Over the next two weeks I am preparing for a small bi-annual Con I am running. There is lots of admin to do so it has an impact on my free time.

But I will post as and when I can. Perrah is up for the prison and it in doubt she stays back and uses her crossbow. Saves her magic for when it counts.


Randu has it in the right, the promotion and transition at work have been killing me recently. Sorry for the delays, I know it feels like I'm constantly apologizing for this. But just to be clear the game is not over, far from it.

Note on Haunts:

Learning the nature and effects of a specific haunt is generally like any other knowledge check to learn about a "hazardous feature". In this case it will be Knowledge: Religion, DC 15 + CR of the haunt, and Mortimer your bonus vs undead would apply. Now obviously certain haunts might fall outside of this rule if they're story/encounter specific (especially when it comes to learning their destruction means) but "general" haunts will follow this rule. You also may not make this check until you have evidence of a haunt's existense, see next paragraph.

Another thing to note is that even though they're mechanically somewhat modeled after traps, haunts do not often have a way to perceive them until after they've activated. This is why, if you look at the Slamming Portal haunt link in the game thread, it lists a DC 10 Perception check to notice yet Randu didn't find it when searching for traps. It was only after it first activated that you could then attempt to perceive it and Mortimer could make his knowledge check. In this instance, given the DC 10, I just assumed you would all see it and described it as such. But there are examples of haunts that you might not have the chance to notice occuring.

Given all the updates I was making to it, I realized there was a better way to display the map. I've posted the map link up in the header of the campaign so it'll always be easy to find. It'll always be updated as you find new rooms, stuff, etc.

Perrah raised a good point DMJ, can we bring the papers with us to do research at a different location that might be safer? (And still get the +2 bonus from what we found here?)


No, you'd need to use the papers here. There's too many to take with you without some kind of magical aid, like a portable hole, etc. Think filing cabinets full of documents for an amount, these rooms were the bearucratic hub of the prison.

Also just to be clear, did you mean the door in the western wall or are you going back into that first main room that was haunted? North is up on the map, sorry if I didn't make that clear. I'll include it on the next map update.

Just as a suggestion, looking at the map, and the shaper of the prison heading north is likely going deeper into the prison, while heading east is still the perimeter. Should we not clear the front before moving deeper?

2 quick things.

1) With the holidays upon us, obviously schedules will become a little weird for people and there might be instances of unexpected downtime for folks. Totally understanding and we'll accomodate as needed. Specifically for Turkey Day, I'm gonna be busy Thursday and a chunk of Friday but I'll still try to have an update posted hopefully once per day at least. So happy holidays and such.

2) Some of you may or may not have noticed but I've posted a new recruitment thread up for another game I'm gonna run. I'll be running the 3.5 module Expedition to Castle Ravenloft! If you're interested, take a look and post on the thread.

Hey DMJ! I played in a return to Castle Ravenloft years ago when it came out. We dident get very far as I remember. As it happens I had 2 campaigns fall through in the last few weeks and I have been looking for another game. I'll take a look. As I recall there was some sort of Raven Paladin prestige class that had a good flavor. I would love to apply.

Umm hell yes I'm interested. I love ravenloft and have never gotten the chance to play Expedition.


The general haunt rules are on the pfsrd site so you can reference them there as well but here's the breakdown of how they work and my mistake.

So I thought haunts just happened and that was that but they can be persistent, turn by turn, which got me thinking to check the rules and found out I was wrong. A haunt functions on a flat Init count 10. The Perception check listed with a haunt's entry is the check to see if you notice the manifesting details which would allow you to act in the Surprise round.

So in the current example, Randu and Alexei noticed the furnace turning into the face and so get a surprise round action. But with the init rolls, only Randu will get the chance to act before the haunt in said surprise round.

Now this might seem like a somewhat useless roll to get as you don't necessarily know what is about to happen with the haunt but it could be helpful. For instance, in the previous haunt Mortimer and Vharg, had they made the Perception check and won init, could have potentially moved out of the area of effect and avoided the cold damage, or cast a cold protection type spell if they had one, etc.

Sorry for the confusion and the previous boning. Because of this, I am removing the 1 point of Str damage Mortimer took as it's an easy way to help not penalize you for a previous mistake.

S%&*, that was 15 damage, I'm really lucky that it missed. I say we use the haunt siphons/channel/holy water. I don't want to risk someone taking another hit like that.


Once Round 1 starts, I'll post the Knowledge check to determine info about the haunt.
