Reign of Winter, Curse of the Crimson Throne and Second Darkness

Pathfinder Adventure Path General Discussion

I'm currently in the beginning of Rise of the Runelords for my personal Pathfinder group. My friend has finished her game at the local game shop, and I was thinking about picking up a few sessions while she plans out her next game a few months from now. Most likely I will only be going with the first book for the group before she's ready, MAYBE the second. I have looked at all three and they are interesting to me, so I ask you, oh almighty Paizo forums.

How would you rate the first books of the three APs?

What order would you think is better for a full campaign AP, in terms of personal preference and why?

Should I just run the same AP I pick up for the temporary GM spot with my actual group, even though my friend who is the GM MIGHT be playing in it, and is also in my outside-of-game-shop group?

What is the circumference of a moose?!

I've not run the others, but Shadow in the Sky was awesome fun, and I believe has a reputation for being so. Children of the Void is pretty good, and doesn't have the jarring change of tone some of the later parts do, said change of tone being one of the most common criticisms I've seen of Second Darkness.

I too would recommend Second Darkness if you are only going to run the first two books of an AP. Curse of the Crimson Throne is too good a story to chop up into bits, and Reign of Winter may turn out to be the same (it's not completely out yet).

Like YogoZuno said, there's a change of tone between SD 2 and 3. In the first two parts, the party can be the sort of mercenary scum that is attracted to Riddleport (okay, Cypher Mage-wannabes too). From SD 3 and onwards, it's all about working to save the world from a second Earthfall. (I've always thought that the best way to connect the two parts was to have reports of the events of SD 1+2 reach the party which is to play through SD 3-6.)

This idea is so awesome, I'm actualy thinking of picking SD as the next AP I run, and it has some tough competition with Reign of Winter and Carrion Crown...

Be sure to tranquilize the moose before you measure it. Moose get ornery and violent if you get close to them.

Just be warned that some other adjustments will most likely have to be made, depending upon how your players (and their characters) will re-act to certain situations.

For example, SD 4 puts the party into a covert intelligence-gathering operation "behind enemy lines", something which could challenge the alignment of paladins and similar characters. SD 5 could result in the party asking themselves: "why do we want to save these --- at all?!?" Check the Second Darkness AP forum for ideas, suggestions, and ways to smooth the way a bit.

This. Books 1+2 together are pretty good for Second Darkness, but only playing books 1+2 are a waste for Curse. Curse is widely regarded as one of the best APs, if not the best.
