Paizo Employee Chief Technical Officer

I got to see a sneak preview of Serenity on Monday.

I think the vast majority of people who come to the Paizo messageboards are going to love this film. So, if you're reading this go see it. Whether or not you've seen Firefly.

Yeah, but is it STAR WARS good, like Lisa says?

: )

I saw it last night.

I thought it was pretty good. As for being Star Wars good, I can say that it DID have the same light-hearted, swashbuckling tone of the first movie. . . as well as the gritty, run-down feel of the outer planets. Granted, Star Wars is working from a different set of mythologies, but Serenity's archetypes are just as relevant, especially given this country's history. Maybe it's a decent comparision.

I like the character of the ship itself, somehwat similar to the Millinium Falcon . . . after all, the Falcon pretended to be garbage, and the Serenity pretended to be. . . well, no spoilers here, but it's gross!

If there's any downside, it would have to be the acting. They were definitely TV actors, and not good ones at that. Considering the number of cool camera moves and interesting tableaus generated with this movie, it seems like the Director could take the time and expense to do a couple retakes here or there with some of the simpler dialgoue scenes. The hippy, mechanic lady was particularly groan-worthy. She sounded like she was trying to do an American Pie/nerdy-band girl impression, and failing.

Other than that, I thought the movie was very entertaining. It was good enough to make me think about geting ahold of the series, but I doubt it will be a DVD purchase.

I agree with the lycanthropic platapus on this one, at least for the most part. I saw it last Sunday, and enjoyed it, although I don't think it's worthy of a DVD purchase, though. It was pretty good though, and I think the actors did do an okay job. Overall, if you're on these boards, you'd probably like it.

Well as it relates to this film I would have to disagree with everyone here. Is it Star Wars worthy? Nope...It's better. It actually relies on story as opposed to half baked borrowed themes and pedantic characters. Not only do I think it sets the new standard I would most assuredly own the DVD.

Which one? Which episode number and/or version where you refering too? Because if we're talking Attack of the Clones (original-non-Imax-theatrical-with-the-goofy-grinning-Kip-Fisto-tragic-dial ogue-C3PO-one-liners) then Leonard Part 6 is a real contender for the "Star Wars good" title.

Serenity sold me on Firefly. I love the movie and have begun renting the Firefly DVDs. I'm up to number three and it's love! I hate Buffy, and really hate Angel, but bless Joss Wheaton this show is just wonderful. It's witty and even funny--like have to pause the DVD I'm laughing so hard funny--while at the same time capable of incredible gloom and actual horror. The characters are wonderful and I personally love the actors (strangely the acting is actually much better on the show than Serenity...weird).

Star Wars, on the other hand, functions on the principle of evens and odds...every even numbered one is good, the odd ones stink.

Phantom Menace: Yargarifically bad.

Attack of the Clones: What the whole pretrilogy should have been!

Revenge of the Sith: Wanted to cry and burn down the theater at the same time, but thought better of it cause I wouldn't be able to find the fire exit with my puffy tear filled eyes.

New Hope: A bit dated by modern standards, but only a bit and after all this time! The new Lucas remake was just a joke however and stains my video cabinet with its filthsome blight.

Empire Strikes Back: The downer Star Wars film with no real beginning or end, just kindova saggy heroes-getting-rears-handed-to-them middle. Oh and the sets were ultra super cheesy to boot. The Lucas remake actually helped redeem this one from lame to fair. "No Disintegrations!" the cheesiest Vader line ever...crawl under my seat bad.

Return of the Jedi: What the original series was all about, Lucas at the top of his game. Hard to add anything to it without hurting it...proven alas by Lucas when adding the worm with duck lips to the Sarlaac!

The Exchange

I think the movie would have been just okay if I hadn't seen the series yet. However, having seen the series, I thought the movie was pretty good. I mean, not excellent, but still really good, especially since a lot of the movie included things that would be missed by anyone who hadn't seen the series.

I thought the ending was a bit wierd. I mean, not the overall end to the movie, but a lot of the things that happened and changed among the characters; it just didn't have the best feel to it.
