After Zane agreed to the dinner, Azarra gave up her plans of retiring early after a long day of traveling, and started wondering what she would wear to dinner.

Luckily, her Sleeves of Many Garments made such things less onerous. She stood in front of the mirror, trying to decide how to dress. A dark green gown that showed off the green in her hazel eyes? She liked it. Zane would like it, she thought. But certainly this wasn't a formal affair, was it? She sighed. And Zane likely just thought she was another random group member. And she didn't want the others to laugh.

... Perhaps just some comfortable everyday adventurer clothes then. ... Hmm, still the green though. The color of his eyes. She laughed at herself, knowing that she was daydreaming over nothing, and needed to focus on her work, and hopefully finding her parents. Even so, the green stayed. After all, this was joyful, and they, and Lliira would definitely approve. She just had to make sure not to do anything awkward in public. Green blouse, black pants and vest, hmmm... leather sandals. There. That would do. Comfortable and fun, and not unattractive. ... it would do.

She wrote an entry in her journal for the day, and then went down to eat with the group.

Palace of Birdsong| War for the crown maps

The newly minted Watchers of Dawn head out before meeting up again at the Inn for a meal. The Cracked Crown doesn't have a huge selection of food, but what it has is done very well and everyone has a heart meal.

Any ting happen that evening?: 1d100 ⇒ 65 No.

The very next morning, before dawn Zane wakes the company up to witness the glory of the day reborn. While there was grumbling from certain quarters at the early start, it proved to be worth it, for sky is lit up with colors ranging from fiery red to the subtlest salmon pink accented by the distant lavender of the mountains and the dark blue of the ocean. Soon the morning clouds burn away to reveal a sky of azure blue, it promises to be a lovely day. You always knew the dawn could be moving, but somehow watching the dawn today makes your soul soar.

Of course the party wasn't the only ones up early, there was excitement today for the particulars of the third reclamation where to be announced. It's true that Councillor von Urslingen had told you much of what was planned but he glossed over many details. It was decided to attend the town hall meeting scheduled for 7:45 sharp where the full council would would make their proclamation. The Watchers of Dawn, along with several other companies lined up and where among the first allowed into the town hall. As well as adventuring and mercenary companies a large number of interested citizens attended, this was one meeting not to be missed!

As great mummer of excitement rises as the hall fills up, getting louder and louder. After some time all five councilors file in order of rank. The first is the wizened elder, Ulrich Eberhard who is said to be over eighty summers but still hale. He walks upright albeit painfully with the aid of a staff. Behind him comes Werner von Urslingen still wearing the same armor as before. After him comes Bishop Braccio, a middle aged man looking resplendent in his robes. he sports prominently the holy symbol of Tymora a special face-up coin. After him is Councillor Elbert Earhart the treasurer and finally Councillor Porphyrys Cadorna a young rakish dilletante looking rather bored.

Once the council was seated upon the in a semi-circle on the stage, Councillor Eberhard thumped his staff on the floor screeching for, "Silence! The council of Phlan would address you. Silence!"

Silence descends and then in a rather curt tone he addresses the crowd, "Good morning glory seekers. As I'm sure most of you are aware, the threat of sea borne attack on our harbor is significant. The Orcs want to do it. The Zhents want to do it, half the Moonsea wants to do it!" A thin sliver of spittle flies as he works himself up into a rage, "THIS CANNOT BE ALLOWED!" Peering at the crowd he continues, "To prevent this, the Council wishes to reclaim and rebuild Sokol Keep! With this tower once again in operation, a garrison there could ensure that pirates were unable to intercept an arriving vessel. First however it must be cleansed. It is filled with undead creatures and slimy things that crawled up from the sea. A bounty of two thousand gold shall be granted to the company who does this!"

There are several gasps from the crowd at this revaluation.

Stomping his staff once, Eberhard screeches, "SILENCE!" Once again chastened the crowd falls silent. In a normal voice Eberhard continues, "Of course there is a complication. As part of its final defense, the cleric of Sokol Keep a man known as Ferran Martinez placed a mighty enchantment on the tower before he died. Ever since the tower has been defended by a corps of skeletons. Indeed, those who are slain within its walls and left there will join this undead watch, as skeletons, zombies or whatever. Bishop Braccio has divined a way of dealing with these which he will explain."

