Chronicles of the Silver Rose Company

Game Master Patrick Curtin

This campaign is my attempt to play a canonical Planescape campaign using the updated Pathfinder ruleset. The game actually predates the release of Pathfinder, but we have managed to update as we have needed.

Male Half-elf (Planar) Ranger 5/Rogue 2/Plane Walker 1

"Aye. You're probably the blood for the job- if she is just a little girl, she'll probably rattle her bonebox to an elven woman more than... well, it's easier for her teh relate to you, right?"

She nodded, and made her way towards the spot Ekuur had said the Seed sensed the presence of the elven girl.

Female Human Cavalier 8 (Order of the Dragon)

"Unless she's a psychotic canniballistic dark elf. Or do those only exist where I'm from?"

She nodded, and made her way towards the spot Ekuur had said the Seed sensed the presence of the elven girl.

As Nari approaches the stand of trees, there is a rustling sound. A young elven girl, long auburn hair wrapped into a tight braid with silver wire emerges. The elf woman wears a set of soft-looking leather pants and a matching cropped top, exposing a tanned taut midriff. A brilliant gem is affixed to her brow by a narrow silver circlet. A hand rests on the head of a large silver-colored ferret in the crook of her arm. She speaks in a stern tone .

Elven

Spoiler:
"Come no further stranger"

Female catfolk sorceror 11

"Well she certainly does not look cannibalistic to me." Merle responds quietly to Rhiannon.

Elven ** spoiler omitted **

Nari suppressed a shudder. On of these years she was going to have to get past this unthinking fear of her own kind. She stopped and in spite of her fears looked the girl in the eye as she spoke.

Elven

Spoiler:

"My apologies if we trespass, my lady, but we were uncertain who was following us. We are here on an errand only and mean no harm to you and yours."

The young woman frowns and replies

Elven:

Spoiler:
"Where did you come from? How did you come to the Vale of Eagles? What manner of things follow you? Are those humans? And what is that giant walking cat? And the girl with the broken horns?"

Elven:

Spoiler:

"We come from Sigil by way of Yggdrasil. Some of my companions are human, and the others you speak of are a catfolk and a tiefling, though she is good of heart and seeks to rise above her heritage. There are many races in Sigil that all at least tolerate each other. These ones are my friends. We are the Silver Rose Company."
"I am afraid I am not at all familiar with the local geography. This is a different prime material plane than the one I was born on. We are here because there is a problem with Yggdrasil. An infection of some sort. We were sent here to find a priestess who holds an artifact that could cure that infection. We were charged with protecting something she would be willing to trade for it. We have no ill intentions towards you or your world. We only wish to help Yggdrasil and our friends who live there."

The woman walks out of the bushes. Her ferret looks at Nari with ice blue eyes, long black-furred ears cocked forward.

Elven:

Spoiler:
"Who is this priestess? What is Sigil? You came from the World Ash? I have never seen a traveller from the Outer Realms."

The woman seems wary, but less afraid. She cocks her head at Nari.

Elven:

Spoiler:
"Are you a Hanalindrim? Or are you one of the other races of the Eldar? Or are you a Maia from Aelfheim? You certainly don't seem to be a Svartalfardrim"

Elven: ** spoiler omitted **

*blink, blink*

Her amber eyes went wide with mild panic as she tried to figure out what any of those names meant.

Elven:

Spoiler:
"I...don't know what any of that means. I am simply a grey elf from Shalon. I...I was not well educated in the history of my kind. Or well treated by them. It's a long story, and not particularly relevant to now. Except that I have barely begun learning anything at all about the planes or about history."
"Yggdrasil is the World Ash. It is an astonishingly large tree that connects to all of the different planes. And if it sickens further, that sickness will start to spread to all of the different planes. The portal that brought us from Yggdrasil to here is high up in that tree we climbed down from."
"And Sigil is a city, a large magnificent city. They call it the city of doors because it's full of portals to other planes, and those portals are always moving and changing."
"As for what we seek....I think it was called the Crysagmir. Do you know where to find it?"

She watched the woman's face nervously, knowing she had taken a risk, but she hadn't sensed any hostility or danger from her so far.

Bribes always welcome

At Nari's words, the young woman looks about

Elven:

Spoiler:
"I have read of the World Ash. My grandmother has knowledge of the Outer Realms, but we do not travel to those places. I have not heard of Sigil, but I know that Aelfheim is where the Dancer of Dreams has her Crystal Palace. My grandmother is the keeper of the thing you seek. It would be better if you did not say its name aloud. There are those who desire it, and those who would do anything to possess it."

