Dungeon Master S |
Ushyle sees nothing through the portcullis, and joins Whistle Pig near the chest.
Nothing makes any noise or stands out down the Eastern hallway either.
Dungeon Master S |
Whistle Pig finds that the chest is rigged. The decrepit looking metal bands on the edges are a cleverly disguised animal trap. Touching the chest will cause it to snap shut on the wrists of whoever opens it...
Whoever set it knew what they were doing.
Whistle Pig |
As Whistle Pig inspects the chest he lets our a low whistle.
"psst, Ushlye, take a look at this. Notice the bands? Yeah, that's what I thought. You may want to step back..." He talks to himself absentmindedly. Without waiting for a response, he pulls out his tools and gets to work bypassing the trap and opening the chest.

Dungeon Master S |
Whistle Pig sets to trying to disable the trap and
SNAP!
ATK: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (13) + 3 = 16 for DMG: 1d4 ⇒ 3
Despite falling victim to it, the party each earns XP: 67
The wound could be worse, but if nothing else, the party now knows, whoever has been using this place knows his way around traps...
Whistle Pig |
WP recoils from the pain and curses to himself. "I should have rotated counterclockwise after all" He looks at Ushyle,"On the positive side, the traps taken care of."
WP goes and opens the chest.
Dungeon Master S |
Inside the chest is an odd array of things:
- A flask with an ounce of some kind of highly viscous amber fluid
- A pair of flasks, each containing something that smells like Acetone
- 50' of silk rope
- A Disguise Kit (6 uses remaining.)
- A set of thieves' tools
- A noble's outfit (you've seen one of these for sale before. It's the OUTRAGEOUS asking price of 150 Gp that you recall.)
- A signet ring worth about 50 Gp
- 237 Gp
- 155 Sp
- 55 Cp
Vael Oakfist |
Vael, always interested in mysteries, utters a quick chant and asks to examine the flask with the amber fluid.
Cast Detect Magic and try to identify the flask's contents.
Spellcraft: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (4) + 5 = 9
If the halfling lets him, he'll also stuff the valuables into his pack for later sale and coin distribution.
Dungeon Master S |
Vael casts a simple orison and sees that the amber fluid is magical, and strong magic at that. He can't identify it though. The pungent vials also faintly radiate magic...
Whistle Pig |

WP's eye widen. He hasn't seen so much coin in one place since his owner sold his best friend. He looks over the rest of the contents. He beacons Raen over and hand the flasks to her. "what do you make of these?" He turns his attention to the clothes"These would look out of place around here, don't you think?
Doxon Greyforge |
What's engraved on the signet ring? Does anyone recognize the symbols/initials/etc?
Dungeon Master S |
It's a fake. It misuses Chelaxian customs. It's supposed to LOOK like proper heraldry though.
Vael Oakfist |
Vael will look to Raen. "Any idea what's in those vials? Ye've more a nose for it than I."
To the group he says, "It looks like some knave has been usin' this as a hideout and has stored items here. I wonder who might be disguisin' themselves."
And to Hamilton's question he adds, "Nae I. Never heard of any nobles around these parts."
Dungeon Master S |
While Raen examines the magical items, Hamilton continues his bold push through the Plague house...
And sets off another trap!
Hamilton steps on a pressure plate that releases tension on a trio of interlocked bear traps. They snap down on Hamilton and two more down the hall!
ATL: 1d20 + 10 ⇒ (17) + 10 = 27 for DMG: 2d6 + 3 ⇒ (5, 5) + 3 = 13 The trap comes crashing down on snares Hamilton's neck!!!!
Dungeon Master S |
For surviving the string of bear traps, despite your methodology, each party member receives 100 XP
Vael Oakfist |
Vael rushes forward and tries to extricate Hamilton from the bear trap. Once free, he'll lay a hand on the man. "Spirits, tend ta this poor soul..." his voice trails off into a quiet chant, his eyes go a solid black, and positive energy flows from Vael to his human friend.

Ham doesn't get far--the traps come crashing down. At the last second, his arms snap up and get between the jaws and his tender neck. Hamilton's forearms audibly break with a SNAP and he drops to the floor. His breath quickens as he strains his muscles trying to push the trap apart. His arms, neck and back are scratched to the nine hells, but he is somehow conscious and alive.
GODS! HELP!

Vael comes and helps Ham push the trap's jaws apart. Ham's eyes are watering from the pain. Swift with his spell, Vael's healing magic flows through his broken limbs. Ham calls out as the bones knit, but the healing light is quick to sooth.
Thank ye, Vael. Lady of Valor, that hurt! But nothing permanent thanks to you!
Raen Varkath |
Raen gradually stops running, the images burning through her mind. It can't be. I saw him! He didn't survive that. Or else the Judge got to him. She turns back, half-hoping and half-determined that what she saw wasn't what she saw. The sharper-eyed among the others note a bead of sweat that trickles down her face. Or perhaps it is a tear.
Re-entering behind everyone else while Hamilton opens the trap door, Raen is last to follow Whistle Pig down the ladder. She looks hesitantly around at the other halls on this floor, then at the stairs.
She descends into the gloom just in time to hear *SNAP*. She is glad no one saw her flinch. I saw him! He's dead! She shakes the thought from her mind and looks to see what the chest holds.
"Ooh!" She brightens, glad to be doing something useful. "I help Agrit out with identifying some salvaged items sometimes. Let's have a look!"

