As the Lady took sail leaving Drenchport it was with mixed feelings as Variel stood at the prow watching the waves. He had lost a good and faithful friend that would not easily be replaced. Variel had few such friends and each loss was keenly felt. That it may have been because of him was even worse. Standing vigil over the body Variel spent the night with Adular. Come dawn Variel took his dagger and sliced off a few hairs and placed them in a stoppered vial. Why he did so even Variel did not fully understand.
During the ceremony as Sandara spoke words Variel stood in silent tribute to the fallen. as the body was lowered to the sea and released to Besmara's bosom Variel waited till he was the last. Only then did he break from his vigil to seek refuge in his cabin he shared with Rain.
The next morning though Variel woke early and seemed to have put the death of Adular behind him. If asked why the sudden change Variel answer seriously, I can do no more for my friend. I grieved for his loss. It does no good to dwell on the past when we have the future to face. His memory will linger on as well and that is enough. Adular would understand and approve.
The remainder of the time Variel spent finishing Horatio's armor to better protect him. He had just finished when the sound of 'Land Ho' was heard. Racing up the steps he peered off in the distance to verify the fact himself. As they got closer Variel could see for himself how nice the island actually was. He expected a barren atoll but this lush verdant green island was beyond his hopes. A large bay protected by outlaying land masses would be a perfect location to moor the ship. The waterfall in the distance would provide fresh water. Fish and animal life would provide meat. the size of the island would allow a decent sized town for protection and a home.
Before he got drawn into the future though he hears Horatio call out and he himself agrees with the master gunner. Sounds like a sound idea. Let us sail around the island first to get a good look at her before we make for the bay and the fort. Who knows, we may see signs of these Cyclopes that were mentioned to live here. Rain, dear, if you would be so kind as to take us north around the island?

Old Salt looked at the man beside the Taneththir girl and responded in a plain manner, "I never said they were movin' fast nor if they were male or female - only that a cloaked figure was seen in the alley before the time of the murder, but afterwards no one could say where this person went. The cloaked figure had the height, carriage and grace of an Elf and even though the Elf could not be seen clearly - a very pointed Elven-like ear was glimpsed briefly before the hood was drawn lower to obscure their face. You may accept the information or not, it doesn't make much difference to me."
Horatio's easy manner vanishes instantly.
He turns and looks at Rain somewhat helplessly.
"When I try getting specific, I get called pedantic or long-winded. When I sum up then there's confusion..." he says with a sigh.
He keeps looking at Rain.
"He said the figure was moving so that none even saw what direction he was going... I mean, that sounds like he was moving fast to me... but it's true - the word "fast" wasn't said."
He takes a deep breath and smiles and then turns back to "Old Salt"...
"Thank you for time and your help; it was very helpful and we both appreciate it very much," he says with a completely polite and sincere voice, then stands and bows and turns to Rain.
"Begging your pardon; shall we away?" he asks her with elaborately good manners as he tips his hand to his forelock politely at Old Salt, then he offers her his arm.
After they leave the bar...
His face is dark and his eyes flat as they walk.
"Gods I hate people like that..." he says with a tight voice.
He sighs and takes a deep breath.
"Okay, so right now we got a figure that's been called an Elf because it possessed the relative size and grace of an Elf and it's completely impossible for a Man to have the same basic size and grace of an Elf..."
"This was supplemented by the fact that figure was seen to have a pointed ear under the hood... And not the kind of pointed ear that a Human might have, or seem to have if he was moving quickly and had a loose hood to obfuscate it, and not the kind of ear that a Half-Elf would have... but no; they saw enough to know it was an Elf, but nothing else... No hair color, or eye color, or skin color... and, apparently not even the gender of the Elf... though now I got a hunch it was a female not a male... but whatever," he says as he throws his hands in the air with frustration.
He looks at Rain as they walk.
"I could have asked the guy for more information but what's the point? He won't share anything other than he did," he says with a frustrated tone.
"The thing is - oh what the hell..." he mutters as he does his best to calm down.
He looks at Rain.
"Sorry; I don't mean to be such an ass... I guess I'm just frustrated that I couldn't be more helpful is all," he says to her apologetically.