The woman steps to Nari, and extends her hand in greeting. Her silver-and-black-furred ferret scampers down her and vanishes into the underbrush. Nari can smell a clean scent of sun and grass coming off the woman. Although she looks young, Nari can tell by certain signs that she is not truly all that low in years.

Elven:

Spoiler:
"My name is Jenadiel, but you may call me Jena. I can take you to my grandmother at her temple in Hanalindali. Her name is Meralindiel, and she holds the Crysagmir."

The woman looks around at the rest of the party, and along down the hill.

Elven:

Spoiler:
"There has been pathsign that the Ice Spider and his minions have been here recently. We should hurry to Hanalindali. Can you call your friends? I will call mine."

female elan Psion (Kineticist) 10

Nari nodded.
Elven:

Spoiler:
"It is a pleasure to meet you, Jena. I am Naridre, though everyone just calls me Nari. I will go and gather my friends quickly so we can follow you."

Nari darts back to the rest of the group as quickly as she can.

"Her name is Jena and her grandmother is the priestess we were sent here to find. She has offered to lead us to her grandmother's temple in Hanalindali. But she wants us to hurry because she's seen path sign of an Ice Spider and its minions."
She took a breath and looked at Isaac since he was in charge now. "I didn't sense any harm in her. I might be wrong, but I believe we can trust her."
She hesitated and then decided to speak again. "I would ask that you all treat her with respect and not address her as a child. She is not a child. She appears younger than she is."

Female catfolk sorceror 11

"Okay" Merle nods before making her way towards Jena Seph in tow "I'm Merle and this is Seph pleased to meet you."

I am assuming in Planar Common?

The Elven woman cocks her head at Merle as she approaches. She turns to Nari when Merle talks

Elven:

Spoiler:
"Could you tell your feline friend that I do not speak whichever tongue she is speaking?"

Female catfolk sorceror 11

"She dosent understand what I'm saying does she?"

female Tiefling 12th level Duskblade

"Hey I'm Karrin Kind," the tiefling says in excellent elven, "I'm a duskblade, totally elven trained, but I haven't spent a lot of time with elves so if I make any faux pas just let me know. I mean I know somethings, I mean I wasn't raised in a cave or anything, I was actually raised in a human monastery, which is kind of a long story, but ya, I know humans better then elves."

Female catfolk sorceror 11

"Wait since when could you speak elven?????" Merle speaks as if her entire fragile world is shattering at this reveleation

female elan Psion (Kineticist) 10

Elven:

Spoiler:

"My feline friend was simply introducing herself. Her name is Merle. I will tell the others that you don't speak common. Luckily several of us speak elven."

The edges of her mouth quirked just a little as if she were suppressing a smile at Merle's outburst.

"Jena doesn't speak common, so those of you who don't speak elven will have to ask someone who does to translate for you if you need to speak with her."

Female catfolk sorceror 11

"But....but....but."

Male Cat

While Merle apparently has a mild breakdown and seeing that turning to his humanoid form wouldent help him communicate with her any easier (that and not wanting to reveal to much to a complete stranger) Seph simply jumps onto Nari's shoulder and offers his paw to shake.

Feline to Nari

Spoiler:
"I think Karrin just broke my sisters brain."

Male Human (Athasian) Cleric 10

The immediate threat passed, Ekuur finally begins to take in his surroundings. Having spent most of his life on blasted Athas, and then Sigil and the Plane of Fire, seeing truly green planes still leaves him in measure of amazement. And sadness ...

Male Half-elf (Planar) Ranger 5/Rogue 2/Plane Walker 1

Isaac bows to the elven woman.
Elven:

Spoiler:
"Well met, Jena. My name's Isaac and I lead the Silver Rose. It would be our pleasure if you would lead us to your grandmother's temple. If you're inclined, I would also be curious to learn of this 'Ice Spider' you speak of."

** spoiler omitted **

Nari put her hand over her mouth to stifle a giggle.

Feline:

Spoiler:

"It seems so. Merle gets a little hung up on appearances sometimes. Though in all fairness, she's been getting a lot better about that."

To Jena:
Elven:

Spoiler:
"The cat on my shoulder trying to say hello to you is called Seph."

female Tiefling 12th level Duskblade
Merle Barer wrote:

"Oh I can speak all sorts of languages," Karrin says, "Elven, Draconic, Infernal, Orcish," Karrin says counting her fingers as she lists her languages, "oh and common of course. I usually pick them up pretty easily, Torreen said it was cuz I was smart or something, but I think he was teasing me."

