okay, so here's the skinny/idear:
Character design/build:
attributes will be rolled by dice, using the following system: 4d6, reroll 1s, minimum stat 10 (if less is rerolled, reroll the stat). HP will be max 1st two levels, then 3/4ths every level thereafter. as far as preview classes/3rd party goes, I would be willing to at least consider anything, with the caveat that I would I could veto with an explanation. Each character to be submitted must be 20th level (including racial hit dice, if any) and must have a backstory that has at least a paragraph explaining your milestones at each of the following levels: 1, 5, 10, 15, and 20. Each character selected will be at the top of their profession/trade and be called for an important mission, the details of which will be provided when you arrive at the Spire (the pathfinder society headquarters in Absalom.) I am currently planning on running a group of 4 players (although I might do 2 groups if I get really exceptional submissions). each character submitted must be submitted under one of the following 4 character archtypes:
Martial (non-spellcaster/alchemist); Arcane; Divine; Highly Skilled
I will be comparing submissions based on category when I make my decision, and each submission can only be submitted under 1 category.
Gameplay:
unlike the normal flow of a PBP game, I will work with the players to create a narrative that I will post in the gameplay forum as a piece of fiction. I will be posting each part once every 1-2 weeks, depending on player actions and RL things that come up. so, for example, in the discussion thread, I would present the situation, have each character roll initiative, and then pm them in initiative order, describe what they have seen, have them make their dice rolls, and then go to the next person. once the dice side is completed, I would then write up what happened for the world to see. that means that I may on occasion take liberties with the dialogue that characters use, but I would do my utmost to keep the dialogue within character. if you're interested, please start by submitting your character idea or interest and we can go from there!

YoricksRequiem |

You weren't kidding when you said high level.
I'm intrigued by the idea and different formatting style. Let me roll some dice and think over the concept.
4d6 ⇒ (6, 2, 3, 6) = 17
4d6 ⇒ (3, 2, 4, 3) = 12
4d6 ⇒ (3, 4, 5, 6) = 18
4d6 ⇒ (3, 2, 6, 4) = 15
4d6 ⇒ (3, 3, 1, 5) = 12 Reroll 1 = 1d6 ⇒ 5
4d6 ⇒ (6, 2, 3, 6) = 17
18, 17, 17, 16, 15, 12. I guess I can't really say no to that.
Do the characters need to be agents of the Pathfinder Society, or are they potentially outsourcing on this?
Also I understand if not, but would the Advanced Character Classes from the Playtest be available for this?

Vrog Skyreaver |

ya, I'm okay with the playtest stuff (although I think that, built correctly, a warpriest might be a bit OP. then again, you might just need that level of OP =D )
and no, you don't have to be a pathfinder; I have a "boon" for characters that are, and one for characters that aren't.
I'm basing this little adventure on a tabletop game that didn't quite pan out (there were schedule issues mostly, plus I had to ask a player to leave the group, which definitely can kill games).

Ptolmaeus Arvenus |

A: 4d6 ⇒ (2, 6, 2, 2) = 12
B: 4d6 ⇒ (5, 3, 3, 1) = 12
C: 4d6 ⇒ (2, 2, 6, 5) = 15
D: 4d6 ⇒ (4, 1, 3, 1) = 9
E: 4d6 ⇒ (6, 6, 6, 3) = 21
F: 4d6 ⇒ (3, 4, 1, 6) = 14
Rerolls:
B: 1d6 ⇒ 1 D: 1d6 ⇒ 3 D: 1d6 ⇒ 2 F: 1d6 ⇒ 6
B: 1d6 ⇒ 3
Results:
A 12 | B 14 | C 15 | D 12 | E 21 | F 19
I've got a couple of builds waiting in the wings for something like this. Most notably a Tactician Fighter (Called Shot/Vital Strike specialist and secondary skill character) and a Martial Artist (He hits really hard) but I might put something else together as well.

Vrog Skyreaver |

I don't know if people are on the fence, so I thought I should clarify something: most of the time, I will allow 3rd party stuff, as long as it's on the SRD. I might have to think about where psionics would come from (and we would definitely be using psionics/magic transparency), but I realized that my tone in the initial post was rather draconian.

Vrog Skyreaver |

also, forgot to mention (cause sometimes thunkin is hard):
with your submission, if you could hold off on selecting gear, as the boon that people will get is related to equipment.
also, if you were thinking about taking mythic tiers, I'm all for it, but I would be using a modified system for acquiring them: you can take 3 tiers for 1 level, with a max of -3 levels for all 10 mythic tiers. I figured that would be a good compromise, and a reason to at least consider not taking them.

