Chronicles of the Silver Rose Company

Game Master Patrick Curtin

This campaign is my attempt to play a canonical Planescape campaign using the updated Pathfinder ruleset. The game actually predates the release of Pathfinder, but we have managed to update as we have needed.

Female catfolk sorceror 11

Merle appears at the doorway just as the others finish restraining Marlus a somewhat shellshocked kind of expression on her face "Oh uh yes I'll get one Seph you wait here" she responds to Isaac before heading out to fetch the nearest constable

male Catfolk

Seph barely gives the faintest hint of a nod at Merle's command and procedes over to Nari in an almost Zombie like state. It is quite clear at even the briefest of glances that he has been crying and he looks on the verge of starting again.

Bribes always welcome

"Oi!", Isaac shouts around the restrained woman,"One o' you cutters want teh flag down a constable? Veridis, where d'ye want her?"

Veridis hollers up

"Just hold her steady!"

Merle finds a squad of the local watch and informs them of the situation, they come running

Marlus screeches

"You have killed my love! You have brought evil to this place! I shall burn you and it until all is clean!"

Suddenly from the back hallway a faint voice can be heard.

"M...m...marlus? Are you there? I am so thirsty .."

The haggard form of Roth F'Tsar leans against the carven wall. He looks very sick, but his eyes focus on the struggling pile. Marlus calms immediately

"Roth? But, I saw you ...you were.."

She dissolves into tears as the constabulary bursts in and begins running for the balcony. Roth teeters forwards and collapses by his weeping companion. They hug, the party backing off tactfully

The guards confer with Veridis, who has also run up the balcony

"Well, this is an odd thing then." The watch captain says, scratching his noggin.

Male Half-elf (Planar) Ranger 5/Rogue 2/Plane Walker 1

Isaac exchanges a glance with his comrades. He's clearly skeptical of this sudden recovery.
Checking out Roth to see if there's anything odd about him.
Perception: 1d20 + 15 ⇒ (5) + 15 = 20 +2 if vs. undead.
Sense Motive: 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (17) + 1 = 18 Also +2 if it's vs. the undead.

"I know a sleeper hold that I saw someone in the pits use once," Karrin says, trying to fill the silence that follows, "I think I could have knocked her out without hurting her. I was thinking that I might get the chance to use it . . ."

male Catfolk

Seph at this point not knowing the meaning of the word tactfull rushes up next to Roth any thoughts of being upset having completly evaporated.

"Are you okay? Did the cloud thing leave you alone?"

Female catfolk sorceror 11

Merle walks up next to Karrin more than a little baffled but relived at what is going on at hearing Karrins comment Merle sighs and rolls her eyes a bit before whispering To Karrin

"Maybe it would be best not to tell the formerly violent woman about how you were thinking of putting her in a sleeper hold?"

female elan Psion (Kineticist) 10

While everyone else is occupied, and feeling a good deal of relief over the recovery of Roth F'Tsar, Nari begins to look for her psicrystal. The stress of housing two personalities in one body is beginning to be a bit fraying.

Patrick had said that we'd backed away after the two hugged

so Karrin says this after they've backed away, as I said mainly to fill the silence.

Although if Merle still points out the potential error of announcing one's move in advance to a potential opponent Karrin happily points out:

"That's why it's a finishing move!" Karrin says, "people know you got it in your arsenal and they try to avoid it and so the crowd goes nuts when you lay it on. Kind of like in a play where something is shown or revealed real early and then if comes into play later in the play. That's really fun because if you were paying attention you knew what was coming."

Backed away does not mean out of earshot

Merle resists the urge to facepalm not sure if Karrin has missed the point or is just trying to annoy her.

Human Wiz 12 (Evocation)

Backing off with the others, Justin is amazed and pleased to see F'Tsar up and alive, and cannot help but smirk at the sudden reversal in the woman's attitude. He listens to Karrin and Merle and tactfully turns his back to them. Safely facing away, he rolls his eyes, fairly certain that Karrin is having fun with Merle. But sometimes, he just, can't, tell.

He motions Veridis and the constable over and confers with them in hushed tones, so as not to mar the celebration/reunion going on nearby.