Female catfolk sorceror 11

"You can speak more languages than me?? but y-" Merle gets caught off by Seph hissing at her

Male Cat

Feline

Spoiler:
Don't even think of finishing that sentence Merle

female elan Psion (Kineticist) 10

"Merle?" she asked softly, gently taking Merle's arm, "Would you mind very much stepping over here? There's something I'd like to talk to you about and it seems that Isaac and Karrin are perfectly capable of handling translating duties for a bit."

She gently pulled a stunned Merle over to the edge of the group.
Feline:

Spoiler:
"I don't mean to pry, Merle, but given how strange Karrin has been acting lately I wasn't sure it was wise to allow you to insult her. It wasn't kind of you either way," she admonished. "You're better than that. I know you're surprised about Karrin being smarter than you thought, but I assure you, she's always been like that. I don't know when, but at some point in her life she got the idea stuck in her head that people would only like her if she played dumb. And she's quite good at it, but she's really very intelligent. You're just going to have to learn to look past appearances, my friend," she added with a reassuring smile.

Bribes always welcome

The young woman looks a bit discomfitted as the party crowds about her. She puts her two fingers in her mouth and blows a complex whistle out. A group of green-clad elven men with wicked-looking longbows emerge from the area behind them.

Elven:

Spoiler:
"These are my party. They will not harm you. I just want them to know all is well."

She turns to the party as introductions are made

Elven:

Spoiler:
"I am pleased to meet you Karrin, Issac, Merle, um.... Seph. I have never met an actual living human, they do not dwell on this world. I am pleased to make all of your acquaintence."

She turns to Issac and her solid-blue eyes look into his more mundane orbs

Elven:

Spoiler:
"The Ice Spider is one of the Morkarthau, the coterie of Morgadril the Winter Queen. He has been sighted recently in these hills, one reason I and my comrades were here."

She looks at the party and motions the four elves over. They approach. Three are silver-haired and green eyed, another is auburn-haired like Jena. Unlike Jena he has solid black eyes.

Elven:

Spoiler:
"This is Merric, Belan, and Calix."

The three silver-haired elves bow slightly, but their eyes remain watchful.

Elven:

Spoiler:
"This is my cousin, Maelrin."

The tall auburn-haired elf speaks, looking at the party with distaste.

Spoiler:
"Cousin, what is this? We should have let them go a bit farther and we could have apprehended them for questioning! How will we know now if they take coin from the Spider's claw?"

Jena looks hurt

Elven:

Spoiler:
"They discovered me, cousin, I had no choice but to reveal myself. What would you have me do?"

The tall elf frowns, and absently fingers his bow's riser

female elan Psion (Kineticist) 10

In spite of herself Nari flinches away as the other elves came forward, glad that she had moved to the edge of the group to speak to Merle.

Male Human (Athasian) Cleric 10

Ekuur comes back to his senses as the other elves come out of the brush. His arm reflexively moves towards his trikal, but he brings it back to his side after just touching it. He waits to see what kind of reaction Isaac and Karrin make.

Male Half-elf (Planar) Ranger 5/Rogue 2/Plane Walker 1

Isaac holds his hands foreward to show they remain empty.
Elven:

Spoiler:
"Please, calm yourself master Maelrin. We are strangers to your world, in case our garb, accents and appearance do not make that plain. I can assure you that not a copper coin on our person was even minted upon your plane of existence, much less by this 'Ice Spider' you speak of. We seek the temple of Hanalindali and the great priestess Meralindiel, for we are on an errand of importance and it is only Meralindiel that may aid us."

Diplomacy: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (2) + 6 = 8
Oof. Maybe I accidentally spoke goblin.

Female catfolk sorceror 11

"So uh whats going on then?" Merle asks as the place begins to get crowded.

female elan Psion (Kineticist) 10

"The auburn haired male is upset with his cousin, Jena, for not letting us get farther so they would have an excuse to question us. He believes that we are in the pay of this ice spider, whoever or whatever that is," Nari said in a loud whisper.

Female catfolk sorceror 11

"They cant question us now because....?"

Female Human Cavalier 8 (Order of the Dragon)

"Probably because now that introductions have been made, the rules of hospitality forbid it."

Elven:

"It is a pleasure to make your acquaintance. I am Rhiannon, newest member of the group. Should you have any questions about human's I'd be happy to oblige."

Human Wiz 12 (Evocation)

Still busy, but still semi-sane. Mostly. ;P

Justin tries, semi-successfully, to hide a smirk at Merle's reaction to the fact almost everyone in the party, except her, speaks elvish. Even Karrin. Having decided that Karrin was both a lot smarter, and more dangerous, than she looked, he relaxes visibly at Nari's swift interaction with Merle before the flabbergasted feline said something she would regret.