Bishop Braccio stands up to address the crowd. Unlike the stern head masterly voice of Councillor Eberhard, his voice is rich and pleasant. Addressing the crowd he says, "Thank you Councillor Eberhard, and thank you all for attending. Thanks to the grace of Tymora and the wise council of Friar Jenkins we have learned Martinez set a series of passwords that will allow passage without arousing these undead. Divinations reveal the records of which are lost somewhere on the island. Supposedly there is a golden horn that if sounded by one of true heart, will break the spell and release the unfortunate souls so they may depart onto the afterlife. We need somebody to find that horn and sound it. I'm afraid that all we know, so er good luck! The city of Phlan is counting on you."

Azarra listens, enthralled, to hear how they are going to deal with the undead scourge. A golden horn? Wow. What an adventure this was turning out to be.

Last Night, at Dinner:

Azarra slipped into the room after Zade had seated himself and sat down next to him. Nice shirt she said. Then she proceeded to compliment Ishta on what she was wearing as well, so as not to seem overeager or non-inclusive. And she did like what Ishta was wearing. She looked lovely. She wondered what the inn was serving tonight. She couldn't wait.

Banging his staff once more to call the meeting to order, Eberhard screeches, "So who will do this? Which companies dare to take on the undead?" Locking eyes with a powerful looking half-elf in the back he cries, "You! Silver Ravens will you do this?" He them looks towards a most disreputable pair of half orcs, "What about the vaunted Red Hand, do you have the guts to cut an enemy that doesn't bleed?"

For a moment a pregnant pause as the crowd holds its breath.

Perception DC 18:
While all eyes are on the front, you notice that towards the back Von Urslingen rolls his eyes at Eberhard's theatrics and Cardona smirks somewhat unpleasantly.

Helm has ordained my involvement here. There is a great evil that must not be allowed to be released. I am here to find out what it is, and to stop it.

Thankfully, Ser Armithia-Seendren of Helm's comment diverts the attention to other things.

"Well, it is good to know that, should we do this, we have Helm on our side." Ishta eats and drinks lightly, not wanting to have a heavy belly in the morning. "So... why don't we talk about us and what we can do? Would be nice to know about you guys." To support her proposition, Ishta talks first. "I myself am a user of the arcane. Dinner:
After settling on black trousers to go with his shirt, thinking leather would be inappropriate for an informal dinner, Zane runs his fingers through his sandy brown hair to give it a semblance of order. Straightening his shirt, he decides to tuck it in to emphasize his masculine physique, but leaves it a little loose so as to not seem obvious. He really should have declined the invitation for dinner and went to bed, especially since he always rose an hour before dawn to greet the new day and thank the Morninglord for the gift of another sunrise.

But the opportunity to get to know his new companions a bit more, particularly the half-elf, was too much of a temptation. Besides, that was a benefit of being youthful and having the fortitude to have a relatively sleepless night and still function at a high level. Resolved, he blew out a deep breath and headed to the dining area.

Seeing he was the second to arrive after the Helmite (go figure) he seated himself across from the gold elf, leaving room around him. He nods in greeting as the others enter, trying his best to act nonchalant as Azarra enters and sits next to him. Though he was skilled at reading people, he was rather unpracticed at masking himself, so his pleasure was evident as he looked over her.

At the compliment he smiles widely, "You also, my lady. The color suits you well." Perhaps he was a bit vain, but he had always been partial to green. He stares into her hazel eyes for a moment, mouth slightly open, before she turns away to offer Ishta a compliment. Flushing slightly, the priest turns away from Azarra to face the party as a whole.

As Ser Armithia speaks, the Dawnbringer gives the man his full attention, cocking his head but not really too surprised. As a paladin, the Helmite's goals were his god's goals. If Helm had decreed Ser Armithia cleanse the area, the man would do so or die trying. Zane understood...though he had a more personal reason for helping to clear Phlan, as well, Lathander smiled upon this undertaking.

"Lathander has also blessed this rebirth of Phlan, and I have been sent by the church to be its representative in this endeavor. I can call upon the Morninglord's blessings to heal my allies, help them be more effective in combat, and burn the undead from the face of Faerun with the power of the Sun." Of course, he wasn't half bad at swinging his mace, but he was sure this group had better.

Zane wakes early as he has done every morning for over ten years, saying a prayer to Lathander before going to wake his companions.

Perception: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (13) + 6 = 19

Zane listens with interest at the instructions given regarding bypassing the undead and the ultimate goal of the horn to vanquish them. The priest wasn't picky about how the undead menace was sorted out, as long as the victory was complete and all those poor souls were laid to rest.