"What we have here is an intrusion by a creature who, probably, lives partially or entirely on the Ethereal or Astral plane. Wherever it's origin, it literally latches onto an intelligent being and moves in. It's not like a possession, where it can control the person and cause him to do things like spy or sabotage. Instead it moves into your mind and sets up shop. It enjoys causing you pain and suffering, probably feeding off of those negative emotions as we would a fine meal. It is these mental attacks that cause the persons it inhabits to exhibit extreme emotional and self-destructive behavior. When it has caused it's host so much anguish that it literally loses it's will to live, it moves on to it's next victim. Some people are simply stronger-willed than others, and last longer. Now I confess that I'm still lacking for a few details, and am making a few, logical, leaps of deduction. But I feel fairly certain that once we get a chance to discuss what Merle, Seph and Nari can tell us about the creature they saw and fought, we can probably identify it and help you prepare against further attacks by it or others of its ilk."

"I apologize for the abruptness of our actions, and for any insult or pain we may have caused. BUT we were trying to help, and once the creature realized that we had a mind-witch with us, it began trying to kill F'Tsar in earnest. It didn't give us time to be subtle, or polite." Justin points out politely, but emphatically.

"Now. I recommend that the couple be isolated for a time, and subject to Protection from Evil spells. As you are no doubt aware, the enchantment is proof against mental intrusion. However, if applied AFTER the mental intrusion takes place it merely aids a person in throwing off its effects. The stronger willed a person is, the easier is is to resist a mental attack. I have no doubt that if it tried to jump into Marlus, it's in for quite a surprise." Justin says straight-faced.

female elan Psion (Kineticist) 10

Nari gives a muffled cry and picks up something from the floor just inside the doorway of F'Tsar's room.

I'm assuming she can make her way there reasonably unobserved given the fuss happening out in the hall.

She quietly steps back into the hall clutching something tightly in her hands and looking a bit pale.

DM:

Spoiler:
I hope you don't mind that I sort of just ran with this, but I realized that Nari and the crystal were integrated when she was attacked, which meant the crystal took the same damage. So it's kinda broken. No long term harm. She can make a new one. She may be a little twitchy until she does though. Just trying to make sure that actions have their natural consequences.

Male Human (Athasian) Cleric 10

Ekuur, although a bit unhappy with having to extinguish the cleansing flames with a semi-opposed element, realizes this was not the appropriate time or place for them. At the appearance of the stricken man, Ekuur will rush over and begin to check him over. If he still requires any healing, Ekuur will lose a spell or two to cast an appropriate cure.

Human Inquisitor 6

For his part, Quinn merely watches the couple embrace and quietly intones a prayer to Boccob. Most would call this a miracle, but one does not reach his rank in the church by believing without proof...

Casting Detect Thoughts on the happy couple.

"I also know a move called the Pile Driver," Karrin says, with a straight face, "and a Suplex and a Back Breaker, but I'd hardly think of using those on an old lady. Well not just any old lady, there are a couple old bitties that could stand to be given a pile driver or two, but not some old confused lady. Besides those can cause a bit more trauma. A sleeper would just put you to sleep no problem. Want me to show you?"

Female catfolk sorceror 11

"Once we get back to Sigil you can show me all the Finishing moves you want." Merle responds not really fully paying attention.

female Tiefling 12th level Duskblade

"Naw, it's totally easy, check it out!" Karrin says quickly scanning the room before noting Justin's vulnerable unsuspecting back. Karrin, never to look a gift horse in the mouth, suddenly lungs out at poor Justin:

Surprise round!

CMB: 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (9) + 9 = 18

"you just put arm around the neck like this, and the other goes around the back, and then all I need to do is add a little pressure and boom, out like a light" Karrin says as she manhandles Justin, "And the best part is that there's no possible escape!"

"Oh I see hmm perhaps you should let Justin go though you can demonstrate what a piledriver is on him later." Merle appears to be paying much more attention now with a look akin to amusment on her face.

female Tiefling 12th level Duskblade

"Never a good idea to drop a wizard on his head," Karrin says to Merle, "unless that wizard works for the competition."

Male Half-elf (Planar) Ranger 5/Rogue 2/Plane Walker 1

"Whatever you do, cutter, don't hit him in the kidneys when no one's looking. Messes up the works fer days, believe me."

female Tiefling 12th level Duskblade

"Oh that's right," Karrin says, "kidney punches are great for roughing folks up, it usually doesn't show but they'll be peeing blood for weeks afterwords! Thanks for reminding me Isaac."

Human Wiz 12 (Evocation)

CMD=16,... Snag! Wrap! Choke!

"GAck! Gurchle! Gurckle!" Justin grunts from inside Karrin's unexpected embrace.

