Pssst! You don't count as a shark applicant just because you can out-eat one.

Actually, the grar was my fault. I overreacted to a redundant question and was a bit of an a****@&. It wasn't entirely undeserved, but it was still out of line.

I'm going to go ahead and announce the close of submissions in the next 24 hours since there are so many good ones to choose from. That should give people enough time to finish up unfinished ones and make any changes before I make final decisions.

Submissions will close at 3 PM EST tomorrow afternoon.

I feel your pain. This is the struggle that all we pirate-players face.

Withdrawing Shaless and entering Griselda Greenshanks, human witch. I'll finish her up tonight.

@Lazha Slicksheen

Water variant channeling is fine. I'm going to go ahead and say no on the stigmata. Not that I have a problem with reflavoring things, but it raises mechanical questions such as "are you considered bleeding?" and the sort. I'd rather avoid it than fudge it, sorry.

Fair enough. Consider it re-refluffed (unrefluffed?) into a dagger birthmark on her left forearm.

Here's a (rather long) RP scene which should give a sense of how Lazha would play out.

Lazha at Work:
It was a nondescript wooden stall in the Port Peril market, hung with faded scarves of black and gold to soften the lines. The sign said "Counseling" in hand-lettered formal Taldan script, and beneath it sat a striking young half-orc in a red floral dress.

"I don't understand," said the sailor, scratching his chin with weathered hands. "Where's your Harrow? Or your crystal?"

"I'm not a seer," she replied,"or a mystic. I'm a counselor. You have problems, we talk, and arrive at a solution. If you're satisfied, then you pay me." The half-orc shook a red glass bowl that sat by her right hand, rattling the silver and copper inside.

"But how do you use the magic?"

"No magic. Just wisdom." The woman smiled. "Think of me as a very young elder. Now sit." She indicated a chair with worn but comfortable-looking padding that sat across from her. "I'm Lazha. And you are..."

"Rennison," the sailor said, lowering himself into the chair. "But I don't have a problem. Not that anyone can solve, leastways."

"Of course not." Lazha looked the sailor over from head to foot with a gaze at once friendly and piercing. At last she said, "What's his name?"

Rennison spluttered. "I don't know what you mean. There's no--" He was interrupted by Lazha clearing her throat in annoyance. "Yaril. His name is Yaril. How did you--"

"Tell me about Yaril. What's he like? Where did you meet?

"At the tavern. The Formidably Maid. But I'd seen him working around on the docks before, unloading freight." Rennison looked around to make sure no one else was listening in. "He's got this smile, like a, like a sunrise. He knows all sorts of stuff, and he's devilishly quick. And he's strong -- well, for his size."

"For his size?"

"Yes, he's -- well, he's a halfling. But that ain't got nothing to do with anything. I don't go for young boys or anything like that. Yaril's just, he's just special."

"Of course not. There's nothing wrong with loving someone of another race. Goddess knows, my parents were happy enough. But people talk. Believe me, I understand. It can defeat you, but it can also make you stronger."

"Oh. Of course. That makes--"

"And what does Yaril think?"

"He -- well, he said we had some laughs, and there was some good times and all that, but he's not ready to have a steady fellow. He wasn't mean, he just--" Rennison looked down at his hands. "I just miss him, and I ain't sure how to live without him."

Lazha nodded. "I understand. Sometimes everything seems impossible, like you are trapped in a colorless world with no escape. But I tell you this. Love is the strongest thing there is. Properly nurtured, it can overcome all barriers -- barriers of race, of time, of strife, even of death. If you and Yaril are meant to be together, then you will be. This is what I do, counsel couples in love but beset by the vagaries of fate and help them achieve their destiny together."

Rennison nodded slowly. "That sounds -- lovely. But what if Yaril, what if he won't--"

"It may be," Lazha said softly, "that it is not your destiny to be together. And if that is true, then I can help you find...other ways of escaping the pain. I promise you that I can keep you from living a loveless life."

