15pt buy first try. Dunno, luck eh?
Anyway, if someone wants the above stats, feel free. First come first served. Guess I did say I'd be doing things differently.
I'm a little disappointed that the rules are turning people off, but this was bringing me back to the days I first started playing tabletop (3.5 days) so because it;s my first ever PBP, I wanted to commemorate that.
Some of you have been lucky, others not so much, but I respect those who haven't complained and am looking forward to all of your characters.
I want you to survive because without players there is no game.
I want there to be challenge.
I want you all to have varying abilities and attributes.
Caution will be something that will heavily aid in your survival, and who knows what will happen when the game kicks off? For those sticking it out, like I stated in my original post, I often grant boons and abilities to make things fun and aid in your survival.
I will go with 4 players but if anyone drops out, I'll be happy to introduce another PC into the game. Hopefully though that won't be the case as I want to only accept players who are serious about playing and plan to be in it for the long haul.

@Dunebugg - Unless it's illegal (highly doubtful if it's in the FAQ), go for it. The idea was to get a decent mixture of 12-30 point builds, and that hasn't worked out so far, so you don't need further limitations.
@Everyone else - I'm not about statistics. My strong points are writing, graphic design, events planning and anything related to art. In my head with 3d6, you were just as likely to roll 6 18's as you were 6 7's (excluding the allowance of any stat lower than a 7 staying at 7). It's just worked out a lot lower than I and most others on here have hoped sadly.
Only other thing I kind of might suggest is rolling 10d3 to determine stats. I would like a vote to test the water though, especially as some of you have made builds already, but those happy with their builds can keep them as they are.
In this example, the lowest you could get is a 10pt buy and the highest is 30, so maybe I'll go with that.
I won't be making any decisions about characters yet though, so everyone's in the running and if you have a weaker build than someone else, don't feel shunned. I'll respect you more for playing it and choosing your concept for the game would hopefully be reward enough.
I know it's been frustrating (that wasn't my intention, believe me), but it is a real turn off to read sarcastic remarks and malicious responses because to me that says it'll be carried over into the game and I don't want that.
Anyway, here we go:
10d3 ⇒ (2, 1, 3, 2, 2, 1, 3, 1, 2, 3) = 20
20 point buy. shall we go with this new strategy? I'm happy to and it seems like a fresh new way to do things.
Cortez, The Deathless Gantzer |
Nope. If people are happy with what they've rolled, they can keep what they have but it still won't guarantee a place in the campaign. It's just so everyone's happy. If they want to re-roll, they can. If they've already made their character, it would be unfair to change things so they can keep it.
Congrats on the 21pt buy. :)
Just to confirm - No re-roll's on the 10d3 ruling.
Helaman |
Ok... will give this a spin.
10d3 ⇒ (3, 2, 2, 3, 1, 2, 1, 2, 1, 1) = 18
I'm pretty happy with that. I am not about the mega stats and I would have been happy with 15. 18 is a cherry on the cake. If someone is 30 then I am ok with that. They can pull more of the load and I expect someone getting high point builds to take MAD classes where higher point buys are needed to keep up with the SAD builds.
Need to think a bit but there is martial focused wizard concept Ive been toying with that may work in such an AP.
HP 1d6 ⇒ 3
Money 2d6 ⇒ (6, 4) = 10

::: U P D A T E :::
Character Creation Guidelines - Please read carefully!
Stats: Roll 10d3 - There will be no limitations on how you arrange your stats.
Races: Aasimar, Elf, Half-Elf, Halfling, Human and Tiefling only.
Racial Archetypes: All official racial archetypes are allowed.
Classes: Any, minus Monks (though I am allowing the Martial Artist Archetype), summoners, gunslingers, cavaliers and samurai's. I don't feel these classes to be a good fit for this AP and am on the fence with Alchemists.
Traits: 2 (1 campaign and 1 of your choosing).
Alignments: Only good aligned (NG, LG and CG) because your character should feel he/she wants to make a better living for himself and those within Westcrown - unless you like oppression and living under a fascist regime? ;)
Wealth: To be rolled as per your class guidelines.
HP: Rolled every level including level 1.
Hopefully this will give you all a little more hope and interest you some more.
Thanks!