It's hard to tell who is more surprised by Karrin's impromptu demonstration, Justin, or Veridis and the constable he was talking to.

At the mention of piledrivers, dropping wizards on their heads, and kidney punches and their unpleasant side effects, Justin's eyes widen even more, and he redoubles his efforts to escape. (Which consists mostly of flailing and beating at Karrin's muscular arms feebly.)

"Gurckle! Gurckle!,..." Justin repeats, his face taking on a distinctive purple tinge,...

Spoiler:

Justin is TRYING to say "Uncle! Uncle!" ;)

female Tiefling 12th level Duskblade

"Well normally this is where the opponent would go limp or tap out but seeing as Justin isn't really my opponent," Karrin says as she releases her hold, "he's free to go and see, no harm no foul. The colour will return to normal pretty soon."

"This is the best part about being a mercenary, you know besides the money and being able to help folks, teaching folks and learning things is great. So now lets get down to business and hunt this thing down. Before it attacks someone else."

female elan Psion (Kineticist) 10

"I won't be able to help you if it's infested someone else's mind. Well, for starters I've expended most of my mental abilities, at least until I've had some time to rest and recover. And I won't be able to intitiate telepathic contact for a...while. And I'll need to find some rocks of the appropriate size and type, and at least a full uninterrupted day first."

"So the best bet is to find this thing's lair, preferably its corporeal body if it has one. And let Karrin beat the snot out of it," she added with a small smile.

She sighed. "At least I've still got my bow."
"As long as I can keep track of who's shooting it," she muttered under her breath.

Female Human Cavalier 8 (Order of the Dragon)

Rhiannon looks at Karrin with the expression of someone entering a room to find its inhabitants chewing on the furniture while ignoring the banquet laid out on the table.

"Remind me again which one of you is the team leader?"She mutters to Justin, checking to see that the mage is still breathing properly.

female Tiefling 12th level Duskblade

"Hmmmm, good question Rhiannon," Karrin says, "I'm not sure if we picked a leader. I guess maybe that's something we should do? I mean we need to have some order and stuff, and it'd stop people from running off and doing their own thing. Like Merle telling me choke Justin. If we had a good leader there's no way they'd let her get away with that stuff."

Karrin gives Merle a disapproving glance.

Male Half-elf (Planar) Ranger 5/Rogue 2/Plane Walker 1

Isaac shrugs.
"I try to take the lead, cutter, but I never been 'leader' official-like. Reckon that's a task akin teh herdin' slaadi with our crew. I just been out on the Wheel longest, if yeh ken it."
He chuckles, mostly to himself.
"I sodding lead the Silver Rose as much as Factol Karan leads the Chaosmen..."
Isaac looks around at all the Clueless.
"Well... if yeh were up on yer Cage politics, that was a particularly truncheoned observation."

Female catfolk sorceror 11

Merle is only able to come up with a somewhat indignant "What?" at Karrins comments "Look all this talk is all well and good but we still need to find the thing don't we?" She asks trying to change the subject

Karrin smiles, "Adda boy Issac, the tiefling says as she slaps him no the back, "You'll do us proud I'm sure!"

Naturally Karrin is secretly relieved that Isaac stepped up. When Rhiannon posed the question Karrin secretly feared that someone would suggest her. Being leader was a lot of responsibility, one needed to lead by example, and Karrin knew that right now she was a terrible example. Taking control of the team would mean straightening up and flying right or something like that, no more doing what ever you wanted whenever you wanted, no more letting everyone do whatever they wanted, being in charge meant thinking for others. Karrin had trouble thinking for herself sometimes. Well not thinking, she was good at thinking, but staying on topic was a problem. This wasn't a problem for an adviser or second in command, they needed to see the big picture, and Karrin could see the big picture. Heck some people thought that just looking at a picture was enough, but understanding the picture was also important, and knowing stuff that wasn't even in the picture was also important sometimes. For example one of the treasures that the brothers had at the monastery was a portrait of Saint Ivs, painted by one of the masters, Richard Roo. What Karrin couldn't understand was how a painter, even someone who was called a master, could have known what Ivs looked like some two hundred years after her death. But then in book about the famous painters Karrin had read that Roo had used prostitutes as his models. The portrait looked so life like that Karrin knew that Ivs had been substituted with a whore, but what better model for a god of forgiveness then turning a prostitute into a saint. When Karrin had pointed this out to brother Quin he had gotten mad for some reason.

