Male Human Ranger Lvl-5 HP: 36/43, AC.20, T.13,FF,17 F.+5,R.+7,W.+5, Init.+3

You know me so well Leon.

Male Human Ranger Lvl-5 HP: 36/43, AC.20, T.13,FF,17 F.+5,R.+7,W.+5, Init.+3

So... this game coming back anytime soon?

Male Human Ranger Lvl-5 HP: 36/43, AC.20, T.13,FF,17 F.+5,R.+7,W.+5, Init.+3

Never mind, it's fraud mail.

Male Human Ranger Lvl-5 HP: 36/43, AC.20, T.13,FF,17 F.+5,R.+7,W.+5, Init.+3

Sorry for the unconventional push in the story. I just thought we might have needed a jump start.

Also, weird question. Anyone else receive a private message from a Mr James Bill?

Once at the top, Jean helped Firavel get everyone else to the top of the rope, even going so far as to have the second to last person at the bottom tie Son in before getting everyone ready to heave him up the rope.

Once done, he turned their attention to the far tower with the lightning rod on top.

"Then that's going to be our next destination." Said Jean, nodding that direction.

First of all... are the players having fun? If they are, then you're doing something right.

Second of all... are the players having fun but are you increasingly NOT having fun? If so, then you DO need to adjust things—the game should be fun for everyone, not just the players.

One thing I often do when the players start doing better than I expected is simply to increase monster hit points so that they last a few extra rounds. It's not something the players notice, especially if you let the monsters still get killed off in what seems like an appropriate amount of time and resources spent.

Another thing you can do is simply add a few extra monsters into each fight, or simply have monsters from nearby encounter areas hear the battle and come join the fight.

Remember that the game is balanced/built with the assumption that the PCs are...

Thank you very much for these suggestions. they will come in handy. The players are in fact having a lot of fun. However, they are very overconfident.

And I guess I should have been more clear. They are easily thwarting pretty much every thing I throw at them. They are barely needing to use smite evil. I don't know if a few extra hit dice or same level monsters will be able to cut it as much as it should. The thing is, they are keeping track of experience and more monsters could make them over powered too soon. I will try the adding more hit dice path though. that might be able to help maybe not so with monsters but with enemies with class levels.

So I'm currently in the midst of running Wrath of the Righteous. My players are coming up on the end of Sword of Valor.

They've taken the keep and are just about to hit the basement area. Deliberately trying to be vague here. The problem I'm having is that they are a group of power-gamer's to begin with and the mythic abilities are amping it up a good deal. They often find exceedingly creative solutions to dealing with otherwise difficult problems, and I'm not sure if I should err on the side of how cool it is because they are mythic or stick with the rules. Some of these solutions include things the rules don't actually cover.

Because of their ability to deal with most encounters without much trouble I feel like I'm failing them when Wrath doesn't feel as epic as it should be.

I know Pathfinder isn't supposed to be a game of DM vs. the players but I'm finding it difficult to know where I should draw the line. How can I challenge my players?
Should smart enemies take extra precautions? Should I maximize hit points? Should I disregard the stat blocks on how the enemies fight entirely?

Any suggestions would be helpful.

Good luck with the storm. Hope the lights stay on.

Male Human Ranger Lvl-5 HP: 36/43, AC.20, T.13,FF,17 F.+5,R.+7,W.+5, Init.+3

"Good thinking, Firavel. You get to that, we'll cover you."

Jean couldn't quite see past Firavel and Leon but he shared his cousins dismay. "We'll deal with the problem when we get there. Stick to the outsides of the room, deeper water has a way of causing trouble." He moved along cautiously, watching to see if anything would emerge from the depths to attack them.

Jean grunts his agreement and tucks his leggings into his boots before he cinches up his boot straps.

"Great. Let's just get through this, everyone stick to the right wall. Leon take the lead." Jean said, pulling out his Longbow. "Firavel, you're next. Make sure we don't get caught by any surprises in the water. Alright, let's move."

Male Human Ranger Lvl-5 HP: 36/43, AC.20, T.13,FF,17 F.+5,R.+7,W.+5, Init.+3

Through the Iron doorway then.

Jean was still fascinated by the sheer collection of items the owner had at his disposal, but as he saw the mud tracks, his training kicked in and he was brought back to their current situation. He took a moment to carefully examine the marks.

"... Yes... there were, I'd guess, a dozen of them. Human. Here about a week ago. Heading down the ladder. I think we'll find what we're looking for if we follow them."

