Chronicles of the Silver Rose Company

Game Master Patrick Curtin

This campaign is my attempt to play a canonical Planescape campaign using the updated Pathfinder ruleset. The game actually predates the release of Pathfinder, but we have managed to update as we have needed.

Yes, at the other end of the demiplane

Human Wiz 12 (Evocation)

Yes, going to explore the other door on the landing. The one I did NOT open because I went to the sound of fighting. ;)

"Good work Phaumee!" Justin grins at the sight of the large rodent tying up the large lizard.

"You there! What is your name? And what is behind the other door on this landing?" He demands of the prisoner, pointing his thumb at the door behind him.

Yes, at the other end of the demiplane

OK, upon futher research, it looks like the demiplane is 800 yards (2400 feet, or slightly under 1/2 mile) in diameter. The tower is roughly centered in the middle of the demiplane. Thus I am calling it 1200 feet from tower to portal. The fleeing khaatsa has 920 feet on Merle from when she emerges from the tower. Thus within three rounds at its current speed it will attain the portal. So, doing some math:

  • Rd One: K 920+120=1040 M 160
  • Rd two K=1040+120=1160 M 160+160=320
  • Rd Three: K 1160+120=Portal M 320+160=480
  • Distance between: 1200-480=720 ft.

Female catfolk sorceror 11

Does it have to take time to activate the portal or can it jump right through?

Karrin wipes her mouth clean and looks at the massive puddle of sick.

"Wow that was messy," she says, "that's was a lot of food."

Shes seems somewhat sad at the loss though, and for a brief moment she conciders eating something more to fill the space, but with the nausea still in her system she thinks against it.

"Whoever did that is going to pay," Karrin mutters, "taking slaves is one thing but no one makes me loose a meal . . ."

Aw, I wish that Justin had run outside! He has a scroll of 'Expeditious Retreat' that would have helped Merle even the odds! ;P

It is a continuously-open one way portal. Phaumee had mentioned that it brings the porter back to the entry point they had entered at. Justin had also perceived this when he was riding Goldenwing towards the tower initially:

Dungeon Monkey 9/23/10 wrote:
Justin can see an open portal at the far side of this demiplane, a small silvery wink at the side of the misty blackness that bounds the khaasta's lair. He can also see several khaasta still manning the parapets of the tall tower.

Justin sniffs, and face palms himself at the smell of smoke entering.

"Perfect. Phaumee, watch him, don't let him move until I get back! Karrin, Draz, Beth! If your done decorating the floor I need you up here!" He shouts as he pulls out a scroll with one hand and a vial with the other.

"Follow me up the stairs! There's a large room with a lot of plants, and a throne. I think there's still some 'pets' alive up there, so cover my back! I'm going to find this Toilmaster's room before the tower burns down around us!" Justin shouts, then drinks his potion in one gulp, potion of Cure Medium Wounds then tosses the vial over his shoulder and reads his scroll. Expeditious Retreat

The letters flare briefly into flame, leaving the parchment untouched, as the magic is consumed and takes effect. Justin turns and runs back the way he came, his movements a blur of speed.

He peers into the portal, on the off chance the invisibility's let up.
"Well, we got bigger things to fret about, eh? Let's get back 'fore Justin or Ekuur get it in their brainboxes to light the whole damn berg up, eh?"

<Cough*Cough> "Perfect. It's not my fault!" Justin complains to whatever powers may be listening. He takes a gulp of fresh(er) air from the stairway and dashes to the throne, looking for the entrance to the room behind it.

I'll take a double move or Run action if possible or required to make the distance from stairs to throne in one move. With 60' move speed It should be doable! ;)

LOL, yes indeed, the firebug strikes again!

Justin inhales a large quantity of air and runs through the smoke to the throne. It is an ornately-carved chair, somehow looking like a piece from some culture other than khaatsa (one that liked unicorns, since they are festooned all over the huge chair). It sits on a small dias, and behind it is an untitdy pile of what can only be called loot: Paintings, sculptures, rugs and various bric-a-brac all piled in one big tangle. There is a small door in the wall behind the throne as well.

Justin also spots something odd while running past the throne. One section of one arm looks somehow ... shinier ... than the other, as if worn more. You can thank your nat 20 on that one =P

Actions? Oh and I'll need a DC 16 Fortitude check please for next round

Oh indeed.

The folks that chased down the robed khaasta look back to see a pall of black smoke issuing from the tower's top. Orange flames lick from the small windows.

Female catfolk sorceror 11

Merle begins to pick up the pace "I don't suppose either of you have any idea how to put the fire out?" She asks Nari and Isaac

Male Half-elf (Planar) Ranger 5/Rogue 2/Plane Walker 1

Isaac shakes his head and pulls his handkerchief around his mouth and nose again, in anticipation of smoke in the tower.
"Magic's yer department, cutters. All I can think is we just bob what we can, find this stolen beauty and let it burn."

