fiddler Massimo Zacopi. In Massimo’s company he continued to wander, but despite his mentor’s teachings his initial promise with the violin did not prosper, and they parted ways after only a year. Although Crinkles remains a talented player in the eyes of a layman, his skill has continued to stagnate.

Finding himself in Daggermark, playing for a few silver coins and struggling to make ends meet, Crinkles first crossed paths with Dierik Ironcoffer. Pierryn and Dierik had been acquaintances, but over their occasional meetings it had been the cooking of Pierryn’s wife that made the most impression on the Lastman. It was memories of this cuisine that prompted Dierik to hire Crinkles as his cook, and by the time it became clear that his new employee had inherited little of his mother’s skill and all of his father’s cheek Dierik had grown too fond of the halfling to send him on his way.

Although Crinkles might be an unimaginative cook, he’s proven an extremely resourceful quartermaster, Wherever Dierik’s caravan winds up, Crinkles seems able to come up with something edible, even if it’s not necessarily appetising. Crinkles firmly believes that a life on the road is not synonymous with discomfort, and goes to great lengths to ensure he’s dry, warm, well-fed and cozy. He sometimes despairs at the willingness of most of Dierik’s crew to ‘rough-it’.

The parallels between Dierik and Pierryn Cupporchin are easy to see, and it’s no surprise that Crinkles has come to venerate his new employer as a surrogate father, despite their similar ages. However, this is by no means a blinkered devotion; Crinkles is never afraid to voice his opinion and is also ready to take Dierik down a peg or two with a well-placed jibe. Despite his rather mundane position in the caravan, Crinkles’ adventurous spirit is undimmed, and the halfling cook is renowned for getting himself into surprising scrapes!

Crinkles likes to be well-informed, and has a hot ear for gossip, intrigue and scandal. His only obvious fault is his sensitivity; he’s quick to sulk if criticised, particularly when it comes to the subject of his mediocre cooking.

Getting on a plane back to the 'Nam tomorrow morning, so I'll likely be out of commission for c. 36 hours.

@ Pellius, your character sheet lists Pellius as having 72 gp. I'm a little confused because my spreadsheet records him as only having 26 gp. Where did the cash come from?

I'm wondering if you're including the box of 50 gold pieces found in the keep in that inventory? If I remember correctly, Pyotr took the box and the Pellius only a single coin.

Or does this total include the value of gems and art objects?
