Dasiji Lekaya |
Dasiji chuckles at the good-natured ribbing. "I was just, ah, loosening it for him -- or anyone else whose bane isn't stuck doors. Why not make yourself useful and give it a try yourself?" Dasiji winks at the self-deprecating rogue.
Zedril "The Vengeful" |
Now that it has been softened, I will give it a try.
Strength check: 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (14) + 1 = 15
Perception check to look into the room when/if the door opens.
1d20 + 4 ⇒ (14) + 4 = 18
GM Brute Squad |
The Door crumbles beneath the weight of the elf. This large room looks like it was once a scribing chamber. The remains of many desks are scattered about, and amid the rubble is a number of long-dried inkwells, other writing utensils, and scraps of paper. These things are covered with black mold and patches of light green mushrooms.
Amid a particularly thick patch of fungus in the southeast sits a pale and crusty froglike humanoid. It trembles and twitches as it stands.
Zedril "The Vengeful" |
Addressing the "froganoid";
Grettings, we mean you no harm, perhaps you can help us. I am Zedril and my companions and I are looking for a few things that have been lost in these rooms. As soon as we find them, we will stop causing such a disruption here.
GM Brute Squad |
The frog-man seems uninterested in your plea for peace as it lurches forward with its wide, toothy mouth hanging open.
Round 1
Initiative:
Dasiji 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (14) + 3 = 17
Kehl 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (18) + 3 = 21
Irijaya 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (12) + 1 = 13
Quintus 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (20) + 2 = 22
Zedril 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (1) + 4 = 5
Froganoid 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (18) + 2 = 20
Quintus and Kehl!
GM Brute Squad |
Quintus Delays
The Froganoid cries out form the Acid burns as it moves forward, its eyes start to glow, all on their own. Suddenly blinding light flashes out from them, becoming painful to look at. Thankfully, Quintus and Irijaya are out of the way in the hallway.
Fort Save:
Dasiji: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (8) + 4 = 12
Kehl: 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (5) + 1 = 6
Zedril: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (6) + 2 = 8
Dasiji, Kehl, and Zedril are Blinded!
The Froganoid Attacks Kehl: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (5) + 5 = 10, but is still working out some of his kinks.
Everyone Else!
Zedril "The Vengeful" |
I'll post my action here just so you don't have to wait for me when my initiative comes up.
Initiative-5
Round-1
Zedril surprised by the creatures offensive reaction. draws his curved blade and swings toward the monster.
Attack: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (14) + 5 = 19
Miss Chance: 1d100 ⇒ 60
Damage: 1d10 + 1 ⇒ (1) + 1 = 2
I think I did the miss chance correctly, Brute, feel free to rule on the % roll, It's a 50% miss chance, I just don't know if it is 1-50 or 51-100.
Dasiji Lekaya |
FWIW, for any other x% roll -- like the 20% miss chance for partial concealment -- it's easier to interpret it as taking effect on "anything up to x" than on "anything above 100 - x". It just happens that 50% is the one where it's the same either way.
"Aaaugh! My eyes!" Scared and angry at not being able to see, Dasiji strikes out in the general direction of where he thinks the froganoid is, from what he can hear combined with where he saw it last.
Standard attack w/greatsword: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (14) + 3 = 17
...for 2d6 + 3 ⇒ (1, 1) + 3 = 5 damage.
Miss chance: 1d100 ⇒ 80
Irijaya Suchitra |
Oh, goody, a blindheim. I used these once...
Irijaya, wisely, had kept her crossbow ready. She takes aim against the frog-thing and fires.
1d20 + 1 ⇒ (20) + 1 = 21 for a crit - attempt to confirm
1d20 + 1 ⇒ (17) + 1 = 18 So assuming that confirms...
2d8 ⇒ (7, 4) = 11
Suck it, froggy.
GM Brute Squad |
Dasiji, I agree with the roll thing.
Irijaya, if you are stepping into the room/doorway to make the shot, that means you are stepping into the light.
Fort Save: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (9) + 2 = 11, and you are now Blinded!
Miss Chance: 1d100 ⇒ 49, Well, it would have been a good shot...
Quintus Valorian |
Sorry for the lack of posts... didn't get much chance to check over the weekend.
Quintus, seeing the effects of the creature's eyes, realizes he probably wouldn't be of much help in combat. He pulls out his wand of cure light wounds and stands near the door, ready to use it on any who need healing.
"If you get hurt, come outside the room and I can help!"
Ready an action to use the wand on anyone who gets close to me who needs healing.
Kehl "Trembles" Farren |
Kehl goes into something ofa literal blind panic. Feeling the heat of the alchemist's fire close, and still quite blind, he lurches away from the frog thing and back where he hopes he came from.
MA: Kehl moves directly away from the frog thing until he hits a wall or a person or dies or something.
