Background
--------------------

E. Evelyn Long PhD, was on the fast-track to success. He parlayed his impressive board scores, extensive (and frequently dangerous) field work, and a lauded dissertation into a prestigious position at the University of Heath-Uxbridge, one of the leading institutes of learning in Lassaiz. As an Adjunct Professor of Antiquities and Ancient Cultures, Long was on the path to full professorship, lifetime tenure, and all the perks. Long's academic work also served as excellent camouflage, covering his occult work under the guise of cultural and ethno-mythologic studies. In reality, he was a long-standing member of the secretive Theosophic League and an occult adept in his own right.

The war years made Long's field work in 'artifact retrieval' even more hazardous, given that his dig sites were often in disputed territory. Slipping deftly between the lines to continue his work, Long's actions drew the attention of the Aerite military. The war was dragging on and the Realm determined they weren't going to win using strictly conventional tactics. They were assembling a group of specialists - smugglers, thieves, spies, infiltrators, psychologists, and experts on Isslaan to facilitate a series of guerrilla actions and grey operations. Long's expertise in Isslaan's language and culture as well as his extensive set of local contacts made him a natural fit... and the Aerite military wasn't asking for volunteers.

Long was too much of cultural relativist to be a 'patriot' but he was born in Lassaiz and had a fondness for their enlightened ways, so he didn't resent the work that would hopefully save his homeland and bring the war to a quicker close.... And an honorable war record wouldn't hurt his chances for academic advancement.

In the closing days of the war, all of the special units were called to engage the enemy in direct action. Long's small unit found themselves under heavy fire and pinned down by an Isslaan infantry platoon. Dressed as locals, they would be treated as spies not soldiers... which amounted to a death sentence. Long had scrupulously avoided using his occult skills to date. Never let the 'normals' know we exist was a mantra of the League. Facing torture and death if captured, Long set aside the mantra and drew on his occult abilities. In moments, half the Isslaan platoon was unconscious on the floor and Long's team was escaping.

On reflection, Long didn't think any of his comrades-in-arms turned on him. In war, you don't snub anything that keeps you alive. But perhaps one of those good men sent a letter home that mentioned the circumstances of their 'near miss', or perhaps the after-action report raised questions, or... Long would never know how word of his abilities got out, but it did. At war's end, he returned to the university amid whispers, rumors, and the frequent threatening (and gutlessly anonymous) letter. His assured tenure-track career course wasn't so assured anymore. While Lassaiz prided itself on being enlightened, many of its illuminated academics were disturbingly provincial. Long would have blamed the waxing influence of the thrice-damned Triune God but it made no difference. Long's rising star was hurtling towards the horizon and he was persona non grata at all of his old haunts. Even his Theosophic colleagues couldn't risk open contact with him. He resigned his university appointment and left the city... for parts unknown.

A marked man couldn't afford to stay in one place... pinning a bullseye to himself. So Long stayed on the move and under the radar in the best possible way - aboard one of hundreds of small, anonymous, aerships plying the trade routes and engaged in semi-legal activities. Criminals don't care about your past or ask too many questions. It wasn't a bad life really and in many ways it was quite similar to his years of field work. Keep your business to yourself, keep your head down, and keep moving.
