Corliss groans and gets to his feet. He casts a light spell on the tip of his rapier and looks at his surroundings.

I needs some healin'!

The aching fellow suddenly recalls that he's a priest of Besmara and that he ought to be able to heal himself. Perhaps. He looks around again, like maybe he thinks that someone else is there in the pit with him.

Corliss:
As your eyes flutter open, you are not surprised perhaps to be surrounded by darkness. Standing, you cast light on your rapier and stagger backwards as the murky light reveals an enormous maw wider than you are tall filled with fangs longer than your hand and dripping with ooze. It seems to be attached to a giant, lumpy body roughly spherical with nearly a dozen long thick tentacles attached. The tentacles wrap around you cutting off further retreat. The thing gives a bass chuckle and the female voice is heard again. "Whaat? Perhaps you were expecting someone else?"

Jim and Dingus:
Jim and Dingus sink into the mist as they descend ahead of Dibbets and Kaul. Jim feels even less comfortable as Dingus seems to be leaning into him. The tenor of the susurrus below changes from a sound more like gentle waves to that of hissing chants.

Kaul and Dibbs:
Jim and Dingus disappear into the mist as they descend ahead. Dibbets hops down the first couple steps while Kaul peers into to foggy pit suspiciously. He sees Jim and Dingus disappear into the murk and listens carefully, the tenor of the soft lapping waves below changes to an unsettling sound, much like thick jungle fronds swaying in a breeze.

Dingus & Jim

Dingus reaches out and grabs Jim's shoulder stopping him. "Shh! Hold a minute, and let me see if I can understand what they're saying".

Not sure if the others can hear Corliss or not; I'll leave that for you to include in other spoilers, if applicable.

"Ye ain't me sweet Bessie!" Corliss yells, panic and revulsion in his voice. "Hands off!"

Corliss Blackboots Escape Artist Check: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (13) + 2 = 15

"Garn, ye're a grabby one, ain't ye?"

Corliss:
Corliss attempts to slip through the tentacles, but there are too many and every way he moves, another tenatcle appears to cut him off. The creature floats up overhead and Corliss feels like he might be at the bottom of the sea. He touches the back of his head to make sure that he hasn't bumped his head again and sure enough, there's a tender bump growing back there. The horrible creature gives an ominous laugh and switches to a deep inhuman tone, "For certain I am not the Pirate Queen, merely her warning- her Black Warning. She can barely bring herself to answer you the minor prayers you offer, you traitor. Another port sour priest, who turns his back on Her mission. Do not think that her patience is unlimited, however. You and these lollygaggers that accepted her favor and then jump ship rather than do their duty!"

Dingus:
Dingus can clearly hear the chanting in serpent speak- "The King in Jade returns and brings the sacrifice! Come Emerald Scale, return to your throne!" Dingus does not think that the chanting itself is a spell, yet something in it calls him and stirs his sluggish serpent blood. Perhaps somehow the Dreamlands can fulfill his darkest desires or most dire nightmares.

Cap'n:

At the all too familiar sound of the jungle Kaul balks... an old memory stirs and he fights the temptation to pick o'er Dibbs' noggin for pests...

"Hur. I ain't sure Dibbs. Reminds me too much o' when Tum an' me were thick as thieves..."

For his part the grubby oracle listens intently, then casts a baleful gaze up at his brutish shipmate;

"Don't ye be invokin' the Nut ye Nugget... Them tides 'ave been sailed. So forgets the coconutter an' follow me!"

With that he hobbles into the mist...

Cap'n:

"What exactly be Besmara's mission?" Corliss asks the monstrosity. "A ship I was on lowered the literal boom on me head a while back, an' since that day I've had only the fleetingest o' memories from me past. So I set meself to be a healer o' sorts, to make sure those who pillage the seas--includin' the fine lads I be sailin' with now--survive to do so well into the future."

"Wouldn't call the lads 'lollygaggers,' neither, 'specially not the half-orc. Ol' Kaul's more o' a 'loppy-gagger, iff'n ye gets me meanin'!"

Yep--Corliss will attempt to use his unique brand of humor to get ol' Blackwarn to warm up to him and the rest of the crew!

Kaul/Dibbs- Magillas in the Mist:
The pair feel their way down the stairs to a damp muddy floor. in the strange light of the dreamlike fog, the stone walls have receded and dissolved leaving only an encircling hedge of jungle. strange calls come from beyond and the trees sway in an unsettling manner, always from a direction out of view. Dibbets is dismayed, but perhaps not as much as Kaul, to find that a certain coconut has been invoked. The nefarious nut rolls out from the bush thirty feet away and stops to direct its beadies on the thug. "Oooooh Fait'less one, have you found de Fait' again an' come seek out Tum-bobo to pledge youself?"

Nutty Dingus

Spoiler:

Dingus tilts his head and takes an excited gasp. He notices that Richard's head is up and listening as well. In a quite but excited breathy voice he exclaims.

"Yes! Finally I am called to my destiny! Do you hear Richard...they summon me".

