Cairenn nearly falls descending the rope but he catches himself.
No progress down the shaft this round.
Hobgoblin speak is faintly heard in the chamber beyond the narrow passage where the fleeing hobgoblin was felled by Erich's knife.
One particular phrase sounds like an important order, but only Erich makes it out.
Erich can attempt a DC 10 untrained linguistics check to repeat the phrase to Cairenn for interpretation.
DC -10 hear the sound of battle
Cairenn: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (1) + 7 = 8
Erich: 1d20 + 11 ⇒ (13) + 11 = 24
Kara: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (13) + 5 = 18
Lueck: 1d20 + 14 ⇒ (18) + 14 = 32
Lyrasael: 1d20 + 13 ⇒ (10) + 13 = 23
Cairenn Bell
Sorry to be super nitpickey here, it's just that Cai's ego would find it humiliating beyond belief if he tumbled 20 feet to the ground because he can't climb down a rope that other people were apparently climbing down effortlessly. :P
Cairenn Bell
Gracias! No worries, happens to all of us. He should be halfway down, I think, because he only used a single move action. But he'll get down in Round 3, if we're still in combat rounds.
Erich Kaine
Round 3:
Erich glances back. Looks like they've finished off the hobgoblins back there. But I've got no idea if there's more coming or not. I hope I stopped that runner in time, but... He mentally shrugs. I should assume the worst.
Erich steps forward lightly, drawing one of his two remaining daggers as he does so. He slips into the corner near the narrow passage the hobgoblin had been trying to flee down. Here's hoping they didn't spot me, he thinks, waiting by the passageway entrance with a dagger in each hand.
Move action: moving 20' feet forward into the corner by the narrow passageway (I adjusted Kaine's position on the map). Drawing as weapon as part of the move (benefit of having at least +1 BAB). Standard action: Stealth Stealth: 1d20 + 9 - 2 ⇒ (15) + 9 - 2 = 22.
Erich might possibly get an attack of opportunity if any hobgoblins come past him. If so, here's an attack roll: Dagger Melee (+Inspire): 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (1) + 8 = 9 Dagger Damage (+Inspire): 1d4 + 2 ⇒ (2) + 2 = 4 Potential Sneak Attack: 1d8 ⇒ 3
Lueck
"Cairenn! 'Karristhhha commikica booorith!' The hobgoblin said something like that. What does it mean?!?"
Linguistics 1d20 + 0 ⇒ (9) + 0 = 9 Failed untrained linguistics, so it is certainly gibberish that Lueck relays.
Round 3
Relieved at the arrive of the rest of the team, Lueck quickly stows his dagger and retrieves his bow, carefully advancing as he does so. He slides around the corner into the next room where he can provide cover fire for his friends.
Move to sheath dagger, move action to move and ready bow.
Kára Nightingale
Round 3
With a burst of speed Kára makes her way into the next room chasing after the others. She positions herself in front of the hallway and readies her attack.
Burn 1 use of Predator's Grace +10ft movement and Low-light Vision for 1 Round. 1 Readied attack and up to 3 AoO Attacks.
Readied Action, Power Attack and Inspire: 1d20 + 4 + 1 - 1 ⇒ (19) + 4 + 1 - 1 = 23
Damage: 1d10 + 7 ⇒ (3) + 7 = 10
Cairenn Bell
Round 3
Cai slithers the rest of the way down the rope and scrambles after the others to keep an eye on what's going on. He can't turn it into an epic ballad if he can't see it, after all.
(Well, technically he can, but it's nice to be at least fleetingly acquainted with the actual facts.)
He continues to sing, even if he's a little out of breath from the scramble down the rope. The bow is one more unslung from his shoulder.
"--so Death did Alsain's wager take
"And asked her riddles three;
"The first concerned a waveless wake
"For sailors dead at sea..."
Move action to finish descending the rope, move action to go to current location, drawing weapon.
Lyrasael Sylrune
With her target neatly dispatched, Lyrasael jogs after her little brother into the next room, pointing her weapon down the narrow hallway with an arched eyebrow. Whatever it was that waited there for them... well, frankly, she had no idea what it was. Something strange, and no doubt dangerous. However, the hobgoblins lined up behind it... perhaps she could get a decent shot off on them.
