Skai Calandrella |
"Bow and arrows, eh? Now that is unfortunate."
Skai stares at the man, and then looks around. "If it will make you feel better, you can have mine. I just found them, but haven't even tried to use it yet. Not really my style anyway."
Egil Forkbeard |
"Take your equipment, friend," Egil says. "Then let's see if we can finish off these lizards,"
The skald holds his axe at the ready and prepares to continue exploring.
Theon d'Malheur |
"Well, then I am glad we arrived in a timely manner. We must continue with our exploration, you are welcome to join us. In fact, I believe that would likely be the safest option for you." He then proceeds to the next locked door, waiting for Skai to check for traps/locks. Once the clear is given, he listens for any sounds and if he hears none then he will open the door.

Recognizing his bow and the fletching on the arrows, the man gives Sai an odd look before gratefully accepting his weapons back. Theon offers a place in the group, and Balenor gratefully accepts. "It seems that you are correct, sir, and if you don't mind I would like to join you to finish this. I have a bit of a debt to pay back to those damn lizards!"
The team moves back through the barracks and to the remaining door. Carefully Theon and Skai check the door. Hearing nothing, Theon opens it to reveal another partially flooded room. Cracks in the walls and ceiling of this chamber have allowed rainwater to collect here, flooding the room and giving rise to a profusion of mold and fungus along the walls and ceiling. Sitting towards the middle of the room is a very large frog. In the moment that Theon opens the door, it makes its presence known, flicking out its tongue to wrap around the man. Luckily, Theon is quickly able to break free!

Egil steps into the room, raising his great ax high in the air. With a cry of victory sounding from his lips, Egil brings the ax whistling through the air to cleave straight through the frog and leaves two almost perfect halves to fall away twitching.
Balenor pokes his head into the room and lets out a soft whistle of amazement.
Egil Forkbeard |
"Did someone mention Hors d'oeuvres?" Egil says with a smile. "I hear of some that like frog legs..."
The skald lowers his bloodied axe and begins looking around the room.

Looking around the room, Egil and Loryndahl both notice a jade statue laying forgotten in the rubble accumulated in a corner of the room.

Well struck!
Vlazis picks up the statue, Interesting worksmanship, I wonder if... Detect Magic
GM DevilDoc |
Vlazis can find no aura of magic about the statue. Upon closer examination, it seems to be some sort of religious totem or idol and is extremely old. It could probably fetch a tidy sum from the right collector, for the Jade alone to say nothing of the age and the location you have found it.
Moving to the last door on the level, it is opened to reveal the remains of the western room. This room has partially collapsed, the same as the other floors, leaving a remarkable vista spread out before you.
Vlazis 'The Beloved' Chibuzo |
Agreed. By the way, how long have you been here, Balenor?
GM DevilDoc |
The bard pales a bit at the question and gets a pained look on his face. "I am not sure.. its not like they took me on a daily stroll through the sunshine. But I was traveling through the Cairnlands not too far from here on the day of the earthquake. I found the ruined lower chamber that evening, and have been here since. They fed me a few times.. if you want to call it that.. but its hard to tell."
Flying by the seat of my pants, but lets go with this. We will put the earthquake on the day you headed back from the Kortos Mountains, so one day of travel, three days in Absalom pending your Confirmation, you are late in the day on day 4 I imagine.
Theon d'Malheur |
Theon takes a moment to enjoy the simple beauty of the view, but the image is marred by discussion of Balenor's captivity. "I am honestly surprised you were even able to eat anything considering the smell of those beasts. It was all I could do not to rip off my nose."
Egil Forkbeard |
Egil listens to the man's response. "We are here to finish exploring this tower...if you would like to accompany us, that is great. If not, we understand," he says.
"Before the rest of them realize what is going on, we should continue."
GM DevilDoc |
The man smiles grimly at Theon. "Yes.. that did take a bit of getting used to!! Rather overpoweringly pungent, aren't they?" Turning to the rest of the conversation, he considers your input and nods his head. "I agree, Egil. We should keep moving if that is your wish. It would not do to tarry too long. And I would like to accompany you if I am permitted.. I would love a chance to return a few of these bruises! Not to mention keep this from happening to anyone else!"
With these words, Balenor turns and allows the party leaders to make their way back to the stairwell and falls in towards the rear of the line. The party begins to ascend once more, and after a few turns a light begins to make its way down from above. The leaders can see that the stairway ends after another turn or so.
Any last minute preparations??
Theon d'Malheur |
None on Theon's part. He will wait for Skai to check the door for traps/locks and then once the all clear is given he will listen and then open the door if he doesn't hear anything.
Perception: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (14) + 6 = 20

Ready to roll
GM DevilDoc |
Theon: there is no door, just the stairway leading up to the final level. You don't hear much of anything from above.. maybe a bit of movement, but nothing more.
The team moves ahead into the light coming from above.
The four wings of the tower are completely open on this level, forming one great, cross-shaped chamber with arched ceilings. The decayed remnants of a carpet run from the doorways at the end of each wing, meeting in the center, where a spiral staircase drops out of sight below. A large, throne-like chair stands in the middle of the eastern wing next to a big chest. Standing in a large window French Door type thing is the biggest and ugliest troglodyte you have yet to meet. Next to the throne sits an albino alligator that hisses at you as you enter the room. Turning, the troglodyte cries out in his language, and the alligator shuffles forward.

A creature with this ability can nauseate the creatures that it damages. Any living creature that takes damage from a creature with the distraction ability is nauseated for 1 round; a Fortitude save (DC 11) negates the effect.
Swarms possess the distraction universal monster rule. Spellcasting or concentrating on spells within the area of a swarm requires a caster level check (DC 20 + spell level). Using skills that involve patience and concentration requires a DC 20 Will save.[/dice]
Satisfied with his spell, the troglodyte turns towards Vlazis and conjures a ball of flame into his hand.
Balenor continues his song, swinging around the side of the swarm area.