During the ceremony as Sandara spoke words Variel stood in silent tribute to the fallen.
Horatio hears the last words of Sandara as the body eulogy is given.
"So say we all..." he says with a tight voice, and Amen-set echoes his words behind him.
Later -
Horatio is very pleased with the work that Variel did on the armor.
It fit well as seemed very comfortable when he had tried it on and he thanks Variel again for the help.
Thanks again - I'll adjust my sheet in a moment...
After he offers his suggestion, he hears Variel's response...
Sounds like a sound idea. Let us sail around the island first to get a sound idea. Let us sail around the island first to get a good look at her before we make for the bay and the fort. Who knows, we may see signs of these Cyclopes that were mentioned to live here. Rain, dear, if you would be so kind as to take us north around the island?"
He nods and then peers ahead.
"Amen-set - why not send your bird up to scout things out a bit... See if it can't make out what the fortress looks like; at least what that crystal-like thing is in the tower there, eh?" he says to her.
Amen-set turns and peers at the fortress and notes that the ship is tacking to the northeastern flank of the island and studies the tower for a moment as she gentles Horus.
She glances at Horatio and nods, then flies Horus aloft...
GM - Amen-set is sending Horus in a leisurely flight close to the fortress, but not too close, just enough that it can get a decent look at what's there and then report back to Amen-set.

Horatio turns to Variel -
"Begging your pardon, but I seem to recall that Dhaavan's bird Jack can do the same trick... Perhaps he could scout things out to the north? I mean, if there are cyclops on the island then them seeing a bird flying around shouldn't draw a lick of attention," he adds.
Not sure if anyone wants to NPC Dhaavan at this point...
Horatio waves Amen-set over to stand by him and help keep watch.
Meanwhile, he pulls out his journal and begins to furiously catalog the general size and disposition of the island before them.

![]() |

Variel shakes his head no at the idea of sending out Jack. Remember what happened last time he tried that? the poor bird sprouted quills and it took everything to keep Dhaavan from jumping over the side of the ship to save Jack. Not worth it to him or us at this point.

Horatio glances aft at Variel.
"Actually, I had forgotten... but that's a good point," he says with a wry grin.
Then he turns to some of the sailors and asks them to toss the lead so he can get a sense of how deep the water as they're sailing for his notes.
He peers at the island as the ship eases to the northeast and his eyes focus on a ridge peaking through the trees on the south eastern side of the island...
Actually, the spot directly east of the X on the map that's poking through the trees. I'm surprised that's not where the fort was, but it looks like they kept it close to the beach and a stream, so that could be handy, too. But that may be a good ridge to build a watchtower on; getting stone up there could be an issue, but if we build a wooden one then we should have plenty of material - plus, from what the map has on it, having a guard tower there probably will overlook the eastern approach to the island.
Also - GM - can we get a scale for the island regarding feet or miles from end to end? Also, how many feet do the lines of elevation represent on the map? Like that ridge has three circles raising to the summit - if each line of elevation is only 10 feet, that means the ridge is only 30 feet high... is that right?

DM Immortal |

look at the top of the map. There is a scale there of 1 mile and it's about 8-9 miles on a side.
The cliffs are sheer and are not done by 10 feet. Those cliffs are about 500 feet tall. the same for the cliffs to the north of the bay.

Horatio Flynn |

Brief Addendum…
Horatio watches the western side of the large bay and then his eyes follow the course of the river or stream beyond it as it meanders up a large hill with rocks on the top.
He nods thoughtfully and calls back to Variel –
”Not sure how big that fort is, if it’s just a tower or maybe even as big as the piece on Lord Dhaavan’s Island,” he says, alluding to the large tower that they dealt with on Tidewater Rock ”but for now I'm still waiting to see what Horus brings us after her flight.”
”But it looks like there may be another advantage to that waterway near it…” he adds, his mind ranging over the possibilities via his knowledge in basic engineering.
”At the top of the hillock beyond the fort where the water starts looks like some big rock formations. Can’t be sure what type they are from here, but if I had to wager, I’d figure that if folk were trying to build a fort by the water they could quarry the rocks at the summit of the hil where the heavier rocks are and then – possibly – load the rocks onto a raft and just ferry them right down to the fort itself.”
He turns his eyes to the foredeck and watches the ship plow through the waves, then makes a note in his ledger, then turns his gaze back to the receedin western coast.
”I don’t know if that’s accurate, of couse, but if we have some actual stonework to be attending to on the fortress then being able to move rock to it quickly and easily will likely save us a lot of time,” he adds with a touch of optimism.
He then turns a gaze to Rajah –
”That reminds me, I wasn’t with you all when you did the investigation near where the…. Where you found the padre,” he says after a moment.
”Did you find anything else of note there?” he asks, trusting to Rain to share with Variel about the mysterious cloaked Elf.
Naturally Horatio is happy to share more with Rajah, but he’s not specifically volunteering too much yet. They had some difficult issues on their plate and he didn’t want to overwhelm a new crewmember.
More to come soon – including new NPC – I should have more up tonight.
For now I’m just waiting for the rest of the map to unfold as we circle the island. It’s also possible that other outposts may have been constructed on the north side, too, which could be worth exploring.
GM – Horatio has been “tossing the lead” to gauge the relative depth. Basically he’s trying to see if there’s a good place to bring the ship. Probably we’ll find one near the fort, but for now I’m wondering if there’s another place around the coast, too. It’s mainly meant for Social RP (as it’s what Horatio would do when he’s waiting around) but it’s something to do.
Question to Dhaavan or Variel – if you’re able to make the second suit of Armor and up the two Amulets, too, that would be cool. Upping Dexterity thing will help me with Armor as well as attacking, and the Charisma thing will help Horatio with both his Grit and his Spells, if you have a chance for that, too. No rush, but if you get time, I’m all for it. Thank you both so much!

