First scenarios now that First Steps are retired?

GM Discussion

Hi folks,

Going to be running a home game by official PFS rules. Planned on doing We Be Goblins first, because they didn't have to make characters for it and also it'll let them have just a touch of spending money for their first "real" scenario. Plus it's awesome.

...Then what? I was thinking maybe "first steps" but only part 1 remains in play. Is it worth playing that by itself? Is it okay to play that with a character with one chronicle?

I've only played a handful of scenarios, and one of my four players has been at a table and received chronicles for each of the ones I've played, so I'd rather avoid those. What's a good list to take people through say 3rd level? I've seen lists back in 2012 with things like Master of the Fallen Fortress or Scenario #1 Silent Tide, but what do people do now?

Thank you in advance.

First Steps Part 1 is still legal. I would run that and The Confirmation as the first scenarios.

Well... I actually like to do them in this order:

First Steps:
Masters of the Fallen Fortress:
The Confirmation:

That way a PC can use the 2 PP from First Steps to pick up a wand for use in the other two - if you do MotFF first, it only gives 1 PP...

Or we might skip one of the first three and do one of the 1-2 Mods like Crypt of the Everflame or Murder's Mark. Depends on if the player wants to jump as fast as possible to 3rd level. (then you do one of the repeatables for a 2nd level PC - the one time you can play it as a 2nd - and that bumps you to 3rd.)

Good point...but aren't the player explicitly NOT pathfinders at the beginning of Master?

You can alter the beginning of MotFF so the PCs get a mission to check out the newly opened tower (it's just a roleplaying aspect, after all).
I like to play it in this order: MotFF -> First Steps 1 -> Confirmation.
That creates some nice storyline on how the characters become Pathfinders.

And to get back at one of the original questions: Yes, First Steps 1 is still a nice scenario to play without the other 2 parts. There are lots of nice roleplaying opportunities in it.

Doesn't Crypt of the Everflame come before Masters of the Flying Fortress?

If so, why play MotFF first?

because you either can't play it after (you're 2nd level then) or you can only play it once - with one 2nd level PC (depending on the judge - YMMV).

The other way around (MotFF first) you can play them both with any number of PCs (who will be 1st level for all of them, but 2.1 or 2.2 after).

At my lodge we usually try to do:

We Be Goblins - let the players get the evil out of their systems. And play it as though the PCs are studying about goblins at the Pathfinder Academy.

First Steps 1 - the players are close to graduation and going on some trial missions and meeting some of the potential VCs they will be getting assignments from as full Pathfinders.

The Confirmation - graduation has arrived and this is the final. Once the players are done, they are level 2 and official Pathfinders.

It's "Masters of the Fallen Fortress. And no, they are completely unrelated.

Crypt of the Everflame is the prequel to Masks of the Living God.

I have found the Many Fortunes of Grandmaster Torch (14) to be a good early game for characters - not as deadly as First Steps or Confirmation - though once you have a healing wand for first steps the game is much less deadly.

Also, once they have a couple games under their belt, Snows of Summer can be an interesting change on the low level game/module front.

This is the order in which I run them for brand new players:

• Master of the Fallen Fortress (This is how the players join the Pathfinder Society. Read the Spoiler here to see how this works).

• First Steps Part 1 (This is slightly modified to be a few tasks the Pathfinders in Training are asked to do).

• The Confirmation (This is their graduation exam into the ranks of trained Pathfinders).

Just a note here - there is a benefit to playing the Confirmation with a character with 0XP, so I would try and use that as the first intro mod you run.

My husband is partial to:

1. The Confirmation
2. One of the other repayable singles (First Steps, We Be Goblins, or Master of the Fallen Fortress)
3. Replayable Module (Murder's Mark, Godsmouth Heresy, or Crypt of the Everflame)

This gets the Confirmation 0 XP bonus, and gets the character to 5 XP with replayables.

The bonus for playing The Confirmation with 0 XP is not that big, though, so you shouldn't change everything around if you think it makes for a better story arc not to play it first.

Bonus for playing The Confirmation with 0 XP:
You get Wayfinder enhancements for 1 PP less (minimum 1 PP)

Masks of the Living God! That's the one I was thinking of. Whoops.
