“Look, Naerah. See how the destructive heat can transform the sand into something beautiful? So too can magic be used to create and transform, rather than destroy.”

It was a brave and foolish man who decided to move to Desertsands based on the rumors that its surrounding sand had a high concentrate of the minerals he sought. But this is not his story.

Rather, this is the story of the unassuming child he brought with him, a daughter, named Khazima al-Nadra, after her late mother. She was a curious child, always crying over her burned feet from spending too much time barefoot in the sand, and clinging to outlandish tales told by the few travellers who came through. She didn’t understand why her father was so happy with the sand, but she was happy for him, and delighted in the brilliant blue and green creations he pulled from it, sparkling and shimmering in the searing light of the desert.

As Khazima grew, she took every opportunity to help her father at work, learning how to select the best sand, even if it meant trekking far from home. She learned to shape it, to colour it with unusual powders, and, when she was old enough, to blow glittering potion bottles and vases herself. With her own failed experiments, she made jewellery, embellishing her own clothing with rings and beads to remind herself that beautiful things can still come from failure and learning.

The event that sparked her passion for magic came when Desertsands was struck by a dry thunderstorm in her teenage years. As the residents scrambled to put out fires and keep their loved ones safe from the flying sands, Khazima watched the skies, wide-eyed. As she watched, a bolt of lightning struck the ground feet from her, scorching the sand into stinking, burned glass, and a creature stared back. It was composed entirely of crackling lightning, shaped like some manner of large bird, and despite its lack of face, Khazimah knew it was watching her.

The guards gave yells, and the creature was gone, vanishing in a spark of light that left its image on Khazima’s eyelids for hours. She was unharmed, but thrilled.

After that, she took to magic as quickly as she had taken to glass. Her tutor, one of the few aging wizards, tried to teach her all manner of magics, but what she wanted were summoning spells. She was determined to see that lightning bird again – no matter how many hours of study it took. This inevitably led to a few clashes with the town’s healer, a hot-headed woman a few years her senior, named Naehra, who tried to convince her of the destructive powers of magic, showing her own elemental mastery. But Khazima saw in Naehra’s god Nethys a different side – a creative, nurturing side – and tried to argue for the merits of using magic to shape and create.

With the addition of the sign to the post in town, Khazima’s mind has been made up. With a few tools and her journal in hand, she will travel to the Sandfort alongside Naehra, proving once and for all that magic is better used to create than to destroy.

Appearance:

Standing at 5’8”, Khazima cuts an unintimidating figure in slight stature and mousy face. Her dark brown eyes are usually framed by a look of intense concentration, her narrow eyebrows furrowed to a ‘v’ in the middle of her forehead. She wears small, silver-rimmed spectacles to correct her farsightedness, often taking them off and polishing them in the middle of conversation.

Her clothing is all simple, mostly white with the occasional black garment. She favours skirts, comfortable boots, and loose shirts that catch the breeze. A headscarf usually covers her hair, which otherwise hangs to just above her shoulders, tied sloppily back. Sewn throughout her clothes are several brilliant glass beads, which catch the sun and reflect shimmering patterns on the sand as she moves. More beads hang from her neck, wrists, and ears, in a kaleidoscope of brilliance.