Just saw this now. Yikes! So the lines for Elevation are 500 feet? Wow, that's pretty tall stuff. Do we have a "scale" for how long the island is (like; I think you said 10 miles? But not sure how long that would be, yet ;)
Finally, at work now, but when you said look at the "top" of the map, did you mean the top part that was uncovered right where that tiny strip of water comes out, or did you mean something else?
For now I'll trust to Rain's piloting. Horatio will leave Amen-set on watch, wait for Horus to return via the perception check and share what was found, and he'll keep cannon primed and balista loaded, just in case we see anything dangerous. See you all tonight, and I'll have the NPC up by then (I hope)!

DM Immortal |

edited above to add what the cliffs sort of look like
They average about 500 feet in height with some minor variations.
If someone flew straight up a thousand feet or so they could get a good impression of the island, at least enough to reveal the map. That said it might be a good idea to make them invisible first just in case anyone is watching.

Jack complains about it, but after being reminded again about the mantacore incident, he acquiesces, saying that his new buddy is better suited to that anyway...
Dhaavna will report back and draw up a map for the party after a short wait.

Shaking his head, "Nothing really. Variel was able to determine what type of magic was used but other than that, nothing."

Updated the map with Dhaavan's info. Although how he got the info you're not sure.

Horatio Flynn |

Shaking his head, "Nothing really. Variel was able to determine what type of magic was used but other than that, nothing."
Horatio nods his head slowly, not really surprised, but certainly disappointed that more couldn't be discovered.
He sighs and considers the island itself as he continues to take notes and sketch the coastline.
"I wonder if Amen-set's bird will find anything," he says with a grunt, then notices that even then Horus is returning and he sighs and shakes his head.
I can get some scouting done. Just give me a moment, Dhaavan steps into his study briefly and comes out, glancing into the air, Jack twittering with agitation, Dhaavan replying in the same twittering speech.
After a short while, Dhaavan has shared the notes with others and Horatio has quickly done what he can to add the information to his personal journal and notes.
He leans forward and studies the information with the others.
"Looks like there's a decent bay on the north side... don't know why they didn't build anything there... on the other hand, it looks like there's at least a few bridges here," he says as he points at the bridge in the northern side "and here," he adds, pointing at the one toward the eastern side.
"Seems like right next to that east bridge is a wide, flat level area we could land at... looks at least as big as the area near the fort," he muses thoughtfully.
"The thing is - if there's a cyclops on this island it may be using the bridge, but I figure that maybe the fortress there is too small for a full grown cyclops to move around in..." he says glancing up at the others.
"What do you all think? Should we try landing on the north side and then follow the roads? It seems likely that it'll probably lead us to where a Cyclops could be living... Or do you think that maybe the south side by the fort is a better place to try?" he says looking around at the others.

Thomas Harrow |

The new figure that has been hired as an Engineer moves forward with the others and peers at the map.
His short black hair and the right side of his face seem cultured and handsome, but the left side of his face is covered in a mass of scars which have gorged on what was his eye and pushed their white fingers into his throat, making it hard for him to speak.
A musket hangs over his shoulder, and a well used short sword at his side.
"The river protects the north side of the fort... The hill to the west of the fort seems very steep... It looks like the fort does not have a good approach over land... except for the coast."
He looks from Horatio's notes at the others.
"A large enemy will likely travel over the coast, not through the trees by the foot of the hill... The beach is long and narrow... You could defend it with few men, and your ship could fire on threats, too... If you have men land by the fort then that area should be easier to defend... Until you make a decision on the fort," he says with a dry, raspy voice.
Amen-set looks at the others with a piercing eye.
"This is Thomas Harrow - he is here to help us with the island," she tells everyone as he turns and stares at her for a moment, then turns to look back at the others.