Like Ishta the Cleric finds the theatrics of the Council meeting entertaining, though he could look through the smoke and mirrors and realize the show that was being put on. Von Urslingen's response certainly helped. Looking about at these other named companies, Zane waits a moment before calling out in his strong voice, "The Watchers of Dawn will answer your call, Councilor." The priest grins, knowing he is playing to the crowd but thoroughly enjoying himself.

At Dinner:

Azarra is careful not to roll her eyes at the Helm fanatic. He would surely be a good ally in battle. Best to just avoid a philosophical discussion with the law-over-all types though. Not that we should allow everyone to run off and hurt people. As long as they were good, laws made sense, but some laws were stupid, and most people could tell the difference. She cut her eyes to Zane. Now Lathander, he she could understand people worshipping, although of course Lliira was closer to her heart. Whoops, there you go, mooning over him again. Stop it already. Focus.

After Ishta introduces herself as a student of the Arcane, Azarra says I knew I liked you. I know a few spells myself, although I am sure I am not as good as you are. I am actually a singer by trade. ... That doesn't sounds very impressive, I know, but I'm also okay with a bow, and fairly good at diplomacy, if we end up needing that. Oh, and I have a little bit of healing. I'm sure not as much as <she gestures to the paladin and the cleric> but, you know, if we get into trouble, I might be able to help.

After Councillor Eberhard goaded different groups, Azarra leaned forward (she sat behind Zane in this particular meeting), and was about to whisper that he should volunteer, but then he did, without her prompting. Nice. :) He was perfect. Well, ... er... predictable, she mentally revised. Stop idealizing him.

Eberhard swivels round and gives Zane a piercing look, "Watchers of Dawn, who are they?"

Von Urslingen spoke up, "They're new, got their charter yesterday..."

Von Urslingen was about to say something more when Councillor Cardona sounding rudely spoke over him, "A new company eh? I say we test their mettle."

Sense Motive DC 20:
You don't think Councillor Cardona was doing you any favours, rather he was doing this because you might die in an amusing way and it would annoy the existing companies.

Sighing softly at being interrupted Von Urslingen gives Cardona a look before saying, "Seconded."

Braccio glanced at Von Urslingen who seems to nod imperceptibly. Braccio then stands up and says, "I vote aye."

At once the crowd start shouting in excitement.

Bang. Bang. Bang goes Eberhard's staff. "SILENCE!" he screams, "The ayes have it, motion carried. Congratulations Watchers of Dawn, the first shot at this is yours."

Several groups storm out at this point.

Sounding almost gleeful Cardona crows, "Oh Ho Ho! The Gilded Spear didn't like that and neither did the Red Hand, how delightful."

Eberhard glared at him and promptly walks out and with that the meeting was adjourned.

Dinner:
Barging in late, because everybody knows that being early for a stew means you're supposed to partake in the cooking of it, Kardas sits down after greeting the Helmite, Lathandrite and the two ladies with the slightest of nods.

He is dressed in a loose fitting dark blue tunic of which the trim and sleeves are embroided with Raumviran runes. Warm furs are draped over his shoulders and lazily, Kardas reclined in his chair. The man's bulky figure immediately becomes apparant as his thick as iron bar wrists come to rest on the table, one hand grasping for the nearest cup. Littered with scars, born from kisses and licks of sword and dagger, they paint a fascinating picture of Raumviran culture.

He listens to the conversation, not wanting to disrupt, and only when everyone is done introducing what he or she can do does he stir his voice for the first time. "I wield ancient Raumviran sword magic. Like Ishta, my talents are destruction. However, I am capable of creation through herbs, concoctions and alchemy."

Perhaps that last bit, the alchemy one, explains the man's somewhat unnatural strength and the sorry state of his hair.

Kardas silently witnesses the proceedings and, when his companions speak up, steps in behind them to add weight to their words. Whatever the other companies thought of them taking this mission, he cared not for their opinions, for it was they who had honored the warleader's call to arms.

She thanks Ishta for the kind words, and agrees that Diplomacy will probably come in handy. Surely the Councillors will be easy to work with though, don't you think? I've only met the one that gave us the charter--Urslingen I think? He seemed reasonable.

When Kardas showed up, late, she thought the scars made him look sort of scary. She wanted to ask him what "sword magic" was, but she decided not to, since she had already filled her embarrassment quota for the evening and didn't want to seem ignorant.

Azarra couldn't tell what the councillor's motives were, but he sure seemed strange. She thought back to her conversation with Ishta at dinner. She didn't know if her Diplomacy was a match for this level of politics, but she figured she'd better learn quickly.

