Backstory:

Kib grew up in the town of Riddleport after his tribe was attacked for a crime the local goblins did. His tribe was cleared of the crime after the goblins made another attack, but Kib was the lst of his tribe. Riddleport was as kind to him as any of the poor; not at all. And in return he was unkind to the city. Each night the young boy went out and broke windows, and defaced statues. His attacks were ended, not by the city guard, but by a cleric; of Shelyn.

Swinging his stick, smashing the right arm off the statue to Desna, he felt good. He swigged back, but dropped his stick as he was pulled to the ground by his ear. Looking up into the eyes that would make a dragon piss himself; that Kib did. The woman drags him across the thruway into the shrine to Shelyn, then into a small, barring room. Not even a window, only four stone walls and a well crafted dark wood door. The only other path to the outside world was a tiny hole at the top of one of the walls.

She leaved Kib in shock but soon returns; with what looked like a club and a dagger. As he covers his face he screams out. "Don't eat me. Me all bones and scales!"
Looking up, he sees the dagger nearing his face. He quickly recovers his face and loses what was left in his bowls. "Don't skin me ether. Scales not good. Very poor. Would make bad armor."
After waiting for the blow to land, and not feeling it, he again lowers his claws.
There in front of him the woman is holding out the club and the dagger. She drops them on the ground and looks into his eyes before speaking. "Child. You will remain in this room till you learn to hate what you did. That carving knife and blocks of wood will be your only companions."
She left, closing the door. Leaving him to sleep in the mess he made. He woke up the next day with a bucket of water hitting him. Looking around he found a few more buckets of water, some wash cloths and a mop in one corner. In another corner is a pile of wood. At the door is the woman holding an empty bucket she drops to the ground. "Clean yourself up and keep your room clean. Then get to work or you will be here a long time."

She left Kib again and locked the door. Each day she would come with a tiny, tasteless, meal and replace the buckets and add more wood. After a time she allowed him a small metal bowl and food supplies to cook for himself. At 1st Kib would just cut at the wood at random. However, soon he started to try to carve out shapes. Then make objects out of the wood. Sometimes he would use what little trapmaking he knows to make mini deadfall traps. While other times he would just make whatever object came to mind. Weeks went by before he found he could use the water to help bend the wood slowly. Soon he forgets why he was in the room; just spending all day crafting. The once barren room's walls was now covered with shelves filled with little art and devices.

At the end of one year the cleric spoke again to Kib.
cleric: "If all this was taking away and burned, then how would you feel?"
Kib: *A look of anger* "I would hate you."
Cleric: "How do you think others felt about what you did before coming to this room?"[b]
Kib: *looks down at his claws* [b]"Hate me"

Cleric: "How do you feel about yourself now?"
Kib: "Me hate, me."
Cleric: *smiles* "Don't. You are not the same as you once had been. As a cleric of Shelyn I decade you a Journeyman Carpenter." *She looks over at some of the traps and other devices that Kib made.* "...And I think I know a path in your work that may fit you well."

They walk out of the room together. For the next few days, she and Kib met with one of her friends in the guard and trained him in to uses and repair of their ballistaes.

After his training was finished she turned to him. "Riddleport is not in need of anyone with your skills and you still need a lot of work to become a skilled master. Nonetheless, ships are always in need of someone to keep them afloat and safe."

Kib joined on the 1st ship that would take him, but soon after setting sail he learned that his job would also be Surgeon.
By the time they reached Port Peril, he no longer got sick from patching up the crew.