Male Human Ranger Lvl-5 HP: 36/43, AC.20, T.13,FF,17 F.+5,R.+7,W.+5, Init.+3

Hmm, not a bad idea, really. I've been wondering if I should multi class or not. Oracle seems a decent choice.

Though maybe that will have to wait until 7th level. 6th level Ranger is kind of awesome.

Jean was a little too overwhelmed with the strange collection to notice what was happening around him. "Hmm, what?"

Male Human Ranger Lvl-5 HP: 36/43, AC.20, T.13,FF,17 F.+5,R.+7,W.+5, Init.+3

Sounds great to me! I have been enjoying this game tremendously. Truth be told, I'm actually in this game in RL right now as well. Don't worry though, I'm not going to meta-game my way through and the party dynamic is very different online.

The original character I was playing with actually got killed not too far from now so I don't really know much beyond this point in the current story arc. Hopefully Jean will survive.

Male Human Ranger Lvl-5 HP: 36/43, AC.20, T.13,FF,17 F.+5,R.+7,W.+5, Init.+3

Head to the door on the left.

Male Human Ranger Lvl-5 HP: 36/43, AC.20, T.13,FF,17 F.+5,R.+7,W.+5, Init.+3

"Good job Firavel." Said Jean, turning to the others. "Right, well just because there is nothing obvious around doesn't mean there isn't something. Let's not do the alarms job for it. Everybody move quietly."

"Hmm, things seem too quiet here. In Harrowstone, the Whispering Way had caused all sorts of trouble. If I were them," he said glancing out towards the bridge. "I'd have started leaving traps of some sort behind. And this is where I'd have started. Firavel, you have the keenest eyes for those sorts of things. Take the lead."

Male Human Ranger Lvl-5 HP: 36/43, AC.20, T.13,FF,17 F.+5,R.+7,W.+5, Init.+3

Seems like most people are getting hit with some sort of nasty flu these days. Glad to have you back.

Male Human Ranger Lvl-5 HP: 36/43, AC.20, T.13,FF,17 F.+5,R.+7,W.+5, Init.+3

Happy Holidays and safe Winter everybody!

I see no reason to remove them for the moment.

"Library first?"

Male Human Ranger Lvl-5 HP: 36/43, AC.20, T.13,FF,17 F.+5,R.+7,W.+5, Init.+3

As always, real life takes precedent over games. Just got over a short run of illness myself, glad to hear your son is doing well.

Sounds good, we'll be waiting here for the game as you get to it. Happy Holidays!

Male Human Ranger Lvl-5 HP: 36/43, AC.20, T.13,FF,17 F.+5,R.+7,W.+5, Init.+3

Jean glanced around the room and grinned at the others. "I can't believe that worked."

Perception: 1d20 + 10 ⇒ (3) + 10 = 13

"So, follow the way east?"

Male Human Ranger Lvl-5 HP: 36/43, AC.20, T.13,FF,17 F.+5,R.+7,W.+5, Init.+3

"Okay then, let's try it." He said removing his cloak. "After all, if it doesn't work it can't be any worse than facing off against a bunch of Trolls."

Male Human Ranger Lvl-5 HP: 36/43, AC.20, T.13,FF,17 F.+5,R.+7,W.+5, Init.+3

"Well, there seems to be another one of these creatures like Son guarding the way. I don't know if it will be friendly to us or not." He looked down at the guard uniforms. "Maybe it's been trained to recognize the uniforms and will let us by without stopping us if we look like we belong here?"

Male Human Ranger Lvl-5 HP: 36/43, AC.20, T.13,FF,17 F.+5,R.+7,W.+5, Init.+3

Jean walked over to the area the Goblins indicated. He wanted to see the "dog" they mentioned looking like Son.

Male Human Ranger Lvl-5 HP: 36/43, AC.20, T.13,FF,17 F.+5,R.+7,W.+5, Init.+3

Picking up the tabards, Jean carries them back into the room and shows them to the group. "I found these laying about. Not sure if they'll be of any use to us. But if needed, we could probably disguise ourselves as servants of Count Caromarc." The memory of his faulty plan to gain entry to the chem works still fresh in his mind and he was searching for better alternatives.

He then turns to the Goblins. "What were the trolls doing here? Were they working for anyone or did they just take over this spot?"

Male Human Ranger Lvl-5 HP: 36/43, AC.20, T.13,FF,17 F.+5,R.+7,W.+5, Init.+3

Jean watched the continued conversation with some interest.
S. Motive: 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (1) + 9 = 10

But his mind was elsewhere at the moment. He glanced around the room and began to search the place for some sort of sign that could indicate what, if anything, the Trolls had been doing here.