Rennison sat up eagerly. "So what do I need to do?"

"Come to my house tomorrow, just after sunset." Lazha handed him her card. "Talk to Yaril tonight. If he will come with you, then we will all talk, and you will start to build your lives together. If he won't--" Lazha shrugged. "Then come anyway. I will help you heal. Either way, bring ten gold, for my fee."

"Yes," Rennison stood and shook Lazha's hand enthusiastically. "Yes I will. And thank you, I had given up all hope."

Lazha watched as Rennison disappeared into the market with a new spring in his step -- the power of love made manifest. She wondered idly what his fate would be -- red or black, love or death. But now it was in the hands of Naderi, and would be as it must. To Lazha, it made no difference at all.

I'm withdrawing

Considering the immense competition on the divine role and not having the time to figure out a new one before the deadline I'm bowing out.

If it's not to late to sign up, I'm jumping in on this. There's not enough lizards roaming the high seas.

Background:
Kus-Kus is a former member of the Dankblade Crew (or Darkblade Tribe, to some old sea rats). Kus-Kus was a ship raider, and arguably the best of the bunch; growing up smaller than his hatch-mates, Kus-Kus had to make up for his size with grit and hustle. He is the perfect example of "It's not the size of the dog in the fight, but the size of the fight in the dog." Kus-Kus can be fierce and ruthless when he wants, and his exceptional level of confidence in himself makes him stand out, even among his fellow kobolds.
Having gotten lucky enough to survived raid after raid, as well as visit after visit from their local dragon flying over, Kus-Kus developed something dangerous for a kobold: an ego. He believes he is bound for bigger and grander things, and this began to interfere with his effectiveness within the crew. Thus, he was kicked out, marooned at a nearby port, a veritable death sentence for a kobold in the Shackles.
And yet somehow, Kus-Kus has not just survived, but thrived. His dogged determination and fierce personality make him a force to be reckoned with, even by hardened pirates and ship hands. Kus-Kus has been determined to have his own crew since day one, eager to show up those who kicked him out of his crew.

Well I think this little rat is all done but feel free to make suggestions. I make no promises of not adding or changing stuff. ;P

That's what I like best about the lists. They let you see what roles are already saturated, and we could definitely use some more arcane submissions!

I have played in a party that did not have any arcane casters (but 2 divine casters), and in another party without any divine casters (and 1.5 arcane - one was a bard), and both groups worked out just fine. Alot of arcane/divine spells ultimately do the same thing (fly vs air walk, haste vs blessing of fervor, good hope vs bard song, bark skin vs magic vestment vs displacement, passwall vs stone shape).

In the end, a good party just needs to fill the following roles between them: hammer (damage - weapon or spell), anvil (tank - warrior or summons/pets), reality-manipulator (arcane or divine) and a good range of skills, and often those roles end up being shared out and doubled up on amongst the party members. I've seen clerics out-blast sorcerers, paladins out-heal druids/oracles, and druids out-field-control wizards.

I'd say the only type of character we have too many submissions of is the super-sexualised female... One may be fine for a group, but in the end we want to be a members of a pirate ship crew, not an escort service! ;)

The Exchange

Well, I'd rather not play the warpriest until I've seen the final version, so I decided to roll up a magus instead. I made minimal changes to the backstory (benefits of having a class neutral one), but she's still Molly. I also realized what I posted in spoiler text got ate by the boards so go take another look for a much cleaner backstory and sample. I think I can deem her feature complete now. Any other changes will be purely grammatical/cosmetic.

But we could call our service... "Skull and Shackles" ;)

Griselda Greenshanks completed and not too super-sexualized I hope.

Who're you calling hyper-sexualised? Peggy's as chaste as a nun. (Ok, maybe not a nun)

Ok, Snarl's backstory, personality and physical description uploaded. I'll do the role-play example "A Night At the Formidably Maid" when I get home from uni.

