Just in case a re-roll is allowed

re-roll and questions for DM:

2d10 ⇒ (4, 10) = 14
2d10 ⇒ (10, 1) = 11

So skills will be:

Cooking - 15
Urban Survival (not sure if such a skill exsists, but I wanted my character to be well versed in Big Cities and how to get around in them.) - 13

And for a trait I would like something to do with sniping, as she was trained by a corporation in assassination and espionage.

@Reckless: Good idea for what kind of rifle you've got in general and what it looks like, but I was more looking for a fictional model name like a couple of other people have provided...

@Daniel Stewart: I'd say no on the skill rerolls, as those 6s do at least become 9s, which still means you're proficient in the skill. Especially for something like Cooking, you'd only need to roll in order to make a particularly fancy dish, something very special--just having the skill means that you know how to cook at least fairly well. And it can be interesting to have a character who knows how to do something but isn't particularly great at it.

@YanJieming: Looks good so far, that's all I'd really need to start with. Like I said, I'd fully expect and love to see characters build and grow during the game, so no worries on getting more up until you have time.

I'd like to be apart of this but I've yet to find the time to contribute with a background or any setting material, which is probably a pretty good indicator that I don't have the spare time right now to devote to another PbP game. So I'll withdraw my interest. I hope you have a successful game and I look forward to lurking the game thread :)

Liberty's Edge

Well I was hoping to make her a fairly good cook, as a cover for her other , more nefarious skills. And what about a urban survival skill...is that possible? And sorry for all the questions, but is there a skill that would be good for a professional sniper to take....if not, I might mover her skills around with a different idea in mind!!!

Going to withdraw submission. Thanks and good gaming everyone.

When are you planning on starting.

Aah! People are disappearing on me now :/

Well, if you feel that you don't have the time to contribute or have otherwise decided against joining the game, that's perfectly alright. I hope that you all have good gaming wherever you find it, and if you decide later on that you'd like to be part of this campaign, feel free to jump into whatever recruitment thread is up at that point--maybe this one, maybe a new one, whatever works!

@Daniel Stewart: An Urban Survival skill would be acceptable, yes, and would work as a skill that lets you find safe and quick paths through urban environments, find a place to stay for the night, and make contact with people you need to in a city. Other than that, a sniper may desire some skill in Communications to keep in contact with other units, as they're often on their own.

@Billybrainpan (and in general): I've been fairly busy with work the past few days, but coming up is a brief vacation period where I'll have additional time to post. I'm hoping to get together Discussion and Gameplay later this week, probably on Wednesday or Thursday at least for Discussion, and then getting into the actual campaign by the weekend. By this point I will have updated the wiki with all the info from recruitment and be ready to get the show on the road. As a thought for you all, though, think about why your character would be on a Frontier space station. Looking for work, hiring on with a new ship, killing time before their next assignment? The station in question will have varied services as well, from restaurants and bars (saloons?) to entertainment to a bazaar, so perhaps think about where your character would like to start the game. You'll be brought together or go your separate ways as you desire, although hopefully at least a few folks will band together.

Liberty's Edge

I did not see a computer skill...I assume that there should be one...can we add it (I was thinking my character should have some skill at hacking and such)
Also is their an advanced hand to hand skill other than brawling? I was thinking of reducing her rifle skill (as it seems someone else is looking at being a sniper) and giving her better hand to hand skills, and maybe knife.

thanks

Liberty's Edge

I'm not disappearing, Blanc! I'm still heeeeeeeeeeeeere cried the dust speck

Good to see you Snorb! I didn't mean that everyone seemed to be leaving, just noticed two folks who had good characters drawing out.

Daniel Stewart: Egad, how did I miss a computer skill?

Computers: This skill covers use of higher-end computer knowledge, generally dealing with software (although combining this skill with Engineering ensures your character understands computer hardware as well). Anyone with a decent amount of learning and experience can perform basic tasks on computers, even though they can be somewhat rare on the frontier; this skill is used for hacking, decrypting/encrypting data, finding hidden information on the 'Net, and so on.

As for a hand-to-hand skill, Brawling covers all manner of unarmed combat. Whether a Brawling 2 represents a rough-and-tumble bar trawler who knows how to throw a few punches, a former star on the wrestling circuits, or a skilled martial artist, is all up to you and how you detail your character's fighting style in the game.

Liberty's Edge

ok...sounds good..I will have character sheet up soon, and background right after that!!

Liberty's Edge

Ok...here is the character sheet for my submission...will be working on background later today.

Looks good, although Dextrous Fighter only applies to Blades or Brawling attacks, not both, so you'll have to choose one. I'd say Brawling, especially since the trait probably reflects martial arts training of some kind. And you only get one set of skill-based tools to start since you took Weapon Skills, which is a reminder I'll have to double-check all characters on in a moment here.

Liberty's Edge

Ok..will correct as well as maybe removing knife and placing all 4 points in brawling...also here is her background.