GM Brute Squad |
Kehl's AoO Claw Attack: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (12) + 5 = 17, Kehl takes 1d3 + 1 ⇒ (3) + 1 = 4 damage.
The creature goes after Dasiji, because he hurt the most!
Bite Attack: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (11) + 5 = 16
Claw Attack: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (3) + 5 = 8
Claw Attack: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (16) + 5 = 21
Dasiji takes 1d4 + 1d3 + 2 ⇒ (4) + (2) + 2 = 8 damage!
Dasiji and Zedril!
Zedril "The Vengeful" |
Zedril, calmly addresses Irijaya; Thank you my dear.
Zedril feeling the clarity of Irijaya gift swings confidently at the froganoid;
Attack: 1d20 + 5 + 20 ⇒ (5) + 5 + 20 = 30
Damage: 1d10 + 1 ⇒ (9) + 1 = 10
Dasiji Lekaya |
BTW, I was looking at Dasiji's inventory for options, and noticed that his favored enemy is monstrous humanoids. FWIW. No idea if it applies.
Dasiji rapidly considers all of his options, but most seem too risky as blind and injured as he is, with an enemy so close. Nope, pretty much all he can do is swing his sword and hope for the best. "I could use some healing here!" The frustrated ranger attacks the brightness, and nearly loses his grip from the force of his blow against empty air.
Standard attack w/greatsword: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (1) + 3 = 4
Miss chance: 1d100 ⇒ 42
Zedril "The Vengeful" |
Nope, does no apply here.
Zedril, Guidance is not True Strike.
HA! I read her translation and saw "true aim" and thought it was true strike, my bad...I missed horribly then.
Zedril "The Vengeful" |
Holy Hell that hurt! 1hp left
Dasiji Lekaya |
I can't find any safe way to step back or withdraw while blind, and a single blow could drop Dasiji. Nothing to do for it but keep on going!
"It's taking all I have to defend myself against something I can't see! Maybe if you put a sack over your head -- or over its?"
Afraid to give his unseen assailant an opening, Dasiji lashes out once more with his very large sword, to no effect.
Standard attack w/greatsword: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (16) + 3 = 19
Miss chance: 1d100 ⇒ 22
AC 14, hp 4/12, blinded
Irijaya Suchitra |
OK, guys, we are officially DOIN THIS RONG. I am going to attempt to remedy some stuffs. Please see post in Discussion.
Irijaya, blind, but not helpless, is becoming acutely aware of the terrible state of her allies. If something isn't done soon, she realizes, all may be lost.
Quintus, wely ic relnel! Fel vaccuy lelel zuo yu vusel yu zuo, act I vaccuy xelelq yrellel qeluqhel ahijel uc sz ufc!
Irijaya lays her hands on Dasiji and chants a new incantation.
Pz yrel hiwry ub Irori, pel relahelt!
Casting Cure Light on the Ranger. No additional rolls needed since it's by touch and he's not resisting so 1d8 + 1 ⇒ (4) + 1 = 5 and you can haz 5 HP. 3/4 1st Level Spells per Day remain.
Kehl "Trembles" Farren |
Kehl stumbles his way out into the hallway. Or tries to I guess its up to the GM as he's blind
"Is everyone still alive? Is it dead?" He rubs at his eyes, desperately trying to restore his vision.
Assuming he is back in the hallway, Kehl fumbles in his pack for another Alchemist's Fire standard action
Zedril "The Vengeful" |
I was waiting for my initiative
Zedril with all of his remaining will, swipes at the frog with a broad attack.
Attack: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (20) + 5 = 25
Miss chance: 1d100 ⇒ 81
Damage: 1d10 + 1 ⇒ (10) + 1 = 11
Zedril "The Vengeful" |
Oooh critical
confirm: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (14) + 5 = 19
Damage = 11x2=22
Zedril "The Vengeful" |
Oooh critical
[dice=confirm]1d20+5Damage = 11x2=22
Actually the multiplier is just weapon damage right? (not strength mod)
So 21 damage, correct?Quintus Valorian |
As someone steps out of the room Quintus realizes that it's Kehl and that he's uninjured before using the wand. (Rules about readying say I 'may' take the action, so assuming that I don't have to...) "What are you doing?! You're not hurt! Gah... out of my way!"
After hearing Dasiji call out, Quintus realizes that it might be difficult to escape from a creature one can't see. He takes a quick look where the ranger is in the room before closing his eyes and shoving past Kehl. "If I walk out of this disfigured in any way, you're paying for my hat of disguise!" Quintus moves to where Dasiji was standing before activating his wand to heal him.
Cure light wounds 1d8 + 1 ⇒ (6) + 1 = 7
Dasiji Lekaya |
Some troubles with quibbles (and thankfully not tribbles)...
