NPC bonus damage?

Dead Suns

Dark Archive

Many of the NPCs in Incident at Absalom Station have a +1 to their damage in their stat block, and I'm not sure why. For example, gangsters in the very first encounter all do 1d4+1 damage with their laser pistols. After running that encounter I felt like I was missing something that the players should have had, since they were just doing the base 1d4 with their laser pistols.

Anyone know where the extra +1 comes from? Am I missing something obvious?

The Exchange

This seems to be the case in all of the starfinder modules, that and really high +hit. I'm not sure why, maybe they changed mechanics after writing them.

In general, they seem to get a bonus to damage based on their CR, but they don't benefit from their ability scores.

Liberty's Edge

All NPCs of CR 1 or higher (or maybe CR 1/2 or higher, Goblins lack it, though) add their CR as bonus to damage (much as PCs do with their level starting at 3rd).

And NPCs are not made with remotely the same rules as PCs, which include higher to-hit and lower AC than a PC would have with their ability modifiers.

This is untrue, at least on damage. They add their Str mods to melee damage normally.

I was wondering about this, when the resident rules lawyer in my group queried it, I couldn't find an official reason.

That's because the Alien Archive (ie: the Bestiary equivalent with NPC creation rules) isn't out yet. I'm sure they're all legally created via that, the PC rules are just notably different from the NPC rules.

Sovereign Court Starfinder Creative Lead

Basically, NPCs (including monsters) add their CR to their damage to mimic the Weapon Specialization that PCs get. As Deadmanwalking said, the full rules for statting up NPCs will be in Alien Archive, which comes out in October.

The main thing too keep in mind here is that Starfinder is not Pathfinder, and in this game, stats for NPCs and monsters do not follow the same rules as those for PCs.