Vrog Skyreaver |

insert apropos honorific here,
The lodge in Absalom has received the direst warning and a request for aid from a trusted sister organization. As we do not have the resources for the level of large scale aid that such an endeavor would no doubt require, we have decided to attempt a different approach: we shall send in a group of highly trained individuals who might have a chance of dealing with such a threat. After an exhaustive search of well known individuals from across the known lands, we have determined that you are most qualified to assist us in this most dire of situations, the details of which are best left for a more intimate setting away from prying eyes. Please come to the grand lodge in the city of Absalom and present this document to the attendant there and you will be brought into skyreach, the only place that we feel such a meeting might take place safely, to meet the others that we have selected for this task and to have it fully explained.
For the good of all Golarion,
Ambrus Valsin

I like it.
To answer your question, I believe this character is a "retired pathfinder" I'm not sure yet if he just got tired and said 'no more' or if there was some falling out.
In the strictest sense I suppose he'd be a hired gun, but he could be either. I am working on his backstory now.
Baergar of the North rides Mûmak, his mammoth companion here and there. Ranging far and near, this hardy dwarf seeks to prosper the communities he passes through and he is a stalwart enemy of evil.
Numbers-wise, Baergar is a switch-hitter. He favors his bow until a clash is imminent, then draws his falchion and charges on Mûmak's back.

Vrog Skyreaver |

@darksmokepuncher: very nice. looks good so far!
@everyone who's applied so far: I do intend to go forward with this game, even if there are just 3 of you. I will create an npc 4th member who will fill in as needed.
that being said, the snippet of info you would get about each npc that I would run in that instance would be:
Kolker Stormhammer: Tor is the cleric's cleric, as well as the dwarf's dwarf. a brewer and cleric of torag, Tor would be the primary healer for such a expedition.
Metia: human slip of a girl, metia is a master of UMD and trap resolution who would fill the "skills" portion of your group.
Mylos Fearbreaker: an Andoran knight and well known hero of that country, Mylos is known for inspirational speeches, unfailing courage, and tactical knowledge that can counter overwhelming odds.
Torah: Torah is well known as a hunter of those who abuse the arcane and a defender of the common people, although he is also known to be stand-offish by those he protects, as he shuns people's thanks and offers of reward.

So i'm just getting back into pbp gaming this little gem sounds awesome. how many times have we all played games that got cut short because a group falls apart but you really wanted to see where they could of gone. I would love the chance to be considered for this campaign. I would be willing to fill any role available just given the opportunity to play.

fnord72 |
This looks pretty interesting. You mentioned 20th level (inlcuding racial hit dice). Are you allowing monster races and/or templates?
And it looks like the group is missing the arcane.
As for stats...
4d6 ⇒ (4, 5, 2, 3) = 14 12
4d6 ⇒ (4, 4, 3, 3) = 14 11
4d6 ⇒ (2, 4, 4, 5) = 15 13
4d6 ⇒ (1, 3, 3, 3) = 10 9 reroll 1d6 ⇒ 2 stays 9
4d6 ⇒ (4, 4, 1, 6) = 15 14
4d6 ⇒ (1, 2, 3, 2) = 8 7
Not a very viable build, that's a 6 point build spread. Ouch.
Can't cast 9th level spells without magic gear or enhancement bonuses.

It is not drop lowest and you can reroll all ones.

Vrog Skyreaver |

@les headley: feel free to roll up some stats and see what you get. you're more than welcome to join (while my initial thought was of a group of 4, I'm more than willing to rethink that part, or, as I said, break into two groups if I get enough solid submissions.)
@ptolemaeus: your mythic idea is certainly okay. feel free to do so.
to answer darksmokepuncher's question about gear, if everyone who's working on a character could chime in an let me know if they're gonna be a member of the society or not? that way, we can get the hired gun's gear outta the way and when we start, i'll get the boon out to the PS agents.

Vrog Skyreaver |

as an additional option when it comes to stats, if you roll and don't get at least a 16, you may use the following set:
4d6 ⇒ (4, 2, 3, 5) = 14
4d6 ⇒ (3, 3, 6, 2) = 14
4d6 ⇒ (6, 1, 2, 3) = 12 rerolled 1: 1d6 ⇒ 6
4d6 ⇒ (6, 3, 6, 5) = 20
4d6 ⇒ (3, 4, 6, 4) = 17
4d6 ⇒ (2, 4, 5, 6) = 17
so 14/14/17/20/17/17

@ptolemaeus: I think your hp maths might be a bit off. calc should be:
20 for max first two levels
105 for 15 levels @7 hp/level
60 for con
20 for favored class
50 for mythic tier 10 @5 hp/level
255 should be pre-gear subtotal
still chugging through, but noticed that off the top of my head. love the titles btw. looking forward to the write up!