We do not know all that the island is hiding in its woods and hills. We know there are rumors of Cyclopes and dinosaurs. Who knows what else is there as well. Our first priority should be establishing a defensive area that we can use as a home base. The fort gives us that defensible area plus the knowledge of what if any repairs we need to do.
If indeed the fort is the first location...
Turning to the crew he calls out to them. We are nearing what could be our new home base. However this is an untamed island so be on guard for anything. Once we get to the fort remain on the ship till we have explored inside to make sure it is safe.

Horatio Flynn |

If indeed the fort is the first location...
Variel - I thought that the GM marked the fort on the map with the red x? If he didn't, then I'm completely out of my reckoning. Also, we can't just sail the ship to the beach, that would ground her - we'll need to get relatively close and then take a boat in - unless there are docks by the fort that we're able to use? For now, I'm not entirely sure what's up, though... Do you want to try to go to the red X at this point? And if we take a boat in, who's going on the boat - and who's going to stay on the ship?

![]() |

Sail the ship into the bay as close to the fort as possible. Then see what is there as we are closer. there may be a dock already we don't know from this distance.

Please don't use the Thomas Harrow avatar on here. He is not another character of yours Flynn. Not mad or anything but I'm going to control all the NPC's. Thanks for building him however. He'll be good in the background and is good in case anyone dies for a potential ready made replacement or something like that.

Horatio Flynn |

Please don't use the Thomas Harrow avatar on here. He is not another character of yours Flynn.
The character was developed because I personally enjoy writing characters, it was something that I found really fun to do, actually. I also like to write; writing is, for me, really fun - and as the character developed I had hoped to flex my writing abilities via how to develop a character that could be considered "Evil" by some, but wasn't "actually" evil at all (I initially took inspiration from "Richard Harrow" from Boardwalk Empire, and then Sheldon Cooper from The Big Bang Theory). The more I thought about it, the more I started to realize a lot of people thought Sheldon was so mean and horrible, but the actor who plays him (Jim Parsons) has said in interviews that though the show writers had told him multiple times that "Sheldon" is not someone who has Autism, Jim Parsons has decided to play Sheldon like that (see how he acted in the First Season vs. later seasons, for example). In that case, Sheldon isn't evil, he's just someone who doesn't understand Social Norms very well; does that make him "evil", or does it make him seem that way to people who don't know him very well? Naturally, this was something that I found to be very exciting to develop as a writer, and when I came up with the "backstory" I took the time for that - not because it could be in the game - but as a fun aside to try to develop the concept as a writer.
I put it in an Avatar because I know that tracking down notes can be difficult, but if it's summed up in an Avatar it should be easy to find for either you, or the Co-GM, if you're looking for notes.
I made 1 post on the board to link the NPC to the campaign for easy reference. I could have done that on the Discussion Thread, but I thought that making one post using his "voice" would be okay; I also thought his comments were the sort of thing that former Military Engineer would say if they saw a map.
I never intended to cause issues, or upset people. I also did not try to make the game less fun for everyone with the post (actually, my initial hope is that it might be fun for others to be able to read what I wrote). In any case, please don't worry; it won't happen again.

Rain Taneththir |

A little more retcon so Rain could share some info with the others.
After the sombre service to Adular, Rain waited until the crew had returned to their respective duties and spoke discreetly to the Officers (this includes Amen and Rajah, as well), "From the information dealer in Drenchport, there was a sighting of a dark-hooded Elf in the very alley Adular was found in just before his death. Afterwards there was no sign of the person. The Elf wasn't a local by the sounds of it. Variel, she turned to look at her betrothed, I wonder if this Elf is connected to your family - the one you never knew. A vendetta? Or it could be something other ... It is just strange that it was an unfamiliar Elf. They could not identify the creature for it kept its hood down low and its body covered for the most part. But Flynn had his own thoughts on the matter - that mayhap it was mistaken as an Elf and it was something other..."
Rain, I have your circlet completed, He says, bringing out a wrapped package. I had to get some help with the script, but it's a runic etching based on Elven and Aquan words for sea, sight, forethought, and such. The fine emerald etching is an almost alien flowing script that glints with deep blues of the sea. The dye for the inks is actually made with water that splashed up on the ship while you piloted us through the Eye, he adds.
Not sure if you want it soon as it's done or after we hit the sea and start sailing toward our island.
Rain admired the circlet - Dhaavan had put such care in its design as well as its power. "Thank you. It is beautiful." She lifted the tricorne and placed the circlet on her head and then placed the tricorne back over the top of it. She'll accept and wear it as they sail toward the Island. :) She paid for it with 500 gp of magical reagents and 1,500 gold pieces.
Current time.
I can get some scouting done. Just give me a moment, Dhaavan steps into his study briefly and comes out, glancing into the air, Jack twittering with agitation, Dhaavan replying in the same twittering speech.

