We are going to play Academy of Secrets tonight with level 13 pre-mades. Do they need to be registered with PFS for our low level registered PFS characters to get the XP?

Yes you do. Or maybe I misread the question. Level 1 characters - yes register. Level 13 copy - no don't register. It sounds like you do not already have legal, level 1 PFS characters registered so, think of the process involved this way:

  • Create your level 1 character, register it.
  • Create a 13th level copy of that character and play the mod.
  • You will apply the Chronicle to your level 1 character, which hopefully takes it to level 2 if you earned full XP.
  • Your GM will report the PFS ID of the level 1 character.

Same with Iron Medusa, however you would technically be able to do a full rebuilt from level 1 to level 14 if you found some of your choices didn't work so well on the 13th level copy. However, if you were happy with the 13th level copy you could just level it up 1 level to 14 and go from there.

Hope that made sense, have fun! :)

Two of my players have PFS characters, the other two do not. They are going to make level one characters and register them tonight. We made completely different level 13 character not based on our currently active PFS characters. The rules seemed to suggest that was okay.

I'm actually running both adventures and will need to apply the XP to my PSF character. Just trying to make everything is legit. This is my first time running anything for PFS. I already registered the event.

Yes, based on the wording in the instructions for the 13th and 14th level modules, I'd say you're correct. You just make a new 13th or 14th level PFS legal character to play the modules with, but you apply the credit to one of your actual PFS registered characters. There's nothing in the instructions that says it has to be a higher level version of the actual registered character (although most people will probably choose to go that route).

Hmmmm. I guess I need to read these things more carefully :)

Yes, whatever I said before is rubbish and I should have re-read the actual document instead. Sorry for the confusion.

Create a level 13 character, then apply the Chronicle to any other legal PFS character you have registered.

Quote:
If a player instead uses a new 13th-level Pathfinder Society character, she may apply credit to any one of her Pathfinder Society PCs of 11th level or lower. A GM who runs a module may likewise apply credit to any one of her Pathfinder Society PCs of 11th level or lower. The decision of which character to apply credit to must be made when the Chronicle sheet is received and signed by the GM.

Yeah, I think it all boils down to personal choice. I, for one, prefer to just make a 13th level version of said character and run it with them, but if someone wants to make an entirely different character then as far as I can tell, they're perfectly able to.