Human Wiz 12 (Evocation)

Well, I think that Beth is carrying most of those water-globe-bombs that we picked up in that little excursion to the Plane of Fire! She could always drop them on top of the tower if we have to. (I have one myself, I intend to use it if things get any hairier!) ;P

OK, Fort save for the beginning, or end of the round?

Fort save:
1d20 + 4 ⇒ (4) + 4 = 8

Oh, snap! That's what you get for playing with fire kids! Um, are the rules for holding your breath in smoke the same as for holding your breath underwater?!? :D

The following is written hoping that the save is made at the END of the round! :)

'Hullo! What's this?!?' Justin thinks as he notices the well-worn arm of the throne. He glances quickly to the small door behind the pile of 'loot', then back to the throne arm.

'Now. If I were a second-rate sorcerer with an artifact and a penchant for stealing beauty, where would I hide my GOOD toys? Hm. I'll take 'Egotistical Armchair #1' for the win!'

Justin swings back around to the chair. He promptly sits in it. He takes his hand and places it on the shinier arm. He rubs it briskly.

"C'mon! 'Open Sesame' you renegade from a Princesses' Playroom!" Justin shouts in frustration.

"Oh Cr<Cough*COUGH>"

Male Human (Athasian) Cleric 10

Taking a deep breath of the smokey air, Ekuur suddenly feels invigorated and refreshed after the earlier nausea. He frowns a bit at Isaac, "Just because I follow the Sacred Flame does not make me an arsonist. Fire is a cleanser, which clears death away so that life may flourish. Of course, it can also clear away the taint of foul creatures such as these, so perhaps letting the conflagration proceed is best."

He sighs some, though, and continues, "Of course, it will also hinder our search not to find this artifact, and so ..." Ekuur begins casting create water in an effort to contain (but not put out completely) the fire for the moment. "I will try and contain the fire for now; once we have found what we came for, I will allow it to resume it's holy work."

As the thick acrid smoke begins to make Justin hack uncontrollably, he manages to see a small button hidden near the worn area. He presses it, and the polished section slides back into the chair arm with a faint *snick* sound. There is a small hidden chamber in the throne arm: Inside is an ancient looking metal rod, possibly bronze. It looks like a mace shaft without the head. One end is covered with a black rubbery coating. Arcane runes twist down the rod, faded and blurred with the passsage of time like an old coin.

Gratz!

Justin's joy is tempered by his coughing jag. He looks through the stinging acrid cloud for an exit.

OK, for round three, I'll need another Fort save, this one DC 17. If you fail, you will take 1d6 non-lethal from the smoke, and be unable to do anything but cough. If you succeed, you can flee the area.

Oh, I think I made that comment outside. But if I'm back at the tower by now, I'll respond anyways.

No need. The only affected area is the 'jungle' room at the moment. There is a haze of smoke coming down from above, but not enough to cause injury (yet). As for location, let's just say everyone trots back to the tower entrance for now, unless some of you want to follow Justin. Sound good?

Hmm. The fire is at the top level of the tower (six stories (60 ft) off the ground). Bethany could dump her four potions on the burning roof, and the water would funnel through the hatch and dampen the fire somewhat. Then she could drop Ekuur on the hosed-down area and he could continue slorping water on the fire belowdecks. I will assume she could haul Ekuur up to the roof under stress and stay aloft for a few minutes.

Male Human (Athasian) Cleric 10

Ekuur weighs 222 lbs and has 100 lbs of gear. If I leave most of the gear on the ground, it's still my own weight plus the weight of half-plate. Not sure what Bethany's strength is, but it may be difficult for her to carry me up there ...

YUG! Yeah I don't thin STR of 10 is gonna get the job done there ..

Coughing in short, shallow breaths he hopes will prevent him from breathing in too much smoke, Justin gives a swift glance at the small doorway behind the throne. He shakes his head in frustration.

"<Cough> Gotta remember. Pillage, THEN burn!" He grumbles as he gets up from the throne. He leans forward in anticipation of his speed spell kicking in. Then he stops and looks up at a roaring sound getting louder, and closer.

I'll try and be flexible about it =P

Justin hacks uncontrollably, his lungs burning from the acrid smoke. He feels woozy as the smoke surrounds him

1d6 ⇒ 4 Non-lethal damage

Here's where you would roll again to catch your breath, but now you won't have to

Suddenly a blast of cold water comes streaming out of the landing Justin had blasted from the top floor earlier, hosing the tower stairway in a massive icy torrent. Justin's breathing is helped by the sudden circulation of non-smoky air brought with this torrent. For a moment he sighs in relief, until he hears an ominous groan above him. Small streams of water start apearing above his head as the ceiling starts to buckle from the combined weight of 30,000 gallons of Elemental Water poured into the floor above. A heavy flow of water starts swirling through the potted jungle plants, sweeping many of them down.

OK. You have your moment, time to go. I'll need a STR check DC 15 to ford the water and get out down the flooded stairs before the ceiling collapses. Any training in Swim will give you a +2 synergy bonus. Your expeditious retreat will ensure you can move fast enough to get out, so just the STR check