Background:

Reesa was the daughter of a typical corporate family from the Core Worlds. Her family worked for the Atlas Corporation, one of the largest mega corporations in the Core. Atlas has its hands in almost any business you can think of, but is best known for mining, starship design, electronics and pharmaceuticals.
Like most families working for the corporation, the Hollingheads' were considered "owned" by Atlas, through contracts and obligations. While many would balk at this 'slavery', for millions in the Core, it is the way of life, and a good one too. Corp-families are cared for from'cradle to grave' and never need to fear of starving, being homeless or loosing their jobs. As an asset of the megacorp, they are treated well, and their families are cared for and educated better than most 'free' people.
It was during her early entry exams from the Corporation that Reesa was chosen for 'special' training. Instead of learning the skills of her parents, she was trained as a 'field operative'. A very prestigious position, it amounted to being a spy and killer for the company.
Reesa did quite well, but the company had not removed all her humanity and when ordered to 'liquidate' a middle manager, his wife and their 5 children, she hesitated. Her backup was forced to complete the mission, and she was sent for 're-education', which included forcing her compliance by torturing her parents. Her father did not survive the ordeal.
Reesa quickly came back under the corporation's control, or so they thought. In reality her mother had begged her to flee the Core Worlds and start a new life in the Rim. In a letter, she told Reesa not to worry about her, as she would soon 'be beyond the corporation's reach'. Knowing her mother meant to kill herself, Reesa fled the Core and hid far from the reach of Atlas...or so she hopes.
For the last 3 years, Reesa has been supporting herself as best she can; hiring out as a kick-artist to local gangs, but keeping away from 'wetwork' as much as possible. Her last 'contract' did not go very well, and she soon found herself on a broken-down frontier space station looking for a new gig.

Hey Brian, any idea on when you'll get this up and running? I'm really itching to play.

Sorry that I've fallen behind on things--I thought I'd have more time this week than I did, and I've been attending a regional assembly the past couple days (also with less free time to post than I expected). Right now I'm stopped on the way back home, posting from a public wi-fi spot, but I'll try and get at least Discussion open tonight.

Did we get the discussion open and I missed it?

If we did then I missed it too!

As did I.

Sorry everyone, my life became very busy over the last few days--work, a summer course, and personal affairs came to a head together and kept me unable to work on this. Fortunately things have calmed down a little, so I'll try and get stuff ready. Look for Discussion tomorrow or Tuesday, and we'll probably get into actual gameplay sometime next week (I have family visiting for the 4th of July, so I don't plan on having time to get things rolling before they head back home).

Again, my apologies for how slowly this is coming along, and my thanks to those of you who are still interested and excited to play!

Whats the party size at this point? I dont see any official player selections. I had looked at this when you originally opened the recruitment, but got sidetracked and just assumed it was too late. Come back and see there may still be a shot. Is there?

Definitely--this is essentially an open recruitment, stretching on into eternity, so anyone and everyone who would like to play can jump in to do so at any point. After the initial start, new players will get a choice of whether they want to "immediately" hook up with the group--joining in when possible, taking control of an NPC, or so forth--or just appear in the Frontier somewhere to go off on their own adventures. In fact even the starting folks don't necessarily have to join together--I'm more than happy to do spoilers or even run multiple threads if need be.

So, in short, yes! Feel free to make up a character at any time.

Also, for those interested, these are the players/characters I'm seeing finished and ready to go...
Billybrainpan--Oliver "Ox" Crowley
Daniel Stewart--Reesa Hollingshead
JDPhipps--Nathan Thrawn
Kelarith--Rax Galia
Reckless--Mirna "Mia" Santiago Currently dropped
Snorb--Keisuke "Kei" Nagato
Volkner--Dinh "Dizzy" Solomon
YanJieming--Gregor Cargill
If you think you're ready to go and not on this list, don't take it as me saying there's something wrong, take it as me being a bit frazzled and not reading things quite right.

That said, there's currently seven worthy submissions, seven fine folks who are ready to ship out and explore the Frontier and all it has to offer. We could keep everyone together if you like, although it might get a little crazy at times, or we can split the group with spoilers or threads. We'll discuss all that in the Discussion thread (along with some other game-start stuff). And Deliverance, I'd love to see you get a character together to join up!

Well id definitely prefer two 4 man parties personally. 7+ tends to get severely unwieldy from my experience.

I imagine it'd be easier to split the party up somewhat, and once we get into Discussion and Gameplay we can talk about how we want to do that and what likely splitting will be done. But for now, it's easier to just say we've got seven (potentially more) players.

Roger. Is there any time-frame for when I should have something to present?

I could go either way on splitting up but I also think that seven is a good number for a ships crew, and that idea is incredibly attractive to me.

Seven is an excellent size for a crew, and I'd propose we stick together, at least somewhat.

I'd like to throw my name in to the hat.

Bio:

Name: Kane o'Hare
Age: 28
Planet of Birth: Corvair

Service Record
Kane o'Hare enlisted in the United Planets Protection Force (UPPF), a military organisation dedicated to the protection of a collection of border planets known as the United Planets League, at 16 years of age.