Still Isaac didn't seem like the sort to get angry with observations. Isaac seemed like the mercs she had worked with when she first stumbled into the World Serpent Inn and Sigal, but he seemed more upright and decent. Idealistic she'd say. Isaac reminded her a bit of Torreen, not in the looks department, Isaac wasn't deformed or anything, but he couldn't compare with Torreen. That was like comparing the portrait of Saint Ivs with one of Karrin's drawings. Sure Kron had made a big deal about her drawings but even the six year Karrin knew she wasn't as good as Roo. Isaac was like one of Karrin's drawings. Someone would think he was handsome but he was no Torreen.

Still there was more to a man then their looks, not a lot more, but Karrin did like men to share her ideals. Isaac did that. He seemed to be a good person. It was a shame that he was only average looking though . . . still he did have some something, it had to be the elven features. Too bad he seemed to be about as strong as Torreen as well. It was awkward making love to someone who was weaker then herself. Karrin had read many romance novels and being gripped in strong arms and being pulled against a powerful chest . . . well this seemed to be a common theme, but these things were lacking sadly in Karrin's limited experience. Unfortunately powerful arms always seemed to come with those bulgy lumpy muscles. Why couldn't elves come with strong gripy arms in the slender handsome model?

Things had worked out well though, Karrin had to admit, and with very little manipulation on her part. People liked Isaac so it was easy to get everyone to accept him. If anyone challenged him then Karrin would need to . . .

Karrin's line of thought stalled as she realized that Isaac was saying something else:

Isaac wrote:

Isaac looks around at all the Clueless.

"I bet it is!" Karrin says with a laugh, "That Factol guy is totally just a figurehead, herding cats and taking all the blame. What a rube. What were you saying about him again?"

female elan Psion (Kineticist) 10

Nari smiled a little at her friend's inability to follow a conversation without making several hops skips and jumps along the way.

She reached out and tapped Isaac's shoulder to get his attention.
"This may not be the best time, oh fearless leader," she said quietly, eyes twinkling with amusement, "but when you have a minute I need to talk to you."

Female Human Cavalier 8 (Order of the Dragon)

"Oh I'm definitely coming, I simply don't need to go to the stables, I already have a mount."

"Aye, true enough cutter. We should cool our heels long enough to resupply and make sure Master F'Tsar is convo-, err, convalescing proper-like then give this Warpwood a scan."

"Another brew or three wouldn't hurt, either, but I reckon we won't have time fer that."

"I reckon things are fine at the moment if yeh tumble teh lannin' me the Chant. Ekuur, Quinn and Justin can give our "patient" a scan, eh? Let's rattle our boneboxes outside 'fore the smoke makes me homesick fer the Foundry."

Human Wiz 12 (Evocation)

True to Karrin's word, Justin's color starts resembling something other than an eggplant after a few moments. He rubs his throat and vacillates between glaring at the tiefling, and looking afraid that she might decide to do another demonstration.

He grins mirthlessly at Isaac as it appears that he has been voted 'team leader', and claps him on the shoulder.

"Congratulations. Couldn't happen to a better man." He manages to croak out in an almost normal voice.

His eyes plainly if silently say 'Better you than me.'
Or perhaps it's, 'SUCKER!'.

Justin waves at Isaac and Nari as if waving away the lingering smoke.

"Go ahead. We got it. Just be a few moments." He coughs, then returns to Veridis and the Constable, still standing mouths agape like a dumbstruck fish.

"Karrin's a big believer in live demonstrations." He tells them as if it's a common occurrence. "And she can't keep her hands off me." He adds straight-faced.

"Now, briefly, what I'm saying is until we get the chance to talk to Nari, we're not sure this thing is gone. You need to keep the happy couple isolated if possible, and have priests check them regularly with detect evil, and protection from evil charms. That way perhaps you will be able to tell if it's still here, or tried to jump to her, and help her fight it off if it has. Meanwhile, as my companions said, we're going to try and find this things corporeal form, if it has one, and let Karrin get some exercise." He says with a grin.

Nari nods gratefully and follows Isaac outside, away from the crowd of people.

She hesitates for a minute, not quite sure where to start, before simply holding out her hand. Resting on her palm was the shard of crystal that had formerly housed half of her psyche. It was cracked straight down the center, making it look oddly misshapen.

"I figured someone needed to know, and you're the responsible one. I should be alright for a day or two. But it's a bit crowded in my head right now, and I'm not sure how well I'll hold up as time goes on. The two of me were already at odds over who was going to be in control, and that was when we weren't both trying to be in the same space at the same time. If I do go completely round the bend, I need you to make sure I get back to the Gatehouse. Tell them about my crystal. Hopefully they'll be able to put me back to rights."

