Lantern Lodge

Hello all, I am looking to recruit 4 to 5 player to play through Hoard of the Dragon Queen and possibly Rise of Tiamat. I am looking for well balanced and characters with a degree of depth, not necessarily a balanced party.

This will take place in the forgotten realms setting, so familiarity is a plus but not a requirement. Characters will be created using the 27 point buy system/standard array. No NE or CE alignments. No Aarokocora but all other races are in play, it should be noticed that I have a disdain for Dragonborn. Standard equipment according to class/background. Only WotC published materials will be allowed.

Additional rules that will be allowed include flanking provides advantage, and antagonists will be groups together according to type in initiative.

And before I get the question, yes variant humans and feats are allowed. I would like to start in a week but may extend this to the beginning of September.

I've wanted to try out 5e for a while now. Would you be willing to take on an inexperienced player?

Lantern Lodge

yes, as long as you can commit to posting at least once a day during the weekday.

I can do that. How do you like character sheets linked?

Silver Crusade

dot. feeling monk.

I have a Rogue already ready already.

Very interested, I'll adjust the background to meet the needs of the new campaign if selected.

Love 5e but I'm tied up for a while but I'll give you a bump.

I have Ragar ready. He is a Male Half-Orc Fighter Where will the adventure start in the Realms so that I can adjust his background accordingly?

Lantern Lodge

Greenest, near the Sword Coast below Baldur's Gate.

Lantern Lodge

I highly encourage everyone to choose a bond or alternate feature for this adventure, though it is not required.

As the Cult of the Dragon has grwn bolder, its actions have drawn attention. Your character has stumbled into the Cult's scheme in some manner or has a connection to dragons. The following tables provide you with bonds tailored to the campaign. Use them in place of or in addition to the ones you selected from (or created for) your background.

Bond (d10)
1. Leosin Erlanthar, a wandering monk, once saved your life. He's sent urgent word for you to meet him in a small town called Greenest. Looks like it's time to pay off that debt.
2. When an orc raid drove your family from your home, the people of Greenest took you in. Anyone who threatens Greenest is your sworn enemy.
3. Every five nights, you have a strange sequence of apocalyptic dreams. The world is destroyed by cold, choking fumes, lightning storms, waves of acid, and horrible fire. Each time, the dream ends with ten evil eyes glaring at you from the darkness. You feel a strange compulsion to travel to Greenest. Perhaps the answer to the riddle of your dreams awaits you there.
4. Ontharr Frume, a crusading warrior and champion of good, is your friend and mentor. He has asked you to travel to Greenest is search of rumors of increasing dragon activity.
5. You have heard rumors that your close childhood friend,a half-elf named Talis, has been kidnapped by a strange group of dragon cultists. Your investigations into the cult have led you to the town of Greenest. You must save her!
6. Being the grandchild of a renowned dragon slayer is usually a good way to impress people, but just last week a gang of ruffians attacked you. You barely escaped with your life, but as you fled the ruffians told you that the Cult of the Dragon never forgets and always avenges. You're hoping to lie low in a sleepy little town called Greenest until this blows over.
7. On his deathbed, your father confessed that he had become involved in a group called the Cult of the Dragon. They paid him to smuggle goods across the Sword Coast. Wracked by guilt, he begged your to investigate the cult and undo the evil he may have helped foster. He urged you to begin your search in a town called Greenest.
8. The dragons destroyed everything you hold dear. They killed your family and destroyed your home. Now, with nothing but what you carry on your back and a horrid scar of the near fatal wounds you sustained in the attack, you seek revenge.
9. You and your family were members of the Cult of the Dragon, until your rivals in the cult arranged to wipe you out. Though they slaughtered your kin, you survived--but they think you're dead, and now is your chance for vengeance! Your hit list consists of three names: A human cultist named Frulam Mondath, a half-orc named Bog Luck, and a half-dragon named Rezmir. You have arrived in Greenest, knowing it's the next on the cult's list of targets.
10. You have a secret. You once were a gold dragon who served Bahamut. You were too proud and vain, to the point that Bahamut decided to teach you a lesson. You have been trapped in a weak, humanoid body, with your memories of your former life but a dim shadow. You remember only one thing with perfect clarity: Bahamut's command to go into the world and prove your devotion to the cause of good. If you prove worthy, on your death you will return to his side in your true form.