Perception: 1d20 + 10 ⇒ (5) + 10 = 15

Male Human Ranger Lvl-5 HP: 36/43, AC.20, T.13,FF,17 F.+5,R.+7,W.+5, Init.+3

Jean looked amused as the Goblins began bouncing up and down. "Well cousin, I don't think you're going to be able to get rid of them now. Looks like they see you as their new employer and already you're doing a better job than the previous pair."

You're starting to build yourself a serving staff of NPC Goblins who'll be your followers when you inevitably take the Leadership feat. Anyone seen the Anime Big O? I feel like their should be another rule to your serving staff, they all have to wear black.

Male Human Ranger Lvl-5 HP: 36/43, AC.20, T.13,FF,17 F.+5,R.+7,W.+5, Init.+3

What they all said. I once held onto a dying game for over a year and a half, before finally giving up. I knew that one wasn't going to make it. I don't even think of this one as beginning to go down. So awesome job and keep up the good work.

Male Human Ranger Lvl-5 HP: 36/43, AC.20, T.13,FF,17 F.+5,R.+7,W.+5, Init.+3

Jean was about to speak out as Leon handed the Goblins curative resources. But something in the way his cousin moved and the creatures themselves looked held him back. Instead, he examined the Goblins with an odd mix of curiosity and something he would never have, in his youth, expected to feel for the creatures... pity.

Am I starting to grow soft? He looked at the Goblins cowering forms and decided that had to be it. Shaking his head, he let out a small chuckle.

When had he suddenly changed his mind? It wasn't long ago he would have mercilessly slain the Goblins along with the Trolls. He had certainly been a lot harder back then. He knew it hadn't changed overnight but somewhere he had learned a bit more wisdom. He wouldn't stop killing things, of that he was certain. Not for a while still but he found that he could let these ones go.

He let his cousin take charge for the moment.

Male Human Ranger Lvl-5 HP: 36/43, AC.20, T.13,FF,17 F.+5,R.+7,W.+5, Init.+3

I got tagged by a Troll claw for 7 damage.

Male Human Ranger Lvl-5 HP: 36/43, AC.20, T.13,FF,17 F.+5,R.+7,W.+5, Init.+3

Well now that the Troll hounds won't attack us... it's time to move on and speak with the Goblins.

Male Human Ranger Lvl-5 HP: 36/43, AC.20, T.13,FF,17 F.+5,R.+7,W.+5, Init.+3

Jean held his breath for a moment as the Troll Hounds tear into the meat he offered them. After a few tense moments he let out a breath. "Like I said, they don't attack Trolls. Not that the two could kill each-other anyway. The Goblins probably couldn't leave because of the hounds scent. Maybe I can get them calm enough for us to get by. I've got a way with animals but these things are different. Hope this works." Jean cautiously moved toward the Troll hounds, glancing at the Goblins.

Animal Empathy: 1d20 + 7 - 4 ⇒ (17) + 7 - 4 = 20
Perception: 1d20 + 10 ⇒ (13) + 10 = 23

"The Goblins do seem to have been prisoners." He said quietly as he began to pet the Hounds vigorously.

Male Human Ranger Lvl-5 HP: 36/43, AC.20, T.13,FF,17 F.+5,R.+7,W.+5, Init.+3

Jean looked back over his shoulder at his cousin. "They're Troll hounds. Generally they're territorial but won't attack Trolls, so they use them for pets. Guess we got lucky with the Trolls not thinking to call them to fight. Things could have gotten a whole lot worse. They aren't generally smart enough to recognize flame as any more of a threat than say a sword, so you can't use it to scare them. They still retain something close to a Trolls regenerative abilities so killing them is difficult and they're usually very hungry."

Male Human Ranger Lvl-5 HP: 36/43, AC.20, T.13,FF,17 F.+5,R.+7,W.+5, Init.+3

Adrenaline beginning to fade, Jean grimaced at the wound he had received on his right leg from the Troll. It wasn't too deep thanks to his leathers but it hurt like hell but fortunately it hadn't caught any major organs.

Or ripped off my leg.

He considered asking Mithias for some healing but decided he could wait for now. He settled down for a moment and rifled through his pack for some more dried meat.

"I think we're okay to get by the hounds for the moment. Hope someone can speak Goblin."

He walked forward and handed cautiously gave the meat to the hounds.
"Good guard dogs, here's a reward for not attacking us."

Wild Empathy: 1d20 + 7 - 4 ⇒ (6) + 7 - 4 = 9

Well that didn't work nearly so well this time. I hope that doesn't make them suddenly hate us.

