Background:

In Brevoy political intrigue is common and the Surtova family is thought to employ many spies to maintain their power. Illya Vastrakova is one of these spies.

Born Katrina Popova, into a middle class merchant family she was raised well and with a decent education. Her family was not rich nor poor, she lived an average life and a happy one until she was twelve.

Unknown to her and her mother her father's business in Port Ice was in dire trouble and debt collectors had begun to make their rounds to his business and then to their family home. Soon the family was destitute and all their worldly possessions gone.

Her father, a broken man, hung himself from the rafters of their now empty home.

Her mother and her two sisters were forced to move to there grandfather’s home. Life was hard and difficult and so was her grandfather. She soon found herself on the streets and alleys of Port Ice roaming in the places she had never been before.

Soon she found that she could fill her belly by begging and that if she fabricated a clever story she could gain even more money. It wasn't long until she started to pick pockets as well. She hated it but she needed the money.

She found freedom on the streets as well. She began dressing as a boy and running with groups of boys on the streets until she was sixteen.

At sixteen she was caught stealing a ladies coin purse in the market and dragged before a Surtova magistrate. She was sentenced to twenty years in prison as a boy and would have found herself sent to jail but her identity was discovered.

Upon the discovery of her secret she was sent to a home for orphaned girls which was a front for a Surtova spy training house.

There she was taught how to dress and act like nobles and commoners alike by a the spy mistress Harla Hadris. She was encouraged to learn the blade and the bow as well as to bluff and deceive, but above all she was taught to observe. She was taught to notice the little things and take mental notes repeating information back on demand from events she was forced to observe weeks before. She was trained in all the skills of treachery and subtlety.

At the age of twenty, after four years of training as a spy she was given a new name and given her first assignment, she would be the eyes and ears of House Surtova wherever they needed her and they needed her south in the river kingdoms in the Stolen Lands.

Appearance & Character:

Appearance

Physical:

Illya is a very pretty woman with long wavy brunette hair which she ties in a braid when on the road. She has large round green eyes and a shapely body. Her body posture is relaxed even when she is tense but her eyes tend to dart quickly.

She has a scar on her brow just above her right eye which she conceals with make-up when she needs to.

Clothing:

Explorer's outfit:

She wears tight leather black pants with wide stitching on the sides. On her feet she wears tall thigh high leather boots. She wears a simple wool shirt with short sleeves on her torso. on her hands she has fingerless leather gloves.
Around her neck she wears a black scarf with a red and yellow inlaid leaf pattern

Leather armour:

Her armour is tight and form fitting with large criss crossed strips of leather woven together. She has leather bracers that cover both forearms and elbows.

Illya's Character

Although very attractive Illya is somewhat of a tomboy due to her time on the streets pretending to be a boy.

She is capable of acting the part of the courtesan, the noble, the bar wench or even given enough time and a disguise kit a young man. But despite the ability to act she is somewhat inexperienced with life and the complexities of real human relationship and emotions, although the can emulate them well.

A reluctant spy, she was not raised for this but she is skilled at it. She enjoys the challenge and the intrigue but bemoans the damage that her espionage might inflict. Despite her misgivings about her task however she knows that back in Port ice her cruel spy mistress Harla Hadis waits for her reports and is more than capable of killing Illya’s mother and sisters for any betrayal on Illya’s part.

Illya is cunning and effective, willing to accomplish a task once given but unwilling to resort to open violence unless necessary. She has a keen eye and a great memory.

Campaign Progression & Motivation:

I see Illya as a scout/rogue character with the ability to eventually take part in political intrigue in the kingdom. Perhaps willingly filling the roll of Spymaster and reluctantly fulfilling the roll of assassin if needed.

She will enjoy the freedom she has in the new lands and desire to stay there and build something great but throughout the campaign she will be torn with her loyalty to her new friends and her family back in Port Ice threatened by the spy network (I’m not sure if this fits well with the campaign but I’m willing to work with this and change it as needed.)

Note: She will be politically motivated but also a willing member of the party, not looking to cause the party hurt or to backstab them because that’s just not fun for other players.

Associates and Enemies:

Friend: Marcus Cortain,

A fourty year old Merchant who is secretly a well trained Brevoy swordsman and spy. He is Illya’s primary contact in the spy network. He’s taken a likeing to her but in a fatherly way rather than a romatic way.

Good friend: Sara Kastor

A young woman who trained with Illya as a spy. They made quick friends. After the finished at the school Sara was sent on another mission. From the information Illya has gatherd it sounds as though Sara has assumed a new noble name and is to be wed to a southern noble to spy on that noble family.

Acquaintance: Mistress Harla Hadis

The school mistress at the all girls school house and orphanage that is a cover for a spy training organization for the Surtova Royal family. She is not friendly towards Illya but despite this she views Illya as one of her many daughters, a daughter who should obey her and respect her.

Enemy: Greta Salynn

Another pupil of Mistress Harla Hadis and Illya’s unwanted rival. She was constantly trying to compete with Illya and prove she was a better spy and student. Greta was an excellent spy but preferred assassination and chaos more so than Illya’s observe and manipulate style.

They clashed in both method and personality and they developed a mutual hatred for one another.

It came to a boiling point when Greta, for her final exam, was tasked with discrediting a local merchant, a merchant who had crossed a retainer of the Surtova family. She failed to accomplish the goal and was caught and tortured for information before she escaped.

Her mission had been compromised due to a leak of information within the organization and she believed that Illya was the leak due to their mutual hatred. She could not be dis-waded from her belief and tried to murder Illya.

Illya survived the attempted assassination and Greta was "reassigned" out of the house.

At this time Illya does not know where Greta has been sent but continues to remain cautious and watches for her rivals revenge.