Too many super-sexualized females and only one charming, classy, beautiful seductress...
Such a shame..

Added a personality tab to Peggy's profile... And some minor changes to gear.

Don't get me wrong, I have nothing against female characters. One of my favourite NPCs of all time was Mazzy Fentan from BG2. Female halfling fighter clad in full plate and strong enough to single-handedly pound into the dust enemies 2 or 3 size categories larger than her (ok, her strength was enhanced with a belt but iirc her base strength was pretty decent too), and a no-nonsense attitude to match.

That said, the sexualised female is relatively more common in a high-seas setting than in other fantasy sub-genres, and I'm not saying I hope to have none chosen. It's just that it seemed from the RP-posts that there were more than a few of such characters, and I'm cringing at the thought of more than one such character in a party.

Smoothing his head fringes and speaking in yappy draconic. "Nothing wrong with making it look good... not that I would know what makes a human female look good. They've got no fangs, fringes OR horns, looks ridiculous to me..."

Whoo, this thread really exploded since I posted yesterday! I think I've got everything I need; let me know if I missed anything! And good luck, all!

Well, to be completely honest I don't know if I can but I kinda plan to get horns one day.

The Exchange

Yuri Sneg, the son of a Baba Yagan daughter, is a firstborn. He was not taken in the last visit by Baba Yaga. A cruel omen. His mother believed this to be a sign that she was to be replaced upon the return of Baba Yaga. She could not kill him for he was of her blood, but she exiled him from Irrisen at a young age with a single Skald warrior.

This Skald warrior was to care for Yuri from his birth to manhood, but he was slain as they attempted to pass through the Iron Peaks towards Riddleport. Yuri was sold into slavery, but he was weak and young. He was not fit to row or lift, however he had a gift for tending to the sick and wounded. This earned him many a thanks as he extracted buckshot and arrows from sailors as he crossed the Arcadian Ocean on a slave galley.

As the only known male firstborn heir to Baba Yaga's power, he presents a a threat to the leadership in Irrisen, however he has vowed never to return to that region. If they did not want him, then he shall remain in The Shackles caring for the wounded and healing the sick. He has earned his freedom by saving the lives of countless pirates and a few esteemed captains.

After he tends to a beleaguered whore carrying the whelp of a pirate, he is ambushed in an alleyway. The press-gang knocking him unconscious before dragging him away for his "talents".

I was tempted to take the "Feral" Alternate Racial Trait, which removes the Orc's automatic languages (Orc + Common) in exchange to +1 attack rolls and damage rolls when on negative hit points. Unfortunately, it took away his Orcish Weapon Familiarity, and his Archetype wouldn't let him have it otherwise.

Because they're totally going to start whoring themselves out to every Tom, Dick, and Harry with an eye patch ;). Well one might, but its not really whoring its more of a religious thing.

I really really have no idea how I'm going to choose, holy crap. Only three others? Only three others?!?

What the hell was I thinking?

I am so terribly torn. If only I had the freetime to run two games, I would take all of my favorites. Except even that wouldn't be enough! Ugh, this is easily the most painful decision I've ever had to make in my history of gaming. Most of you are so so good. And I'm sure you know which ones you are. Please don't feel bad if I don't take you, because trust me, I REALLY wish I could. I feel like I can't stress that enough. No matter who I take, others who also deserves it are losing out, and that makes me pretty sad.

People let their real life prejudices of 'bad/evil/unclean' activities bleed into their RP too much. Does your character, who is likely a pirate, give half a crap if there's a prostitute on board? I would venture to say no. I'd just like to see the snipes at other people's characters end.

I'll get the rest of my character (background, RP samples) posted shortly.

Lantern Lodge

Sorry if you (or any of the others) thought it was a snipe, Kenji. I wasn't criticising the character type, nor would my character care much if there was a prostitute on board. And per my earlier post, I do think that sort of character has its place in the sub-genre, and more so than other in other sub-genres.