Then he turns to some of the sailors and asks them to toss the lead so he can get a sense of how deep the water as they're sailing for his notes.
Noting his orders and task, Rain called down to Flynn, "Flynn, what is the depth of the water, here? We wouldn't want the ship to run aground. I will do my best to ensure that does not happen."

But Flynn had his own thoughts on the matter - that mayhap it was mistaken as an Elf and it was something other..."
Horatio nods slowly at Rain's comments.
"Well, I guess what got me thinking was that when we saw Harrigan's ship there was a mysterious cloaked and hooded figure with him. At the time I joked it was the mysterious "Man in Black" - but I didn't know if it was a Man, or an Elf, or anything in particular, especially at the distance we were..."
He rubs his chin thoughtfully, then continues.
"It could be a major coincidence, but maybe that figure and the one on Harrigan's ship are connected? I mean, I could be totally wrong in calling him a "Man in Black" - he could have been an "Elf in Black", or they could have nothing to do with each other... But if they do, that would mean that the threat of this Shanxia thing - as well as Harrigan himself - would be intertwined in a way that could lead to a very dangerous showdown," he adds, as if not really sure if that's even possible.
Current time.
Noting his orders and task, Rain called down to Flynn, "Flynn, what is the depth of the water, here? We wouldn't want the ship to run aground. I will do my best to ensure that does not happen."
Not entirely sure myself, for now that's up to the GM, but hopefully we'll know soon :)
As he hauls the lead from the water he begins to pull the rope in long lengths between his outstretched arms and count the times he does this.
Each "length" between two outstretched arms is considered roughly approximately a "Fathom" (roughly 6 feet) and for every length he counts he is able to figure the depth between the waterline and the seabed.
Horatio waves at Rain as he tosses the lead again to keep an accurate count as they approach the coast.
"We're going to be lower in the water with all that freight, but with the moon being near full the tideline will be higher, so we should have it relatively easy coming in to a cultivated area," he says hopefully to her.
As he works, he seems to be thinking of something and he frowns as it crosses his mind.
"Speaking of cultivated areas - the main map indicates that the fort is in the south here, but on the north side by that big bay there was what looked like bridges and some roads... I don't think they're connected as there are no roads or bridges on the side of the island with the fort... Do you think they may have been made more recently than the fort, or maybe it's part of the ancient ruins of the folk that lived here before?" he asks, curious to know what the others might think.
Then he turns a gaze to the land.
"I don't know the plan, but I wouldn't mind getting close enough that the ship is out of range from any attacks from the fort before we launch a boat. What do you think?" he calls out to the others.

Horatio Flynn |

What do you want to do next?

"So far, so good - want to bring her in, then, Pilot-Major?" he calls out.

CO-GM: Currently Horatio is doing what he can to aid Rain with piloting the ship - he has ordered whatever NPC's are on the deck to man weapons as they approach if they're not already helping to sail.
If we could move the ship to roughly 200 feet from the island and drop anchor? Then, we'll take the boat in the rest of the way with an appropriate away team, but that might change when we're roughly 200 feet from the fort/coast (I'm assuming the fort is built on the coast, or at least fairly close)?
All of this assumes the fort doesn't have a set of docks or a wharf near it for ships to come in - but we'll know more about that when we get close.
That reminds me - what was Horus's results for his earlier Perception Check about the fort in general?
Finally, can we get an updated pic of the map where our ship will be anchored? Thank you so much!

DM Immortal |

the island drops away pretty steeply by all the shore and you can get within about 100 feet before being in danger of the ship running aground.
In the southern bay you can get to about the same distance. There looks like there was a dock near the fort but it has fallen mostly into the bay.
Not sure what you mean about an updated map, you have a map of the whole island. If you could clarify a little I can see if I can help a little better.
Horus's got the same info Dhaavan got. Did you send it to the fort or just into the air?