I was good with all the stats I'd rolled previous, save that one 7 - hard to pick which stat to sacrifice :(
Since I have to roll for money and health anyways...why not gamble!
Stat point buy: 10d3 ⇒ (3, 3, 2, 1, 3, 1, 1, 3, 2, 3) = 22
Table 6-1 pg140 Money Roll: 4d6 ⇒ (1, 4, 1, 3) = 9x10gp - Karma...
HP Roll: 1d8 ⇒ 5

Only restrictions are: No third party, no two traits from the same category and no traits from other campaigns, with the exception of Gnoll Killer from Legacy of Fire, which I'd allow you to take and reflavour for your favoured enemy if playing a Ranger/a character with a hatred fueled backstory.
+1 attack and damage vs hellknight's?
+2 attack and damage if you're a hellknight hating ranger?
They're your examples. :)
Cortez, The Deathless Gantzer |
Also, a question on races. If we do take the Tiefling trait will we be forced to take the Infernal Bastard trait in the campaign guide?
Sorry, missed this one.
Answer - Nope. You may take it if you want any level 0 spell of your choosing as a spell like ability. It's not something mandatory.

Right, I have finished my character, even altered his back-ground to fit.
Basic run down :
Male, Elf
Fighter (Tactician)
Works as a Guard.
Dexterity based.
Brutally honest.
Right, I have to go to work now, I will check back tomorrow morning to see what has happened and if I need to answer any questions.

Fun! A tall, lanky, love-struck aasimar bard from the streets. Sounds like just the guy to send against an oppressive regime.

I'm going to go ahead and see if I get better point buy than what I have. If not, I'll keep my 13 point buy; and I can also keep my point buy if you prefer it. I have a character concept that works with 13 point buy and won't be disappointed if others are stronger than I am. Sonya will be able to beat people with a shield whatever I choose.
Since she'll be a ranger either way, I'm going to roll my HP now.
HP: 1d10 ⇒ 9
Point Buy: 10d3 ⇒ (2, 2, 1, 3, 1, 1, 2, 2, 1, 3) = 18
EDIT: Okay... That's pretty impressive. 9 on the roll +3 from toughness +1 from favored class and +X from Constitution... This is a solid start. 18 point buy is considerably better than 13 point buy, too. Okay.
Rolling wealth now.
Wealth: 5d6 ⇒ (5, 3, 4, 5, 1) = 18, multiplied by 10.
Cortez, The Deathless Gantzer |
Awesome. Keep those builds coming! I'm looking for a group that would really work well together.
Two Aasimar's so far, a few Tiefling's and an Elf or so. Not seen many Humans really.
The AP itself will be quite personalised to the players, so please bare that in mind!
Bit surprised there aren't more entrants, but then I guess it seems everyone wants to play Jade Regent at the minute!
Amir Hiram |
Okay. My character's sheet is complete!
Sonya, Tiefling Ranger (Freebooter / Trapper)
Sonya Black was born in Cheliax to two lower class humans who were struck with shock and disbelief when they realized their child had obvious demon heritage. It was strange because her two older siblings had been ordinary humans; so why was she different? Her father accused her mother of being unfaithful, and her mother accused her father of having fiend blood. Within a month after her birth, her parents were divorced, her older brothers leaving with her father while her mother was stuck with the demon child. It was not a loving relationship Sonya had with her mother.
Being treated poorly by everyone she knew, Sonya learned how to defend herself very quickly. She developed a mean right hook before she learned how to read or write, and she learned how to pick a lock by the age of nine. By the time she was twelve, her mother had thrown her out of her house, and she started living with a gang of like-minded individuals, all of whom were also tieflings. They did some odd jobs, some of them less legal than others, and also mugged a few unlucky passers-by. They never killed anyone, but they knew how to rob and how to fight.
Sonya became an integral member of the group, partly because of her natural strength, partly because of her skill at lockpicking, and partly because she had a way of encouraging and guiding her friends in a scrap with a keen eye and a few quick words. She was happy enough with this life, though never quite content. It was a dangerous way to live, but they managed to avoid the attention of the Hellknights, which was more than could be said for other criminals.
It all ended, though, after the gang muscled the wrong noble for some gold. One day after they'd robbed him blind, he had multiple squads Hellknights come after them. The result was bloody; of the dozen or so tieflings, only three of them got out alive, and they had to flee in such a way that they couldn't find each other again.
Now lacking a group to be a part of and wanting a little revenge on the Hellknights, Sonya is looking for a new job and maybe a new bunch of folks to work with... if they're not a bunch of prim-and-proper arrogant bastards, that is.

