Mythic Carrion Crown (my players keep out!)

Carrion Crown

Dark Archive

So, I'm getting ready to run Carrion Crown as a mythic campaign. Does anyone have any advice (aside from "Don't") that might be useful? I know that I want the fire in Book One to be the "mythic activation," but beyond that, I have no idea where to go.

In my experience, Carrion Crown wouldn't work all that well as a Mythic campaign. I'm regretting giving the group 25-point buy. ^_^

It's not because the scope isn't epic; it is, in various places. It's also very "un-mythic" at various points, though, making mythic trials a little hard to justify. It's more because the story seems to work best with the PCs as underdogs. The PCs should be tense in most fights, not crushing them handily.

That's my experience, anyway. Hopefully that's enough of a variation on "Don't". ^_^

That said, it's your campaign and you want to run it, so let's make it good!

I wouldn't ascend the PCs in Books 1 or 2. It would take a pretty vigorous rewrite to really justify it, in my opinion. I would have the Mythic ascension take place at one of these points:

-The Dusk Moth and the gift of Desna;
-The cleansing of Feldgrau;
-The defeat of the Dark Young and the banishing of Shub-Niggurath (probably the best, in my opinion)
-An custom side-trek tied to Adivion Adrissant, who you'll want to introduce early anyway.

How much do you know about your player-base at this point? Since you were planning to introduce Mythic in Book 1, how many tiers were you planning on granting?

Hmmm. Unfortunately I know my players pretty well and the answer to how many mythic tiers is, "a lot." I wanted to introduce the mythic rules to our next AP, and they chose Carrion Crown after that decision was made, but I may have to renege on that offer. Looking over the campaign, it seems that you are right about it working better as an underdog campaign. It's Gothic horror and the tension should be kept high, which is hard to do with mythic tiers.

In addition, I think that my group as a whole may be misunderstanding mythic tiers. They are looking at it like "epic-level play at 1st level," and I don't think that's how it works.

If you're more interested in the Mythic rules, I can give you some suggestions for other Paths that are more "thematically compatible". (Legacy of Fire and Serpent's Skull are the standouts, in my opinion.)

If you're more interested in staying with Carrion Crown, I can pass on some of what I've learned.

Whatever works for you and your players. ^_^