Below are two optional features that you can choose in place of the feature granted by your background.
Cult of the Dragon Infiltrator
You have infiltrated the ranks of the Cult of the Dragon. Having spied on the organization for quite some time, you are familiar with its inner workings and customs. You have a second identity as an initiate of the cult, enough of a facade to blend in as a simple grunt or servant.
Dragon Scholar
You have studied dragons and their lore for many years. You can automatically identify locations built or used by dragons, and you can identify dragon eggs and scales by sight. If you fail an Intelligence check to recall lore relating to dragons, you know someone or some book you can consult for the answer unless the DM rules that the lore is unknown.

Lantern Lodge

Two things

Zatqualmine:
Are those the same Redbrands from Lost Mine of Phandelver or is that just coincedence?

Ragnar:
Curious as to how you have a potion of healing when I asked everyone to take the starting equipment from your class/background.

Daway:
That was from the previous creation for another PbP application. I will pull it and update the background and bond. The Orc attack fits him perfectly.

Ragar's back story has been appropriately revised and his profile is now updated.

Hello!

I'm interested in joining you if you don't mind having someone who’s new to play-by-post gaming and 5e, though not to D&D (I’ve been playing and running one RPG or another since the days of the Holmes Basic Set). I can definitely commit to posting at least once a day during the week (probably in the evening), although it might be more difficult to post on the weekends.

I’m thinking of a Moon Elf Wizard from the Ardeep Forest, with a background as an Acolyte of Sehanine Moonbow. Since Sehanine is the Lady of Dreams, I thought that option #3 in your list of bonds would make a good fit.

I’ll start working up the character and try to have a profile posted by tomorrow night.

Cheers!

@DaWay, I was unaware I used the Redbrands in my backstory. I'll look into it, I do plan on incorporating a Bond from the campaign Probably #5 since it would tie in with the Urchin background.

Silver Crusade

I'll take the bond 10. I USED to be a dragon... (then I took an arrow to the knee XD)

Ok. I'd really like to roll up a Halfling Warlock who had always dreamed of being a wizard after his family was killed. Having no talent of his own he was sent away from his chosen academy in tears. That's when he was approached with another option.
Bond number 8 is best for me I think.

Lantern Lodge

Sounds good, it looks like we tentatively have:

Urchin Forest Gnome Rogue
Outlander Half-Orc Fighter

With 3 possible more.

...As far as character sheets just have an alias, please DO NOT link it to myth weavers. I have more trouble with that site then I care to admit.

Ragnar your Coins/Gems still seems off.

Where should we link them?

Lantern Lodge

As long as they are in your profile like Zat and Ragnar did that is fine for me.

Sweet. Thanks.

almost finished.

Lantern Lodge

In case you are wondering Common is going to be referred to as Chondathan (sp?) Illuskan is also spoken along the Sword Coast.

Fixed the Coin...ready to go, I believe.

Lantern Lodge

looks good Ragar.

Man, this looks like it's going to be most intelligent party ever. During your downtime I am envision debating the deeper questions in life, such as a bear pooping in the woods.

I thought I might give you another pitch to think about. My character pitch is an elven ranger, grandson of a noted dragon hunter, the late Colonel Beriel Jaedra... and recently laying low from the Cult of the Dragon's thugs (curse them!)

I've played a number of online games and am running 5e in face-to-face games. This would be my first real chance to try the game from the player side of the screen. That said, I would recommend giving priority to complete newbies for RPGing or play-by-post and wouldn't want my character pitch to cut out someone trying their first game.

Here is Gilandiril Celebrithil (Angus MacDeth’s submission), Moon Elf Wizard and Acolyte of Sehanine.

I’m working on his backstory, appearance, and a more detailed personality, which I hope to have finished in the next day or so. Briefly, however, his parents were refugees from the elven kingdom of Eaerlann (which was destroyed by orcs and demons), who settled in the Ardeep Forest. His father is a priest of Sehanine and his mother is a wizard. When they retreated to Evermeet, Gilandiril chose to stay in Ardeep. For the next hundred years or so, he served the priests who tended the Glen of Aloevan. Eventually, driven by the natural impulsiveness of his kind, he decided to leave Ardeep and travel the Sword Coast, allowing his dreams to guide his path. Recently, he has begun having the apocalyptic visions that have led him to the town of Greenest.

Anyway, I think I have all the mechanical details and features worked out and ready for review. This is my first profile here and my first time creating a 5e character (thanks to Ragar and Zat for the examples!), so please let me know if anything is missing or incorrect. I’ll check in again when I’ve posted Gilandiril's backstory and other details.

