Owen Stephens continues to prove he's one of the best in the industry

5/5

Just checked out Owen Stephens' Genius Guide to the Dragonrider, after his ‪#‎microfeats‬ post this morning on FB. If dragonriders are something that interest you, you need to have this. If you're on the fence about dragonriders, you should seriously consider picking this up. Owen's "focus" mechanic is a brilliant way to balance out, not only the number of actions the PC/dragon can take in a round, but the power you're dealing with. It's a mechanic I wish they had incorporated into familiars, summoned creatures, animal companions, etc. Nothing slows down play like a druid with a companion who has just summoned a several metric tons of claws and teeth.

The dragonriders themselves are decent in a fight (Full BAB, monk-like saves), but only wear light armor, have limited weapons and very limited selection of spells. Still, these features compliment their companion well. The focus is on the dragonrider/dragon combo, not one or the other. Even the explanation behind why an intelligent dragon would bond with a humanoid rider makes sense, game-wise at least.

Broken

I like the pose and paint scheme of the mini, but she arrived broken off the base. I've tried to reattach her, but will have to glue her back.

Disappointed

This figure had very little detail and was quite disappointing, particularly for the price. Having said that, the Ameiko figure was very nice. I will be taking a closer look at the figures before purchasing others.

Exactly what I've been looking for

5/5

The detailed reviews above cover the contents of this product in detail, so I won't go into them yet again. What I'll tell you is that as 35 year gamer with a degree in marine biology, running entirely submerged campaigns has been a dream. I've picked up every marine supplement I can find and Cerulean Seas is the clear winner. Followed by Azure Ice, Indigo Seas and Waves of Thought, this is a great series that deserves recognition.

Forsaken Lands

5/5

The content of the swamp map is useful for any genre of game. It is devoid of humanoid bodies, ancient statues or other genre-specific items yet includs a very helpful additional card that could make it sci-fi/supers focused if you wanted. A brilliant idea. The layout of the swamp map allows for a wide variety of cover, terrain and exploration options and is beautifully constructed. Lastly, and most importantly in my mind, is that the exits and water features along the top and bottom of the map match. Which means you can layout two of these maps, one on top of the other, to create a believable amount of larger map space.

My only request would be to leave off the text descriptions of what each area is (campsite, swamp caves, etc). I think it clutters the beauty of the map and breaks the 4th wall for the players.