@DM: Raen has the Appraise skill maxed. Let me know if I should roll it for anything we've found so far. Sadly I have not taken Nobility yet. I will though.
As she's tinkering with the fluids, trying to see with more than her two eyes, she comments quietly to Whistle Pig. "Do you think you could reset one of those bear traps? In a different place this time?"
Dungeon Master S |
The amber fluid is an ounce of Sovereign Glue. You're sure the other two are the same thing, even though you're not sure until after you've examined the second one, but each is a single dose of Universal Solvent. If Appraise comes up I'll typically do it off screen.
WP knows that setting a trap is a lot easier, for this kind of trap anyway.
Raen Varkath |
Raen holds up the amber fluid. "This precious liquid is worth more than its weight in gold: sovereign glue. The substance will render any two things permanently stuck together. The other two are its opposite, universal solvent, which will undo these effects."
@GM: sounds good. Raen's Appraise is currently +9.
Whistle Pig |
Whistle giggles at what the flasks are. "Oh the things I could do with these when we get back to town!"
WP quickly changes gears and head over to check the traps the nearly did Ham in. "I think I could reset these traps. Where would you want them?
Whistle Pig |
Pig is pretty sure we have made enough noise to let anyone know we are here, but old habits die hard. He quietly moves down the hall and peaks around the northern corner.
"I'll be right back"

Dungeon Master S |
Whistle Pig deftly moves down the hall. He spies neither trap nor surprise as he makes his way forward. Eventually his reconnoitering brings him to a closed door.
Map updated.
Doxon Greyforge |
Not hearing any further commotion, Doxon follows after WP and takes station at the intersection to make sure nothing comes up from behind to bother the halfling.
Dungeon Master S |
Doxon also takes up a defensive position, seeing a bit further down the hall...
Raen Varkath |
"Oh, I don't know. Maybe at the bottom of the ladder?" Raen replies (to WP's question) with a wink. She stays close to Dixon as they move on.
Dungeon Master S |
With the all clear, Whistle Pig opens the door.
This once-grand flagstone hall is filled with statues of different celestial creatures in every corner. An old fire pit in the center of the room is bordered on all sides by moth-eaten bedrolls, while shovels, picks, and other digging equipment lie strewn about a shallow tunnel bored into the northeastern wall. The ceiling above the tunnel has collapsed, leaving a hole open to the sky above a pile of burnt rubble.
Hamilton Renaud |
-How old is the fire pit?
-When do I think this room was last used?
Survival:1d20 + 5 ⇒ (3) + 5 = 8
Any indications or clues about the people who were here?
Whistle Pig |
"Why would someone be digging down here?"
WP does a quick check for traps in the room

if clear, WP wants to see how old the fire is

Dungeon Master S |
Hamilton moves to look at the fire pit when Whistle Pig catches movement in the rubble. Before the ranger can get a good look, Whistle Pig shouts to the party.
A pair of see through rats emerge from the rubble. Whistle Pig's shout prevents them from surprising you, but they are truly scary, even if they are no larger than a normal rat. They become solid as they approach, but there's something very wrong about them.
Though not powerful, these are RARE undead rats known as shadow rats. Shadow rats can be disease ridden when corporeal, and can sap your strength if they bite you when they're incorporeal. Ask any question for every 5 over the DC.

Raen Varkath |
Raen has seen a lot of things in her years. A translucent rat is not one of them. "Get away from those unnatural things!" Her mind racing, she decides to try a trick she's never played in earnest before.
Grease, DC 17 Reflex. Can't move on my phone, but I'll advance next to Hamilton. Grease centered between the rats on the back half.
Dungeon Master S |
Will update officially tonight, but in case it's obvious... Black: 1d20 ⇒ 1 White: 1d20 ⇒ 2
They DEFINITELY fail.
Will take their turns tonight.

Vael Oakfist |
Hearing Whistle Pig's request, Vael moves into the room. "I think a bit of stardust shou' help."
He then gestures at one of the shadowy rats (black). Stardust materializes around the creature, revealing it and causing it to glow like a candle. The motes of stardust twinkle like clear night sky.
"I'll git tha other one next!"
Rat (black) should no longer have concealment, and takes a -1 to attack rolls and Perception checks. This'll last just one round.
Dungeon Master S |
Whistle pig nails a rat with a bullet from his sling, despite the shadowy camouflage. Vael's stardust not only illuminates the other rat, it causes the rat to freak out a bit, as if the light were anathema to it!

The supernatural occurrence has thwarted his concentration, however, and his weapon strikes only the air. With a silent curse, he five foots to the side, in an effort to allow his companions into the fray.
