Adjustment to Tides of Dread [Minor Spoilers]

Stupid Post Monster - Grrr...

I've taken my group through about half of Here There Be Monsters, but I'm looking ahead to the next module.

I have a situation that requires a small rewrite. My party absolutely refused to take any of the NPCs with them on their trek across the island. They felt the civilians were safer holed up in the wreck of the Wyvern than marching the length of the island, and I can't say I blamed their decision.

At this point I'm trying to figure out what to do about the Kopru Druid who has taken up residence in the wreck. Clearly the Kopru could wipe the floor with the colonists, but I don't want to have the PCs come back to a ship full of dead folks.

I'm thinking that the kopru would observe from a distance. After a short time, he uses his Dominate ability to take control of one of the colonists. I'm thinking he compels the thrall to kill the other colonists. The enslaved colonist is subdued or killed by the other members of the crew. After that, the Kopru attacks in earnest. I'm thinking that perhaps the survivors make a run for it and are now scraping by in the edge of the jungle and the Kopru has a new lair.

When the PCs show up they have the fun of killing the Druid, and ALSO the satisfaction of saving the castaways (though I'm still trying to decide what sort of welcome they would receive after all of that).

Any thoughts to flesh this out or take it in a new direction are most welcome. At this point I'm still brainstorming.


This happened in my game. I decided that a few NPCs (including ones the PCs knew decently well, but not favorites) had been killed, that Capt. Venkalie was dominatred and standing watch on the ship, and that Lirith was leading the remaining NPCs, most of whom were living in trees a few hundred yards inland. (The higher-level ones maintained a rotating watch from the shore for the returning PCs, and for any trouble from the occupied wreck of the Sea Wyvern.)

I suppose that the NPCs would flee at the first sign of battle should the kopru come into the ship.
At the same time I don't see why the kopru should use such finesse...
If the Kopru wants the ship for himself all he needs is to show up and maybe kill a couple of passengers..

I would make the party find the survivors a few miles away from the wyvern, foreshadowing what kind of enemy they will face in the wyvern.

You can also put in an additional encounter with one of the 7 big dinosaurs hunting for the NPCs(I can't remember how they are called nor where are they listed)

I think my respone would have been similar to Sben, with the primary exception that I would have dominated Avner Merivanchi. Likely the dominated NPC will need to be killed off as part of the combat against the kopru, and this way they won't have nearly as much guilt. :)

Plus, goodness knows Avner is relatively weak willed and easy to dominate. Amella Venkalie was quite a bit tougher (at least in our group, ymmv).

Have the kopru dominate Avner, have Avner kill or try to kill the NPC's you like least, or have the least role left to play (like Feres if he's still alive), and the rest flee to the island to live a Robinson Crusoe-esque survival existence, with the minor complication of dinosaurs running amok. Sounds like fun to me! :)

I chose Amella for exactly the opposite reason—to add a tactical dimension to the encounter, force them to figure out how to deal with a dominated ally. Good practice for Golismorga, if nothing else.