Male Human Ranger Lvl-5 HP: 36/43, AC.20, T.13,FF,17 F.+5,R.+7,W.+5, Init.+3

Don't forget, you are hasted.

Male Human Ranger Lvl-5 HP: 36/43, AC.20, T.13,FF,17 F.+5,R.+7,W.+5, Init.+3

Jean steps back a step, content to let the Troll continue to burn as he reaches for more arrows.

Attack 1: 1d20 + 9 + 1 + 1 - 2 - 2 ⇒ (4) + 9 + 1 + 1 - 2 - 2 = 11
Damage: 1d8 + 4 + 1 + 2 ⇒ (2) + 4 + 1 + 2 = 9

Attack Rapid Shot: 1d20 + 9 + 1 + 1 - 2 - 2 ⇒ (16) + 9 + 1 + 1 - 2 - 2 = 23
Damage: 1d8 + 4 + 1 + 2 ⇒ (7) + 4 + 1 + 2 = 14

Male Human Ranger Lvl-5 HP: 36/43, AC.20, T.13,FF,17 F.+5,R.+7,W.+5, Init.+3

"Really?!" Jean said sarcastically as he attempted to roll away from the Trolls grasp.

1d20 + 5 ⇒ (13) + 5 = 18
He pulled a vial out of his bandolier and threw it at his attacker.

"I never knew."

Alchemists fire w/Deadly Aim: 1d20 + 8 + 1 - 2 ⇒ (7) + 8 + 1 - 2 = 14

damage: 1d6 + 1 + 4 ⇒ (5) + 1 + 4 = 10

I've always been unsure as to whether things like power attack, point blank shot and deadly aim worked to increase the damage of things like Alchemists fire, Acid flasks or Holy Water. What do you think DM? If not then my attack is 2 higher and damage is 4 lower.

Male Human Ranger Lvl-5 HP: 36/43, AC.20, T.13,FF,17 F.+5,R.+7,W.+5, Init.+3

That hits. Probably grappled.

Male Human Ranger Lvl-5 HP: 36/43, AC.20, T.13,FF,17 F.+5,R.+7,W.+5, Init.+3

Jean felt the trans-formative effects of his spell begin to alter his appearance; his features changed to become more angular, while his vision sharpened and he suddenly sprouted feathers arcing back along his face.

He pulled Vanquish close to his eyes and aimed for the weaker joints along the Trolls body before releasing arrows in magically accelerated succession.

Attack 1: 1d20 + 9 + 1 + 1 + 1 - 4 ⇒ (2) + 9 + 1 + 1 + 1 - 4 = 10

Male Human Ranger Lvl-5 HP: 36/43, AC.20, T.13,FF,17 F.+5,R.+7,W.+5, Init.+3

I've forgotten, did we acquire our gear we ordered or not?

Initiative: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (11) + 3 = 14

Jean was momentarily surprised as the crashing Giant came into view and charged. He had been ready for the hounds to attack rather than another creature and he reacted by rolling away from the giant and drawing his bow before casting a spell.

If the Troll goes first, Jean will attempt to acrobatics his way out of reach. Spell= Aspect of the Falcon.

Acrobatics: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (5) + 5 = 10

Male Human Ranger Lvl-5 HP: 36/43, AC.20, T.13,FF,17 F.+5,R.+7,W.+5, Init.+3

Well okay then, not impossible, just a lot harder to do.

Jean took a moment to go through his pack and empty it of some meat rations before walking forward, cautiously examining the Troll Hounds guarding the grounds. When he got close enough for them to surely smell him, he placed the rations on the ground raised both hands in a non-threatening, even welcoming gesture and speaks in an calm voice.

"Easy there you two, I'm a friend and don't want to harm you in any way. We're just looking to get by."

Male Human Ranger Lvl-5 HP: 36/43, AC.20, T.13,FF,17 F.+5,R.+7,W.+5, Init.+3

Jean looked around the structure in wonder. "Impressive, though why would anyone want to build this so far removed from any other civilization, and in the middle of a swamp. It could not have been easy to get the materials out here."

Perception: 1d20 + 10 ⇒ (12) + 10 = 22

"Hmm, there are some guard dogs over there. I'll go first and try to calm them down if they start to become hostile."

Male Human Ranger Lvl-5 HP: 36/43, AC.20, T.13,FF,17 F.+5,R.+7,W.+5, Init.+3

I feel like there might be something to ask but I can't think of it. Ready to move on.
