Gerald stays in his armor for now, feeling comfortable upon his horse. He continues to glance around, keeping an eye out for anything in the area that could cause harm to the party, his eyes narrowing every once in awhile.

Sergent Jack thinks it over a while, but decides to continue wearing his armor. His father had warned him of the dangers of "getting too comfortable" in a potential battle area. Also, Jack had seen with his own eyes some of his buddies getting killed because they discarded armor it turned out they really needed later. Being miserable was in his opinion better than being dead.

Jack also looks out for potential problems.

The seven heroes, Chongo, a horse, and two mules continued on, apparently the only living things on the Old Road other than the stisti flies. As they did so, at their various rates of speed, a natural marching order began to form. It was the following: Ciaran, in bird form, scouting well in advance; Gerald, on horseback, following 2 miles back; Chongo following Gerald by 5 ft.; Dr. Iiwo, first out of his armor, following Chongo by 5 ft.; Kiley following Iiwo by 5 ft.; Sergent following 10 ft.; Rufus following Sergent by 5 ft.; and Xoc Xoc trailing Rufus by 10 ft., often springing forward to keep up on her short legs and booted feet. Everyone before Sergent was moving slower so the last three could keep up. If they slowed down even more, they could travel two, three, or even four abreast on the road instead of single file. Alternatively, those before Sergent could pull even further ahead, if they chose.

Ciaran saw, from his bird's eye view, flock after flock of birds moving above the trees. It was unnatural how active they were; constantly settling down, then flying off, then hovering about looking for another place to land - as if the trees did not feel right to them. And, always on the horizon, the line of black clouds ahead.

Occasionally, the heroes heard the calls from the flocks of jubjub and tooki birds overhead, but saw almost no other animals all day. Once, they saw a lone frog on the road. Another time, Sergent spotted some movement in the brush, but the source of it was not found. For a jungle, this solitude was most unnatural indeed.

The day passed without event, until the heroes came to supper time. Those who had them rested their sore legs, while everyone fell into discussing what to do about food. As it turned out, only Gerald, Kiley, Sergent, and Chongo had thought to bring rations, while the three of them and XocXoc had thought to bring water. There was feed for the horse and mules. They had enough rations to split between them to easily reach the ruins though, on the trip home, they would either have to rely on magically created food or hope for better hunting conditions than they had seen so far.

Feel free to correct me on that marching order too, if you like.

My plan was to rely on Survival checks to find food.
Survival:1d20 + 14 ⇒ (2) + 14 = 16
I can also cast Create Water for the party to refresh themselves.

The nature gives those who are one with it all they need. If it doesn't give enough one day, she will reward double tomorrow.

Casts create water periodically, offering drinks to others as needed. When camping I have both a huge pavilion tent and a campfire bead.

Jack is willing to share his food as needed.

As a side note I would think that using the Survival skill to find food would also cover finding edible plants as well as hunting. While animals might currently be scarce in these parts, I doubt the plants have moved much. One would think that in a jungle there should certainly be something edible somewhere. :-)

Male Human Alchemist (Internal Alchemist) 6

Doctor Iiwo will graciously accept any and all offers of food and water. "The jungle always provides," he adds. It's difficult to tell if this is sage wisdom or just a non-sequitur.

Though fauna had been scarce, the edible flora of the jungle was abundantly lush and everyone found enough to fill up on with hardly needing to touch the trail rations. Particularly abundant in this region of the jungle seemed to be cohree palm trees with their hard-shelled, sweet fruit.

After breaking for supper, there were still a few hours of sunlight available for travel that would be necessary to use, particularly after the slow start in the jungle before reaching the Old Road. Still, Gerald who has not detected any evil all day was wise in suggesting they begin planning night watches early. As night crept toward the them, the jungle on either side of the Old Road seemed to grow more sinister in appearance. Rufus continued to go slower than he had to just because he liked his current position in the marching order.

A few hours later, at the last of twilight's gleaming, the heroes had no choice but to press on in the dark or set up camp. They could camp right here on the open road though, thanks to Ciaran's aerial reconnaissance, they knew of several clearings large enough to accommodate them off the road.

Male Human Fighter / 6

Jack helps set up the tent, then gets his bedroll out. He says to the group, "Somebody get me up when its my turn on watch." Jack then goes on to demonstrate one of the most valuable traits a professional soldier or mercenary can have, the ability to sleep almost anywhere at almost anytime.