Horatio Flynn |

Just looking for a "close-up" view of the map in the area near the fort. Right now the fort looks like an small X - but if the map was "Zoomed in" so we could at least see how many feet square it is; if it has one level or two, that sort of thing...
At this point I think we'll go up to about 100 feet, then (as we have the depth) so we can use the ship to cover us if there is an enemy in the fort. However, I'm a bit confused via the docks. Where they meant to stretch 100 feet from the coast if they hadn't fallen into disrepair, or could we sail closer if we were using the docks?
In any case, once we're 100 feet from the shore we'll drop anchor, order the crew to cover us from the ship, then take a longboat to the beach to explore.
Side note regarding Horus: Horus wasn't getting too close to anything (on the other hand, Horus looks just like any other random bird flying around) - but his job was mainly to get a sense of what the fort was like. Is it's wall something like 8 feet in height, or more like 12; did it have a gate or more than one; do we see any place for siege guns, or any other artillery to be mounted... basically this would tie with the other option of just "zooming in the map" a bit is all.
Oh, and also where the ship would be on the map in relation to the fort would be good, too; just in case there are any enemies inside the fort at this point.

As the depth is continually determine under the guidance of Horatio Variel watches as Rain eases the Lady near the fort. The presence of a partial dock was promising as they would not have to rebuild the whole thing. After the fort was deemed safe perhaps that would be the first task of the civil engineer they acquired.
That was for later though as the fort needed the utmost attention. Not the most perceptive of the group Variel still tries to keep his eyes peeled for any signs of activities within.

Gotcha re: closer map. Wasn't sure where you were planning on anchoring so that's why I was confused. Will put a zoomed in section up in a bit.
Saw the close up of the fortress, but not a closer view of the bay itself; so I'm not sure what the "approach" will be like, only what the fortress itself looks like... If we need a map of the outside of the walls in case we get attacked, then we'll see how things roll :)
Horatio turns to Variel and gives him a grin and a nod -
"You're coming, too? Good," he says with a nod as he turns and asks one of the deckhands prepare to lower a longboat over the side of the ship.
"You got any notion on who you want in charge when we're gone?" he asks him, not sure who of the others will want to come, only that - as of now - he and Variel are interested in exploring the beach.
The others will certainly make their opinions known soon...
As he waits for an answer, he gives a shrill and whistles and nods his head to the gunners and they're now ready on the cannon to fire at any threat on the beach or the walls.
He waves his hand at some of the other gunners, and jerks his finger at the other siege weapons they have mounted. He then points to the fighting top and four sailors with longbows climb to it's position.
He then peers at the walls thoughtfully.
GM - how tall is the outer wall? Also, it looks like a tower in the back left corner? If so, how high is that tower?
Once I find out -
He turns back to Variel as he grabs his kit and slings it over his shoulder and then prepares to step into the boat.
"Well - you coming?" he says with a grim smile.

DM Immortal |

Outer wall is 15' high, several interior buildings are 20-30 feet and wooden, the tower looks ancient and of different design. It stands about 100 feet tall.

Horatio will try to gauge the difference with the tower regarding age and design and anything else, as well as anything he might gauge about the fortress (specifically the tower; but also looking for gun stanchions, or other places that an enemy can attack...

As he peers at the fortress, he turns back to Variel -
"Looks like the walls are roughly fifteen feet in height... We could scale them if we need to, but I think that the main gate is broken open..." he says slowly.
Not sure - but it does look that way on the map...
He swings himself into the boat and nods at Variel.
"Only way to be sure is to check it out..."
He waits a moment for Variel and the others to follow, but is completely ready to head out alone, if necessary.

DM Immortal |

No gun stanchions and you'd guess that the tower could possibly be thousands of years old but its hard to tell.

Dhaavan |

Dhaavan is at 100% right now, as he only had 3 days of crafting to do
He looks out over the dilapidated docs, and readies to take a boat to shore
Well, lets get started, take a look around, eh?
Jack sits atop Dhaavan's hat looking around

Horatio Flynn |

Well, lets get started, take a look around, eh?
Horatio nods his head at the suggestion.
"Aye," he says as he stares at the docks and the fort beyond.
Thinking a bit, he brings with him a long coil of rope and attaches a heavy hook to it, then hops in the boat with Dhaavan.
For now I'm assuming Rain is also coming (if she's not, I'm hoping the GM can ret-con that?). And I'm not sure about the others, though, and who is going to be left on the ship in charge.
Seeing that Dhaavan and Rain are also getting on the boat, Amen-set pauses and gives Rajah a long stare, then eventually shrugs her shoulders and follows Horatio into the boat.
When she is in the boat, Horatio will signal the men at winches to lower the boat.
He looks at Dhaavan -
"If the others want to hop in it's all good," he says by way of explanation for his desire to get the job done.
He indicated to Amen-set to ready her musket, then he grips the oars and begins to row...

Horatio will also use Perception to examine the walls for possible threats, sure that - if there are any errant corsairs behind the walls then they would have seen the ship long before the crew would have seen them and it was possible that they may be in ambush...