No chief would ever let a bunch of upstarts challenge him and Phlan seemed no different. No matter, there were greater treasures to be found in here than political power.

"They reek of wealth and those who aren't old, seem entertained by the efforts of others to help win back their city. No,
they won't be easy to work with because whatever victories we will achieve will be claimed by them and whatever position of importance we might acquire will be tested by them by throwing their goons and flunkies at us. The only easy thing will be working for them. Best to accept the fact they'll suck our pockets dry and only grumble in private behind closed doors.
"

He then rolls his shoulders and drinks, seemingly unphased by the shocking negativity he just spat out at his companions. There was good food to be enjoyed and enjoy it Kardas did.

Dinner:
The Cleric listens to Ishta go over her skill set, as well, noting that a practicer of the arcane who could call destruction upon their foges was a worthy ally. The priest smiled briefly at the woman after her introductory statement, nodding at Azarra's praise for the arcanist before the half-elf launches into her own self analysis.

It sounded from the green-clad woman's words as though she was a jack-of-all-trades, or at least had an eclectic skill set. And a singer, as well. Zane had practiced with the choir at the church, and though he had some talent he knew he couldn't hope to make a living with it. As Azarra mentions her own modest healing capability, the young man can't help but smile, first thinking of the woman's healing touch on his future wounds, then letting his imagination take it forward a bit more. Not wanting to single the half-elf out for kind words, he smiles at her instead at the conclusion of her speech, his hands on his thighs as he waits for the next party member to proceed. Briefly he entertains the idea of casually placing a hand upon the half-elf's leg, but rejects it as being too forward.

As Kardas went over his background and training, Zane eyed the man's muscled forearms with approval. The man was obviously powerful enough to wield his blade with devastating effect. If he could combine magic with that effectively the Raumviran would make for a wonderful battle companion. At the man's glum words about the Council Zane stayed silent. It was probably like most gatherings of powerful men. Most just trying to do what was right in their eyes with a few bad seeds mixed in. Best to wait and see. He tips his glass to Kardas, smiling, before turning his attention to their moon elf companion after letting his eyes linger on the half-elf beside him for a few moments.

As the Dawnbringer finished his offer for the company to clear out Sokol Keep, he felt movement behind and turned his head to find Azarra's face close to his own. At first he thought she meant to rebuke him for volunteering without discussing it with the others first, but the look of satisfaction she wore quickly told him otherwise. Perhaps some encouragement had been meant? Gods, she was perfect...too bad he had jumped the gun and stolen her thunder. The young man had never been too patient or shy.

Sense Motive: 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (1) + 9 = 10

He glanced at her briefly before turning his attention to Cadorna as he begins to speak. Pleased that the young Councilor is approving of their company, Zane is quick to note the subtle look between Von Urslingen and the Tymoran. So the wily warrior essentially had two votes on the Council, it seemed. The priest offers a bow to the Councilors as they depart before turning to his companions.

"Looks like we get first crack at it, my friends. Too bad for these others there won't be a second!" The young cleric's eager look is hard to miss, his excitement palpable. "Does anyone need to get anything before we head out?"

I think we might want to do as the Councillor suggested and get some holy water, and anything else that is especially effective against undead. Any suggestions?

"With no meat nor any arteries to cut up, I suppose some blunt weaponry might be helpful. Like a warhammer, mace or club. I myself could do with a warhammer. There's also the option of bringing oil and alchemist fire, in case we encounter one that refuses to die through glorious combat."

Kardas then eyes Azarra, unabashedly checking out her physique so he may gauge her effectiveness in combat. "Have you ever used a mace before? It would serve you well. Perhaps blunt arrows if you use a bow?"

@GM: can we buy standard items (simple/martial weapons, things like holy water and alchemist fire) in Phlan for standard prices?

The elven Ranger eats light and speaks little. "I am a Ranger. I excel at hunting, the bow and the sword. The bow is what I have true talent for. I am here to fight the minions of Dragons and any other manner of evil we encounter".

He pauses and is silent again, at Kardas' statement Mal replies, "Indeed. Leave it to humans to charge gold from those who come to aid them in their hour of need. I know some of you are human but this irks me greatly, I mean no offense to any of you but I think Kardas has the right of it".

Re purchases Phlan has pretty much everything under 100gp available in the markets, no need to RP such purchases unless you want to. Note some purchases (drugs mostly) will get you in trouble with the watch. It has more expensive stuff too and as land gets reclaimed more and more exotic stuff will become available as the population grows and ancient forgotten caches are uncovered.