Yes, Jack is sleeping in his armor. :-)

I don't see any problem with camping on the road. It gives us a better view, and I don't think anyone else is using it.

"I will take the last watch, if there are no objections." Doctor Iiwo stretches his bony arms and yawns. I do so enjoy watching the sun rise."

With Gerald's help, Lord Rufus erected the pavilion he produced from his magical haversack. Anyone who wished to partake of his hospitality was allowed to sleep inside -- which was probably everyone, as the large tent provided some protection from the everpresent stisti flies.

Rufus patrolled frequently outside the pavilion, using four light spells in succession to illuminate the campsite. On many occasions he heard things moving through the jungle far away, but never saw anything. Indeed, his watch ended without any sort of incident to report to Sergent Jack.

Jack was halfway through his watch and patrolling outside the pavilion when he was surprised by Dr. Iiwo, who had woke up early to go relieve himself in the jungle. They had just begun talking when... Listen checks, please; just the two of you

"I was able to make my water upon a rare species of fern just now." He comments to Sergeant Jack. "Also, a rather persistent stisti fly found my nether regions of great interest. Fortunately, I was able to drive it away before it could feed upon my manhood. It is said that the stisti spreads the dreaded sleeping sickness - a malady that the Little Doctor does not fancy. There were times Jack wished he was less perceptive, like the very moment Iiwo painted too vivid a mental picture of a stisti fly buzzing around his manhood. Luckily, the picture was ended abruptly by the sounds of swift movement in the jungle nearby. Jack and Iiwo could judge that, based on the noise, up to six figures were about to come crashing through the brush on the righthand (east) side of the road and would emerge 10 ft. from where they were standing.

Behind them was the pavilion where everyone else was sleeping. The road was 25 ft. wide here, with thick jungle on either side.

Round 1

Lord Rufus woke up instinctively before even hearing Dr. Iiwo’s first shriek. He reached over for the crossbow and haversack lying right next to him and rose to his feet.

Before anyone else could react, the first of the monkeys broke through the brush. The first five monkeys all swarmed around Sergent Jack; three in front of him and one on each flank. They were the ugliest monkeys Jack had ever seen as well as the most ferocious. They lunged at him with claws and teeth barred and getting uncomfortably close. On his right flank, the closest monkey jumped on his arm and scratched its long fangs into the crook of Jack’s arm. Distracted on his right, the monkey on his left flank managed to bite the back of his knee. Jack is at 43 out of 51 hp

As Ciaran heard Dr. Iiwo's shrieks and Sergent Jack yell, he woke up, rose to his feet, and saw Dr. Iiwo race past him into the tent. Ciaran spoke the cant of the druids and, as if in response, his skin hardened and became cracked, like a tree bark. Just in time, too, as three monstrous monkeys came charging up to him. Though they jumped around him and shrieked menacingly, none of them of them touched his bark-like skin.

Gerald woke to the sound of shrieking and yelling, blinked, and rose to his feet. Moving through the tent entrance, he found himself standing next to Ciaran and three ugly monkeys dancing around him. A fourth monkey jumped in front of him and attacked. Gerald had time to unsheathe his scimitar first before taking the defensive. The monkey could not get within six inches of him, with that blade flashing between them.

Sergent Jack shook off the monkeys biting him and, after raising his war axe up high, brought it down on the monkey at his right flank. His heavy axe shattered the monkey’s sternum and split its chest open. It did not even have time to cry out in pain. Pulling his axe out, he swung it into the next closest monkey, burying his axe into its rib cage and killing it dead.

Dr. Iiwo ran into the tent, shrieking loudly enough to wake everyone. Running past everyone, he bent down and scooped up his alchemist's kit, quiver and bow from the spot where he wished he was still sleeping. The kit slung over his shoulder in an animal skin bag, while the quiver went over his other shoulder.

Lord Rufus emerged from the tent to find Ciaran, Gerald, and Jack being attacked by monkeys. He took aim with his crossbow, realizing that if he missed a monkey badly enough, he might hit one of his companions.

Kiley was the second to last to wake up to all the noise. She rose from the ground, slung her quiver of arrows over her shoulder as she stood, and then began stringing her bow.

Xoc Xoc woke up last from a sweet dream to find Xahara crouching over her in a protective stance. “What is it, girl?” she asked her ghostly companion.