"The Blue Rajah" |

Everybody's going. With all due respect, Horatio, people don't join up on an AP to sit on a boat while everyone else moves on to the actual adventure as far as I'm concerned. Otherwise, why play?
Rajah gathers his things and joins the others.
Perception: 1d20 + 16 ⇒ (8) + 16 = 24

Rajah gathers his things and joins the others.
Horatio glances at Rajah and nods as he watches him hop in.
"Hey," he says to him as he pulls the oars, eyeing him curiously.
Amen-set turns and gives him a broad smile, then turns back to study the beach.
GM - once the boat reaches the shore Horatio intends to explore the docks; Amen-set will cover him with her weapon. Specifically, Horatio is trying to gauge the depth of the rock shelf under the ruins of the pier - how far the docks need to be extended, and how shallow the water is. That's why he brought the rope with the weight on it; to gauge the depth of the water.
Not sure if that study will require a Knowledge: Engineering check or a Craft: Carpentry roll, or even if any of them are needed.
Rajah - Actually, I'm not sure specifically who's coming right now; of course we'll all explore things as a team eventually, but as far as I know we're just going to explore the beach until we know there's no immediate threat from the fort. If there is, then the people on the ship can cover us with range weapons, that's why Horatio ordered the NPP's to cover the people who were comming.
Once we have the beachhead secure and we're sure that there's no enemy hiding behind the walls to ambush us, then I kind of assumed that we'd set a deck watch with orders for any possible emergency; as well as an appoint an NPC to be in charge of the ship while the officers are gone (I'm thinking Sandara, but it could also be that First Officer from the ship we rescued; I have a hunch she might be more skilled, on the other hand I trust Sandara more - but I'll find out who they pick soon).
The only reason I sent Horatio first instead of having him on the ship manning the siege weapons is because I wanted to check the docks specifically and try to figure out if we're going to be able to bring the ship in closer somewhere, or if we're only able to get goods and gear from the ship with boats.

Seijiro |

"Maybe Dhaavan can summon something that can get the skinny on the bay underwater, give us an idea of exactly how close we can get and the condition of the pilings too... perhaps the dock is repairable?"

Horatio Flynn |

"Maybe Dhaavan can summon something that can get the skinny on the bay underwater, give us an idea of exactly how close we can get and the condition of the pilings too... perhaps the dock is repairable?"
Horatio eyes widen in appreciation and he grins at the idea.
"Good thinking, Jiro-san," he says with a friendly nod.
"I forgot all about magic... But that's a damn fine idea..."
As he rows he thinks a bit about the ruined docks and his eyes scan the water.
"If a ship went down in these waters, it may have sunk and left all the cargo... Who knows... If Dhaavan summons an elemental, it may find some loot on the bottom of the harbor..." he says with a bit of enthusiasm.
He turns his head and looks around the bay thoughtfully, his eyes lifting up to the heights of the surrounding heights and studies them curiously.
"You know, this place seems like a good place to have a port," he muses thoughtfully as he continues to pull on the oars.
"Those hills there... they'd be a natural buffer for most heavy winds or storms... other than the opening," he says, pausing a little with his words as he continues to pull the oars "...the opening's not wide enough to get much wind or chop in... plus, there's a small island between the two points of entry... the western opening looks like maybe a quarter of a mile... the eastern opening is maybe half of a mile..."
His eyes narrow as he peers the opening to the bay.
"We mount a few guard towers on the little island between the two openings and this bay'd be almost impregnable..."

Dhaavan |

Dhaavan ties a quick casting and summons a water elemental and asks how far the man-made interruption runs, and if there are broken ships etc in the bay

You are able to make it to the beach without too much trouble in the longboat. Dhaavan, after summoning a creature from the elemental plane of water, sends it into the bay with a few gurgling intonations in Aquan to do some searching.
A few minutes later, as you are still getting things prepped to begin exploring, several hundred feet away in the water, it begins to roil and bubble as if something violent was occurring below the surface. Very quickly it goes still and silent again.

Horatio sees the bubbles and curses and cups his hands and calls out to the ship -
"Mind the waves; there's something in the water!" he yells to the crew on the ship manning the siege guns and draws his pistol.
Amen-set moves to the side of the boat which has been pulled up to the side of the surf and drops a knee behind it - Partial Cover and studies the water intently with the musket out.