But I did want to make the observations that there were a quite a number of such characterisations among the applications, and too much of them in the one party would potentially change the entire tone of the game. One might add flavour, two a strong flavour (not necessarily overpowering, but the potential would be there). But three would, in my opinion for what its worth, start to change the dish entirely.

Put another way, you could take my observation as a suggestion that your coming application might be considered more favourably if you designed your character's personality in a manner that was a little more distinct from the others. =)

Lantern Lodge

To make my point in another way via illustration:

The ninja turtles are essentially 4 fighter-ninjas. Very similar crunch. But what makes them interesting as a team is the interaction between their varied characterisations (Stoic, Angry, Smart/Nerd and Goof). That's what, in my opinion, helps make a interesting story. =)

No one ever should ever have hard feelings about these things, we've all had the chance to see the legion of awesome and quirky characters you've had to pick and choose from :)

There sure are a lot of very strong applicants. Probably more than I've seen on a recruitment thread before... Maybe its the (rare) chance to play an evil character?..

The last 3 or 4 games I've applied for have been similar though.

I think there are just more good Roleplayers around, which is always a good thing.

Grand Lodge

Maybe none of those characters will be chosen, and maybe we'll be Captain Jack and his merry whores, but that's up to the GM, and not anyone else.

Just for a moment ponder if all these great characters were in the Formidably Maid that fateful evening... There just wasn't enough room to shanghai them all!

Places a bomb behind each PC. Does a double take, slowly returning his latest bomb behind his mantle.

"Now I won't say that I will not be disappointed about being passed up. But really I won't have hard feelings about it. You win some and lose some. A moments ping of regret and you move on, trying to make the next as good if not better."

Sneaks off into the shadows to plant more bombs. Everyone deals with disappointment differently after all. xD

The Exchange

Yeah. You could always use the Little Jack method of getting rejected from an S&S game. Get your friend to create another one with blackjack and hookers!

Hrm... the number of arcane submissions have expanded faster than my waistline. They do seem a little on the thin side, but perhaps as a whole, they could sate my hunger. Hrm... are Magi considered "arcane" or something else (such as "melee" or "miscellaneous")? I need to know if they are to be on my plate with the others or not.

The Exchange

Eh, they are arcane but they're selfish casters and should really be divided based on how they plan on delivering their touch attacks (either melee or ranged). They are party hammers and rarely overlap with full spellcasters.

So Molly's not on your plate :p

Grand Lodge

Ok, that's everything for Val.

Magi, like Kenji here who is my main PFS character, are melee fighters primarily, who use their spells for damage and personal defense. At higher levels (7+) you get some really useful spells that help the whole team, like haste, fly, black tentacles, etc. Before that however, you need to use your spells for yourself to not be a burden to the team. Shield, mirror image, and vanish are absolutely critical to your survival, and Shocking Grasp is your main damage spell, especially intensified with magical lineage at later levels. 20d6 on a crit for a level 1 slot is no joke.

Appearance:

Valarael is a tall, thin, elven woman, with long, straight, platinum-blonde hair. She has a beautiful, angular face, with striking blue, tilted eyes. Her skin is very fair, smooth, and unmarred. She wears well-cut but utilitarian yellow linen, with a black leather vest and overskirt. Her studded leather armor is black with studs of yellow-dyed metal. Her belt and boots are of the same black leather, and a painted wooden holy symbol is displayed prominently on thong around her neck. She carries many small vials in slots on her belt and bandoleers, and carries a sheathed rapier at her waist.

Personality:

Valarael tries to embody the detached, feylike nature of the elves like her goddess, Calistria. She chooses her path and holds to it, not because of some higher calling or sense of duty, but because she chooses it. While she harbors a grudge once given reason, she is not cruel to those who do not deserve it, and she has a soft spot for children, slaves, and mistreated animals. She is a sensual being, charismatic and beautiful, and she uses that aspect of herself to hide her intellect and agility from others. Valarael lacks strong moral convictions, and any appearance of a moral code is simply expediency and self-preservation. For example, senseless killing goes past her bounds, as it would merely cause another to visit vengeance upon her.

