Background:

Goran is the disgraced son of a proud family of blacksmiths. One day about ten years ago, the king came to his father's shop with a request. They talked a while, and once the business was done, the two old friends turned more personal matters. The blacksmith brought out his family to show the king, especially his two sons, who were skilled at the forge in their own right, but when working together could easily surpass his own skill. The elder of the two, Goran, have had always been cautious with his words, and prone to disastrous slips whenever he wasn't, and this time was no different. The king stayed for dinner, having left his daughter and heir to oversee the kingdom for the day. Gradually over the course of the dinnner, despite, or maybe because of, the younger brother (Torekk)'s attempts to hold his attention, coaxed Goran out of his shell, until Goran finally tried to make a joke, but stumbled over his words so terribly, and managed to affect the wrong visage for a joke so completely, that instead of a joke he declared vehemently that the king was "a spineless orc-kisser not fit to wear a beard". The king, of course, did not take well to this. He hacked off Goran's beard with his dagger, a birthday present some 30-odd years ago from Goran's own father, and declared him exiled. Goran was to be out of the city by the time the sun rose above the surface. Torekk, being stubborn even for a dwarf, insisted on going with, and they left together, after a tearful farewell to their parents, and a promise to look after each other. They left the city before most of its industrious inhabitants were even awake.

They wandered the Iron Pines for a few years, neither having anything remotely approaching the woodcraft to find their way out of the foreboding woods, but they were skilled fighters with excellent steel, and fought like they worked, in perfect harmony. Even more powerful creatures quickly became wary of the duo. Sadly, there were still plenty of creatures more powerful than even the Brothers Derbelslag, and one day they happened upon a rather cranky hag. She took one look at them, and flung a curse at Goran, but Torekk jumped in the way, and was laid low. Enraged, Goran's axes took her where she stood, cutting down the formidable foe in a display of pure skill that, looking back, he doubts to ever match, but the damage was done, a horrible wasting curse had been lain upon poor Torekk.

For fifteen days and fourteen nights Goran sought civilization and aid, while Torekk clung tenaciously to life. On the fifteenth night, Torekk died, unable to even say farewell to his beloved brother. Not five minutes had passed before riders came into grief-stricken Goran's camp. Humans, claiming he was in Imperial lands, demanding his business there. Goran began to explain his tale, but one of the trio of riders found his brother's body. They laughed. "Hah, this idiot's been to the Iron Pines," one guffawed. "Serves him right, going to that gods-forsaken... He was the first to die. Enraged, Goran once again fought beyond his skill, killing the man, and then his comrade. The last one barely escaped with his life, and took the town priest's full allotment of spells to heal. Goran buried his brother with his gear, and spent the next few days mourning. He offered no resistance when the scout finally worked up the courage and men to return and arrest him.

Appearance:

Goran is tall for a dwarf, but not skinny. He stands four feet and four inches tall, and weighs two hundred pounds. Goran is severely disfigured by burns from a forging experiment gone awry, but he is proud of them, despite keeping them mostly hidden. Goran's hands are rough, but nimble, the hands of a warrior and artisan. His flame-red hair and beard are streaked with silver, the side-effect of some spell or another he endured in the Iron Pines, and the only redeeming feature of his appearance. What's left of his face is hideous to say the least, with half an over large nose, one ragged ear, beady black eyes, and an actually rather normal mouth, somehow untouched by the carnage of his body. Needless to say, his jailers insisted he keep his cloak, and have the hood up at all times.

Personality:

Goran is not gifted with words in the slightest, and after the completely innocent comment that saw him exiled from his homeland, he not to speak at all. He barely bothers to communicate at all since his brother died, but will gradually get over it, and eventually begin to speak again, if only to the rest of the party. Goran cares little for the law after his exile by his king, and would likely try to kill him if he saw the dwarf again. He will however, always keep his word when he gives it, which is a very rare occasion indeed. After the events of the last decade, Goran is very intense when roused, but otherwise rather apathetic. He genuinely cares for others however, even other dwarves, though he is wary and uncomfortable around them, and one of the surest ways to rouse him is to endanger an innocent.
