About Gunther Steinhammer

Born in the Five Kings Mountain Region, Gunther joined his father Biroc and brothers Thane and Gryf trading with the humans on Lake Encarthan. He helped guard the shipments of raw ore taken to market, and other than the occasional bout with pirates and brigands it was safe and steady work. While not hostile towards the dwarves, the Ustalav did not quite welcome them either, and when in Caliphas, they kept to themselves.

However, one day a middle-aged Varisian approached their table at an inn they frequented. He introduced himself as Milos Sczarni and ordered them a round of ale. Biroc invited him to join them. He had a business proposition for them, a friend in an assayer's office who had stumbled across the old map while going through some records. The mine was unclaimed and Milos had no experience with mining, but he offered the dwarves a partnership if they'd share the work, their reputation for fairness and industry well known. Gunther's father agreed to inspect the site and they traveled with the Varisian to the mine at the first opportunity to check it out.

It was indeed isolated, but their first inspection did indeed prove that the vein of silver was not played out yet. They set up a camp and began work on expanding the mine. The further they went, they uncovered signs that hinted at why the mine had lain untouched for so long. Skeletal remains, signs of a cave-ins and strange sounds in the darkness. While Gunther was hesitant to continue, Biroc and Gryf were convinced a larger vein of silver would lie behind the rubble of the last cave-in. Gunther and his brothers had just broken through the last of the deepest cave-in and were about to retire to camp when something came out of the tunnel and attacked them. It was emaciated and gibbered insanely as it mauled Gryf. Gunther attacked it with his pickaxe but it had no effect on the apparition. He was knocked against a wall and stunned, unable to do anything but watch as his father and Thane rushed to aid the dying Gryf. His father bellowed and knocked the beast from Gryf's corpse with a blow from his sledgehammer, but it only marked him as the monster's next target. More creatures charged from the darkness. As Gunther struggled to stand, Thane, an alchemist, readied a bomb and lobbed it at the nightmareish mob, however the unstable tunnels of the mine could not stand the explosion and his father and brothers were buried under tons of rock with the vile creatures they had unwittingly released.

Eventually, Gunther regained power in his limbs and stumbled towards the nearest town to get help. While his wounds were seen to, no one would travel with him to the lost mine as the area had a bad reputation with the locals. His grief was such that he did not travel home, he could not face his mother and sisters. He cut his beard and took up work as a caravan guard on the trade routes to and from Caliphas. Try as he might, he could not put the incident behind him and began to spend most of his wages on strong drink in an attempt to drown his memories. It was at this point that he met Professor Lorrimor. The Professor had heard of his ordeal and sought him out to learn more about the creatures he had faced. At first Gunther wanted nothing to do with the man. But the professor's persistance and kindness wore him down. Speaking about that night with the professor, and helping him gain knowledge that might save others from such a fate began to heal the mental scars he'd suffered. Instead of drinking in taverns he began to listen to the bards, the darker the tale the better, to gain more knowledge he might share with his new friend. He and the professor continued to exchange letters on occasion, but he had not heard from him for months before learning of his death. He made the journey to Ravengro to help honor the man who had given him a new lease on life.
