BACKGROUND
------------------
Proteus never knew his parents. He was raised in a monastary by strict regimen and given the highly respected responsibility as apprentice to the master healer of the monastary at the young age of five.

He has spent the majority of his thirty-five years learning the knowledge and art of caring for the sick and wounded as he traveled with his mentor, Nikolaos. Once he reached the age of thirty, Nikolaos deemed him worthy of of journeyman status and Proteus headed out into the world to combat sickness and cure the ills of the innocent.

For the last five years, Proteus has practiced his art without pay while mending the occassional tool, hide, or other implement to earn a meager living. With five years of experience using his ability for good, Proteus has decided it is time to engage in more difficult and rewarding work to ensure his place as master healer.

ASCLEPIUS

Spoiler:

Who is Asclepius? The short answer is that Ascplepius is a seeker of knowledge. His intellect leads him in the pursuit of deciphering the secrets of that which is not known and amassing information regarding that which is already.

The beginning of his life was that of luxury. His noble family had stayed loyal to The Invincible Overlord during the Wellborn Uprising. Life was easy, as he was never considered of value in combat due to his slight frame not to mention the influence of his father. Asclepius spent the beginning of his life as a victim to the usual distractions afforded the wealthy. Wine, women and song occupied his nights and his days were spent in other hollow pursuits. One day, he passed by the parlor and heard his mother talking to one of the family maids within. He overheard her saying that his father was not expected to live through the winter. The white plague would consume him before the return of spring. Asclepius had heard his father's wretched cough, but had thought nothing of it. For the next three months, he watched his father waste away, helpless to aid him in any way. One day, when his father's health was particularly poor, he took a walk through the streets of the city. He realized his family was not the only to be touched by illness or disease. Suddenly, he saw the world full of sorrow, pain, and distress. He determined that he would no longer squander his talents on life's distractions. Instead he would devote his life to the easing the pain and ailments of man.

For years, Asclepius visited priests, doctors, medicine men and shamen. He maintained the belief that even the most barbaric of healers would have something to teach him. He became known along his travels to be able to completely cure even the deadliest disease for those he tended. He requested no consideration or recompense for the service he provided. Relying on honest labor or the generosity of those he aided to survive.

There came a time, when the Invincible Overlord himself came to him for aid. The Overlord had found himself in a protracted battle with the Emporer that later became known as The Demon Seige. Asclepius, moved by the desire to save the lives of those who fought in duty, agreed to the Overlord's request. He agreed on the condition that he would be placed wherever the blades were to be the most bloodied. Asclepius' skills in saving lives became legendary.

Five years did Asclepius toil amongst the battle injured until the Overlord stood on the doorstep of the Emporer who released a host of demons upon those he fought against. There came a day, as the army of the Overloard was the closest to the Emporer, that a host of demon's was brought against the Overlord's army. Word rushed through the ranks that the leader was none other than the Demogorgon himself. A brave paladin of Pelor, named Propedi, waded out into battle to face the Demogorgon. Though he fought bravely, he was no match for the Demon Prince and suffered a terrible blight. The army of the Overlord lost it's morale and were pursued from Verdistan. During the withdrawal, Asclepius did all he could for the dying champion, but for all of his knowledge was unable to save the life of the paladin.

Asclepius fell into a deep depression, convinced that his life's work was meaningless. It is during this time that Asclepius was visited by Pelor in a dream. Pelor told the healer that it was his duty to found several monastaries, so that his knowledge would not be lost. With new meaning for his life, Asclepius did as he was asked and spent the rest of his life as a teacher, starting up several monastaries in remote locations hidden from the world.

What became of Asclepius is a mystery. It is agreed that it came one day that Asclepius received the call of Pelor to embark upon a mission of healing and mercy although he would not share the details with any of the priests he had personally trained. One of the high priests of the initially founded monastary teaches that Asclepius returned at the end of his life and was laid to rest in a buriel chamber in the catacombs beneath, but this is refuted by his peers outside of his sect.

To this day, the locations of these monastaries are closely gaurded secrets only shown to those who display a desire for knowledge and the ability to care for the ills of the world. Individual monastaries are run independently by the priests, none knowing the exact locations of the others. This is done with the purpose that should the world turn against knowledge, as has happened in the past; all would not be comprimised with the destruction of one as the others need not fear the location of their temple being discovered.