The UPPF trained Kane in the use of automatic weapons, but he never showed much talent for the longer weapons, his skill naturally coming to shine in the use of his sidearm. Kane was a bright boy and the UPPF knew how to utilize its assets correctly so, after his initial nine months of Basic, Kane was shipped off to a Medical Facility, where he began his training as a Military Medical Officer.

Eight years passed and Kane passed out of the Medical Training Facility as a trained Ships Surgeon, with the rank of Lieutenant, within the UPPF. He received a posting on the UPFS Glory, a Mars class Battleship, as a relief Surgeon.

He spent four years serving on the UPFS before being dishonorably discharged for reasons that were never fully disclosed.

Background
At first Kane believed in the cause they were being sold, protection of the planets, keeping the minerals and ores mined in the UPL, within the UPL, for the benefit of the planets. This changed over time however as the true function of the UPL became more obvious to him. The league was little more than a bunch of Merchants dedicated to growing fat and happy off of the work of the common man, who never saw much profit.

Kane began to shirk his duties, patching up the enlisted men perfectly but giving the Commissioned Officers less and less of his time. By this point Kane was the acting Surgeon on the Battleship and his disdain became well known.

His conduct, mixed with an on world incident where he took a swing at a higher up, earned Kane his dishonorable discharge. They would have set him on a one way trip to a cell, had he not managed to flee the planet they were docked on, Belorin V, with the aid of a smuggler, the Captain of the Bonnie Marie, an Orion Class transport vessel, Xander Thrane.

Captain Thrane took Kane on as his ships doctor, on his run to the frontier and they parted on good terms, Kane even managing to save one of the Captains crew, during a shoot out on a crappy little room. Kane earned the mans respect and they parted on good terms.

Kane awaits the arrival of a new opportunity, waiting to join up with a new crew and offer his expertise to a new group.

I hope the things I mentioned in his bio are okay. I didnt want to throw in too much info in to it.

I'm down for it all. Space Opera here we come!

So Gray wasn't done? I thought he was.

I could go either way (Sorry not much help there!) I would not go more than 7 for 1 game...so maybe split into two groups and if interest lessens over the coming months, the remaining players could meet up?

You could also put them as two groups on the same ship, with an NPC captain, who assigns them different jobs/missions. Could even switch people back and forth, make it seem more like a large crew.

Wow mdt, that is a pretty fantastic idea!

Actually, mdt, that is at least partly what I'm thinking. After all, while most folks are decent with guns--putting a high roll in Coordination is mighty tempting, isn't it?--it's more likely that only some of you would go planetside when there's trouble brewing. And there's always trouble brewing. That's the way of the Frontier.

@Deliverance: I'm really hoping to get Discussion and Gameplay up next week after the 4th passes here in the U.S., as I've got family visiting and I'm going to be busy with that and work. That said, you can easily join in shortly after we begin, as we'll be starting on a space station rather than a ship, with the characters figuring out what they'll do and what ship they'll board. Assuming you all pick the same one, which admittedly will be likely (a little railroading at the beginning of a campaign never hurt anybody, right?), I'll keep it with one Gameplay thread and move forward, but things can easily get split up as necessary, especially once certain events come to pass...

@DarkestHeart: Kane looks good! The more info you throw in the better, really, so don't worry about that. I will ask if you're okay with making the UPL, and by extension the UPPF, a subset of one of the larger factions already created, sort of like NATO within the U.N., to oversimplify things for analogy's sake. I also like some of the ship class names you're offering, and I'll probably springboard off of those to make more. Now we have at least two ship manufacturers with different class names!

@mdt: Yeah, sorry, Gray is also ready to go. I knew I must have missed somebody.

Thanks Loup. About the UPL, that sounds great yeah. I could see them acting on their own, outside of the greater faction, setting themselves up as wealthy land owners and Merchants and exploiting their quadrant while the bigger faction is busy elsewhere. Sounds good.

Yeah--I imagine they'd be technically a subset of a larger faction, but they'd probably also end up working as a sort of megacorporation with their own jurisdiction and power--thus the UPPF. As long as they keep up their output of resources and goods, they'd remain more or less unbothered by the larger government.

You'll notice Gray put his in Observation, not Coordination (although yes, his Coordination is high, it's not his highest stat). :)

Liberty's Edge

so is this game still happening?? Just wondering

I hope so

I'm a friend of Loup from college. He's still planning to run this, but from what I understand his work schedule has been pretty hectic lately. I'm sure it'll get started soon.

Still here and waiting :D

As well you should be! This is a quick post before I go to work, but my busy schedule has died down some lately. My summer course is coming to an end, the play I'm in is happening this weekend, and I'm finishing work for the summer only a couple weeks after that. So I'll have plenty more time in the coming days, which means I'd definitely like to get this happening. For right now, can I get a roll call of everyone who's still here and interested?

Damn it Loup I'm a Doctor not a coward, of course I'm in!

Liberty's Edge

I'm in it as well!

Ready and waiting

Yo. Still here.

Me too!!

I'm here.

This is the profile for Kane.