Longbow vs. Hobbo behind the... Thing: 1d20 + 5 + 1 ⇒ (8) + 5 + 1 = 14 I suspect it will gain cover, so subtract four if that's the case.
Damage: 1d8 + 1 ⇒ (1) + 1 = 2
Or perhaps not. Ruan swoops down and lands on her shoulder, inadvertently distracting the shot. Lyr gives her hawk companion a withering stare, and he shrinks back into himself, guilty.
DM Grimmy
Round 3 - Hobgobo's:
Rickety wheels creak and a hiss of building steam echoes into the chamber as the goblinoids roll a strange cannon into the passageway.
Pow!!
Cairenn:
Fish Cannon: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (16) + 2 = 18 vs Touch AC
A stinking rotten flounder smashes into Cairenn and explodes!
DC 12 Fort or Nauseated.
Erich Kaine
Round 4:
Erich bites his tongue to keep from laughing as the fish slaps into Cairenn. Ha! Those idiot hobgoblins...they've angered a necromancer. Fools.
He takes a brief moment to check his inventory. I've tossed two of my daggers, so I've still got one on my belt, plus the two I'm holding.
I could lean around the corner and toss another dagger, but that would give away my position. We need to lure them out of their hole somehow...but of course the others will have realized that too.
Erich holds his position by the door, trying to convey to the others through his gestures that he's ready to strike out if the hobgoblins come through the narrow passageway.
Readying a standard action to attack if any hobgoblin enters the chamber (passing Erich's position). Dagger Melee +Inspire: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (14) + 8 = 22 Dagger Damage +Inspire: 1d4 + 2 ⇒ (1) + 2 = 3 Sneak Attack Damage: 1d8 ⇒ 1
Lueck
Round 4
Lueck slides a little to get a better line of sight down the passage, and then let's loose with an arrow.
To hit 1d20 + 7 + 1 ⇒ (1) + 7 + 1 = 9
Damage 1d8 + 2 + 1 ⇒ (4) + 2 + 1 = 7
Distracted by the hobgoblins bizarre tactic, Lueck's shot goes wide, and the arrow skitters harmlessly down the passage.
Cairenn Bell
Suddenly glad I took Great Fort...
fort: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (5) + 4 = 9
...not that it helped.
Cai's magnificently inspiring music cuts off in the most undignified way possible as a rotting fish hits him in the face. The smack of decaying fish is enough to make him start retching immediately. This... this...
....this is not going in his epic ballad. Ohgods.
(Mechanically speaking, it's a free action to continue bardic performance, and doesn't technically require you to be able to 'sing', buuuuuut there's no way I can justify that from an RP standpoint. It's hard to be inspiring when you're puking. So, /bardic performance. You'll all do fine without it, I'm sure!
Wiping desperately at his face to try and clear off the slimy guts, Cai stumbles forward to the shelter of the nearest wall. He spits like a teakettle, because his mouth had been open when the fish hit, alright? You don't know what this tastes like.
Hahahaha, well played, GM, well played. How long am I nauseated for?
Kára Nightingale
Round 4
Ignoring the rotten stench as best as she can manage Kára outstretches her hand and begins chanting in a heavenly voice. Celestial A magical light begins to mold around her.
Begin casting Summon Monster I (Augmented Celestial Eagle)
Lyrasael Sylrune
Round 4
Erich might be trying to hold back the laughter, but Lyrasael is having none of that. She almost doubles over with laughter as the filthy rotten fish slams into Cairenn with a sickening splat, tears coming to her eyes at the comedic scene. "Oh god.. hahahaha... these hobbos... haha.. hahahhaa..."
Attack: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (7) + 5 = 12
She's laughing so much that she can barely manage to string an arrow to her bowstring, and the resultant misfire hits the wall harmlessly. Still chortling, Lyr follows after Cai, a wicked grin creeping across her face.
"Hahaha... pheeew! You'll never get that stench outta your clothes, man! Hahah!" She seems to be enjoying this quite a lot.
