Thorn grew up on the streets of Magnimar. He joined a gang at a very early age, and worked for his food by stealing, scouting, and acting as lookout. The ringleader took most of what the gang made, and Thorn and the rest of the gang was always on the brink of starvation. They were his family though, and gave him his name - 'Rat'. He was caught with the hands in the pocket of a passing cleric, who seemed very interested at the leaf-shaped birthmark on the back of his right hand. He was packed off to the temple in Sandpoint, initially scared that he was going to be punished for his crimes.
At Sandpoint, he eventually fel in. He skipped a good bit of the lessons on religion and what he derogatively reffered to as 'the book stuff', but spend plenty of time nurturing his connection to the plants around him.
He's suspicious of people in general and has a particularly ungenerous view of merchants, bankers, and people who own stuff and make money by trade in general - experience tells him that they're greedy and uncaring.
This, in turn, fuels a casual disregard for the right to possess stuff. He won't steal from people who seem poor or who he respects, but he'll absolutely snatch stuff he wants from people he passes.