As the group starts to prepare for their journey Zane takes two small potions out of his pack, studying them a minute before walking over to Malstei. While the priest thought the antics of their gold elf companion amusing, he had developed a dislike for the moon elf and his prejudices in the short time they had spent together. Still, the Morninglord had set Zane down this path, and the ranger was here for a reason.

As he approached Mal, he held one of the potions out to the surly man. "A minor potion of healing. In case we get separated or I exhaust all my power and you find yourself injured. As to your question about holy water, there is more to it than just worship, and I am not schooled in such things." The cleric's tone is all business with this one, but hopefully his gift will be the path way to a warmer relationship.

Speaking of...the young man strides over to the singer, the other potion clutched in his hand. He smiles gently, pressing the potion into Azarra's hand. "Just in case." He stands there for a minute, furiously trying to think of something else to say. His thoughts are wispy, however, smoky tendrils fleeing as he tried to grasp them. Finally, after enough awkwardness, he turns to head off to their next stop after flashing her a grin.

Handing Malstei and Azarra each a potion of cure light. I have everything I think I need.

OK if anyone else needs to make any purchases, please do so in am earlier spoiler.

After the meeting was adjured, a runner in Phlan city livery came and found the Watchers of Dawn and asked them to follow her to the docks. The city had provided a rowboat for your use, ideally they wanted it back but the most important thing was to clear the keep on thorn island.

The island it self was only a very short distance away, less than a hundred yards but due to the toxic pollution afflicting the Stojanow river, the company had to wait several hours for the tide to come in. Eventually it was time to go and everyone clambered in. Fortunately the gods where kind - today the sea was calm. Actually rowing proved to be a bit of a farce because despite a lot of enthusiasm nobody knew what they where doing. Still you got there safely in the end, and drag the boat onto the beach! I'm just going to hand wave the crossing since when the water is clear and the winds low it's something anyone fit and healthy should be expected to do.

Thorn island itself was mostly barren and windswept, covered with a thin growth of reeds, rushes and salt grass. The keep itself proved to be a small fortified compound. Once it served as a lighthouse and watchtower over the Moonsea. Now, as with most buildings in Phlan, it is in serious disrepair. More so here than elsewhere, the walls are heavily covered with slimes, molds, and crusted dried salts. Few vines grow on it however, most species being unable to withstand the corrosive sea water that mists up from the shore.

The party walk up the ancient weed choked path to Fort Sohkol finding the forlorn structure to be eerily quiet.

Perception DC 15:

Right please arrange your characters on the map. In general I'd like to ask you draw arrows to indicate movement in combat. As you explore the fog of war effect will get lifted. Also if you'd like to thrash out a specific marching order for future reference that would be most helpful.

As Zane pressed the potion into her hand, she reached up with her other hand and placed it so that his hand was between hers. She looked up at him, and he grinned, and then turned away quickly, before her mind kicked in again and she lamely said I... uh... thank you! to his back. As the group lands on the desolate Thorn Island, the priest helps pull the boat on shore before surveying the dismal surrounding area. His bright yellow cloak that stirred faintly in the gentle breeze seemed out of place with the barren backdrop, but the priest shrugs it off. The new clergy of Lathander were not given the moniker Dawnbringer as a jest. Zane listens to Kardas chastise them for not paying attention to their surroundings, accepting the man's sharp words without rebuke. The priest had earned that, he supposed, though he still was having trouble keeping his eyes in front when they wanted to drift behind. The cleric kept his holy symbol in his left hand, hopefully ready to ward off the undead when they decided to come forth to protect the Keep from the hostiles that had long ago abandoned the sack of Phlan.

Zane follows the Helmite more closely, letting the elf lead where he might. And honestly, was there really a 'right' way, at this point? They had almost no leads to go on, so they might as well start exploring. The Dawnbringer feels a ray of warm sunshine bear down on his face for a moment, the brief feeling bringing a smile to his features.

Ser Armithia-Seendren:
Paladins get Detect Evil as an SLA. You actually have to stand still to concentrate for 3 rounds if you want to pin point whats' evil. If you used it the moment you landed you would have got a sense of diffuse evil surrounding the entire island. If you used it closer to the keep, you'd only get one round in detecting a slightly stronger aura of evil. Note due to various clarifications the PDT have made, it's assumed that using Detect Evil is noticeable and in this campaign like several others I play in it's generally regarded as rude in a social situation. Still it's a useful tool particularly out in the field.