Erich Kaine
Round 5:
"Where are they getting these fish from?", Erich wonders aloud, glancing toward his teammates. "I mean, is there a lake anywhere near here?" He shrugs, then leans around the corner and hurls a dagger at the hobgoblin manning the cannon.
Oh, so they're not going to come out of that hall? Fine, we've got better ranged support than they do, fish or no fish!
Dagger Throw: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (12) + 7 = 19 Dagger Damage: 1d4 + 1 ⇒ (2) + 1 = 3
Standard action to attack, move action to draw another dagger (his last one carried, so now he has one in each hand and that's it).
Kára Nightingale
You pick one of your corners and all of your opponents to determine cover. He could pick the same corner if he was in either square.
Kára's Summon appears and immediately begins smiting the enemy.
Talon: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (1) + 3 = 4
Talon: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (9) + 3 = 12
Bite: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (15) + 3 = 18
Damage: 1d4 + 2 + 1 ⇒ (4) + 2 + 1 = 7
Could Create Water somehow disrupt the cannon?
Cairenn Bell
Round 5
"This--" --retch--
"--isn't--" --hwurgh!
"--funny--" --spit!
"--Lyr!"
Cai manages to spit out enough of the fish taste in order to speak clearly.
"They're about to fire 'muck arrows'," he warns with a minimum of gagging interrupting his words.
As there is little else he feels well enough to do right this second, he gestures his 'ghost' closer to the hogboblins, spreading a little more light on the subject.
Lueck
Round 5
Narrowly dodging the fishy projectile, Lueck prepares to target the next hobgoblin that mans the weapon. He advances, with bow up and aiming down the length of an arrow.
It looks like the one that was manning it is down. So...
Move to current position on map, and ready an action to fire on next hobgoblin he sees.
To hit 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (15) + 8 = 23
Damage 1d8 + 3 ⇒ (2) + 3 = 5
Kára Nightingale
Round 5 Part 2
Taking advantage of the unmanned cannon Kára moves into the hall using the smelly launcher as a shield. She forces fresh water into the device hoping to disable it's functionality.
Move and cast Create Water
Lyrasael Sylrune
Sorry for the hold-up! I was out all yesterday with a presentation/group project and then when I got home I fell asleep for like 12 hours...
Unable to see any more of the hobgoblins from her current position (what with Kara in the way and all), Lyr steps away from her poor, darling brother and up alongside Lueck. Arrow notched in her bowstring, she waits to see if any of the hobgoblins step up with a bow to fire these 'muck arrows'...
Ready Attack: 1d20 + 5 - 4 ⇒ (7) + 5 - 4 = 8 With the soft cover from Kara included... not that it matters ;)
Kára Nightingale
Kára also has her Halo up so everyone should be good for light I think.
DM Grimmy
Round 5 - Hobgobosquad:
Four hobgoblins decide they don't like the glowing bird.
Longsword: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (8) + 4 = 12
Damage: 1d8 + 2 ⇒ (3) + 2 = 5
Longsword: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (8) + 4 = 12
Damage: 1d8 + 2 ⇒ (4) + 2 = 6
Longsword+Flanking: 1d20 + 4 + 2 ⇒ (6) + 4 + 2 = 12
Damage: 1d8 + 2 ⇒ (8) + 2 = 10
Longsword+Flanking: 1d20 + 4 + 2 ⇒ (20) + 4 + 2 = 26
Damage: 1d8 + 2 ⇒ (5) + 2 = 7
Confirm: 1d20 + 4 + 2 ⇒ (5) + 4 + 2 = 11
Damage: 1d8 + 2 ⇒ (3) + 2 = 5
A pair of archers train their sights on Kara and Lueck, attempting the difficult shot past the fish cannon and the combatants.
Longbow: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (5) + 3 = 8
Longbow: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (7) + 3 = 10
The arrows trail smoke, and continue to billow smoke when they strike the back wall.