Round 2

My apologies for missing this last round, but I forgot that Rufus' Light spells extinguished long before now and we never ascertained how Jack was seeing while on watch. I am going to assume he had a torch lit that is now laying on the road and try harder to remember lighting conditions next time.

The closest monkey to Lord Rufus was the one threatening Gerald. The first bane-enhanced bolt from his repeating crossbow just missed the monkey, but the second bolt passed clear through its skull and killed it.

Two of the monkeys swarming Jack managed to climb around his body, searching for gaps in his armor to find purchase for their fangs. The third, sitting on the ground, raked impotently at his greaves.

Ciaran knew that some diseases might make monkeys act this aggressively, but had yet to witness any other symptoms or signs of such a malady from them. Instead of watching longer, though, he chanted a prayer and Nature answered by enveloping the west side of the road and surrounding jungle with a concealing fog that Ciaran then stepped back into.

Gerald raised his sword, and hollered out, "Let the Light guide you all!" A nimbus of light erupted from the paladin, radiating the camp.

Jack shook off one of the monkeys from his back, twisted around, and brought his war axe down on it hard enough to cut off its arm and leave it dead. Then he shook off the other monkey and, before it hit the ground, chopped it in half.

Dr. Iiwo saw a sweet flanking set-up with Jack on the east side of the road, but between him and Jack were the three monkeys that had just lost sight of Ciaran and saw him as a good target instead. Swinging his club wildly, he engaged the monkeys and delivered a glancing blow to one of them. The monkeys responded by swarming over Iiwo, one of them delivering a nasty bite with its fangs as the other two distracted him. 35 out of 41 hp

Kiley rushed out of the tent with her bow ready. The monkeys swarming Dr. Iiwo were nearest. There were no monkeys not in melee to target, so she had to pause and make a decision about whether to use her bow or not.

Xoc Xoc, right behind her, also paused, as if to consider which comrade-in-arms needed her help more.

Kiley can still act this round, once she's chosen a target, but everyone else's intentions are for round 3.

I had thought that we still had light around the tent. Given that there was no light around the tent, Jack would have been using his Ioun Torch.

That's probably one dead monkey. Jack will then move adjacent to Dr. Iiwo so as to try to flank the monkeys that are attacking him. That is, of course, if Jack can see anything through the fog that sprang up.

Now that I think of it, I should probably roll to see if the monkey I thought I killed benefited from any concealment.

1d100 ⇒ 77

Dead monkey confirmed. But I need the GM to tell me what I can see clearly enough to try to react to.

Keeping Bane active (free to maintain) and adding "Justice" judgement as a swift action for another plus two to attack (total of +4 with bane). Still using rapid shot, this will be bolt 3 and 4 of 5 (I will only be able to fire once or I will need to reload next round).

Damage 1d10 + 2d6 + 3 ⇒ (2) + (6, 6) + 3 = 17

Damage 1d10 + 2d6 + 3 ⇒ (4) + (4, 4) + 3 = 15

Another +1 if I'm within 30 feet. If it takes out one with the first shot, second shot on a second monkey.

Doctor Iiwo has an Ioun Torch.

Surrounded by monkeys, Doctor Iiwo falls into a slight trance, concentrating on his breathing and centering his internal energies.

Spontaneous Healing (Ex) - 15 HP/day, free action once per round, he can heal 5 hit points as if he had the fast healing ability.

Ignoring the flailing of his feral enemies, he removes a few components from his darkwood alchemy kit, mixing them swiftly in a small clay pot and tossing it lightly just over the shoulder of one of the monkeys. It fizzes and explodes with a satisfying blast of flames.

This is a standard action that draws attacks of opportunity. Targeting the grid intersection right behind and between two of the monkeys. They should both take 6 HP splash damage if I hit the right grid (AC 5), reflex save for half.

Kiley was only 5 ft. from the monkeys on Dr. Iiwo when she emerged from the pavilion, so she took a 5-ft. step back, took careful aim, and clipped a monkey with her first arrow. She killed the same monkey with her second shot, piercing it through the heart.

Round 3

Rufus, likewise, had no trouble picking off Dr. Iiwo's monkeys. The two remaining practically exploded when they were hit by his magicked crossbow bolts.

Only one monkey remained and it, with no fear for its own safety, kept attacking Jack -- or, rather, his Ioun "torch". While it lept up and batted at the floating stone that appeared to be on fire, it made an easy target. While Ciaran and Gerald watched, Jack cut it down in mid-jump and hacked it dead.

