Why do some people constantly move the goalposts?

Oh, it must be a terrible, terrible feeling, considering how ridiculous people are ready to show themselves so as not to admit they are wrong. If I ever were wrong, for some truly exotic reason, I think I would consider it the worst feeling of my life.

...to a vehicle, for ease of movement.