Erich Kaine
Round 6:
Kaine glances down the hallway and swallows nervously. "Oh. Man, that's a lot of hobgoblins. Does anybody else think that's a lot of hobgoblins?" He glances back at the others and notices the billowing smoke cloud. "Oh, and that's just icing on the cake. If those arrows get too close to us, guys, we're going to lose all visibility."
What am I going to do now? Trying to squeeze into that room is suicide, but hiding here in my corner is pretty much useless. And even if I wanted to throw my last daggers, I've got no clear line of sight.
Erich is going to hold his position for now, delaying his position in the initiative order until after Lyrasael. He'll wait to see what his allies do before acting, though he'll be willing to listen to any plans the others may suggest.
Cairenn Bell
Round 6
One last, emphatic spit, and Cairenn gets the worst of the taste out of his mouth. He relocates to a better wall to hug, and hunts for another inspiring verse, although this time, he has vengeance on the mind.
"Of course there's a lot of them. Vermin breed prodigiously," he says shortly.
"Thirteen little hobbos, hiding in the ground
"Too scared to come fight half their number!
"Thirteen little hobbos, their courage so renowned
"They cower at the slightest sound of thunder!"
Resuming performance. +1 hit, +1 damage...
As for how they're going to get in there-- Cai doesn't know himself yet, but he prepares to take a shot with his bow.
Lyrasael Sylrune
Lyrasael curses lightly under her breath in Elven as the full extent of the hobgoblin numbers becomes apparent, particularly when combined with the smoke particles hitting the far wall behind them. "We can't hit them where they are... and it's a death trap to line up one-by-one here! Can we force them to come to us? Get out of the line of the cannon, maybe?"
I feel like it's pointless to keep making pot shots through Kara and the cannon. And going in one by one is suicide... heh. We're at a bit of a stalemate.
Lyrasael Sylrune
Round 6
Lyr simply waits for an opportunity to fire.
Essentially on delay for now - we need to back up and encourage them to come to us through the chokehold, standing in the way of their fire is pointless.
Kára Nightingale
Round Six
Kára retreats from the hallway and disappears around the wall.
"Anyone have an idea? Charging into a meat grinder doesn't really suit my tastes." The angelic woman asks.
Erich Kaine
Round 6, Delayed:
Erich shakes his head. "I don't know if holding our position here is going to do any good. After all, they don't need to hit us with those muck arrows--they can just shoot at the ground here, and that'll smoke us out."
"Maybe our archers could hold their fire until the hobgoblins are about to shoot--you know, interrupt them before they get an arrow off."
"And you know, none of us really get a chance to look around before things got crazy. Maybe there's something in here that might help us turn the tide. I'd love to get my hands on some of those arrows and give them a taste of their own medicine." Ignoring the hobgoblins for a moment, Erich scans the room, glancing at the far wall, the ceiling, and the corners.
Erich will use his action this round to look around the room they're in and see if there might be anything of use. He'll also try to remember if the hobgoblins they killed in the well were wearing quivers or anything similar. Here's a perception check if you need it (obviously not doing a hard search of the room, being in combat and all, but just looking around, seeing if anything catches his eye). Perception: 1d20 + 11 ⇒ (8) + 11 = 19 We'll call that Erich's standard action for the turn, and if he sees anything useful, he'll take his move action to get closer to it (as close as 30' of movement will allow).
DM Grimmy
The chamber is as featureless as can be. Just bare flagstone. Each of the three fallen hobgoblins on this side have quivers of normal arrows. The muck arrows against the back wall are still streaming a fair amount of smoke, and Lueck has just dropped one of the muck arrow shooters just past the eagle and the fish cannon.
Lueck
Round 6
Lueck nods at Erich's observations.
"I will keep taking down any I can see; perhaps the other archers? Do we want to retreat, and draw them out into the room?"
Lueck steps forward again. Rapid shot, deadly aim. He targets any straight in line with him.

Round 6 - Hobogobs
The hobgoblins grow inpatient!
Responding to orders from their leader who is still out of sight around the corner, they file into the narrow passage wheeling the defunct fish cannon before them. The front two wield swords and duck low, while three in line behind them fire a volley of arrows at Lueck.
Lueck: AC 20