Dingus suddenly bolts past Jim and starts towards the chanting his mind only on thoughts of Glory and Power.

"Aw, feck. Come on, mates! Arses and elbows--Dingus is scarpering!" Jim hustles after the fleeing sorcerer.

Jim is right after the flashing skinny legs under the raised robe/skirt as Dingus dashes down the spiraling stairs. Jim realizes with a start that he is the only one following, no one else can be seen. The stairs end abruptly before a rough opening that Dingus darts through. The mist becomes smoke now with the cloying scent of incense. The hissing chants grow louder and Jim has a bad feeling about what lies ahead.

Corliss:
The tentacled terror eyes the wayward priest with a discerning eye or three while the tentacles slither unnervingly around the earnest sailor. "You don't remember Red Aesha? I almost believe you because you'd have to be insane to tempt Besmara's wrath."

Male Human Cleric 6+5 of Besmara | hp -53- 41/55 | AC 23, t 13, ff 20 | Fort +6, Ref +4, Will +8 | Init +6 | Perc +3 | Channel 2/3 | Storm Burst (Sp) 6/6 | Copycat (Sp) 3/6 | Insanity 3 (DC 10 Will) | Conditions: copycat

Cap'n:

"R-r-Red Aesha?" Corliss echoes nervously.

Wait a sec.... does that name sound vaguely familiar?

Corliss:
As Corliss says the name, memories return as a flood. Yes, Red Aesha, a cruel elven pirate who profanes Besmara and has set her goal to replace Her as the Pirate Queen. Corliss half-remembers orders to track her down and send her to her doom. That was before a series of unfortunate events, however.
The great floating beast chuckles darkly, "I see by your eyes that you may now recall your sworn duty. For some reason, Besmara had spared you thus far and arranged for a parlay with Her new champions, but they've proved as forgetful as you. She ought to have arranged for you lot to all hang on Chelish crosses. Maybe that will happen yet, for her patience is not infinite and Red Aesha has the Stone of Solesh and is gathering power in the north."

Nuttin' To See Here:

At the sight of the familiar overnut, Kaul mugs a grin and tips the coconutter a nod;

"Hur. Nah Tum... I is the one who is worship'd these days!"

He raises his rust-red claw with a proud stance;

"Hur. Be'old: The Mechaman! Hur-hur..."

For his part Dibb's merely keeps the nasty nut in his line of sight, whilst shooting Kaul a jaundiced look at his equally crazed rant.

Nut cracker:
The furious coconut gnashes its big ivory teeth and growls dangerously. "Foo' apos'le. You think you a God without Tum-Bobo? Tum gonna crack YOU, nutcracker!" Suddenly, the hairy nut grows into a hairy beast that is bigger than Kaul. It is an apish demon with rust red hair covered in filth, rolling mad eyes, long grasping claws and arms, and a rubbery jaw filled with great yellow teeth. Cap'n:

Corliss doesn't try to fight the beastie or deny its words; instead, he tries to get as much information out of it as he can, hopefully to weigh the truth in its words at a later date.

"You say the lads accepted Bessie's...er, Besmara's favor? When? The more information I have to confront 'em with will make it that much more difficult for 'em to wiggle off the hook, eh?"

Sailor and the Snake:
The Taldan continues to trot after Dingus, blade out.

Corliss:
"If they don't recall Sentinel Island, now Banshee Island, eh, you've my leave to give them Her Black Spot where they stand. They withstood Dallian's treachery and Aesha's wrath and earned their Queen's favor. Dallian's soul is Pazuzu's now, but Aesha lives and they keep Her favor only if they end her."

Jim and Dingus:
Jim follows Dingus through the rough opening and enters a great cave. The ceiling is far above marked only by the stalactites that pierce through the haze of incense. The end of the cave is lost in darkness. They are standing on a high platform some 50 feet wide and 20 feet deep that drops away to throngs of writhing serpentfolk 10 feet below. Dingus stands to the side of a stone altar chiseled in sinuous forms and scales and has unconsciously raised the jade dagger once again and the snakefolk hiss in ecstasy. Opposite the altar from Dingus is a towering serpent with green and gold scales, a woman's face and ribbed hood something like a cobra. She hisses a command at Dingus.

Dingus:
"The time has come. Sacrifice the human and share its blood. It is your destiny to be the King in Jade!"

Dingus

Spoiler:

Perhaps blind in his thirst for ultimate power, Dingus didn't realize the sacrifices necessary to achieve it. He feels the draw of the power of ruling the masses deep in his soul... but then he looks at Jim... his friend... the one who had been there for him always. He thought about little stinky Dibbets, Big scarred Kaul, and even the often confused, but caring Corliss and doubt began to nose it's way into his fragile psyche. Then he thought about the others along the way, and his determination took on a new path. Perhaps there is another way

Dingus turned first to the writhing masses hands held high in acknowledgement of his adoring people, He then raised his dagger high, turned to Jim... and winked.

With a hysterical scream Dingus rushed the priestess in an attempt to make her the required sacrifice.