Ptolmaeus Arvenus |

As he grew up he took to wandering Ravounel Forest in his spare time, learning the area and the trees. It was on one of these expeditions, at the age of sixteen, that he ran into a something terrible in a very old stretch of forest. Hookclaw had been there for as long as anyone could remember. The terrible old Tatzlwyrm never strayed far from his territory but it seemed that he made an exception for Hiram. Hookclaw was cunning for a Tatzl and had a taste for fresh meat. Before the young Hiram knew what was happening he had been bound and was being drug back to Hookclaw's lair under a ruined watchtower.
The creature kept him dosed on paralytic poisons so he was too weak to struggle while it worked its way through its larder. It looked like the end of Hiram's short life until a stray kick revealed a dull shine in the dirt floor of the cave. Positioning himself over the object he began to dig at it. When he cut a finger on the edge, hope grew within his breast. He started feigning cooperation, with downcast eyes and hammy acting but the Tatzlwyrm was dumb enough to buy it even as the boy quietly spat the doses of poison into the corner of his make-shift cell. Hookclaw, did not catch on until Hiram was on him with the sword, a falcata as it turned out. In the struggle, Hiram dealt Hookclaw a mortal blow but the crafty wyrm managed to dose him with something vicious.
In 4606 AR, as the world was rocked by the death of Aroden, Hiram Morrow struggled in the forgotten basement in a forgotten corner of Cheliax against a terrible poison that should have sent his soul to the Spire. He saw things in that fevered delirium, dark things, people speaking in languages he did not understand, and fire. If he were the superstitious sort, he would have called them visions. Something, whether part of him or the madness that rocked the world, preserved his life and he awoke in his father's care.
The death of Aroden changed many things in Cheliax, four years later he left to join the fight against the Thrune forces. He started as an untrained auxiliary, wielding his Falcata like a cleaver but before long, other talents shone through. With some cunning, he found himself in possession of a title. He was soon prompted to sergeant then captain and on he climbed. Eventually, after gaining the rank of Lord High Marshal from the King Gaspodar he was faced with another challenge. That of the King's assassination. The following chaos saw the rise of House Thrune and the descent of Cheliax into damnation.
In disgust and in front of the gathered nobles of Cheliax, Hiram pulled his chain of office from his neck, clove it in twain and threw one half to the feet of the newly crowned Queen Abrogail Thrune the First.
"Keep an eye on that, I'll want it back one day." Were his parting words to the gathered nobility. Abrogail took the threat very seriously and sent assassins and bounty hunters after him only to have them return bloodied, maimed, and broke, if at all. Eventually, his name passed into urban legend, though none have tried to take his place as Lord High Marshal of Cheliax to this day.
Despite the rumors of death and decrepitude, Hiram Morrow was still as vital at fifty as he was when he first signed up to defend the throne. Having little to restrain him, Hiram Morrow wandered the world learning much and finally fulfilling his dreams of travel and adventure. That is not to say his travels were entirely trouble free. In Taldor he made the mistake of spurning the advances of a dragon in human form, the resulting battle is still sung by bards throughout the nation. In Tian Xia, he routed an invasion of the Successor States by Kaoling with perhaps the most questionable group of renegades, mercenaries monsters, farmers and outlaws that he could scrounge up.
Recently, he has decided to try the quiet life, despite the fact that he is still lacks any physical indication of his true age. So, apart from consulting on various matters for the Pathfinder Society and doing some field work. Hiram has taken a position in the College of Magnimar, teaching linguistics, engineering and history. So far he has been enjoying the simple life that his father had tried to get him to settle for those hundred odd years ago. A decent morning breakfast, flirting with the lovely elven lady that runs the flower shop down the street, tea in the afternoon and occasionally plumbing ancient ruins in search of danger and lost secrets. If he ever truly gets bored... well... there is always the Starstone, isn't there? Or his promise to Cheliax for that matter.

@fnord72: I think that crafting your starting gear can be op in a situation like this (as you'd get all of the benefits, without any of the drawbacks). You can feel free, for background purposes, however, to say that you crafted all your gear if you wish.
