Spellbooks as treasure and spontaneous casters

Rise of the Runelords

I have noticed that at various points in the AP it is spelled out what the various spellbooks of the NPC casters contain.

I think this is good and is certainly of great benefit to a PC wizard in the party.

But I am running the AP for a party with only spontaneous casters. So I am wondering if I should tweak things to be more relevant to them.

Also if anyone has already worked out the sell value of the various spellbooks that are found I would appreciate not having to add everything up.

Ugh. Spellbook values are a nightmare, especially with the number of spellbooks you get in RotRL. I was extremely thankful in later APs when they started putting in the values.

For spontaneous casters the Mnemonic Vestment allows them to use spellbooks to prepare spells. I felt it was a bit too weak (ONE prepared spell per day?), so I created my own pair of spectacles that allowed my player's sorcerer to prepare up to 3 spells using his own spell slots, whose levels could not add higher than 9.

It was *slightly* too powerful.

But maybe an item that allows a sorcerer to prepare ONE spell from a spellbook per day and use his or her own spell slots to cast that spell would be a nice treat.

Spellbook Prices:

Note: These spellbooks only contain the 0-level spells from the CRB unless specified in the NPC's statblock. If you wanted to include the 0-level spells from other sources, the prices would have to be adjusted accordingly.

Lyrie Akenja: 515 gp (257 gp, 5 sp)
Caizarlu Zerren: 954 gp (472 gp, 5 sp)
Mammy Graul: 1,805 gp (902 gp, 5 sp)
Barl Breakbones: 3,580 gp (1,790 gp)
Mokmurian: 71,310 gp (35,665 gp)

These are all I've gotten to, so far.

How are you doing spellbook values? Some of those values are a LOT higher than what I gave my PCs. I used this thread to do the calculations. Basically

0---------------5 gp
1---------------10 gp
2---------------40 gp
3---------------90 gp
4---------------160 gp
5---------------250 gp
6---------------360 gp
7---------------490 gp
8---------------640 gp
9---------------810 gp

Plus 15 gp for the book itself.

Liberty's Edge

Yeah, I should have been more clear. Mokmurian and Barl includes spells from the APG, UM, etc. Doing just CRB (and Inner Sea Magic) spells I get 36,715 gp for Mokmurian (he has 9 spell books) and 1,895 gp for Barl.

FYI (pardon the threadomancy) the spellbook in the sawmill (which was presumably stolen) is worth 635 base price (sell for half this)

SO:

spoiler:

Lyrie Akenja: 515 gp (257 gp, 5 sp)
Caizarlu Zerren: 954 gp (472 gp, 5 sp)
Justice Ironbriar: 635 (317 gp, 5 sp)
Mammy Graul: 1,805 gp (902 gp, 5 sp)
Barl Breakbones: 3,580 gp (1,790 gp)
Mokmurian: 71,310 gp (35,665 gp)