"Of course, there's always the chance that this could help. Sort of the it has to get worse to get better idea. I guess only time will tell."

"I can fix it anywhere. But I need a new crystal of the appropriate size and shape and an uninterrupted day to make it into a new psicrystal. Since I don't currently have either the rock or the time, it's probably going to have to wait until we get back to the Cage."

"As for your question, yes, of course she's dangerous. She has to be. She's everything I needed to be to survive - slavery, the forest, the streets, all of it. For her fear is a weapon to be wielded against her enemies. And in the right cause, at the right time, that can be extremely valuable. In point of fact, I need her. But I also can't let her have too much freedom. I live in constant fear of how easy it would be for her to ride down that slippery slope and end up just like...him. One of my teacher's friends, well, she was an unpleasant woman, but she often played on that fear. Every time I took even the most slightly questionable action she would sneer at me and say, 'blood will tell'. I can't let that happen.....But as for going berserk? No, I don't believe so."

"I'm not trying to keep this a secret, but I'd also rather not make a fuss of it if I don't have to. I just thought it was more responsible to tell someone so I don't end up going off the deep end with no one knowing why."

Male Half-elf (Planar) Ranger 5/Rogue 2/Plane Walker 1

Isaac nods, scratching his chin.
"Aye, fair enough. I'll keep an eye on yeh if ye start teh slide, thanks fer the Chant. Mayhap we oughtta find a way teh check in with Renkar at the Rose- been Out of Town fer a while and there's been a change to the roster. And maybe he and Hanali can look fer a crystal ye can use..."

"Anyhow, gimme the Dark of it, Nari: ye reckon this business with the possessor is over? I find it hard teh believe F'Tsar would suddenly come 'round again right as rain after what ye said happened in his brainbox. Problem bein' if Crux's folk believe he's on the mend, this may spread 'fore we get back. I don't tumble teh givin' this place the laugh with the job half done."

female Tiefling 12th level Duskblade

"Don't worry Isaac," Karrin says, "We got plenty of people to blame before you. Ekuur for example doesn't even speak the language too well. I can make this a smooth ride for you. You look after me and I'll look after you, if you know what I'm saying. By the way thanks for giving me an Nari first watch tonight."

Female catfolk sorceror 11

Merle finds herself trying not to grind her teeth at Karrin's antics "Are we heading out or not?" In the back of her head her only thought is How come I'm not the one in charge?.

Male Half-elf (Planar) Ranger 5/Rogue 2/Plane Walker 1

"Bar that, Karrin. If I'm in charge yer on middle watch. I'd be a right berk teh put our only basher with dark sight on any other shift than the right darkest. I won't split ye up, though, if ye'd rather pull it with Nari."

Back in the guildhall Isaac crosses his arms.
"We give this place the laugh soon as Ekuur and Quinn give Ser F'Tsar a clean bill o' health and tell us that creature ain't hangin' about so's they can take ol' Justin's advice. Then I reckon we get word out to Renkar if possible since Swire, Drazek and Bethany gave us the laugh. Then we reconnoiter this Warpwood. That's what I think."

"I'm not sure. It doesn't seem over. The creature was hurt and badly. It's possible that he let go of Roth F'Tsar because he no longer had the strength to keep a hold of him. But it wasn't destroyed. You're right to be cautious. Unfortunately until I fix my psicrystal I can't initiate telepathic contact with anything. It's easier without a body. Telepathy just isn't my forte. Still, that won't matter if we can find the source of this thing and destroy it."

Karrin smiles. First test passed.

Male Human (Athasian) Cleric 10

As mentioned above, Ekuur will thoroughly check F'Tsar over, looking for signs of lingering possession. He will lose a spell or two to cast some cure spells, as needed. He'll also cast lesser restoration if he thinks it will do any good.

Isaac exchanges a glance with his comrades. He's clearly skeptical of this sudden recovery.

Checking out Roth to see if there's anything odd about him.
Perception: 1d20+15 +2 if vs. undead.
Sense Motive: 1d20+1 Also +2 if it's vs. the undead.

Issac:

Spoiler:
Roth seems alive, if weakened. He seems genuinely happy to see Marlus. He is breathing, and his skin has a living pallor to it, so if he is undead he is doing a really good job of hiding it

It's fine, that works :)