Quintus: Kehl actually took 4 damage from backing away (post after the one linked). On the other hand, I have no trouble imagining that Quintus was just being dismissive. (No quibble over Zedril needing it more; he knew that no one could see him, so he should've said something.)
GM Brute Squad: I can't find the second 1d6 from Kehl's alchemist's fire. Not asking for a retcon; just saying that now would be a good time, if I'm right that it hasn't happened yet. ;)
Dasiji feels two healing surges, and sighs with relief. "Thank you both!" Perception: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (12) + 6 = 18 "But that sounded like savagery and something heavy falling. Zedril?!" Reinvigorated, the scared and angry ranger swings blindly once more, striking at where he heard the creepy sound of the froggy monster biting into the stoic elf.
Standard attack w/greatsword: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (3) + 3 = 6
Miss chance: 1d100 ⇒ 58
Dasiji continues to slash the air to ribbons, which doesn't hurt the bright-eyed frog man at all.
AC 14, hp 12/12, blinded
Irijaya Suchitra |
Irijaya now turns her attention to the fallen Paladin.
Lophisel Irori, pict ril fuoctl!
Another Cure Light. 1d8 + 1 ⇒ (3) + 1 = 4... sigh. Only 4 HP back, Zedril. Sorry I couldn't do more, but at least you're still with us. 2/4 1st Level Spells per Day remain.
Dasiji Lekaya |
The stench of burnt froganoid in his nostrils, Dasiji listens to the silence. "Is that it? Quintus, can you tell if it's still emitting the light?" Once it is confirmed that their assailant is down, the Ijo ranger pulls the healing potion out of his pack and blindly feels his way to Zedril. "Here, drink this." (I think that just leaves two potions that Quintus is holding, one of cure light wounds and one of protection from evil.)
The ex-guard waits impatiently for his sight to return. "Do you think that this could be permanent? Does anyone know?" Once he can see again, Dasiji looks the room over for anything that Quintus might've missed. Perception: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (9) + 6 = 15
Now I'm not saying that I looked at the entry once the combat was over, but if anyone has Knowledge (arcana), they might consider rolling it. You know. Just in case that's the right one for this critter. ;)
Quintus Valorian |
In general, how do you want to do Knowledge checks to identify monsters' strengths/weaknesses? Need to put my bardic knowledge to use!
Once the sounds of combat have died down for a few seconds, Quintus carefully opens his eyes. "I think it's dead..."
Knowledge (arcana) 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (13) + 6 = 19
"The blindness should only be temporary. I've heard stories of these, mostly about adventurers traveling deep underground. I'm surprised one was so close to the surface." Quintus rummages around in his pack and pulls out the potion of cure light wounds he was holding. "If anyone is still injured I have one of these potions."
While waiting for everyone to recover their sight, Quintus takes a quick look around the room (Perception 1d20 ⇒ 12) and checks to see if any magical items might be hiding around (detect magic).
GM Brute Squad |
Zedril heals 1d8 + 1 ⇒ (3) + 1 = 4 HP.
After fumbling around for a while, the blindness wears off. In the room you find a trade agreement, three flasks of holy water, and a potion of cure moderate wounds. The wall to the right has collapsed, opening into another room.
Three rounded alcoves in this chamber contain the rotting remains of scroll shelves, honeycombing from floor to ceiling. Scattered amid the compromised shelving are damaged scrolls, and a number of still-sealed scroll tubes. A glimmering trickle of water seeps down from the ceiling in the northwest corner of the room. There is one closed door at the far end of the chamber.
After further investigation, you find a dozen more trade agreements that have not succumb to the mold, written in Kelish.
Does anyone know Kelish or have Linguistics?
GM Brute Squad |
Yes
The agreements detail pacts that Satrap Taliq Asad made with pirates, mercenary groups, petty lords, and even a few nations scattered about the Inner Sea region. One agreement contains a personal note addressed to the Satrap, congratulating him on gaining the Li family’s jade katana and the promise it contains.
Zedril "The Vengeful" |
That monster packed quite the punch.
Current HP - 7/11
Where shall we go next, through the wall or through the door?
GM Brute Squad |
You already went through the wall, I covered that in my summary. The door is your only option, unless you want to go back to the room with the pile of bones and take the wider passage to the northwest.
The door out of this room looks bloated with moisture, and probably stuck.
Dasiji Lekaya |
Dasiji scowls at his nemesis, a stuck door. "We need to heal up before moving on." Zedril and Kehl are each still down 4. "We're burning through potions and wands. I don't mind -- that's what they're for -- but if you prefer, we could rest up here, and I could even make a fire from those shelves to save our oil." I assume that falls under Survival. "Either way."
Zedril "The Vengeful" |
Resting will allow us to re-focus now that we know this is a bit more complicated than a simple retrieval of an item.