The battle was over and the heroes had been victorious over the monkeys. The jungle was silent again.

Jack says: "Well, I could use a little bit of healing. As to what happened, the monkeys just attacked. It might have had something to do with Dr. Iiwo waving a banana like object at the jungle, or maybe not."

Jack pulls a rag out of one of his pockets and wipes down his axe with it.

Ciaran steps out of the fog, his face morbid.
"Can't you see? They're butchered. Slaughtered. They are no more. They have ceased to be. Bereft of life, they rest in peace. I can sleep easy knowing that I did not defile my hands with their blood."
To Sergeant Jack's comment, he remarks with deadly seriousness:
"The monkeys can be attracted by unusual smells, but those are more likely to provoke assertive dominant behaviour, rather than outright aggression."
Meeting the inevitable judging stares from the party, Ciaran produces a magic wand tucked away behind his belt.
Rather than harm nature, I choose to mend it.

"I dunno, most of the animals I've seen tend ta run when threatened. I've run inta 'nuff alley-cats ta know that much."
Kiley looks thoughtful for a moment, and says her next words with a deliberate calmness that has nothing to do with her problems with pronouncing words.
"I don't like this. Animals run when somethin's not right. I got a feelin' that somethin's very, very wrong with that mist. More like a disease than a mist, or even a fire."

Male Human Fighter / 6

Jack replies to Ciarin, "Thank you for the healing. But surely you must realize that those animals are dead because it was either them or me. Not even you stood around offering up your body to the monkeys as food or a sacrifice for their ire or whatever. For all practical purposes you ran away and hid. Not all of us can do that. Some of us are responsible for protecting the other members of the party who are more vulnerable to such attacks. I don't know where you got your moral compass, or even if you have one that functions, but in general cowardice and inaction are not virtues that most people would applaud. Depending on the circumstances they might not even be viable options."

Ciarin may not be the most useful person in a scrum with aggressive apes, but it often takes a native to understand native species, as it were. Ciarin do you have any idea why the primates would be so aggressive and what we can do to better secure our position for the rest of the evening?"

Male Human Alchemist (Internal Alchemist) 6

Left standing in the center of a pile of dead monkeys, Doctor Iiwo frowns and pours his concoction out on the ground, where it fizzes for another few moments before losing all activity. Disappointment is clear on his face.

"No explosion for Doctor Iiwo today. A pity. But such are the exigencies of life." The wound he took slowly heals up before your eyes.

He adds, "But you see, the jungle provided, as I predicted earlier." He crouches down by one of the monkeys. "There should be enough bush meat here for a few days. The brains are a particular delicacy." He pulls a knife from his loincloth, and unless stopped, he begins to sever the heads from the bodies to allow the blood to drain properly. He whistles a merry tune as he works, only stopping to giggle to himself. "A banana. How inappropriate to speak to an elder so."

Male Human Fighter / 6

Jack chuckles as he comments, "Well, it most certainly was not a watermelon like object."

Male English/Swedish Publisher/1, Writer/4

Despite the jocularity of some of the heroes, the true weight of the situation was best summed up by Kiley's initial question, "Wot's with 'em?" For, when the monkeys were examined by Dr. Iiwo, they were found to not be freshly killed at all, despite the freshness of their wounds, but seemed to have been dead for several days. Ciaran too examined them and found their features twisted in a most unnatural, ghoulish manner. Almost, indeed, as if they had been transformed into some type of animal-ghoul. Dr. Iiwo now had to think twice about if he still wanted to eat their brains.

Everyone also had to think twice about the hour and their own wakefulness, for their first night out on this expedition was still only halfway over and Jack had more watch time ahead of him. Jack and Iiwo are both completely healed

Male Human Paladin(Warrior of the Holy Light) 6

Seeing the trouble at rest, for now, He sheaths his sword, tho the light he radiates takes awhile to fade. He grimaces as he looks at the monkeys, seeing thier state. "More work of the approaching evil. It even perverts the wildlife." He looks at the Druid. I think know at your duty to put any further wildlife like these to their eternal rest. It must be done, and the source stopped. He takes another look around the camp with detect evil up, and if he finds nothing, he heads back to sleep.

For the first time, Ciaran looks genuinely unsettled.
Indeed. My calling binds me to giving the creatures of nature the benefit of doubt when dealing with hostile situations, but these ones were not natural at all. Should we encounter more, I won't hold back.