Before leaving the ship Variel take a moment to activate the figurehead giving himself temporary hp for the coming exploration. 1d10 + 5 ⇒ (1) + 5 = 6
The crew knew what to do so he was not too worried about who would be in charge if Sandara could not at the moment.
The trip to the beach went quickly although Variel was waiting for something to attack from the fort.
While waiting for the summoned creature to return Variel keeps his eyes along the fort. It wasn't until Horatio shouts that he turns back to the bay where they had just come from. Get ready everyone! We don't know what is going on but assume something hostile. We may have to go into the water to face it. Anyone able to make us breath underwater or make us swim easily?
Variel casts shield as he pulls his cutlass enhancing it with keen and a further +1.

Seijiro |

Seijiro pulls out Brine's Sting and a potion of touch of the sea, ready to drink it if necessary.. He stares intently at the water... "Something gave Dhaavan's water elemental a run for its money... I wonder if it will come after us now, or if it's waiting to see what else will enter its domain.... Dhaavan, do you know or could you sense what attacked your creature?"

Rain Taneththir |

Rain took all her weapons and potions before she boarded the longboat and wearing her magical cloak, amulets amd rings of protection as well as the new circlet Dhaavan had made for her under Besmara's tricorne. Upon her ears shone Pierce's gift (Earrings of Serene Contortions). There were many threats to consider on their island and even an initial scouting trip meant they went in fully prepared. Neko hopped into the boat and took her place beside Rain.
We don't know what is going on but assume something hostile. We may have to go into the water to face it. Anyone able to make us breath underwater or make us swim easily?
Turning to Variel, she answered quietly, "I have four potions to help with swimming (Touch of the Sea) and a spell to help with climbing and swimming (Monkey Fish, lasts 4 mins)."
"Mind the waves; there's something in the water!" he yells to the crew on the ship manning the siege guns and draws his pistol.
She wondered if Flynn's yell would draw the attention of the island's creatures. Rain's eyes drew and settled on the place where the roiling and bubbling was just moment's ago and where calm water now showed. She was glad they travelled into shore on the longboat and the summoned creature had drawn the attention of whatever had caused the disquieted water.

Variel keeps his eyes on the water but answers both Jiro and Rain in turn. I doubt it will come at us while we are on land as it has as at a disadvantage in the water. We will have to go ferret it out I bet.
Those potions are a boon that is for sure. I have a set of the swimming ones myself should we need to use them. Truth be told I am more word about being pulled under water again like when we fought that naga before.

Seijiro |

"It would be handy if we had some water breathing, but I'm afraid that's out of my bailiwick and I have no potion for that... Something I should have thought of, I guess."

Horatio Flynn |

Variel keeps his eyes on the water but answers both Jiro and Rain in turn. I doubt it will come at us while we are on land as it has as at a disadvantage.
Horatio raises an eyebrow at this statement -
"Never mind us," he says in consternation as he stares at the water.
"What about our ship? Hell, I don't fancy being marooned on this place," he adds with a hard stare at the water.
...Truth be told I am more word about being pulled under water again like when we fought that naga before.
Horatio gives him a glance.
"Maybe - but I'm worried more about teeth... I'd wager it may be some sort of dinosaur, but now I'm wondering if it's some sort... dinosaur-esque shark..." he says with a tight voice.
Yay, Megaladon
Right now Horatio is more concerned with the ship. Those on land would likely be far safer than their ship.
Horatio uses Perception to study the water, but his focus is mainly on the water near the ship. If there is any issue in the water, he is far more worried about it attacking their vessel...

At this point he takes out a strange cartridge from the pouch on his belt and hands it over to Amen-set.
She takes a few moments and loads the cartridge into the musket and then waits to see what will happen next.

"The Blue Rajah" |

"Captain, Seijiro, I have just what you are looking for," he says with a wink. Calling upon the Dawnflower, Rajah grants each member of the party the ability to breathe water.
How many are there of us? 6 I think? Nope, after checking it's 7(including Amen-Set). So, 2.2 hours.

![]() |

You are right horatio that we may be able to handle ourselves and the crew is at its mercy. That is why we need to take it out before it can do any damage to us or them.
As he gets the water breathing from Rajah Variel nods appreciatively. Thanks Rajah. That is indeed what we needed just now. Now then anyone else have any spells they want to cast and prep before we go in and see about this dinosauresque shark thing.
Not sure about the rest of you but Variel is wanting to cast enlarge person and drink his potion of touch of the sea before jumping in the water

Seijiro |

Seijiro gets ready to drink his potion of touch of the sea as well... "Well, friends, shall we go for a walk?" He heads toward the water, though he doesn't enter it til all are ready. He peers into the depths trying to see what attacked the elemental.

Rain Taneththir |

Variel, why are you jumping in the water? Are you going to investigate the part of the bay where the bubbling occurred? I'm only asking because we all took to a longboat to shore and we're on the beach now, ready to explore.