Cheers!

Welcome to the boards, Gilandiril! Once you get the template down, they are pretty easy to cut and paste for future applications.

I was hoping to throw in my hat as a high elf Draconic Scholar Sage. I would use the rogue class to portray him as an investigator. I would take the thief archetype.

I played a version of this character in a RL game, and he was a lot of fun. He's played as horribly awkward but competent and knowledgable.

I understand there's another rogue, but the characters would be very different.

Oh, I wanted to take bond number 7. I like the idea of the investigator having a criminal father.

Zat will be an Arcane Trickster rogue....

@Gilandiril Welcome to the boards!

Lantern Lodge

If you have prior knowledge of the Cult of the Dragon you know that they venerate dragons. More specifically evil dragons, particularly the dead ones, Dracolichs. If you have prior knowledge of the inner workings of the Cult you know a bit more.

I will be putting a closing date for applications on friday. I will make a decision by sunday and open the gameplay/discussion then.

Urchin Forest Gnome Rogue
Outlander Half-Orc Fighter
Acolyte V. Human Monk (incomplete)
Soldier Wood Elf Ranger
Acolyte High Elf Wizard
Sage High Elf Rogue (incomplete)

Incomplete submissions will be disregarded.

Lantern Lodge

If you don't want to make another alias, i understand. You may copy and paste the character into a post and that is fine with me.

Thanks. I can have build and back story up tonight. But I prefer not to build a profile until I know I've been selected.

Lantern Lodge

As it does not look like there is that much interest, I have decided that I will take the six of you. The thing is I won't start until the last two submissions are completed.

Silver Crusade

I am going to withdraw. This Semesters classes are taking more time than normal. Apologies.

Great...looking forward to it.

Lantern Lodge

Well then, we are just waiting on wicked_raygun

Urchin Forest Gnome Rogue
Outlander Half-Orc Fighter
Soldier Wood Elf Ranger
Acolyte High Elf Wizard
Sage High Elf Rogue (incomplete)

Awesome. It's good to be aboard.

Not much healing in this group.

Lantern Lodge

No, but there are ways around that. Gold to potions of healing, ranger selecting Cure Wounds or going spell-less ranger for the poultices, Magic Initiate feat, befriending the right NPC, clever tactics.

Who knows maybe the Sword Coast Adventurer's Guide will have some archetypes that will lend themselves to out-of-the-box healbots.

I take it recruitment is closed then?

There is always the healer feat....it helps. But honestly, the short rest mechanic helps with healing.

Lantern Lodge

Bodzilla if you can have a character made by tomorrow night, I'd love to take you on, especially since someone just withdrew. As you can see heals are in demand.

Crap. I'll see what I can do.

Lantern Lodge

If you still want to roll with the Warlock concept, that's fine, there are other ways of healing.

If I can't come up with a good idea, I'll go with that. I like clerics too so....

OK, my crunch here is done. Still need to finalize the headers and add a back story. But that should be done within the hour of me posting this, if not sooner.

Looking forward to the game.

This is Darius the high elf sage rogue.

Horizon Hunters

Wood Elf Rogue, going to Multiclass into a Warlock.

Hoard of the Dragoon Queen Bond: 2. When an orc raid drove your family from your home, the people of Greenest took you in. Anyone who threatens Greenest is your sworn enemy.

Well, it wasn't an Orc Raid, if you read my backstory, but it was the same concept

So we have three rogues?

Back story is done. Here it is.

Back Story:

Darius was a small child when the last Rage of Dragons took place. He can clearly remember running from his home along with his father and mother under the cover of darkness. He watched his mother stumble and then be consumed by acid from a black dragon’s breath. And then screaming…

The rest of the night was a blur to him, but according to his father he cried so much he passed out.

And so dragons became an obsession to him. And growing up he learned all he could about them. He went from library to library studying everything he could. And when books ceased to be useful, he became a field researcher and explorer.

A month ago he had received a sending telling him his father was dying. He rushed to his father’s side and stayed with him in his final hours. His father confessed that he had unknowingly become involved with a group called the Cult of the Dragon. Darius was shocked. Due to his studies, he was intimately familiar with duplicitous villains.

His father admitted that they paid him to smuggle goods across the Sword Coast. Wracked by guilt, he begged Darius to investigate the cult and undo the evil he may have helped foster. He urged him to begin his search in a town called Greenest.

After his father passed, Darius set out to Greenest.