You can also try 2d6+6 for Die roll. This gives you on average something closer to a 20 point buy. Depending on the randomness you can end up with higher than a 20pb or lower closer to 15pb
2d6 + 6 ⇒ (3, 5) + 6 = 14
2d6 + 6 ⇒ (5, 5) + 6 = 16
2d6 + 6 ⇒ (3, 1) + 6 = 10
2d6 + 6 ⇒ (3, 3) + 6 = 12
2d6 + 6 ⇒ (6, 1) + 6 = 13
2d6 + 6 ⇒ (6, 6) + 6 = 18
Well that one was closer to a 25 point build!
You can also do 4d4+2
4d4 + 2 ⇒ (1, 4, 4, 3) + 2 = 14
4d4 + 2 ⇒ (2, 1, 3, 3) + 2 = 11
4d4 + 2 ⇒ (4, 3, 4, 2) + 2 = 15
4d4 + 2 ⇒ (2, 4, 1, 4) + 2 = 13
4d4 + 2 ⇒ (1, 2, 2, 3) + 2 = 10
4d4 + 2 ⇒ (2, 2, 4, 3) + 2 = 13

Ha, the one I didn't think of that would have probably worked the best!
Thanks, I'll note that for future reference. I wanted to avoid point buy and go with random roll's, but I ended up going with the roll 10d3 approach (several posts above). Another quirky way of rolling stats, but it works a little better for what the general public want.
Shame the 3d6 rule didn't work out as I'd have been happy with that if rolls had been more generous. Certain death was pretty present though.
Cortez, The Deathless Gantzer |
There's been a few characters created for this now but really not that many, so I'm just going to leave it open until there's enough entries to choose a decent group from, so by all means please apply.
I'll likely leave this open for another week if the pace is as slow as it has been. I guess because this is quite an old AP now, most people have played it.

Yea, we have the issue of 2 point buy or 20 point buy now, so there's little to no variation sadly.
It looks like your 4d4+2 or 2d6+6 ideas would have been best in the long run. Still, maybe I'll just change to that for the other applicants soon (if there is anymore interest).
That way all stats will be different as there would have been three or four different types of stats rolled. I might just do it for the sake of being unique and all.
Characters interested from this point onwards - Please use yet another rule for stats below!
Roll 4d4+2 six times.
Thanks!
Helaman |
Okies... Character not yet ready so may as well. That said? A 20pt buy is great! Nothing wrong with that.
Here we go:
4d4 + 2 ⇒ (4, 2, 1, 2) + 2 = 11
4d4 + 2 ⇒ (4, 1, 1, 3) + 2 = 11
4d4 + 2 ⇒ (3, 1, 4, 3) + 2 = 13
4d4 + 2 ⇒ (4, 4, 1, 4) + 2 = 15
4d4 + 2 ⇒ (2, 2, 4, 2) + 2 = 12
4d4 + 2 ⇒ (4, 2, 1, 4) + 2 = 13
Not the 'build' I wanted BUT I think this better fits the GMs desire for rolled stats rather than roll for build points.
Need a bit of time to mess with it but this is cool as an array. Again, I don't need to be Uberman.
May as well roll HPS to go with the new stat.
