Background What was your childhood like? Lysander was born in Oppara, the gilded capital of Taldor. His father was an Ulfen Guard warrior and his mother was a Taldan swashbuckler that served in the Zimar Corsairs. His father was originally from Broken Bay in the lands of the Linnorm Kings and was a renowned fighter, but he was forced to flee after soldiers of King Ingimundr the Unruly tried to arrest him for insulting the monarch during a particularly wild night of drinking, and he killed one of them. He made his way to Taldor and eventually joined the Ulfen Guard, meanwhlie meeting and falling in love with Lysander's mother, a beautiful Taldan woman who was in Oppara to purchase supplies before returning to Zimar; they were soon married. His father served three years in the Ulfen Guard, but then Lysander was born. His father decided to retire from the Guard, taking with him, as was custom, all the treasure he could carry from the royal treasure horde, and his wife agreed to similarly retire from the Navy. They moved to the small town of Heldren, where they hoped to quietly raise their son and live off the wealth of their careers. So it was that Lysander's earliest years were spent in joy and easy living with his mother and father, and he was always a well-liked and popular boy in the town, albeit a bit of a light-hearted troublemaker from time to time. However, when Lysander was 12 his father was killed by an assassin most likely sent by Ingimundr. This left a dark mark on Lysander, and the next night he decided he would take down his father's sword from the mantle and set out and take vengeance upon his father's killers. But as he took down the sword, his bare arms suddenly welled up with blood, as if slashed by unseen thorns, and the sword burned his hands as if it were red hot, forcing him to put it back quickly. At the same time, he heard a voice, telling him, “Not Yet. When you are ready, this sword will be yours, and when you have served your purpose, so too will be vengeance. ” He did not know what god or goddess it was that had spoken to him, but he understood the message. From that moment on he began to train in swordplay with his mother, using another estoc that his mother had crafted for him, while his father's masterfully crafted weapon remained on the mantle. However, the scars like thorn-cuts remained on his arms, as if he was magically marked, and in times of stress he spoke in tongues. Five years passed, and as they did he slowly also began to develop other, more divine abilities. He could heal wounds, and repair broken things. Eventually he could create water or light, and sense the presence of magic. Finally he took down the sword, and this time he was filled with a feeling of comfort. It was at the age of 17 that Lysander began his career as an adventurer. What is your relationship to the gods and religion? Lysander is unsure of what deity granted him his oracular powers, so he reveres many gods and goddesses, with particular affinity for Cayden, Desna, Kurgess, Milani, and Shelyn. He respects all the gods, though at times he questions their methods. What is your physical appearance, bearing, mannerisms, and quirks? Lysander is a huge man, standing 6'6” and weighing 250 pounds. He has black, curly hair, but bright blue eyes, and he leaves his scarred arms bare. He keeps his hair short and his face clean. Do you have an easy way with strangers? Lysander is easy-going by nature, and generally makes friends easily, though having little experience in the field he is generally nervous around beautiful women. Do you play well with others? Lysander always had many friends growing up, although he is less close to them since he began his intense training a few years ago. What draws you to the life of an adventurer? Lysander wants to fulfill the purpose he was told about so many years ago, and then someday take vengeance on his father's murderer. Do you identify with a particular animal or element? Lysander remembers seeing an elephant when he was a little boy, and has always wanted to someday see a mammoth. He also has always loved growing things, flowers in particular. What do you find creepy? He was always frightened in his youth of the tales of the fey his father told, wicked creatures that would snatch away babies from cradles and drink their blood until they turn into icicles. His mother always laughed at these stories, as the only few they knew in Taldor were dryads and satyrs and other less wicked (though no less dangerous) creatures. What specific goals do you have, if any? Become the greatest swordsman in Avistan, fulfill the purpose that the gods have for him, and take vengeance upon Ingimundr the Unruly. What secrets do you have? He has a lot of difficulty reading text (likely caused by dyslexia), which causes him embarrassment, so he hides that fact from others as much as possible. What does someone else know about you that you do not? Lysander is really easy to read, and wears his emotions on his sleeves (if he wore sleeves, that is). He is more impatient and impulsive than he would admit, despite his dedication to his training over the last few years. Do the ends justify the means? Lysander is unsure about the answer to this question, just as he is unsure whether he likes the methods the gods use. |