'Not that it ever stopped me,...' he muses as he bows to the elves and also addresses then in elvish. His pronunciation is nearly flawless, but his accent plainly reveals that he learned it from a non-native speaker.

Elvish:

Spoiler:

"Greetings to you all. I am Justin. I also assure you that we mean no harm, and that all is as Nari and Isaac have explained. We are merely here to trade for the item as we have said, and shall raise no spell or blade while here except in self-defense."

"I beg your pardon Master Maelrin, but I'm only recently begun Planar travel myself, and I'm afraid that I at least have no knowledge of either this Ice Spider or the Winter Queen you mention. Perhaps you would be so kind as to explain the current situation? We would hate to make a public faux-paux due to local politics."

Justin smiles pleasantly, looking at the elves almost expectantly.

Female catfolk sorceror 11

"You have got to be kidding me.....Am I the only person here who can't speak a word of elvish?" Merle sounds more than a little annoyed but with a slight hint of something else perhaps envy.

"I can teach you if you like. It's only fair since you and Seph taught me to speak feline. But I'm afraid it will take time. Still, you do have the advantage over humans of being able to hear the entire register, so you'll have much less of an accent. Probably."

Merle seems genuinly pleased at the offer but attempts to cover it up with bravado (poorly) "Oh well If you feel you can."

female Tiefling 12th level Duskblade

"It's really easy Merle," Karrin says, "and is a really beautiful language. Torreen used to read me poetry and stuff and so many words rhyme that it was like story telling only you could sing it. Really cool. It's not like Infernal, that's kind of an ugly language, I really hate speaking it cuz it's really hard to fit my thoughts into it. Like did you know that everything fits into a kind of structure and if you don't follow that structure you've got improper word use and stuff and things get confusing . . . though it's really good at legal stuff, like one of the monks tried to teach me some of the local laws so I wouldn't get into trouble or something? Well anyways it was really easy for me as long as I translated what was in that book into infernal first, but I think that's cuz I'm a natural speaker. Like I don't even remember learning to speak it but I sometimes think to myself in that language, epically when I'm pissed off at things, like stupid Isaac bossing everyone around like some kind of dictator, but that's usually it. I prefer thinking in common when I want to organize my thoughts because it allows me to think laterally, if you know what I mean? I guess Infernal is my angry language, but Orcish has way more curse words in it, if you want to insult someone, or get into a fight, and the other person speaks orcish, I really recommend Orcish! Really fun."

Female catfolk sorceror 11

Merle does her best to follow Karrins long rambling speach answering with a simple "Uh-huh" once Karrin finishes

Male Half-elf (Planar) Ranger 5/Rogue 2/Plane Walker 1

Isaac quickly rounds on the ladies, for once actually barking orders.
"Cutters! Bar that! Rattle yer boneboxes when we ain't on sodding business!"

More smoothly, he returns to the party's hosts.
Elven:

Spoiler:
"My apologies- my people are rather excited by your land. We're not accustomed to such beautiful surroundings."

Female catfolk sorceror 11

Merle begins to hiss at Isaac but realising that doing it in front of the heavly armed elves might be interpreted the wrong way quikly stops herself.

female elan Psion (Kineticist) 10

Nari's eyes go wide with shock and she seems to shrink into herself even more than usual, literally cringing away from the harsh words.

Male Cat

Seph seeing Nari's reaction to Isaac hisses at him briefly.

Bribes always welcome

Anyone got a babble fish for Merle? If she is the only one who can't speak Elvish, I'm going to unspoiler the rest of the speech, and trust that Nari or someone is translating for her. I will update later this day when I have a bit more time

Male Half-elf (Planar) Ranger 5/Rogue 2/Plane Walker 1

Ekuur and Merle are the only ones I think.

Bribes always welcome

Ekuur:

Spoiler:
It is most odd, but you thought that the elves had been speaking Planar Common before it was pointed out that they were speaking Elven. Somehow, you are understanding everything they say.

Bribes always welcome

Diplomacy: 1d20+6
Oof. Maybe I accidentally spoke goblin.

Remember Issac, 'firendiel no turgaran' means 'we are strangers to your world' in Elvish where you said 'firendiol no turmagan' which translates into 'You mother was a strumpet' =D Ahh linguist humor ..

Maelrin looks askance at Issac

"What ARE you? You look vaguely Hanalindrim, but thick. Are you some sort of construct?"

He turns to Nari

"Is this person your servant? Why does he address me, a noble of House Garadian like a common churl?"

Bribes always welcome

Justin, and anyone directly addressing the elves make me a diplomacy roll please