Background:

Though born in Kyonin, Valarael Shadowsong remembers almost nothing of it. At only a few years of age, her parents left the land of the elves to live in the City at the Center of the World after her mother had been invited to join the Pathfinder Society. Shortly thereafter, Val's father, a moderately famous carpenter in Kyonin, was contracted by a group of fellow Calistria worshipers to craft all the furniture for their new temple in Absolom. Val was left in the care of the Calistrian priests much of the time while her mother was away and her father worked, though she picked up a few carpentry lessons from him. Her duties at the temple was exposure to various alchemical and black market substances used by the priests and sacred prostitutes. This kindled the young elf's interest in alchemy, and she proved extremely adept at the skills required for what became her passion. Val essentially lived at the temple and made a number of friends and lovers there, although she never became a priest herself, these experiences led Val to be an extremely devout worshiper of the Savored Sting.

Upon reaching her majority, Valarael became a sacred prostitute for a five years. During this time she learned to leverage her beauty and magnetism to get what she wanted, as well as the value of serving others for one's own gain. True to her goddess, Val sought to experience all the world's pleasures, and took to traveling to do so. Her first travels were devoted to her burgeoning love of alchemy. The young elf traveled to wizard and alchemist schools and universities around the Inner Sea, using her body as currency, to learn the ways of far flung alchemists. She learned of mixtures that improved the mind at the expense of the body, fiery explosions, alchemical tools and weapons, medicine both common and magical, and magical concotions that emulated the spells of mages.

Now truly an alchemist, Val had a variety of skills to pay passage to the far flung destinations she wished to see. A ship that had no need for a surgeon or alchemist would almost always take payments of flesh for passage, and the world opened up to her. Over the course of two decades, Valarael saw more of the world than most, from the exotic lands of Tian Xia, to the Impossible Kingdoms of Vudra, to most of the lands of the Inner Sea. She discovered a profound love of knowledge and libraries on her journeys, and learned foreign languages of to peruse the tomes of some of these distant temples of learning. While not profitable in terms of material wealth, these journeys provided Val with all the happiness she could hope for.

Her most recent journey was to the Mwangi expanse, where she studied tribal history and the pieced together language known as 'Polyglot'. Having spent a few years there, she's off to the Land of the Linnorm Kings, to see what she can find in that distant, northern land. However, with a storm forcing a stop in the Shackles, a night at the Formidably Maid may prove to force a different journey altogether, at least for the time being.

I'm coming through!" She drops her javelin and rushes down the hallway, drawing her sword. As the pale monk deftly sidesteps, she raises her shield, blocking the bite of the one in her path, her momentum knocking it to the ground as she crashes into it. The claw of the other clangs harmlessly off her epaulet as she passes by.

"You shall not have this one while I draw breath! By Iomedae I swear it!"

This was from the pre-selection RP of that same game. Another character, who also ended up being selected, told a story in character. I did my best to match him.

"Many thanks, Xamarath, I am indeed a warrior, and from the lands north of here," Kala says to the wizard in red, and continues, "I would be happy to hear a tale."

Kala listens attentively to the recounting, enjoying it. "A fine boast, much like those told at festivals in my homeland," she thinks. The man's use of magic to enhance the performance was well done, as well done as the Skalds in the Lands of Linnorm Kings in her opinion.

After the performance, Kala spoke up, "Well done Xamarath, a finer boast could not have been made by a Skald. Allow me a humble attempt to at least be a candle to your sun."

The Ulfen warrior removes her helmet, placing it on the ground, and takes a moment to compose herself. After a deep breath she begins, "From the ruined lands of Sarkoris my ancestor, Valki, traveled west. Alone, she crossed the witch-cursed land of Irrisen. Alone, she carved out a new life for herself in the Lands of the Linnorm Kings. Alone, she earned the respect of the Ulfen through her skill at arms."

