Quarterstaff Positive / Negitve Energy

So one of my players is playing a quarterstaff focused monk. He is not much of a power gamer and his character is very focused on achieving balance.
I am looking at creating a quarterstaff that on one side deals positive energy and on the other negative.
Basically
1d6(+1d6 Positive)/1d6(+1d6 Negative) x2

How much should something like this cost. Would it make sense to make it require that the target be a threat so that the character doesn't have an eternal heal stick? or perhaps make it so that by the end of the day, you have to deal equal amounts of positive and negative energy otherwise the quarterstaff will reduce the wielder to 1 hitpoint.


If it required a balance be paid, I could see it being a great boon to the group when fighting living creatures since it would provide heals afterwards, but could be really deadly if you were fighting undead because you would have to pay a large amount of negative energy owed at the end of the day.


Any imput is much appreciated.


If you have access to the Weapons of Legacy 3.5 book, there is an item, called the Scales of Balance, that is exactly and precisely what you are looking for. I don't have my copy any more, could someone else here help?
