About Benjamin "Buck" Stevens

You’re the son of a fifth generation ca le rancher deep in the heart of Texas. You learned at a very young age that nothing is ever simple in life, and that you had to work hard for every inch you gained and even harder to keep it.
You exploded onto the sports scene during high school as a star athlete where football soon became your true sport of choice. Your physique and skills broadened exponentially as did your ego and attitude towards those you called “smart folk,” up until you needed a tutor to graduate high school.
Many collegiate scholarships were thrown your way but since your entire family graduated from East Texas University, it was preordained that you too spread your wings and become a Fighting Raven. With a full ride to ETU, you haven’t decided on a major yet but as far as you’re concerned, there’s plenty of time to figure that out...right after
football season.

Buck earned his nickname when he was seven, the first time he'd tried to "run off to the big city". He'd proved his stubbornness by walking, on his own, for three days in what he'd assumed was the right direction, becoming part of a statewide amber alert.

Mule-headed wasn't a strong enough term to describe Benjamin Stevens. More like a rodeo bull who had to be repeatedly broke, he was always bucking against the yolk of his father's iron rule on the old homestead.

Nothing was easy, and you had to work for everything. Nobody gave you nothing without wanting something. You don't work, you don't eat. Pay attention to me when I'm talking. Your mom worked hard to make that, and you'll damn well eat it. Quit struggling, you have this coming.

So when Buck found a way to make the old man proud- and escape work and home life alike- by playing football, he threw himself into it. His "Golden Ticket" was writing itself before his eyes. So when this all threatened to come crashing down because Buck was unable to concentrate on the necessary amount of homework on top of all the other things he had going- athletics, chores, etc.- he did the unthinkable. He befriended some geeks.

At first, it was Alfred "Alfalfa" Fletcher- the king of the nerds himself. It was a clichéd story straight outta Hollywood. Jock and Nerd find friendship helping each other to learn. By hanging out with Alfred, Buck was exposed to the truth: he wasn't as stupid as everyone- really, everyone- had always thought. He had some real issues with the way learning was structured in the Public School system, but he could learn. He went from barely passing to solid Cs in a single semester, and even managed to get a B or two on occasion.

Through the course of it all, as his body underwent the teenage metamorphosis, he continued to grow bigger and stronger, more lithe and agile, and his football team gained the benefit of his drive.

Now, out of High School, and away from his home, he knows he has to succeed- both on the field and academically- in order to make the escape permanently. Still, even knowing he has the tools to free himself, a nagging doubt creeps into his often sleepless nights- his father, grandfather, great grandfather- did they have the same hope when they were Freshmen here? He sees their pictures on the walls, the trophies they won. Did they think they were free once too?