Kala pauses, wetting her lips, then continues "But her time alone was at an end when the frost giant Grimnir Icehammer raided Valki's village. Though she fought mightily, she could not slay the giant. Time and time again, giant and warrior clashed, and each time neither was slain. Valki's strength was beginning to flag against the tireless assault when an Ulfen man joined the battle, armed with naught but this sling," she gestures to the sling on her belt and goes on, "and armored with naught but a wool shirt. His name was Olaf Mudheel and he was a mere goatherder. Olaf launched rock after rock at the giant, doing little damage, only distracting it. Soon, Grimnir turned and swung his hammer at Olaf, striking true and launching the man 15 feet through the air."

A look of pride settles upon the warrior as she concludes, "Valki, however, saw her chance, and took it. She hacked at the giant's ankle, felling him like a great tree. Three times Valki drove her shield, now my shield, into its face, and three times she drove her sword, now my sword, into its heart. For this deed, Valki was given the name Giantsbane, and the man she married was no longer Olaf Mudheel, but Olaf Fireheart."

Kala bows as she finishes the story and says, smiling, "Perhaps more humble than your story fair wizard, but no less heroic."

RP Sample 3:

I'm just writing this off the cuff to show a bit of Val's personality. Harder to do with no one to key off of.

The stormwall approached as lightning danced over the ocean just west of Port Peril, a scant few miles offshore now. On the dock an elven woman and a human man argued. "Well, you'll just have to make do with what you've had, Kleddus." Val said, smirking. "If you think you're entitled to more, you've the wit of a shovel. Journey's done and so's my payment for it." Val could see the man was infuriated, he'd obviously come to think of her as his property. The men she'd slept with were like that somtimes, she just hoped he had the sense not to push the issue. It was bad enough being blown into the gods know what kind of situation in the Shackles, she didn't need a burned boat and an angry chasing after her again. It'd gotten a little dicey the last time a ship's captain had become possessive.

"Now list'n her' yuh elf-cunt!" the man roared, "Yer guna be doin what I tell yuh ta do! An'if yer thinkin' not, I'll let the boys have yuh too!" The old ship's captain reached for her arm and Val dodged out of the way, deftly grabbing a pair of vials from her bandoleers as she backtracked.

"You know I can burn your damned ship down with a few of these if I want to," Valarael said in a warning tone, hefting the two tiny vials, "and Calistria help me, I will if you give cause." The man's face nearly went white as she spoke.

"Damn you and damn yer whore goddess." Kleddus shouted, spitting on the ground before Valarael at the end of each sentence. "Get outma sight, and take yer thrice-cursed mule with ya. Yer not welcome board muh n'more. Spread yer legs fer anudda way of this rock!"

Val could hear him cursing loudly as he walked back into his cabin, but she merely shrugged and turned away. She walked down the dock and grabbed Flagg's reins, leading the mule into the pirate capital, in search of whatever passed for an inn. Eventually finding her way to the Formidably Maid, Val stabled Flagg and decided to stay in the common room for the evening, guessing that not sleeping would be the safeest choice. As Val walked to the entrance of the tavern, she heard a cry, and turned to see a pair of men roughing a human woman up, likely preparing to rape her. The elf drew a pair of vials for the second time that night, but just as she was about to call out to the men, the world went dark.

Just for a moment ponder if all these great characters were in the Formidably Maid that fateful evening... There just wasn't enough room to shanghai them all!

Maybe they just got shanghai'd on other ships?

Who knows?

Onto the ships they are to fight?
Cue on the opposing ships/fleet the other characters.

Oh...have i just given the GM a devious idea? :)

Good golly. Don't do that to me. 6 hours to deadline and you shove another solid submission under my nose? I think you're all out to break me.
